Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. The title track, a politically right-on-time environmental rant, steers him back toward "Purple Rain" territory, as does "Lion of Judah" ("Guitar," oddly, doesn't--it's more of a straight-up, shout-it-out modern rocker). And the flirty numbers are seriously flammable: "Somewhere Here on Earth" seduces with a crackly jazz vibe, while "Mr. Goodnight" gets friendly with a refined slip of rap. Coolest of all are two tracks at cross purposes-- "Chelsea Rodgers" fuses funk with disco until it's so far off the hook it's in a heap on the floor, and "All the Midnights in the World" paints a picture of artistic maturity through piano and lyrics that lean hard on positivity. There's an elegance to it that Prince fans, no strangers to pop music that's truly sublime, won't fail to appreciate. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Simply put, Planet Earth is the album longtime Prince fans have been waiting for. Several cuts on this album revisit some of the classic Prince sound the captured fans all over the world and helped deem him an incomparable music icon. Superstar and legendary musician prince kicked off 2007 with a show stopping Super Bowls Half-time performance. Prince pulled out all the stops during the second most-watched super bowl broadcast ever. With an estimated 93.2 million viewers to entertain, Prince wasted no time showing off his stages powers and irrefutable guitar skills. He masterfully captured the attention and respect of music fans in general, while sending a message to long time Prince fans that he was ready to once again reign supreme.Customer Reviews:
For true Prince Fans.......2007-08-01
True to his classic sound.......2007-07-31
Bottom line, it's a good CD........2007-07-31
He's released so many albums and has so much material still locked up in the vault, you can't blame the guy for running low on ideas. All of the past greats still recording, from Paul McCartney to Stevie Wonder, aren't even coming close to their primes.
So instead of using the "Purple Rain was 5 stars, so Planet Earth gets 3" approach, I chose to judge it for what it is. All 10 songs are iPod worthy, and like 3121 and Musicology, this one has a couple truly Prince-calibur tracks mixed in. Some complain about the bad pacing, but this format makes you want to listen all the way through and gives the feeling of a true album, instead of a collection of songs.
A lot of reviewers will tell you simply to listen to his past work instead, but true fans can appreciate this just as a fresh Prince album that's among the best of the year and can be listened to front to back.
Disappointed :(.......2007-07-31

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.
Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

Donna de Lory has several solo albums out, but she's still best known as a back-up singer for Madonna, fleshing out choruses since the mid 1980s. There's more than a little bit of Madonna in De Lory's voice, at once fragile and vulnerable, yet still powerful, with a gospel-like yearning. On her own, De Lory has crafted artful pop on albums like Bliss and In the Glow, but she also tends toward the mystical and began incorporating Sanskrit mantras or Kirtans into her songs, a tact culminated on The Lover & the Beloved, a full-fledged Mantra journey. De Lory draws from the golden oldies of mantras, including "Hare Krishna," but revs them up with electronica beats, verse-chorus arrangements, multi-tracked vocals, and electronic textures sprinkled in with the sitars and tablas. Cameron Stone weaves his processed cello through De Lory's melodies and harmonium in serpentine rivulets, tying together the tablas of Girish Gambhira and the answering chants of Kirtan singer, Dave Stringer. Endowed with the materiel girl's sense of pop form and irresistible hooks, De Lory posits a confluence between pop and spiritual music, in which a repeated chorus has the same mantric effect as a chant. Her chants could be hymns to Krishna or a plea to a lover, but they are equally ecstatic and powerful. --John DilibertoAlbum Description
These Sanskrit mantras bubble with a groove and atmosphere that takes tradition to heaven and back. Donna's voice resonates with ether and earth, beauty that asks you to join in, become one with the sound of deep celebration.Customer Reviews:

Soothing. Peaceful. .......2006-09-12
They last a long time which is perfect for use as background music while working or while chatting with friends.
It makes it easier to relax to the melody, let your cares float away as the music wraps around you.
It's one of my favorites, I'm so glad I took a chance and got this one:)
Amazing Soulful Yoga Music.......2006-03-18
brilliant masterpiece.......2005-09-12
Just love it!.......2005-04-11
I found all the songs to be melodious. The lyrics are simple for anyone to remember easily. The tune is catchy and lingers on after listening. There is a nice blend of western and Indian instruments providing soothing background music. As in many Indian songs/chants, you will find repetition within each song, which is a nice thing. You probably will not notice it as it encourages you to remember the tune/song much easily.
I use this album in my Yoga classes regularly and come away humming for a long time. Just love it!

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

After a seven-year absence during which the Norwegian pop trio went off to paint or record solo albums, A-Ha return with Minor Earth Major Sky, their sixth studio album. Recorded in New York over the course of a year, this one is filled with characteristically subtle melodies, sweeping pop production, and a haunting melancholy. Some tracks (like the winsome "Sun Never Shone That Day") border on the bland, but there are songs that have bite--such as the icy, William Orbit-style ballad "Little Black Heart"; the big, blowsy title track; and the satirical "The Company Man," where the band sing frankly of being ripped off by their record label ("Deals fell into our arms / And out of our hands"). There's also a nod to the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" in the epic, socially conscious ballad "Mary Ellen Makes the Moment Count." --Lucy O'BrienAlbum Description
Sixth album for pop trio from Norway who first hit big in 1985 with their huge hit 'Take On Me'. 13 tracks including the first single 'Summer Moved On'. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.Album Details
After several years apart, A-Ha have roared back with their best album ever. The songs are expertly crafted, beautifully performed and yet dark and deeply emotional. Morten Harket's voice is crystal clear and he truly inherits the crown of best tenor in rock from the late Roy Orbison. Outstanding tracks include the title track, 'Summer Moved On,' 'The Sun Never Shone that Day,' 'To Let You Win' and the majestic beauty of 'I Wish I Cared.'Customer Reviews:
not a detour but not a hit.......2007-06-29
It's also noticed that they focused more on rock pieces and alternative moods, the guitars of Paul are amazing, and the use of a mild orchestra in almost every song is a new and nice touch. Within the songs the title track, Summer Moved On, The Sun Never Shone That Day and Thought That It Was You are excellent pieces perfect for adaptating for the new rythm of the album, they have moderate guitars, electronic arrengements and as I named before a great instrumentation. The songs To Let You Win, Velvet and You'll Never Get Over Me are songs that could be easily associated with the style of East Of The Sun..., but still experimental. The rest of the tracks are good, but lazy and out of tune.
In conclusion I would say that it's the worst among the best of A-ha's albums, but appreciatable after all.

I was hooked from the start.......2006-09-14
Don't know why all the good music comes out of Europe, very few good American bands in the last 20 years.
Great stuff, all around wonderful songs. Summer Moved On ranks as one of my all time favorites.

In the liner notes to Jamiroquai's debut album, lead singer and mastermind Jason Kay delivers a sincere, if oversimplified, screed about distributing the wealth and saving the rainforests. The lyrics follow suit: except for a single love tune ("Blow Your Mind"), Kay bemoans war, greed, racism, and conformity, or extols the power of music as a drug ("Hooked Up") or as a catalyst for social revolution. This is not Jamiroquai's most eloquent album, nor their strongest musically, what with most songs structured as long-form, open-ENDed jams weighing in at six minutes or more. Though interesting as a chronicle of Kay's musical vision taking shape, overall it's a document that will appeal most to Deadheads and jam-band fans. --Suzanne McElfreshCustomer Reviews:

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.
One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.
Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26
This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

fast trance, great selection!.......2004-02-23
But Magik 3's selection of tracks, and the order they're in is fabulous. "Ice Rain" has great vocals, and comes in a good place of the track order. The best parts of the CD are at the end, however. Everything from Lucy Cotter's "Breath in You" to Pob's "The Awaking" is awesome! some of the fastest beats i've ever heard, and DJ Tiesto mixes them flawlessly. and what better than to have Gouryella's very own "Gouryella" just before the final climax of the CD. just great!

I also recommend getting "Tiesto In Concert" DVD, he puts on a GREAT show!

Geothermic Chill.......2007-06-22
You've got tender dashes of ethnic flair ("Spanish Wind" and "Missione A Bombay"), eloquent swirls of swampy sonorousness ("Skyscraper" and "September"), and songs that'll lower your blood pressure even as they excite your brain waves ("Shadow of a Bee"). "Earth" mixes smooth, soulful jazz (Praful's "Sigh"), canyon-deep ambience (Melvin's "Magnolia"), and light-eyed beachcomber beauty (Yonderboi's "Pabadam") into a single, uninterrupted and relaxing ride. Notable without being obtrusive, classy without being too clever, and combining equal parts salsa and sigh, this is pretty much the pinnacle of what any good chill album wants to be.
Whether you're looking for a sonic tapestry for a late-night get together, or whether you need something subtle to hush up the silence while you study, read, write, or work, or even if you just want an album to dance with the mood of an intimate moment, this is, without exaggeration, a perfect choice. If you are a fan of any kind of chill, I have no doubt you'll want this album and its friends in your music library.
Sexy smooth cool.......2004-12-04
Earthy and delightful.......2003-08-13
I'm in love! Tracks like "Missione A Bombay," "Cadence," and "Sigh" are all perfect for easy-listening...in fact, this relaxed me so much that I used it last night to help me get to sleep. The name "Earth" is quite apt for this part of the series--every track made me want to put down roots and dance at the same time. I would recommend this to any easy-listening, new-age, world music, or jazz buff.
If the rest of the series is half this good, I'm buying all of them.
superior chillout.......2003-01-22
