Beautiful!.......2007-04-24

I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.

The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.

THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22

Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

This review refers to the CD of "Migration/Dave Grusin"

If you are a fan of the film "The Milagro Beanfield War", and it's wonderful soundtrack, and have been looking for it's music on CD, you will find it here included in this fabulous jazzy delight from Dave Grusin.

Every track is a real treat for fans of Grusin and Jazz, as well as the film. An all instrumental, upbeat, light and airy feel, will have you replaying this CD over and over. These fabulous arrangements with Grusin on keyboards, feature some great musicians, including Branford Marsalis on Soprano Sax on "Punta Del Soul", and Tenor Sax on "Dancing in the Township" and a rousing "T.K.O." Other tracks included are "Southwest Passage", "Western Women", a wonderful rendition of "In the Middle of the Night", and a sweet and refreshing "Polina", featuring Hugh Masekela on Flugelhorn.

The Suite from the "Milagro Beanfiled War" is the icing on the cake. It's a wonderful southwest feel with "Lupita", "Coyote Angel"(this was definitive of this feel good film), "Pistolero", "Milagro" and "Fiesta".

There are a 14 delicious tracks in all. The first 9 all run a really good length, from 4 minutes to almost 7 minutes each. The Suite from Milagro has shorter but most enjoyable tracks that flow nicely. A fine quality recording that will give you a lift on long drives or around the house or office. A booklet with all credits is included.

I live in an apartment building and at least 3 people have stopped by my patio to ask what CD this is. It's highly contagious, feel good stuff!

Light Jazz at it's FINEST!!!!.......2004-05-09

The body of work on Migration are simply terrific. Rarely has there ever been a better selection of songs gathered on one album as this collection before you. Never one to shy from endorsing great music -- however subjective, I truly believe these songs showcase and define Dave Grusin's best work. In an age with processed drum loops dominating the airwaves, it's refreshing to revisit an album such as this, and be reminded what genuine musicianship is all about.

If ever there was a time to introduce someone to Jazz or instrumental music, this album would be perfect to do it with.

Often artists put out a "best of" collection of songs that were deemed radio friendly; with this album, you essentially have every single track as such -- it can stand on it's own because every single effort is equally great.

Particular favourites are: First-time Love, a quintessential ballad for every romantics out there. Polina is another wonderful track that forces you to ponder who Polina may be; perhaps a close love one of Mr. Grusin's? What ever the case may be, it's beautifully poignant.

If I could give it 6 stars I would.......2007-03-04

I wasn't even on the Amazon.com website tonight, but after listening to this CD for about the 500th time in the last 5 years (sometimes I play it all day long in my massage therapy room) I was moved to get on this site and rate this CD. This, as well as "Through Windows and Walls" are my all time favorite CD's. That says a lot as I have literally 1000's of CD's. Nothing can touch my soul and put me in a serene place like these two CD's. 9 out of 10 clients have asked me the name of these 2 CD's and have gone out and purchased them themselves. It's the musical version of what profound beauty looks like. I can't decide which of the two I like better. Buy both. You won't be sorry. Unless of course you're looking to rock out. Then forget it.

If I could only have 1 cd this would be it. Now if I could have 2 cds this one and Santana Shaman would take care of all my needs. I have felt that way for years. I finally had to get a new one, as it was worn out. IF you use music to create holy time, and love piano, cello or native american flute. This will probably rock your boat. These gentleman have in my opinion connected with that holy energy of life. What a gift. I want to say thank you to them.

I love the adagios, specially the piano pieces by Peter Kater. Hauntingly beautiful. I tend to listen to them at night. I call them soulful music. The ones with vocals are wonderful too. Uplifting. Inspiring even.

Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16

I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.

A Breath of Fresh Air.......2006-10-14

I thoroughly enjoy listening to this CD. Bronze is a renaissance hip hop head, producing and MC'ing. With so much garbage out there, I really appreciate his lyrics and creativity. He brings consciousness and street life together well. Bronze uses lots of old soul music samples which also set this CD apart from most other artists. I would describe the sound of this CD as Wu-Tang throwback, reminissant of Liquid Swords or Wu Tang Forever and all from a Detroit cat. It has that gritty head banging effect. My favorite song on the CD is 'Hear What I Say'. In it Bronze describes his journey thru the corporate hip hop world and what he did to land his record deal. Also he touches on the type of garbage music that he was bypassed for.

If you like real hip hop (not the grown man finger snapping variety), then cop this joint. It is a CLASSIC! Peace

"I'm migrating".......2006-09-08

I would give this five stars but I did have some minor issues with this album. There were a few spots on this gem that kept it from being cohesive. I can't help it I grew up with cassettes and that's how I rate an album. If I feel tracks don't feed into each other, it throws off my enjoyment of an album. That's my only complaint on this album. Other than that I was really glad I copped it. He is well rounded artist, good lyrically, great producer. Be warned though, the dirty production is comparable to Bobby Digital's "Digital Bullet", maybe a little dirtier. I will keep this one in rotation for some time. Thanks Bronze Nazareth for your contribution to hip-hop.

Heard Bronze on the Wu- Tang: think differently LP, and liked his flow. Definately one to cop, and tell your friends about. Flows and beats are amazing, refreshing to not hear bout rims and bling on an entire album. Real music. If u liked the think differently album, u'll like this.

and some fairly mediocre stuff
a Contenders classic, Light From Carolina, with only modest and some filler, All the Same To Me Listen Listen
He wwrites great songs, some are on this cd
But, he seems to be singing from some far away place, a place where he may be bored with the whole exercise.

amazon tracklisting inaccurate for bonus disc.......2005-08-17

As of the time this review was submitted, the tracklisting for the bonus disc was incorrect. It has 8 tracks as confirmed by the sticker, not 9 as stated here. The John Lennon song "Isolation" is not included. I will mention though, that a different live recording of it is available on a hard-to-find Japanese EP "Goddess on a Hiway". No regrets in springing for the special limited edition, though. The exclusive tracks are quality songs on par with the regular album, and the live KCRW versions demonstrate the true quality of their songs stripped of overdubs, bells and effects. Fortunately, "live" in this case doesn't mean audience, there is none. There are many good reviews of the disc one contents, and I will simply say that this is great music to work to, very melodic and beautiful, and devoid of any of the "challenging" listening on some of their previous work (which I'm not bashing). This is going to be in heavy rotation for a while.

Outstanding Collection.......2001-08-14

The voices of contemporary composers are so difficult to discover these days. It's one thing to read about fine new writers, but unless we seek them out and take the time to listen and tell others of our experiences, these voices will quietly fade away. Here is an opportunity to explore the music of seven such composers of modern American music. Most of this material was written within the past decade, and all of it is thrillingly performed. I am especially fond of Alex Shapiro's piano sonata. By turns contemplative, wistful and joyous, it's a highlight on a disc filled with bright and engaging new voices.

Mercury Rev's sixth album Secret Migration is a high flying psychedelic concept record filled with paeans to Mother Nature. Singer Jonathan Donahue has never been so in touch with his inner hobbit as he is here. Dave Fridmann remains the band's producer, which is excellent as he's the most interesting part of the band, and a great deal of the reason that the band's best album, `98's Deserter's Songs, is as good as it is. M. Rev has never been a wildly original band--they've been aesthetically joined-at-the-hip with the Flaming Lips for much of their career, and "Diamonds" almost sounds like a parody of Wayne Coyne and crew. But there's something beguiling about the band, a childlike simplicity that runs through their modern-day prog anthems. On "My Love," Donahue sings "Ain't it amazing when the seasons begin to change/Someone behind the scenes just seems pull some strings," and as daft as that sounds, well, he's right! As ecological stoner anthems go, these are righteous. --Mike McGonigal

An album certainly. A digital introduction of tones and lines. Perhaps the numbers crawl and build pottery office buildings, seventy stories of clay and middle management. Without the backboards, this album finds itself a chucker, a clear morninged

It may be the only example of convincing optimism in recorded history, but that's only because Mercury Rev take such care to paint leering gargoyles in every corner, scalding the hero's soul with their taunts as he righteously slashes his way through an incomprehensible life. Deep traces of morbidity and the ashy cobwebs of a past trauma, though never explicit as on All is Dream, still make themselves felt... in a funny way, defanged but even more troubling, as if, in the other world, sadness resonates more faintly and seductively than it did when it was real, calling us back to this barren rock like a siren's song. The height of morbid grandeur and beauty, this album is like a windswept embrace with Jacqueline Bisset circa 1974 as a nuclear bomb falls on your head.

A Pillow of Winds.......2005-08-15

A recent MOJO magazine review by noted critic David Fricke hailed Mercury Rev as the "American Pink Floyd".
Anyone looking to delve into this band might be slightly disappointed if that's what they are expecting to hear as those kind of comparisons are hard to live up to.
Having said that musically Mercury Rev does have a connection with early Floyd, Syd Barret through Meddle era.
However this band stands on their own and this album is quite good, better than even their last "All is Dream".
Rocking and atmospheric it is well worth your time and money.

What happened to their vocalist???.......2005-07-28

The Rev's previous album "All is Dream" always comes to mind when I'm asked what my favorite music is. This 1991 album, which still gets a lot of airplay in my car, featured vocalist Mary Gavazzi Fridmann on most of the tracks. Although she's listed as an "additional musician" on "Secret Migration", I don't hear her at all.

Too bad - REALLY too bad. What a disappointment. The Rev's musical style really lends itself to a female voice, and Ms. Fridmann handled the job with excellence, her delivery and her plaintive voice wonderfully complimenting the style of the music.

On the new album all the vocals are by a male vocalist, presumably one of the band's male musicians. He doesn't come close to matching Fridmann's ability to fill-out the emotional impact of the Rev's music. I agree with some of the previous reviews on why this album does not live up to "Dream". The song writing is not the same quality. But what I miss most is the great singing.

If you're considering your first Mercury Rev purchase, get All is Dream. You'll like it better.

Unendurable.......2005-07-17

I had the misfortune of seeing these pretentious avant pop pranksters perform live at the Sydney Opera House recently (supporting the peerless Finn Brothers no less, who have a lot of explaining to do - or their promoter does). The set went for an unforgivable sixty minutes and I'd warrant it was the longest hour of my life. Most of the auditorium wisely fled for the bar after three tracks of this prancing drivel, but I stuck around thinking it might improve. It didn't, and listening to this album proves why: Mercury Rev, in 2005 at least, are an abomination. I'm told their earlier work is more "edgy". I'm happy to take that as given rather than risk exploring it. This album, however, is about as edgy as Oprah on one of her "Remembering Your Spirit" jags. It's full of painfully earnest lyrics about the nexus between nature, love and the meaning of the universe. It sounds like frontman Jonathan Donahue has swallowed "The Tao of Physics", Lovelock's "Gaia" and "The History of Western Philosophy" and is now regurgitating uncontrollably. Rather than heeding the advice of the sages they mercilessly plunder and letting the inexpressible remain unexpressed, Mercury Rev seem intent to die trying. The songs are overloaded with nature imagery which might work if it wasn't so literal, so generic, so cliched. It would be syrupy and cringe-worthy enough on paper, but becomes utterly unbearable when given Donahue's unique vocal treatment which sounds like a yearning chipmunk cross-bred with Michael Stipe. Is this meant to be innocent and cute? Is it meant to be childlike and profound, out of the mouths of babes, etc? Or is it supposed to be emotional nakedness, some kind of attempt at vulnerability? If so, it fails. The band would do well to read John Berger on the difference between nakedness and The Nude: one's vulnerable, honest and open; the other's a self-conscious pose. I'm fairly sure which one Mercury Rev have in mind when they expose themselves, but you'll be cringing either way.

Exposing the mystery of the tribe of the Walking Time Bombs.......2005-07-09

I have read both reviews that exist in regards to this CD, and neither reviewer at the time knew who or what to think of Walking Time Bombs. This is who he/they are:
Scott Ayres, the former guitarist extrordinaire of the Houston-based hardcore band "Pain Teens"; with him you will find Frank Garymartin, who was one of the later drummers for "Pain Teens". As one who was a fan of both bands in their own right, it was an excruciating joy to hear the sheer genious these two bands exhibited on this CD (this is actually the second of two ambient recordings done under this name).
Just to step back briefly, for those unfamiliar with Pain Teens, just imagine absolute musical carnage, fronted by a hauntingly sexy Bliss Blood (who could go from rape victim to murderer in less than three seconds), Scott's masterful skills (both in straight play and in background/generated guitar loops),all the while with the TV blaring in the background...
This is probably the more avant-garde' of the two, and a giant step into an experimental future that covers so much territory from the very beginning as you will hear influences ranging from the macabre to new-age spiritualism; all layered within that haunting memory that both bands are known for...
Bottom line-a must have; you will never hear anything like this ever again...

Monstrous Ambience.......2000-06-27

It seems amazing to me that the same artists who were, as the 1980s incarnation of Neurosis(that of a hardcore punk band with a few electronic quirks)making fairly monotonous and mainstream aggro-rock, produced this formidable piece of sound sculpture; one that is darkly atmospheric and foreboding, and yet also beautiful and mystical. Ambiguous praise extracted, what this is is ambient, a collection of musical wallpaper more than that of actual "songs" as most of early Neurosis work was. If you are familiar with the softer, more experimental track of the band's later albums, such as Through Silver in Blood and Times of Grace, then compositions like that are what to expect from Tribes of Neurot. These tracks function as a kind of soundtrack to a terrifying horror film, for those of you unfamiliar with ambient. Only unlike most soundtrack music this is designed to be listened to singly, without pictures to accompany it. They succeed in being deep enough in soundscape complexity and sound source selection to hold the listener's attention throughout(with the exception of the sixth track, which just overdoes it on the minimalism that otherwise works beautifully on the remainder of Static Migration, and is the reason this disc isn't getting five stars).

Notable on this album is the inclusion of the Walking Time Bombs, whom I have not heard of before, but am extremely interested in finding out more about now that I hear the guitar work they did here. The style echoes of Robert Fripp's when he worked with Brian Eno, but is warped and made ominous and demonic to match the other sounds of the album, which include tribal drumming and electronic synth'n'sampler noises of all kinds. Be warned, however: this is not Neurosis. If you're looking for something to bang your head to, go for Meshuggah or Neurosis itself. This is brooding, contemplative music, and is worthy of a place in the collection of any ambient connoisseur, as well as anyone who found Neurosis' more experimental moments enjoyable.

Tribal vs. noise = primal bliss and sonic life.......1999-04-21

Tribal drums and metals played as such become interwoven with noise, electronics, and sonic guitars reminiscent of Buckethead. This is the side project of the lamentably predictable death metal band, Neurosis, (Tribes of Neurot,) and the Walking Time Bombs, about whom I've no information. ToN's other albums bring us to similar dark, expressionistic territory. The future primal now. If only to bring these individuals together the whole tired death metal scene (aka:noxious poo) has been worthwhile... any info on bands of similar genre, drop me a line. i'm always in the mood for new muzak, especially this stuff. yours in kaos, darvon jarvis
