Warner Bros. did with the CD release of the 1970 vinyl LP 10 Years Together: Best of Peter, Paul & Mary what every label should do with CD reissues of vinyl compilations. They took into account the longer length of CDs and added tracks. The original release of 10 smash hits has been fleshed out here with three additional tracks, including a melodic take on Dylan's Basement Tapes rarity "Too Much of Nothing." Otherwise, it's hits and nothing but hits, ranging from definitive folk interpretations ("If I Had a Hammer") to pop ("I Dig Rock 'n' Roll Music") to Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot covers that compete with the originals and first brought such material to the mainstream. Only "Cruel War" is missing. --Bill Holdship

I'm sure that all of us who remember PP&M welcome a CD reissue if only because we won't have to listen to the scratches and the skips that a well-loved record album is burdened by. But I'm surprised at the Amazon review posted ahead of all the "amateurs" because there are NO NEW TRACKS on the CD. The record has 13 tracks, not 10, as the review so prominently claims. I agree with the other amateur reviewers who would like to hear some of the other PP&M songs added, such as "This Land is Your Land" and "Where Have all the Flowers Gone." And it's understandable that all the recording company wanted to do was reissue the original. But please, Amazon, don't advertise a product as something it's not.

A Classic of American Folk Music.......2006-10-08

I still have this on vinyl, but just never bother with the stereo anymore. I pounced on the CD and popped it into my player, so once again I can relive the sound that meant so much to me in my college days. It's still a mellow blending of voices and a great selection of songs.
You get your classic folk tunes (Blowin' in the Wind and If I Had a Hammer), plus 60s songs like Too Much of Nothing and I Dig Rock and Roll Music. I love their version of Lemon Tree and you just have to have Puff the Magic Dragon.
A marvelous album!

38 minutes of Greatest Hits.......2006-01-18

First released on LP in 1970, this greatest hits album contains several of the big hits by Peter, Paul, and Mary, the folk trio from the '60's whose classic works include "Puff the Magic Dragon" and their covers of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer," John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." The group's sound consisted of simple, feel-good, peace-loving, almost naive, harmonies with spare instrumentation (usually just guitars and acoustic bass) and without much of a hint of an edge (realizing that some of their music was "protest music" in spirit and assuming for the moment that "Puff!" wasn't about lighting up a doobie). This formula garnered them a loyal following in the '60's and no doubt has today's greying listeners harkening back to those good old days. Anyone who was a fan and hasn't heard them for years will find this a warm reminder of the classic tunes and times.

It's always a bit difficult to review a Greatest Hits album -- people always quibbling about what songs in their opinion were unjustly left out and which they could have done without. I always think that's pointless, but I can't resist jumping on the bandwagon this time... True, this CD release improves on the earlier LP version by adding 3 tracks, but the total playing time still only comes to less than 38 minutes. That just doesn't cut it for me in the age of the CD format. So, what would I add? Well, how about "This Land is Your Land," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," or "Kumbaya," "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "Down By The Riverside," or even "Because All Men Are Brothers." Ah, fair enough... if I'd wanted those tracks, I should have purchased either the 2CD collection, "Around the Campfire" or the newly released and remastered "The Very Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary." Don't get me wrong, "Ten Years Together" is a decent album with some classic hits from PPM, but if you want something more complete and a better value for your $, check out either of those two albums first -- I wish I had (and I wish I'd read a review that made this clear). Then again, with "The Very Best..." available now, you should be able to pick up "Ten Years Together" for a dollar or two.

Crisp American folk music.......2005-10-16

A music collection that contains classical numbers from the classics of American folk music.

A collection that also makes me cruise to the 60's, both with its melodies and lyrics. The themes are socially and politically oriented making them even more universal.

Great CD.......2007-01-10

This is a great CD that contains all of their hits. Hard to review because it's all pre-released music.

Guess I like their newer stuff better.......2006-08-10

The newer music on the CD I liked much better than the older stuff. I should have just bought the CD that most of the newer songs were on. I actually had that tape and loved it but now have CD player in the car and thought if I liked that album I should like their other music too. But overall its not a waste like some best hits CDs out there.

One of the best collections EVER, and that's CLEAR........2005-04-05

Unlike some other people, I find this "Best Of" to be perfect. Mostly because I always liked them when I heard them, but not enough to buy an album, so "Ten Years Gone" was made for me. This is also packed full of 21 songs, the more popular ones being "Wonderful", "Santa Monica", "AM Radio", and "I Will Buy You A New Life". Plus the excellent "Father Of Mine", which unfortunately many relate to, and 2 good covers of "The Boys Are Back In Town" and "Brown Eyed Girl". Most of what I didn't know I like now also. This collection should easily please most, but it probably won't be "Everything To Everyone".

An Everclear Fan Who refuses to buy this Album.......2005-02-25

A Friend of mine bought this album and I listened to it. This compilation is a serious shortchange to Everclear's fans, and saddest of all, to themselves. Alexakis and Co. have seriously mislead themselves in almost all ways since Thier 2000 release of 'Songs from an American Movie: Part 1' For starters, what in the hell kind of title is that? It's lame, that's what. I only found two, maybe three songs on that album that I could keep listening to. I only bought 'Vol 2' to say that, yes, I owned all of their albums. I don't think there is one good song on Vol 2, especially when you line it up with anything they produced up until 1998. All songs on that album either consist of pathetic, blind rage, or pathetic, dithering, trivial matters. It is a long shot from their introspective, clever disapointment and sorrow that still somehow carries a touch of sunshine and hope, everclears trademarks.
I would have really liked to have seen some of their fantastic, less well known songs on this album like 'Sunflowers,' 'Amphetamine,' or 'White Men in Black Suits' off of 'So Much for the Afterglow', by far Everlears best album. Their inclusion of less well known songs from 'Sparkle and Fade' is good, but they really shortchange themselves on what they wrote during their early days on 'World of Noise'
Eveclear, I hope, is starting to show some hope. I believe that they have seen their last two albums for the failures that they are. Their sound has become extremely weak and uninspired, their lyrics a far cry from the smack-you-in the face stuff that they used to write. The only glimmer of hope I saw on their latest release, 'Slow-Motion Daydream' was 'Crysanthemum,' which heralds a very pure and stripped-away quality of acuoustic guitar, blended ever so slightly with effective sound effects of blowing wind and haunting lyrics. 'New York Times' is half way good, but is nothing that stands up above anything else that any unpublished poet or musician wrote to express their feelings in a post 9/11 world.
10 Years are definetly gone, and the last 4 of them are WAY gone. i hope you get your rear in gear Art. You've done it before, now do it again. I know '20 Years Gone' can be a much better shot.

Everclear's Best Of is a great CD for anyone to own........2005-01-12

Everclear's Best Of is a great CD for anyone to own.

This is a great Everclear best of CD. I am glad there are 21 songs and that it is almost 80 minutes long. There are 2 b-sides on here called Local God (from the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack) and The Boys Are Back In Town (a Thin Lizzy cover that was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack). There are also 2 new songs on here that were originally recorded during Everclear's recording sessions for their previous CD Slow Motion Daydream. The new songs are called Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) and The New Disease.

The songs and what I think of them is the following:

#01. Wonderful - This is a great pop sounding song from them. It is a big hit too. This is a great song to listen to when you are in a good mood. Even though the lyrics sound happy, they are not.

#02. Santa Monica - This is a great rock song from them with a great beat and great words. This is this first big hit and the song that made them famous.

#03. Everything To Everyone - This is another good rock song that was a big hit. This was followed by other hit songs that broke them into the mainstream music concious.

#04. AM Radio - This is another big hit with a 70's feel to it. It surprised me by how popular it became. This is not a favorite of mine off of here, but I like it. It is a necessity for this CD.

#05. Volvo Driving Soccer Mom - I like this song a lot. It was a hit but not a big one. This song did not help their CD Slow Motion Daydream sell well because not many people liked this song I guess or that album.

#06. I Will Buy You A New Life - This song was a huge hit. I think it was either this song, Santa Monica, Father Of Mine, or Wonderful that was their biggest hit. This is the song that broke them into the mainstream music concious and made them a household name. If you didn't know Everclear from their song Santa Monica off their CD Sparkle And Fade, you now did because of this song off their CD So Much For The Afterglow.

#07. Learning How To Smile - I don't remember this song being a hit. But it is another kind of pop song from them. It is not as good as Wonderful in my opinion. Both these songs can be found off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. One: Learning How To Smile, which is their most pop sounding CD.

#08. Strawberry - This song was a small hit. It is a slower song, but I like it and the acoustic guitar that you can hear throughout the whold thing. I like the words to this song and how well they go with the music.

#09. Local God - This song was a hit in Austraila. I am not sure if it was here in the U.S.A. But it sure sounds like it was, because it is a great sounding rock song and sounds like a big hit. This is the first b-side off this CD. It was originally on the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack. If it wasn't a big hit, then that is because it is a off a soundtrack and wasn't promoted right. This is a favorite Everclear song of mine.

#10. Summerland - This is another hit, not a big one or small one though. In the booklet for this CD Art Alexakis says about this song: Hands down... my favorite Everclear song of all time. This is a slow rock song. Not a favorite of mine, but I like it some.

#11. Fire Maple Song - This was not a hit. But if it was, it would have been their first one. This is the only song on this compilation CD off their first CD World Of Noise. This song is alright. It is growing on me. It is another slower rock song. I wish they included another song or two from their first CD on this compilation than some others included on here.

#12. When It All Goes Wrong Again - This is their first hit off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. Two: Good Time For A Bad Attitude, which is the more rocking of the two Songs From American Movie CDs. This is another rock song. I prefer their song Rock Star over this one. Both songs are on Good Time For A Bad Attitude.

#13. Father Of Mine (Radio Mix) - Father Of Mine was another huge hit from Everclear. This is the radio mix version, so if you have So Much For The Afterglow, this version may sound a little different to you. But it still sounds good. This is Art Alexakis's favorite version of this song. This is Everclear song has touched and helped more people than any other.

#14. The Boys Are Back In Town - This song was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. It is a cover of an old Thin Lizzy song. This is a good rock song. This song is the second b-side off of this CD. I like this song better than their cover of Brown Eyed Girl.

#15. Heroin Girl - This is a rock great song. This was a big hit and another one of my favorite Everclear songs. This is the fastest song off of this CD. It has great music and the lyrics are really cool. I love listening to this song. It is cool.

#16. Brown Eyed Girl - This is another hit song. This is a slow rock song. But that should be obvious since it is a cover of the Van Morrison classic. This is a good cover, but I prefer The Boys Are Back In Town over this one. But this is still good.

#17. Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) - This is the first previously unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. It is not that hard but not that soft either. I like the words and the music to it.

#18. The New Disease - This is the second previosly unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. I am not sure if this song or Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) were hits or not. I am not sure which one I like better. They are both good songs. I am glad that they are on here.

#19. The New York Times - This song is about hoping there is love and compassion in this post 9/11 world. 9/11 plus something tragic that happened to a poor soul in Everclear's hometown of Portland Oregon inspired Art Alexakis to write this. He wrote this hoping the world would stop hating and fearing, and start loving and being compassionate. This is a slow moving rock song. A definiate inclusion on this CD. I like this good hit song too.

#20. Song From An American Movie Pt. 1 - If any song doesn't deserve to be on this CD, it is this one. This is just a soft nice intro to a previous CD of theirs. They should have taken this song off and replaced it with the song One Hit Wonder off the CD So Much For The Afterglow. That would have been better.

#21. Rock Star - This is of course a rock song. I like this song a lot. It has great music and some cool lyrics that got misinterpreted by a lot of fans of the band. This is another hit song. This is a great way to end the CD. This is another favorite Everclear song of mine. It is a song I am sure you will like too. It is a loud fast and just excellent song of theirs.

So there you have it. 21 great songs from a great band. I am glad I got this CD. I recommend it to anyone, even if you don't like the band or already have all of their other CDs. Pick it up.

It is too bad though that Everclear is just done to one member now, Art Alexakis. But he promises another Everclear album later this year. I hope he makes a great one with some great musicians. Everclear is a good band and I hope they live on and on.

Just go out and pick up this CD and enjoy it as much as I do.

Vanessa Williams has long been one of my favorite singers and entertainers out there and this compilation is a great example why. Featuring the now-classic pop ballad "Save The Best For Last" and the Oscar-winning "Colors Of The Wind" (which is my personal favorite on the album), among other hits, the album is an absolute winner. As for Vanessa herself, you just can't help but be captivated by her sheer beauty and talent (currently co-starring on "Betty"), I simply adore this woman. After all the turmoil she had to go through in the beginning of her career, she just started from scratch all over again and she did it in such an honorable way. She's a true role model - for everyone.

I really like Vanessa Williams and over the years she has had a couple of big songs here and there. Some of the ones on this cd were never huge hits, but to her fans, we know them well. My personal favourites here are Betcha Never (a bit latin-ish and fun), Sweetest Days and Save The Best For Last. That song is now a bit of an anthem. She doesn't have the most powerful voice in the world, but it's pretty and her music is really beautiful. Maybe for fans only. I just wished she'd really come back with some new big hits.

This CD has three great songs: Love Is, Save the Best for last, and Dreamin'. The rest of the songs are just OK. This is why it just doesn't pay to buy CD's. I can't recommend purchasing the whole CD just for three songs.

True to the title this is Alvin's & (&TYA's) bluest...excellent,throughout. Tracks chosen from past works as well as newer compositions, I think were/are Great choices. My only beef is that more and more people are not aware of the magnificent musicianship of Ten Years After and,of course, Alvin Lee's genius. ...keep playin' on guys there are some of us who live for and appreciate your efforts...a true masterwork or as the French would say a chef-d'oeuvre... WOAH!!!

I can see, (hear), now that Lee does indeed use blues, rock, jazz, and rockabilly in his style, after reading mentions of this, but none of this ever occurred to me when I first began listening to him, c.1967. Lee has put all of these influences into seamless personal style that is most accurately communicated by simply calling it "Alvin Lee".

Still Growing On Me.......2007-01-04

I was never a huge Ten Years After fan but I did listen to them somewhat regularly "back in the day," as my kids like to say. I had this album and Cricklewood Green in vinyl plus a few cuts on the Woodstock Album.
Now my son is learning to play the guitar so I thought I'd introduce him to some "good guitar" in the form of Alvin Lee. He's not impressed with most of what I listen to but he does like this a bit.
I must say that I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I do. The more I listen to it the more it grows on me. Almost every song on this album has staying power. If you like TYA at all this is a great album overall and worth the investment.

A Classic.......2006-11-27

What I like about this album is that it covers a wide range of emotions and feelings. Lead guitarist Alvin Lee was widely proclaimed as the fastest guitarist of his era. This album was pretty much mandatory in any early 70's high school rockers collection. I highly recommend this album for anyone wanting a taste of classic early 70's rock and roll. Really good stuff from a really good band.

Once There Was A Time...a space in time.......2006-11-10

A friend and I were recently reminiscing of a space in time before there were music downloads, mp3's, i tunes,and i pods. A time when vinyl was the musical medium . Albums contained liner notes and lyric sheets that were printed large enough to read. Cover Art was captivating and meant to be enjoyed. Songs were heard as being just a smaller segment of a larger collection of work. You dropped the needle,sat down and took it in from start to finish. Like a great movie, you wouldn't dare leave before the end. Every song set up the next one. The music was the event of that moment in time, not a wallpaper back drop. 'A Space In Time' is of that time, yet after 35 years it has stood the test. Timeless.

Disappointing re-released songs.......2007-05-14

Want this CD? Willing to put up with re-released versions of all the Kanto and Johto songs such as the first two theme songs and miscellaneous tracks like Double Trouble? (I ask: WHY?!)

If you're a longtime fan, with CDs of 2.B.A Master and Totally Pokemon already in the collection, don't bother. Half of this CD's tracks are a waste of time; we've heard them all before! In fact, not even half of the music here is new material. Most of the new stuff is theme songs, which are also disappointing if you're looking for full 3 minute tracks. Some, like the Battle Frontier theme, only go for about 48 seconds. Tsk tsk; didn't Loeffler and Co bother to come up with more verses in the later seasons?

However, if you're a real enthusiast and you've signed all the petitions to get more CD's released; I suppose this is better than nothing, and it's funny listening to the guy in the Hoenn PokeRap mispronounce all the names. And the CD cover is prettyful. (lots of new poses for all your favourite monsters)

Unlike the first two CD's, there are NO lyrics provided, just updated info on who actually composed the theme songs (urging you to fix up your iTunes playlists). Still, I gave it three stars all the same; the tracks at the end make up for all the old stuff at the beginning. (And yes, I do realise that it's important to come back to the franchise's roots with the first couple of season's music such as the main theme song and the Rap at the end; but there's just a little too many from the first two CD's put on this one to make it actually logical...)

Love It!.......2007-05-13

I bought this for my son (age 7) and it is his favorite cd to listen to...he is a Pokemon fanatic. It has all of the theme songs (except the new, Diamond and Pearl)and that is what he loves about it. We have other Pokemon cd's as well, but this one is one of the best!

Medley of the years.......2007-05-12

Pokémon X: Ten Years of Pokémon is, essentially, the "best of" in music since Pokémon was introduced. Some of the songs have already been released on CD, and only a few are never-before-heard, but the CD is still worth the wait.

The bulk of the CD contains the theme songs for each season of Pokémon so far, with my only concern being the length of these songs. Most of the themes are as short as they were in their respective season, and I know that extended versions are out there for most of the theme songs...but they are still great songs, short and all.

For anyone interested in Pokémon, this is a great buy. It's more of an expansion pack of songs then a complete CD, but it does have that fun appeal, which should be the goal for any CD.

Good soundtrack but not 100% satisfying........2007-04-18

The songs are good and fun to listen to. They are the best of the best from all the songs that have come out over the past ten years. The only problem is that some of the songs are really short.

With its devotion to '50s rock and blues coupled to a manic, if decidedly middlebrow performance tack, Ten Years After could seem positively Jurassic, even by late-'60s standards. This collection culls magnificently recorded performances (kudos to Hendrix/ELP engineer Eddie Kramer) from a February 1970 weekend stand at the Fillmore East, capturing the band at its post-Woodstock performing peak. The running times of most of the tracks (three-quarters of which clock in at seven-plus minutes) will tip listeners to the show's jam-heavy take on covers of Sonny Boy Williamson (an ominous, revamped "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"), Willie Dixon (a slow, 16-minute burn through "Help Me"), and Chuck Berry (atypically economic romps of "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Roll Over Beethoven"). But with the band's own primordial originals (the titles "Skooby-Oobly-Doobob" and "Extension on One Chord" speak for themselves) there's an elemental, effusive--and, dare we say it--Ramones-like stoopidity to the tracks. which really, really bites. The sound quality is great. The band is tight. Just keep in mind that Alvin Lee has one solo that he plays in every frickin' number the band does. You'll know it when you hear it, trust me. The songs themselves are great, and of course Lee is a tremendous guitarist, but Ritchie Blackmore he ain't. Still, if you were to make a choice between this and "Recorded Live," take this. I've always thought "Recorded Live" sounded uninspired, mostly. This has got many of the same pieces, but done better. You don't get "Choo Choo Mama," but you get a much better "Hobbit" and an "I can't keep from crying" that doesn't sound like it was recorded under a bathtub full of water.

Ten Years After - 'Live At The Fillmore East' (Capitol) 2-CD.......2006-12-04

Fantastic two disc archive live release from a true music legend,the British blues rockers Ten Years After. 'Live At The...' took place over a two-night stand on September 27-28,1968.My only regret is not ONLY wasn't I there myself,but I've never seen these guys play live.Twelve track concert,with a duration of a little under two hours.You can't go wrong by picking up a copy of this title. Sound quality is great.Also priced pretty nice. Most memorable cuts are "Love Like A Man", "50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain" (one of my personal favorites), the bluesy (also fun)"Skoobly-Oobly-Doobob", "I'm Going Home", "I Woke Up This Morning" and their two Chuck Berry covers, "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Roll Over Beethoven". Would make a great gift for an old school fan. Highly recommended.

Ten Years After Live.......2005-12-23

This is one of the best live albums that I have. Alvin Lee is one of the must unterrated lead players in the world. His solo on HELP ME is simply the best the speed that he plays some on some of the songs is breath taking. Their verson of SPOONFUL is better then CREAM did on their live album. You can't go wrong buying this album. Also I would compare Alvin Lee's lead playing to Jimmi Hendrix and Eric Clapton any time He is one of the best in the world.

Ten Years After guitarist Alvin Lee's hyperactive guitar solos (fretboard attacks a speed-metal guitarist would be proud to unleash) caught the ear of British rock fans and built a bridge to the blues. The well-produced Cricklewood Green, consisting of all-original material by Lee, is the group's best studio effort. For a band that made its reputation with live performances, most conspicuously at the Woodstock festival, that's probably minor praise, but it's praise nevertheless. The extended workout of the hit single "Love Like a Man" is the centerpiece of the album, one that opens with the frantic buzz of the back-to-back road songs "Sugar the Road" and "Working on the Road." But Lee, ably assisted by keyboardist Chick Churchill, fleshes out the trademark Ten Years After blues frenzy with an assortment of atypical approaches and styles. "Me and My Baby" delivers Lee and the band in a relaxed, almost swinging, mode, while "Circles" is a rare ballad offering. The sci-fi blues of "Year 3000 Blues" and semi-psychedelia of "50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain" and "As the Sun Still Burns Away" further extend the album's reach without sacrificing any of Lee's guitar excursions. --Michael Point

I know you probably won't publish my review. But I am returning this CD which you promote as the "Reissue-Remastered" edition by EMI, yet what I received was the old Chrysalis recording which sounds horrible. I know it was a deal at $3.99, but I don't apreciate being lied to.

A classic album by an obscure band.......2005-11-18

It's a shame not many people know about Ten Years After. I'm very thankful for my Father for introducing me to this band. Alvin Lee is a masterful guitarist, years ahead of his time. The songs on Cricklewood are wonderfully written, and from track to track have a great flow. Buy this album if you're a blues/rock fan, you won't be dissapointed.

Resident Evil.......2007-07-14

This carries the feel of resident evil very well, though I was never a fan of the game. If you are a fan, however, I highly recommend this.

At least it's a break from the crap you hear on radio, and that automatically gives it 5 stars for me. Don't get the feeling this music is mediocre... 'cause it's not. It is very well composed.
So buy it.

Gorgeous Electronica to Chill With.......2006-08-01

Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn are living legends. Not since Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox were at their peak as Eurythmics has there been a stylish British duo whose music combines solid producing and songwriting skills with the spell cast by a vocalist of great individuality and power. Furthermore, at a moment in Everything But the Girl's history when most bands would have gone under or - even worse - become a living fossil imprisoned forever within the mausoleum of Adult Contemporary, EBTG chose to adapt rather than die, and along the way became one of the most widely respected and influential bands in the business. Until 1995, EBTG were no more than a cult band, known for their jazzy stylings and nostalgic evocation of a pre-rock era atmosphere of trenchcoats, Left Bank cafes and Nouvelle Vague hip (Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn are nothing if not living examples of cool hipster Euro-chic at its best). After gaining a lot of critical attention during the mid-to-late '80's jazz-pop revival, and scoring their first top 10 UK hit (a cover of Rod Stewart's "I Don't Want To Talk About It") in 1988, EBTG made the shark-jumping decision to go for US radio success. Their first album under their deal with Atlantic records (1990's "The Language of Life") remains their only major misstep, abandoning their customary sleek jazzy stylings in favor of necrotic midtempos a la Burt Bachrach and Carole Bayer Sager. Despite some airplay on the kind of radio stations targeted at suburban housewives, the record managed to alienate their older fans and wasn't particularly memorable to boot. Then, Ben Watt developed a rare bone-marrow disease and nearly died. Tracey Thorn's voice fell silent as EBTG took a hiatus which many fans feared permanent. Fortunately, 1994 brought us the deeply felt "Amplified Heart," a collection of stripped-down folk numbers which suggested a return to the fundamental roots of popular music-making (a few good songs, a great vocalist and perfect guitar play) and a fresh start. In 1995, fate intervened. A chance introduction and a newly-recovered Ben Watt's developing interest in electronic music led EBTG to producer Todd Terry's studio and a remix of an "Amplified Heart" track called "Missing." The house beats and the emotions were equally deep, and the song was an instant classic. Perhaps not since Bob Dylan abandoned his acoustic and plugged in his electric had an artist changed styles so abruptly. Overnight, EBTG went from being a little-known cult band to massive worldwide success. What could they do for an encore? And how to avoid the accusations of "selling out?" Miraculously, their follow-up record, 1996's "Walking Wounded" demonstrated Watt's new mastery of ambient and deep house chords, which - combined with Thorn's sensuous-yet-chilly-alto and the duo's basic songwriting skill - made for a powerful set and international hits like "Wrong" and "Mirrorball." EBTG had accomplished something few acts in the music business have managed to do - they changed their musical style, became worldwide successes and attracted a horde of new followers without alienating their old fans or losing critical acclaim in the process. Amazing! Although the group has been on hiatus since 1999's smash hit set, "Temperamental," Ben Watt's work as a DJ, producer and promoter has kept them current, and this remix set makes a beautiful stopgap until the long-awaited day arrives when Ben and Tracey return to the studio together. "Adapt or Die" might be subtitled. "The EBTG Story," for it demonstrates the reason for their successful transformation into an electronic act with soul. The songs here (aside from the now-inevitable "Missing" and the great "Corcovado") mostly come from "Walking Wounded" and "Temperamental," so longtime fans won't find any surprises here. The marvelous thing about this record is how fresh the songs still sound today ("Walking Wounded" is now 10 years old after all) and how relevant. Each remix puts Thorn's amazing voice front and center and never forgets (with one unfortunate exception) what makes every track click in the first place. This is first-class electronica, equally suitable to chill to or to dance to, with just the right balance between technology and soul. Highlights of this set are a gorgeous version of "Corcovado" which is impossible not to dance to, a stunning reinterpretation of "Five Fathom" and Kenny Dope's electro-jazz reimagining of "Downhill Racer." There is only one clunker on this set - an unfortunate remix of "Temperamental" which sounds like a funeral dirge and ought to have been erased the next day. Just skip over that one and let the rest of this gorgeous record flow over your spirit. For those of us wondering what EBTG will do for their next record, now that modern dance music is bigger than ever and electro-clash has come and gone, "Adapt or Die" is a great preview of coming attractions.

Pleasantly surprised.......2006-06-30

Everything but the girl has never sounded so good... truly awesome remixes, if you like good modern mixing talent coupled with oldies but goodies. I especially recommend Corcovado, which I think is unlike any other I've heard before... Beautiful voice, great sounds, and a pleasant flow from song to song. A highly recommended chillout CD...

A good dance CD that's unfortunately uneven - you'll like it but not greatly.......2006-01-08

This remix album of some of Everything But The Girl's better songs is good, albeit uneven. It does make for some pretty good dance music, though. The album starts off very strongly, but it starts to fall apart after "Corcovado". The remixes are mostly pretty well done, and on occasion even better than their original counterparts (see the first three tracks)! Singer Tracy Thorn has a pretty great voice, even if it's sort of a guilty pleasure. A good amount of people should like it, I think. This is mainly meant to be a dance album, and it somewhat succeeds in that department. I think the best way to utilize the album would be to play single tracks off of it. If you're looking for a good dance album then this will probably at least satisfy you. Recommended.

Must Have for the EBTG Collection.......2005-11-25

I recently went online to see if Everything But the Girl had released anything new since Temperamental and came across this CD. I immediately purchased and it hasn't left my car since. While granted that this a remix album, it does nothing to shortchange the absolute brilliance of EBTG. The best mix for me is Lullaby of Clubland. I think I listened to this song about 20 times in a row from the first time I heard it. The classics are also here: Missing and Wrong. It was listening to those two songs in the clubs ten years ago that first introduced me to EBTG, of which I am so eternally grateful. I recently played the Missing remix from the CD at a DJ gig I did two weeks ago and the reaction blew me away. Missing is still the quintessential club staple after all these years. EBTG rules!

Great Remixes........2005-10-25

Remix albums are a hot thing now and Everything But The Girl were definitely in line to release their own remixes on an album. I am always first in line to purchase any remix album that comes out and this release is definitely worth it. It contains some awesome tracks and EBTG are definitely one of the artists from the 90's that wont be forgotten. Especially since they re-released a Todd Terry remix of the massive pop club track Missing. Of course on this release they don't have the Todd Terry remix of Missing but a rare unreleased CL McSpadden Powerhouse Mix. The remix definitely takes me back to 1995 when club and house music were exploding and this track was definitely one of the songs to help do that. I especially love the Knee Deep Remix/Ben Watt Vocal Re-Edit of Corcovado. It's got that hot Latin House vibe going for it and it definitely gets the groove going. The DJ Jazzy Jeff Sole Full Remix of Mirrorball has been given that extra deep downtempo beat to make for a laidback soulful remix. It's originally a great track and this version has definitely improved upon how wonderful it is. Kevin Yost's Everything And A Groove Mix of Five Fathoms is just remix perfection. I originally had this remix on the CD single and it was refreshing to definitely to hear it again. I like the way they have broken down with the remixes and they include both very upbeat ones and laidback ones as well. Lastly it's excellent to end the CD with an acoustic version of Driving. I great touch to an awesomely produced CD. Worth it for any fan of remixes.
