4 out of 5 stars "Smooth Jazz Volume 3" offers meetings of the mind.......2000-09-28

Here's a good idea for a compilation: take some of today's hottest smooth jazz artists and highlight their collaborations with each other. The end result works well, treating us to the steadily-grooved-but-silky smooth "Mind Games" from Bob James and Boney James, the lush ballad "Mimosa" from guitarists George Benson and Earl Klugh, and the bright midtempo exercise "Strength in You" from saxmen Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright. There's plenty of vocals onhand too, as Michael Franks and Brenda Russell team up for the sultry "When I Give My Love to You," and Randy Crawford and Al Jarreau offer up the finest reading of "Your Precious Love" since Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Jarreau also joins saxophonist Boney James for the gorgeous ballad "I Still Dream," and the timeless Patti Austin/James Ingram chestnut "Baby Come to Me" gets dusted off as well.

Of course, some of the tracks don't fit the album's subtitle of "One on One": Randy Crawford teams up with both David Sanborn and Eric Clapton on one cut, and doesn't Fourplay plus Take 6 equal ten? Still, mathematical tecnicalities can't subtract from the appeal of Randy's "Knocking on Heaven's Door" or Fourplay's slowed-down-funk version of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." In fact, all the adding you'll need here is thirteen tracks plus a stable of smooth jazz's finest equals over an hour of fine listening.

Truly the Best of the Smooth Jazz series...., September 7, 2000 Reviewer: Carolyn J. Hooton from Sarasota, FL United States Before you listen to this CD, make sure your player is set on the "repeat" mode, because you'll want to hear it over and over again.... Bob James and Boney James start you out with their mellow piano and sax, soothing the tensions of the day... Snuggle down with the one you love and feel the warmth of Kirk Whalum's sax, and George Benson's smooth guitar...Have that box of tissues next to you when you here "Knockin On Heaven's Door" because the beautiful, but sad times of the '60's will wash over you... I have listened to smooth jazz for many years....but, Smooth Jazz Vol #3, is truly the Best of Smooth Jazz...If I could only have one CD in my collection....this would be the one.. Enjoy.. :)

Album Description

Chronicling the much-beloved/maligned genre from its rise in the mid-'70s to the early 80s, this seven-volume series features all of disco's greatest artists, biggest chart hits, and most important underground club smashes. Guaranteed to make you get up and boogie!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars love to boogie.......2005-08-02

this cd is very good. this cd makes me want to BOOGIE. this cd is a wise investment.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Volumes 1 & 2, but better than Volumes 4-7.......2005-04-05

Rhino had so much success with Volumes 1 & 2 of this series that they issued 4 more volumes in 1992. In my previous reviews for CD's in this series, I mentioned some disco songs that I wished had made it on previous volumes. The same holds true for these subsequent volumes. Most of the songs here are all great songs, but many of them I already had on the individual artists greatest hits compilations.

The 5 Star songs included here are:
1. Rock the Boat - The Hues Corporation (the first official disco record)
2. Get Down Tonight - KC & the Sunshine Band
3. I Love the Nightlife (Disco 'Round) - Alicia Bridges
4. Get Off - Foxy (the liner notes call this song annoying, but I love it and I also love this groups other hit from 1979, "Hot Number")
5. Macho Man - The Village People
6. Young Hearts Run Free - Candi Staton
7. Le Freak - Chic
8. We are Family - Sister Sledge
9. The Glow of Love - Change (featuring Luther Vandross on vocals)
10. Knock on Wood - Amii Stewart
11. Bad Girls - Donna Summer

The 3 Star songs(OK, but not great) included here are:
1. Boogie Fever - The Sylvers
2. Doctors Orders - Carol Douglas
3. Dancing Machine - Jackson 5
4. Love Machine - The Miracles
5. Dance (Disco Heat) - Sylvester
6. Hot Shot - Karen Young

The 1 Star song that could have been left off all together as far as I am concerned:
Soul Makossa - Manu Dibango

11 great songs, 6 good songs, and 1 dud is not bad for a compilation CD. Believe me, some of the later volumes get worse than this one. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Get Down Tonight.......2004-05-16

Get Down Tonight, Get Off and Soul Makossa. I love all these songs. They stand the test of time. Donna Summer, Village People and Sylvester. The very best from the disco era. This is a must have collection for any true dance/ disco fan.

4 out of 5 stars They Call It Boogie Fever.......1999-10-02

Again, Rhino dishes up more good disco from the 70's. Highlights include the favorites "Rock the Boat", "Get DOwn Tonight", "We Are Family" and "Bad Girls", as well as the not-as-often-encountered "Soul Makossa" and the rather mature (for disco anyway) "Young Hearts Run Free". A few of the tracks simply never did it for me - "Dancing Machine" sounds like a parody, and the liner notes don't lie when they call "Get Off" possibly one of the most annoying disco songs ever. In all, another good collection for you if you "want some ack-SHAWN."

4 out of 5 stars Admirable Collection of Disco.......1998-07-01

Despite a few oddities, the bulk of this CD is disco and pop hits from 1974 - 80. It's not as comprehensive as volume one, but it does boast all-original versions and great sound.

5 out of 5 stars I WANT TO THANK YOU.......2003-05-24

if it were not for this disc I would have never found a copy of Alicia Meyer's doing I Want to Thank You I instantly became a fan of the series and brought the othert two to add to the collection I suggest when you have old friends over and want a quick game of remember when pop in these CD's and relive some great memories again

4 out of 5 stars the golden days of dance.... again!.......2002-05-06

First, get all 3 volumes, put 'em on your multi-disc cd player, then let these dancefloor gems do their thaaang... Can be played at a bbq on Memorial Day, July 4, Labour Day, etc... or while you're playing Twister (tangled up in a pretzel position while trying to grab that Bacardi & Coke that's waaaay on the other side of the mat ;) whatever... you get the idea. Your cooler friends will scream and shout when their favorite joints get those memories flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars More than five stars.........2000-06-24

Anyone who has experienced the club scene (especially NYC) in the late 70's and early 80's must get this CD POST HASTE! I'm sitting here right now taking a trip down memory lane. The compilation of songs is PERFECT. That rarely happens. All of the selections are not only awesome but arranged well in their order. I seriously urge anyone who was growing up through that period (and enjoyed it) or who is curious about the club music to get this CD. Make no mistake, club/house music has a totally different flavor than your garden variety "disco".

3 out of 5 stars Different.......2007-05-12

I purchased quiet time players vol 3 based on the song "come by here" which was being advertised on comcast music. The track was recorded on piano with a very inspirational rhythm. Yet when I received it the recording was on ascoustic guitar very fast and out of the inspirational rhythm advertised. I am dissapointed and would not have purchased had I known there was a change. My rating is based on false advertising, the balance of the songs were enjoyed. I waited months trying to catch the title and artist, now that I have what a dissappointment. I even had ordered in my wish basket a month prior. Wish you could redo track number 5 'come by here'.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2004-09-25

For me, this music is fantastic. It lasts exactly one hour, which is perfect for my workout. I also like that the beat keeps you pumping at a high level. I haven't yet gotten bored with the music, and I like that one song just merges into the next without any pause. I would like to get another Shape Cardio tape based on this purchase, but am having trouble after reading the reviews, and listening to some of the selections. I definitely want to keep the BPM's higher than 125...any suggestions?

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for SPINNING CLASS.......2002-11-03

We use this in our spinning class at the gym and it is GREAT!!!! We never stop moving......

2 out of 5 stars Terrible Music.......2002-03-24

After listening to Cardio 2 which was very good, Cardio 3 was a real disappointment. It did not sound like original artist music to me. The beat was fast, which was okay, but I tried listening twice, and I couldn't stand it. I like disco, but this was garbage.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible Music.......2002-01-01

BMP to fast for ellipitcal or treadmill. Music was of poor selection. I wasn't moving and grooving. But, it does keep you instep.

5 out of 5 stars The pace is moderate to quick.......2001-09-21

People ought to know that the pace of this cd runs from 136 beats per minute to 144 before cooling down.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Opportunity to hear it from Coplands mind.......2004-02-02

Aaron Copland can be and should be considered the father of American concert music. He decisively created a style of music that needed to be made as we were reaching maturity as a country. This collection of his orchestral works gives a great outline of the music that makes Copland such a innovative composer.
I personally find that the most interesting part of this collection is the inclusion of rehearsal audio from the same recording of Appalachian Spring that appears on the CD. This offers a unique opportunity to hear what Copland's vision of his music was. I am one who personally believes that no performance of a concert orchestral piece can be heard as it was meant to be unless the composer is leading the ensemble. By hearing Copland conducting a rehearsal of one of his masterworks, the listener is given a greater appreciation for exactly what Copland's vision was for his own music.

A definite must have for lovers of the young tradition of American Music.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive American symphonic music.......2002-08-08

When I first was introduced to classical music, little attention was being paid to anything American. Edward McDowell was occasionally played. And Los Angeles classical music station, KFAC, would very occasionally play something by Morton Gould. Gershwin was largely ignored And there was Aaron Copland.

For my fairly young ears, the western flavor of the music was esciting. I could picture western movie-like scenes to the accompaniment of "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo". Indeed, such music is highly pictorial.

But now I'm also familiar with "Fanfare for the Common Man" and Appalachian Spring. I very much recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars The composer as conductor is unusurpassed.......2001-03-29

This is a reissue of recordings conducted by Copland himself that are totally definitive and, to my mind, superior to the recordings by Bernstein that are generally considered to be the best. The composer has a broader, grander vision of these works, taking them at a slower and more majestic pace than Bernstein and others. In his hands this is great classical music, not just upscale cowboy music. The sound quality is phenomenal for the most part as well, the engineers must have performed miracles because the recordings with the LSO sound better than almost any modern digital recording. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A great treat!.......2001-03-06

Here we have not only the original, complete chamber arrangement of Appalachian Spring in a pretty fine performance by Copland, but we get a neat 17 minutes of Copland rehearsing it, which is pretty cool for the Copland fan. Plus Nonet for Strings, well performed, which is a rare thing these days. The other disk is pretty average - Copland wasn't much of a conductor, but the chamber Appalachian and Nonet make up for it. Cheap and unique. A must have for the Copland fan.
