5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau with Deutsche Grammophon.......2005-11-08

"An die Musik", aptly named after the famous Schubert lied of the same title, is an excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's recorded output for Deutsche Grammophon over the past 56 years. On the CDs, there are six Schubert lieder from Fischer-Dieskau's 21 disc set with pianist Gerald Moore, (dating from ca. 1970) and other lieder by Wolf, Richard Strauss, Brahms, and Schoeck. Also included are two chansons of Claude Debussy, and arias from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" and "Don Giovanni", both conducted by Ferenc Fricsay; small part of Fricsay's Orff "Carmina Burana" (rec. 1949), Schubert's "Dichterliebe" cycle with pianist Jorg Demus; and the 4 Ruckert lieder with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic. Fischer-Dieskau is amazing, with such a wide repertory, and such enthusiasm for singing such varied and different styles of music.

The bonus DVD, lasting about 28 minutes, is very interesting to watch and listen to. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and pianist Sviatoslav Richter peform 8 famous Schubert lieder in the great room of a hotel in a remote Bavarian village, in utterly charming and rather informal surroundings. The camera work is minimal, the sound, very fine but a little low level mono: filmed in 1978. Fischer-Dieskau looks alot younger here than more recent photos of him, but a little older and more classy than the photos I'm used to seeing of him, which date from the late 1960s. Fischer-Dieskau and Richter work as one, and their partnership and great working relationship is evident from measure 1. There is no doubt watching this that they had alot of fun performing for the cameras.

I am grateful DG released this set: 2 very full discs at over 70 minutes of music each, + the DVD of a telecast not seen since 1978. The sound is very good, even in the mono tracks, and if you like lieder and opera excerpts, you will be delighted. I mention this as one who's experienced Fischer-Dieskau's recordings for 25 years, and been usually delighted by them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two sides of a brilliant band .......2005-08-09

This second album of the very eclectic German outfit Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft stands as a true industrial classic - it's enormously creative and enormously influential. Taking a few cues from Cabaret Voltaire, this emphasizes the "danceable" side of industrial while remaining uncompromising, and the result is a document of fearless experimentation mapped out and held together by cleverly constructed rhythms.

One of the most ingenious features of the album is the way it presents two sides of the band: a disciplined, technically skilled studio band playing stripped down rockish industrial during the first half, and a much noisier, wilder band, captured live, playing a more forebodingly experimental industrial during the second. The fact that the first half is so controlled will make the second a more nuanced listen, because we know that there are carefully crafted patterns behind the madness.

As for the music itself - it simply rocks. The first seven songs create a sort of nervy, paranoid atmosphere with staccato instrumentation and bizarre, unpredictable vocals that will just as soon rise up to the falsetto level as drop down to low, ominous mumbling. The guitars in particular create this schizoid effect as they stab forth in shrieking, angular bursts, leaving the "melodics" to the squelchy and occasionally harsh synths. "Osten wahrt am langsten" is a stunning opener, building an ominous chant out of a simple synth riff, very tight drumming, low vocals infused with quiet menace, and breaks of screeching white noise guitar - a classic. Other highlights of this first side are "co co pino," with it's decidedly bizarre take on a disco beat, another classic synth riff, and hilarious Spanish-inflected vocal trills, and "nacht arbeit," the most industrial of the first set, complete with militaristic barking and a thumping rhythm.

The moment "Gewalt" begins we know the album is about to get even more insane. I would think of this as a "noise tune-up", as the band tries out some grating sound samples over a heavy rhythm and some groaning machinery. We're then plunged straight into the screaming, the pounding, and the erratic shifts in speed and sound. It's quite an exhilirating set of live industrial, very fierce and unfriendly, much like what the apocalyptic "ein produckt"(DAF's first album) would sound like with vocals. Rarely has such impassioned screaming been captured on record as it has been here - and the band manages to do creative things with the screams, allowing them to melt into moans or wails, or pop up where least expected. Rather than picking out more song highlights, I'll end with this message for experimental music fans: GET THIS NOW. It signaled the beginning of a new era in music.

5 out of 5 stars The noise-fest extravaganza.......2005-07-21

I've bought this a couple of months ago as it was one of those albums that I had wanted for practically ages. As soon as I put it in the CD player it had to be the most explosive piece of music ( not literally ) I'd ever heard. A volatile singer singing at times silly lyrics to extremely noisy and volatile music in the background. The second half of this record was a lucky accident as it were as the person who was recording it meant to record the whole Wire concert ( which you can find part of in Document&Eyewitness ( which I also recommend )) but set it up all wrong. Just as well, the set is as you can probably tell by hearing it really fierce.

In short, you must buy this album. NOW

5 out of 5 stars Wire meets Devo meets Neubauten.......2005-07-07

If you're a fan of Devo's "Mongoloid Years," any of Wire's stuff--but especially the Pink Flag phase--and Einsturzende Neubauten, then this record should be a part of your collection.

This is the perfect mix of punk, industrial, and pure comic genius: crunchy minimalist synthesizers, dissonant guitars, and a very hyper vocalist who alternates between barking and screeching the lyrics. When you realize these guys were doing this in 1980 it just makes it that much cooler, too. Audiences must not have known what hit them!

4 out of 5 stars It's patchy, but there's some great stuff on here.......2003-12-10

Like a previous reviewer, I picked this one up in a bargain bin, for fifty cents. Apparently obscure German synth-punk from the early 80s is not a big seller at Camelot Music.

It's a startlingly unique album. Haphazard disco beats collide with chaotic, mistuned guitar squeals. Ludicrous German lyrics are barked in a frighteningly militant voice (one track translates to: "I'm the sexy Lola/Der Liebling of the fashion/I have a pianola/at home in my drawing room/everybody knows me/but no one can touch my pianola." WTF?). Synths chirp and squawk amidst the din, and anyone who thinks that synths are incompatible with punk rock needs to listen to this album.

There are also a number of more sober, orderly tracks, mostly repetitive, slower in tempo, and heavier on the electronics, but these are less interesting than the aural assaults.

Recommended tracks: "Die Lustigen Stiefel", "Die Fesche Lola", "Co Co Pino".

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind masterpiece..........2003-09-02

Bought this aulbum for 25 cents in a bargain bin as a gag gift for a co-worker based only on the cover art. Never gave them the thing and it sat around still wrapped for @ a year. Bored one night and finally opened it up and played it. I was totally enthralled from start to finish. An amazing and breathtaking work of art. It pushes the limits of music and sanity, while retaining a keen sense of humor. The all German vocals only add to the intensity. Not for your everyday top 40 listener, but if you're a musician, interested in industrial, early electronic, or experimental music, you simply must check this out. If nothing else you can invite your friends over, have some beers, and say "you're not going to believe this crazy thing". Really though this is one of my favorite recordings EVER!

5 out of 5 stars Three composers one poet.......2004-12-21

Before listening to this CD I only knew Pregardien from his
performances in the passions and cantates by Bach. He is one
of the most expressive evangelists. Here he proves to be also one
of the best Lied singers. This is one of the most beautiful
performances of Schumann's Dichterliebe and Lieder by Schubert
and Mendelsohn. The program is linked by the fact that these
are settings of poems by Heinrich Heine. The poems are all about
unanswered love, but are characterized by a mood of hurt sarcacasm,
which makes them stand out from other love poems of that age.

It is interesting to hear the differences in the treatments of
the text by the different composers. Most Schumann settings end
with a sense of continued longing, the singer ending but the
piano continuing to hold on to the melancholic mood. Mendelsohn
stresses the more uplifting, even fairytale like mood of the
poems. Unlike Schumann he likes to repeat certain sentences.
Schubert's settings are rather bitter and expressive. Listen by
the way how effectively Schubert evocates the evening silence
of a city watched from a boat in the water (and how effective
        the fortepiano accompanies Pregardien's piano).

Pregardien shows here the same flexibility and expressive use
of registers that he brings to his performances of Bach. I don't
know a more expressive version of the Doppelgaenger. The old
fortepiano (an original from 1825) played by Andreas Staier
sounds very special, full of colors unknown to a modern piano.
It sounds almost like a harp in Mendelsohn's "Auf Fluegeln des
Gesanges". Also check out how Staier very effectively ends
Schumann's Der alten boesen Lieder. The song ends with dumping
the coffin with all the poets sorrows into the sea. Staier's
playing evocates how it slowly fills with water and then sinks
        quietely out of sight.

I can only conclude by saying this is a must have CD.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless moment in time.......2000-08-20

Of the dozens of recordings of Shumann's beloved and bitter tale of "Dichterliebe" out there, this 1956 live recording by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerlad Moore surely ranks as one of the greatest. Yes, even within the hallowed halls of Salzburg, we have the unwelcome wanton intrusion of coughings here and there; yet the remarkable artistry of the 31 year-old Fischer-Dieskau is immortalized in each song. Heed the brooding tempo and the enunciation of the very last line in "Ich grolle nicht" -- all the more desperate and impassioned than in his 1985 recording with Alfred Brendel. And in the very next song, feel for yourself an entire world of bitter pain in the exclamation "Zerrissen mir das Herz" (has rent my heart asunder). Time seems to stand still. This is a recording to treasure, much like Fritz Wunderlich's 1966 recording of "Dichterliebe" on DG, whose weightless noble tenor ineffably floats throughout the album. Shumann himself was wary of transposition: "The composer finds the right keys in much the same way that the painter selects the right colors." But this is one rendition that even Shumann himself would have adored.
