You might expect the debut album from a woman who has collaborated extensively with Tricky and Orbital to be both wondrous and strange--and you'd be right to. What you might not expect is the depth of Alison Goldfrapp's beguiling, distracting 21st-century noir visions on Felt Mountain. She and her fellow composer Will Gregory can mix in Brechtian cabaret; classical instrumentation; left-of-field electronics; decadent, Gainsbourg-style French pop; and the odd piece of whistling on just one track ("Felt Mountain"). "Oompa Radar" almost reaches Tom Waits heights of infamy from the way familiar instruments come together in such a simultaneously comforting and alienating style. The baroque "Paper Bag," meanwhile, uncannily recalls Joe Meek's toy-town visions of 1960s grandeur. All this and a seductive vocal to die for. --Everett True

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-03-18

Sometimes you find a group of songs that create "that" kind of moments. For example, each time I listen to "pilots" (and mostly, all of the songs in this album) something beautiful is happening. It doesn't matter if I am at work or if I am just staring at the skies.
I had this one since its release date. But haven't pay enough attention until a couple of years after. I guess you have to find the right moment to enjoy it.
Sometimes I wish "Black Cherry" and "Supernature" where as fine as this one.

I was not really impressed, a little to echoey for my taste. Some songs ok, but weird in a weird way.

5 out of 5 stars goldfrapp rocks!.......2006-12-23

this is a strange and strangely familiar CD. the music is different - it takes you to a different place. i can't seem to stop playing it, it keeps growing on me. experience a strange haunting yet wonderful twist with this CD. it's almost like a sound track to a noir flick - really worth checking out!

1 out of 5 stars Can not sing.......2006-11-24

This CD reflects a very soft voice that's off tune. The drawn out and slow lyrics might be great but the CD as a whole with excepton to one track with little or no singing is kind of lousy. I am pretty liberal when it comes to taste in music.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric... oniric.. contemporary ambient .......2006-10-25

I am in my early forties, and this album I hear in a cd store some years ago while browsing.. i just could not help appreciating the surreal sound of this music, I just had to get it..

get some good wines, get together with your friends, this is perfect ambient music .. in the road while its raining and you really need your to be in a different world.. this is the music

I loved this album as soon as my ears heard its first note. The only way I can describe it is relaxing and unique. The music is light and mystical (as cheesy as that sounds) and her voice is beautiful. They picked the perfect images on their album because their music really conveys a feeling of being far away from Texas (where I live) and somewhere calm and quiet in a forest. To really not think I am just a big happy flowerchild, you need to listen to the album and I am pretty sure you will get what I am saying. It is one of those albums you won't regret buying; I even bought it on vinyl and cd. And who can resist a remake of "Let's Get Physical."

5 out of 5 stars lasting.......2003-05-24

my friend and musical geru played this for me one time while we were playing chess and I was so fascinated by it that he won. Alison Goldfrapp has one of the best voices we could never have. I won't be one of those that claim to have found "the best" album ever. i'll just say that it's one of my favorites. I've heard alot of people say that it's sort of like sixties trip hop, and I think they're right, but i wouldn't know on a scientific level or anything.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the bonus CD alone...........2003-03-30

Until early 2002, my musical tastes had been quite limited - broadway tunes and (some) top forty!! So it was with trepidation that I bought 'Felt Mountain' by Goldfrapp on the recommendation of a friend. But I'm glad I did...

Felt Mountain was my first foray into 'non mainstream' music. From the very first seconds of the first track 'lovely head', with it's solo brass and sombre whistle intro, I knew I was in for a wonderful aural treat...

I don't want to catorgorise Felt Mountain into a particular musical style, but I suppose it could be best described as 'chill out' music, but that description hardly gives it justice. What we have is a wonderful aural soundscape that incorporates traditional classical instruments along side modern synthesisers to create wonderful mellow music, that is not only relaxing, but also creates the most wonderful visual imagery inside.

The special edition CD included contains remixes of various songs in which a concerted effort has been made to create markedly different versions of the songs, including having a male vocalist on the Human calexico mix singing in a non-english language. Also here is an excellent version of 'Physical' (originally by Olivia Newtown John) and a 7+minute mpeg movie called a 'Trip To Felt Mountain'. It is in this movie where we get to spend some time with the duo that is Goldfrapp and discover how they created this wonderful CD and to view some spectacular nature imagery.

A special mention should be made of the cover design and photography - all designed by singer Alison Golfrapp herself. We get wonderful, thought proking and peace - inducing imagery of nature and mountains that sits so well with the music. So we actually get music and imagery that complement each other beautifully.

How does one truely define Goldfrapp and their debut CD Felt Mountain?? I would use words like creative, original, innovative, fresh - the list could go on and on. But if you are someone who can appreciate music other than top 40, give Felt mountain a listen and enter a world of inner reflection where music and imagery combine together perfectly ...

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, crystalline vocal talent.......2002-09-02

Alison Goldfrapp is a new buy for me. I wanted to deviate from electronica and trekk towards more opera, classical, or loungy beats. It's weird how I read that this CD is compared to Bjork's 'Vespertine', that I bought that CD a year ago. Bjork is by far my favorite artist, but I like this CD much more than 'Vespertine'. Whether you like the soft, jazzy, bass lines of 'Lovely Head', or the ethereal yet upbeat sounds of 'Utopia', this CD is a must for those who love electronica, jazz, or lounge music.

5 out of 5 stars She Is the Goddess of This Decade.......2002-02-14

One year has gone by since the release of this album, i mean the original version of it. It has been in my playlist now for almost a year, and for every month, this is under heavy rotation, together with Bjork's 'Vespertine' and Anja Garbarek's 'Smiling and Waving'. This special edition of 'Felt Mountain' contains bonus remixes of the album tracks, accompanied by 'Utopia' single, now consider yourself the luckiest person on Earth. Here is a description of the album:
The first note of the album is an out-of-place high note, followed by some whistle, leads you into a beautiful village surrounded by mountains. Alison's vocal is mesmerizing, lauguid and frail. 'Paper Bag' is the most acoustic track here, at first listen, one gets the idea that this is a baroquish unplugged album. A little bit of scrutinization will tell you that her voice is wearing this fur coat made of soft ambient electronica, together with the instrumentation here, the string, the harpischord...her voice is seductive like that of a siren, draws you nearer and nearer to her. 'Human' is essentially a Shirley Bassey number with a modern twist to it, i didn't like it and thought it was out of place, but it really grows on you. After that, we have the retroish 'Pilot', the Portishead-like displeasure on 'Deer Stop', the ethereal 'Felt Mountain' and the drunken country 'Oompa Radar'. The single 'Utopia' starts off with Alison's trained soprano voice in the background, then it fades out to make way for Alison's half-spoken, half-sung vocal. Together with the gorgeous sound of harpischord and more...more electronic coating here, the complexity of it can only be matched by Bjork's Vespertine. The low-key 'Horse Tears' is best served with a glass of red wine at 2 am. This fantastic closer provides a very natural and perfect way of ending this album. Almost flawless album, up there with Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love' and Bjork's 'Vespertine', a cut above Portishead's 'Dummy' and Perry Blake's 'Still Life'.

5 out of 5 stars IMPRESSIVE!.......2002-03-07

Very seldom is the adage "there is nothing new under the sun" considered very positive. Also, very seldom, does an album by a new artist come along which is all at once coherent, mesmerizing, and beautiful. Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain is that and more.

Listening to this album brings to mind several other artists and genres; Annie Ross, Portishead, Momo, Jai, Burt Bachrach, Gregorian Chant, - even the Exotica soundtrack. I don't know much about Gregory and Goldfrapp, but their influences are blatantly discernable. This is normally a bad thing but, again, contrarily, and ironically, Goldfrapp possesses such refined taste and talent that they manage to create something new and satisfying. Ambiently, (a Bushism - contemporarily and contextually, this "should" be a real word; afterall, "Bushism" is now a word!), they really have their act together; conservatively interspersing odd background noises here and there much like David Sylvian and Thomas Dolby.

The instrumentation is somewhat eclectic and exotic: the melodica (T. Theilemans, A. Pablo) & koto (Japanese). However, use of more traditional jazz instrumentation, most notably, brass is prevalent. It also has very pleasant and "REAL" strings!!! As a mater of fact - it sounds as if all the strings and brass are "real", (a fact realized by the personnel cited in the liner notes). Rare, since most instrumentation on this scale is faked in today's digital world - so don't be alarmed by the seemingly pervasive presence of keyboards credits! Definitely, not just another keyboard album.

And the arrangements! Beautiful. Sublime. Soothing. Very tasteful. Very traditional in a jazz, torch song sense.

There is something peculiar though. Even though Alison's vocals are sultry, smooth, and organic, the overall tone of the album gives the impression of "cold". Not bitter cold per se; just sort of an "expansive and exhilarating mountain cold". Now normally, one could attribute this to the cover art, ( snowcapped mountains, cool damp woods, etc), however, I got this impression before I issued due attention to it. I simply popped in the CD and was smitten. Or it could be the fact that the first time I listened to it, it was snowing heavily and very "cold". I don't know. Anyway, the impression is indelible.

The recording quality is also good.

Overall however, the impression is that they spent great amounts of time and care in the making this recording. It definitely shows. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars be a part of it.......2002-02-20

felt mountain is a downtempo paradise. forget about all the comparisons to portishead, bjork, and shirley bassey and just enjoy the wondrous landscape that alison and will have created.

stand out tracks for myself include: the adventurous and sexy, "human". "felt mountain" which inluded no actual lyrics but is still incredibly catchy. and horse tears which is an amazing closer and really showcases alison's beautiful voice.

as for the new released "revamped felt mountain". it is ok. just ok. u.k girls (physical) is fun. the tom middleton mix of utopia is not very original but never less enjoyable. calexico's version of human is interesting but all together boring. the rest are typical but for the goldfrapp fan this is a must have.

this album blows me away. from its beautiful string backgrounds to its ultra-weird effects, everything is put together to make just my type of music.
alison goldfrapp is the only female singer i have ever really liked.
i HIGHLY recommend this album. :)

5 out of 5 stars This is one of THOSE albums.......2001-10-25

There are certain albums, which everybody should own. Music at it best communicates on many levels, which is exactly what 'Felt Mountain' does. Alison Goldfrapp, the talent behind this work of beauty, demonstrates a true understanding of music and how to express herself through it. But it is not just her vocal talent that makes this album, it is a rare whole of elements that have come together to make music which should not be ignored, simply because it is impossible to pigeon hole it.

If you don't by this album, then put your stereo in storage, buy a one way ticket to iceland and come back when you have a little more musical sense, because this is so beautiful that it hurts.

5 out of 5 stars Felt it.......2005-10-22

Faux-sexy pop tarts, eat your li'l hearts out. Alison Goldfrapp has a leg up on the world of sexy, sensuous pop music.

And with her third album "Supernature" awaiting release in the U.S., it's time to revisit her first two albums, "Felt Mountain" and "Black Cherry." While stylistically these two can be quite different, they share certain sounds: icy trippiness and soft sensuality.

"Felt Mountain" is a unique kind of electronica: velvety, weird, and incredibly sensuous. The wintry cover art brings to mind trees, snow and the aurora; the music inside more or less continues that theme, with chilly electronica blanketing piano melodies and funk-edged pop music.

"Are you human/or a dud?/Are you human/or do you make it up?" Goldfrapp croons in one of the sexier songs. Her vocals are in their best form here, able to murmur sexy lyrics ("I shiver when you shake/And fold into jelly...") then let rip with a throaty croon or a weird yowl.

Her follow-up, "Black Cherry," is a bit less of a thrill, merely because it's less unique. It seems like more typical trip-hop. But thankfully, the more you listen to it, the clearer it becomes that this chilly, sparkling piece of pop work. Think of "Felt Mountain," but make it icier and full of sweeping electronic sound effects, rather than soft downtempo.

With that in mind, "Black Cherry" is a genuinely lovely piece of work: It has swaying trip-hop songs, swooning balladry, blippy pop, and the twisty techno of "Strict Machine." Where Goldfrapp sounded sexy before, here she sounds like she's having a lot of fun. The only real flaw is "Twist," which sounds like Kylie trying out a more electronic sound.

While the two albums are very different, there are songs that link them together with similar styles -- the delicate "Forever" could easily have been from "Felt Mountain," while the dramatic "Human" could have been a cut from "Black Cherry." It's just that one veers more towards sultry downtempo, while the other is more openly sexy, cold and dancey.

While at first they sound incredibly different, "Black Cherry" and "Felt Mountain" share enough things to make them interlinked masterpieces. Sultry, sweet and uniformly pretty.

5 out of 5 stars melodic soup; Bassey/Portishead/Lamb.......2001-07-23

Alison Goldfrapp's vocal are like a warm blanket that springs from her heart and covers you, sometimes channeling SHIRLEY BASSEY with LAMB playing bass. Where PORTISHEAD is like being alone and cold in the rain and ideal for dealing with depression (no disrespect, i love them) GOLDFRAPP is a spring day. This CD doesn't bring the listener down @ all! The whole CD is brilliant in the sense, you can press play and after you finish the trip, you dont want to get off, as you yearn for more. This tapps in your body's endorphins and warms you.. This edition contains the 'Human 'single, which contains two remixes. Both of which are mixed beautifully. From start to finsh - BRILLIANT!!!! If you like bands like; PORTISHEAD, LAMB, HOOVERPHONIC, MOORCHEEBA and touch of BASSEY, @ least listen to the CD, you'll fall in love. Start with UTOPIA. I also recommend any remixes of UTOPIA, a perfect (5 stars song)!!!!!! Enjoy - your ears will thank you!!!!!!

Lastly: "is it worth the extra dosh?" Yes. Its cheaper than buying the single, and if you love the song, the artist, the CD, why not add to the playlist. I hope this has helped.
