The unique collaboration between Groove Armada's Andy Cato and left-field jazz/dance singer Rachel Foster that first premiered in the summer of 2001 gets an extended airing on the Pursuit of Happiness. The album is a decidedly laid-back affair, which never breaks above the "at rest" pulse of "Into the Sun." It's clear to see why so many have compared the Foster/Catto collaboration with Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn, as most of the tracks are strongly reminiscent of Everything But the Girl. "Best Days of Our Lives" and "Angel" also follow the pleasurable "spaced" style developed on Sade's Lovers Rock. Echoes of Groove Armada's infamous "At the River" feature heavily on "Jericho" and on the windswept album closer "Higher Ground." While all the stereotypical chill-out clichés can be used to describe the album ("lazy summer afternoon music," "4am post-clubbing soundtrack"), Pursuit of Happiness is perhaps three years too late, and although pleasant enough, serves as a quaint reminder of the summer of `99. --John Galilee

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2007-05-07

This is now one of my favorite cds that I play often. I think Rachel Foster sounded like a cross between Enya and Sade. I love her voice! Jericho is my favorit song. So far, everyone that has listened to this cd to has loved it.

Enjoy

4 out of 5 stars Weekend Players.......2007-04-04

I bought the album because I heard the song "Jericho" on my local smooth jazz station and liked the song. The rest of the album is quite interesting, but the best part is the song "Jericho". It is quite haunting.

5 out of 5 stars Set to repeat and sit back and relax.......2007-02-09

One of the best CD's I have ever bought. I wish they would come out with another album soon.

5 out of 5 stars Still never far from my player.......2007-01-20

This is one of my favorite cds that I play often - and considering I have over 2500 cds...
When I first heard this, I thought Rachel Foster sounded like a cross between Enya and Annie Lenox. Her vocals are superb. The arrangements are perfection. Jericho is so sensual. Francois K (one of my favorite djs) did a remix of 21st Century that kicks...)
Everyone that I have given this cd to has loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-12-06

I first heard of this album when my streaming radio rotated it into my playlist. I immediately bought it and have loved it ever since. It's no surprise that one of the Groove Armada guys is behind this (with a new female vocalist), because I love their stuff, and it's a similar style.

Great chill-out/lounge music for hanging out on the couch, with candles & a good glass of wine.

4 out of 5 stars Late 80's power pop excellence.......2007-02-08

TPOH were alternative before there was such a term. And as such I have more time for them than anything else released that would come under such a banner. They also sit in the power pop category nicely due to their sprightly rock 'n' roll with guitar solos and Moe Bergs energetic delivery. And there is more than just a touch of Cheap Trick with this mob - the whole comedy rock and amusing anecdotes bombarding the listener with good time vibes.

This album starts off with Hard to Laugh, a fun rocker despite being about some guy complaining about his girlfriend. And that is actually fairly typical for the album. But the bands buoyant delivery and the tidy production job makes it possible for quirky, depressing or strangely touching topics to be fun to listen to. And that is a real accomplishment by the bands main man, Moe Berg, who is the sole songwriter on this release.

Looking back on this album before putting my fingers to the keyboard it's interesting how well this album has weathered the passing years. Sure, if it's metal your after, go elsewhere, but if your in the right mood this album can still provide a fun listen. It may not cure world poverty but even after all the music that has passed through my ears personal teenage anthems like I'm An Adult Now and Looking for Girls still put a smile on my dial.

Fans of Cheap Trick (their funny bits) should give this mob a look - and also any fans of AOR who might be after something a little more whimsical and less tear jerking should also give this disc a listen. It's a very good starting point to explore this band as some of their later albums such as Wheres the Bone are a little more understated and more focussed on Moe Berts vocals to the detriment of the band feeling present on this album.

Highly recommended rock 'n' roll.

5 out of 5 stars TPOH - excellent band that slipped under the public's radar........2007-01-28

All of TPOH's cds are good to great and Love Junk rates as their best. Too bad the general public completely missed this tremendous talent.

4 out of 5 stars Good to hear them again.......2006-03-11

Had a tape of this some time ago; made the mistake of putting my tape holder over the gas tank on a long drive when I moved. The tape actually melted into the the back of tape holder. Had trouble finding the CD of it in stores; fortunately I found it here. So what do I actually think about it?

Minor late 80's classic by another great Canadain export; aggressive guitar hooks, quirky lyrics sung with abandon by Moe Berg and beautiful accompaniment by Kris Abbott & Leslie Stanwyck, all done to a boppin beat. Power pop at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars How to spot a classic in the I-Pod age.......2005-05-22

So I'm going through my old CD collection and loading songs up on my 40 gig (every song you could possibly want) monster, and I pull this disc out for the first time in at least 5 years. What a revelation. I put every song except "Killed by Love" on the I-Pod. I haven't done that with too many discs. Along with really catchy power pop tunes; there are brilliant lyrics throughout. "I'm an adult now" was the single and it is a great song, but it is far from being the standout cut."She's so young", "Conciousness raising as a social tool", and "Beautiful White" are my 3 faves. The chorus of "She's so young" is classic. "She's so young , she' got the answers. She doesn't need to question herself like I do." As my child grows into a teenager that line will begin to take on a different meaning than it did the first time I heard fifteen or so years ago. Whatever happened to these guys anyway? Great group.

4 out of 5 stars TPOH.......2005-02-19

If you only know TPOH by the tune "I'm an Adult Now", you should start with this disc to hear more from the band. "Adult" is a good, humorous track, but far from the best the band has to offer on "Love Junk". Do not judge the band by that song alone.

I had heard "Adult" many times over, but it was when I read Todd Rundgren produced the entire disc that I actually purchased it. His "touch" is on the disc and that is a good thing!

Moe Berg is my kind of tunesmith. I really like "Hard to Laugh", the kick off track. I was hooked! Other cuts that caught my ear are "She's So Young", "Looking For Girls", and "Man's Best Friend". Clever lyrics like the chorus for MBF:
-Cause I'm not the kind you want for your boyfriend,
but I'll be your man's best friend.-
I love it!

I know that this has been a hard disc for me to find, so grab when you can. "Love Junk" is not junk.

5 out of 5 stars Words are not enough..........2007-02-15

Ah...all we have is words to describe what moves us, and that's a shame because sometimes they aren't enough. I've followed the trail of genius from the Adventures of Pete and Pete televison show (full of songs and music that get to me like nothing else) all the way to the source of that genius himself, Mark Mulcahy. It has been an adventure full of pleasant surprises and this album is a wonderful continuation of that. To everyone who doubts the quality of this music, I would just like to say this: Give it a chance and let it grow on you because 9 times out of 10 it will. You may not like it at first, but you will. This is not always music that hooks you right away, but once you understand it's beauty, you simply wont be able to get enough of it. As always, great album.

5 out of 5 stars He Must Have Patience........2006-01-05

Okay. Let me tip my hat to Mr. Mulcahy and offer my utmost respect and adoration. I mean, he's been doing this for 21 years with Miracle Legion and then on his own, and for some reason he's STILL playing dives. I mean, seriously, how is he not the biggest sensation around? I've gotten all of my friends into his music (first through the Polaris album, then through this one) and they all agree he isn't getting his due. That's enough ranting for now, on to the review.
What an album! Oh my god, I can't seem to remove it from the stereo no matter what I do. I've heard everything Mulcahy's done, and I must say, as hard as it is for me to believe, he keeps getting better everytime. This album is easily in my top 20 albums of all time. From the beginning title track (an odd intro, but still well played) until the bar room sadness of the last song "He Vanished" (and the hidden track), this album stands and delivers, blowing your mind while entertaining and making you wanna rock out. The first time I listened to it, I just sat there stunned. I was amazed to say the least. Mulcahy takes simple chord progressions and turns them into ear candy so delicious that you'll be craving more instantaneously. If radio today was filled with songs like "Cookie Jar" and "Smack on the Lips", maybe I'd consider listening to the radio more often. Every song on here is strong and beautiful and catchy and makes me immediately want to break out my guitar and play along. "He Vanished" is an amazing tribute to a lost friend, "Be Sure" (specifically the violin solo) is the sound of heartbreak, "I Have Patience" is one of the best written 12-bar blues scale songs in years, and "Cookie Jar" is pop perfection. Don't just rely on my word, pick up this album for yourself. I assure you you will not be disappointed. Thank you Mark Mulcahy for doing what you do. If you're in pursuit of MY happiness, you don't have to look much further than this album.

5 out of 5 stars A gem.......2005-08-04

For crying out loud, isn't anybody buying this guy's albums? Mulcahy has never gotten his due, and it would be a shame for this particular album to slide under the radar the way that most of his past recordings have.

This is a return to a full rock band setup, but not a return to Miracle Legion. Mark's songs here are crisp, catchy and diverse. His voice has matured and possesses a full range of expression, and the supporting band - a variety of guitars, pianos, organs and strings, played by Mark, Scott Helland, Joey Santiago and J. Mascis, among others - is perfect.

One of Mark's strengths has always been the way he captures childhood experiences with wit, intensity, and a sense of innocence and wonder (it is illustrative that a video track on the CD shows Mark romping around in a field with pigs). This is the quality that gives his songs of anger and disappointment - "the things I love, don't bring me joy; the things I want, I want to destroy," or the sarcastic tribute to phoniness in 'Nothing But a Silver Medal' - more poignancy. He's not just a guy whose music you appreciate. He's a guy who you know, and who you are pulling for.

Someone recently wrote that Mark Mulcahy is who Thom Yorke thinks he is, who Jeff Buckley could have been, and who Michael Stipe was. This is a great characterization, and Mark deserves to be included in that kind of company. If you've never heard Mulcahy before, then look no further - you have found your new favorite singer.

5 out of 5 stars Mark Mulcahy needs your ears.......2005-06-16

This is more of a comment than a review. I just heard this guy on the radio. I rarely hear an original songwriter these days with Mulcahy's combination of sophistication and emotional resonance. I heard "Be Sure," "Patience," and "Can't Find a Reason to Let You Go," and, for once, I couldn't find a reason to turn off the radio.

I went right to the computer to order his CD. Please listen to his songs. If you don't nurture brilliance it may disappear. Order "In Pursuit of Your Happiness": it lives up to its title.

5 out of 5 stars So much good stuff here.......2005-05-25

I have listened to "In Pursuit of Your Happiness" about 8 times through and I cannot remember the last time I felt so good when the aural pleasure response one feels when an album finally 'kicks in' hit me (probably listen 5).

This is a great album, working on the mind on a number of differnt levels. I did not think I could like an album better than "Smile Sunset," but this might be it.

Miauri's organ and Scott Helland's bass stand out for me (along with Mulcahy's distinctive guitar sound). Mascis' leads are subtle and wonderful as well. When you finally get to "He Vanished" you are as wasted as the narrator of the song.
What is the significance of the polaroid shot of the Organic Tomatoes dated 09-10-01 (the day before 9-11)?

This is one of the mysteries of this compelling album.

I like the fact that it was recorded in Hartford (recently cited as the No. 1 stress city in the USA).

This is one of Canada's best exports. Crunching guitar riffs mixed with intricate female vocal harmonies and self-deprecating yet humourous lyrics. If you like other great Canadian bands like the Barenaked Ladies and Crash Test Dummies, these guys should please your palatte.

4 out of 5 stars A better compilation than sex & food.......2005-12-31

This album includes all of the band's singles, plus some important album tracks. It also includes two new tracks; a cover of Prince's when doves cry (an excellent cover in my opinion) and Hey Mary Anne (a song that's standard TPOH). It also includes the original version of I'm an adult now; which I haven't heard since I was in high school. To top it all off, the songs have been remastered in 24 bit, and the refreshed sonics are a real treat. The only song missing from this compilation in my opinion is walking in the woods.

I have sex & food and just purchased this one, and in my opinion, if you have to choose, get this one as it is hands down the better of the two.

3 out of 5 stars An expanding of the TPOH outlook.......2007-02-08

This album features the band in fine form, giving flesh to Moe Bergs seemingly inexhaustible storehouse of cute stories, bizarre tales and outrich comical moments. A range of points here to consider;

- this album has a continuation of amusing social and sexual anecdotes as per the Love Junk album.
- a slightly darker feel to many of the tunes as compared to Love Junk. It's not a bad thing but it's a different vibe - tunes like Crashing Down and Bored of You would be cases in point.
- a bit more boy/girl whining. The band aren't matinee movie tearjerker types yet, but hasn't Moe ever thought about writing about the happy phase of a relationship for once, or does all his relationship song inspiration come from the bad places? Check the lyrics to Heavy Metal Tears - dude lighten up!

This album sor of passed me by a little, opener Cigarette Dangles could of been on Love Junk but it does feel a touch flat. But thiere is still plenty here for fans of either their debut Love Junk and later albums like Wheres the Bone. Get Love Junk first, it's pretty groovy, then pick this up or Wheres the Bone.

4 out of 5 stars Not Love Junk, but Not Bad..........2006-02-07

I agree with Scott's review. The Downward Road is a good CD with some catchy songs. Start with Love Junk though, then seek this one out. Cool notes about The Downward Road...Todd Rundgren plays a little guitar on Love Theme from TPOH, and there is a Jules Shear tune, A Vila in Portugal, on the disc. That was enough to get me to listen a little harder! Cigarette Dangles and Pressing Lips are stand out tracks to me.

This is a disc that grew on me with repeated listens.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great, but still unmistakeably TPOH........2004-04-16

A letdown for me after Love Junk and One Sided Story. There's still some good material and some wry observations from Moe and crew, but the songwriting is a bit spottier and the sound is more arena based, and less inventive than in the past. I'd still buy it, no problem!

4 out of 5 stars I Always Thought They'd Break a Little Bigger.......2006-08-20

TPOH was a Canadian band that put out some terrific material over the course of its underappreciated career. This CD provides a great overview of what you missed.

4 out of 5 stars Time Passes Over Heroes.......2002-01-14

In '88 when I first heard a demo version of 'I'm An Adult Now', I knew this was a band that deserved to be heard (if not adulated) as well as seen. Moe Berg's lyrics, and suitably well-enunciated delivery as well as the tight simplicity of the band's chops made it a college band par excellence.

And even better, one that wrote hummable tunes, one album at a time.

Time passed them by for many reasons, mostly because they never achieved success in the U.S. charts. If they fizzled in Canada, it was because their subsequent albums sounded quite redundant in comparison to 'Love Junk' and it's equally good follow-up "One-Sided Story". They'd shot their load, but not before we were able to hear so many great power pop singles back to back.

"I'm An Adult Now", "New Language", "All I Want", "Hard to Laugh", there seemed to be no end. Kudos for releasing this well-deserved retrospective. All these songs deserve to be accessible.

5 out of 5 stars A note to Razor & Tie from a TPOH fan:.......2000-12-16

Get these guys back in the studio, pronto! I bought this disc, despite owning the 5 CDs it's culled from, as a gesture of support to one of the great lost bands of the last 15 years. I have loved TPOH from the first drumbeat of "I'm an Adult Now" right through the last echo of "The Truth". A tight, rocking band with wit and humor, TPOH deserves a listen from any fan of smart, snappy music. If you can get enough people hooked with this disc, I would suggest a re-release of their back catalogue. The world deserves a second chance to hear this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Ignored band- what a crime.......2000-08-20

I have been a fan of the band since Love Junk but got away from them because I couldn't find any of thier cd's. Put a search on Amazon and found this "best of" jem. This cd puts todays music to shame. Big hooks, good guitar work, and interesting lyrics put this band ahead of most of the music of thier time. Saw them live at the Pittsburgh show that Moe refers to in the liner notes ( they got drunk with the Replacements). Listening to this cd brought back that night- the best night of rock and roll of my life! Buy this cd- you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Canadian power pop at its finest!.......2000-06-27

The best rock and roll band north of the 49th parallel. As one record company put it, the only band to ever "bridge the gap between AC/DC, Abba, and Woody Allen". Kick-a** punk rock licks intertwined with melodic harmonies, and overlayed with sobering and darkly comedic lyrics. Okay, so my musical vernacular isn't doing this band justice - just by the album already! You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Pursuit of Happiness Fan #1.......2003-05-03

Hey, I have CDs of The Downward Road, One Sided Story, Love Junk and Where's the Bone! Moe Berg is a brilliant musician and the harmonies that this band comes up with are enough to blow me totally out of the water, and I am a self-professed musicologist!! TPOH is a band that, in my mind, never got their just success while bands ... came along with their "misery and death" approach to music and made fortunes. That whole thing ... Either way, ... grunge are LONG SINCE dead, long live TPOH!!

5 out of 5 stars It's bloody brilliant !.......2001-12-19

(...) This release is just so damned invigorating and fun to listen to that I can't recommend it enough.

It's a "power pop" masterpiece, and the fact that all the songs run together make it a terrific "party" record.

Buy it, buy it, and Moe Berg, please reform TPOH and come and play in Phoenix, these suckers need something to wake 'em up !

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Classic!.......1999-07-06

Great, great, great! Too bad no one ever talks about this CD. I had no idea what to expect. I dug the cover art. Was I ever rewarded! It's just chock-full of killer hooks & harmonies. It also has a healthy dollop of humor. And it all runs together as one piece. Beautiful. Fans of the db's or the Beatles should check this one out.

"I'm An Adult Now" was on TPOH's album "Love Junk", which sadly, is out of print. I hope you don't end up dead in a ditch, with a head full of chemicals, like some cheese eating high school kid.

I heard a great song once called, I believe, "I'm an Adult Now" by Pursuit of Happiness. Is this the correct title for this song? Can anyone tell me the name of the album on which it appears? Thanks for your help.
