Filling the gulf between OK Computer's epic progressive rock and Kid A's skittering electronic theatrics, Hail to the Thief borrows equally from each. Its title implies that this will be a collection filled with songs of anger and dissent, but Radiohead no longer howl at the moon like they did on 1995's The Bends. Instead, they use eloquent metaphors and complicated arrangements to express the uncertainty, fear and anger arising from the 2000 U.S. presidential election and a post-9/11 world. There's no doubt about where Thom Yorke and company stand; the prog-rock break on "2 + 2 = 5" and Yorke's terror at the thought of being "put in a dock" make that immediately clear. But there's a prevailing sense of powerlessness here. The tinkling piano behind the cold sonic surface of "Backdrifts" and the brief, swooping melody in the middle of "Sail to the Moon" are islands in a sea of confusion. Like the band's best work, Thief requires more than a few listens to fully appreciate, but those who stick around will be richly rewarded. --Matthew CookeAmazon.com

Amnesiac is great, i like the mysterious to all but two or three of the songs (track 03 is one of them), pyramid song is my favorite. spinning plates is amazing live.
Kid A is one of my favorites and is such a beautiful album to listen too. But not for anytime or day though. It kind of like " healing inner pain" kind of music, amazing, but sometimes. at the right time.

Yesterday's headlines blown by the wind.......2007-02-23
A big part of why HAIL TO THE THIEF is such a success is that the band combines the strength, aggression, and subliminal protests of their early albums with the oddity and surreal techno sound of KID A and AMNESIAC. The result is Radiohead's finest album since OK COMPUTER, and also their darkest and most unsettling. On HAIL TO THE THIEF, the band is no longer trying to take a stand. To them it seems that time is up, and they're just going to rub it in our faces, with lyrics like "We can wipe you out anytime," "You have not been paying attention," and "We tried but there was nothing we could do." Listening to this album, I can't help thinking that Radiohead is the best band since The Beatles, and that HAIL TO THE THIEF is the Radiohead equivalent to THE WHITE ALBUM, a diverse collection of songs (though these are, of course, considerably more morose than anything The Beatles ever composed). Though there's not a bad or even lackluster song in the bunch, there are a number of songs that stand out above the rest, such as the firey opener, "2+2=5" (a reference to George Orwell's masterpiece of dehumanization and paranoia, 1984), the rolling "A Punchup at a Wedding", the brilliant "Myxomatosis" (the very sound of rage), the dreamy, drifting "Sail to the Moon", the surprisingly down-to-earth "Go to Sleep" (the most "normal" Radiohead song since OK COMPUTER), and the hopeful yet bizarrely morose "A Wolf at the Door".
The band is at its finest, both performance- and composition-wise. These are some of Thom Yorke's most intricate and meaningful lyrics, to which Thom lends some of his finest vocals. Strongly supporting him are razor-edged guitar from Jonny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien, prominent bass by Colin Greenwood, and impressively varied drumming styles from Phil Selway. The album's themes deal primarily with the feeling of paranoia, distrust, suspicion, and disillusionment from the 9/11 attacks as well as the Iraq War and the U.S. government's handling of the situation (guess who the titular "Thief" is?). It was clear that Radiohead was back in a big way - they experimented on KID A and especially on AMNESIAC, and HAIL TO THE THIEF was where they combined that with their pre-Y2K sound to make one hell of an interesting recording.
Mixed Feelings........2007-02-05
2+2=5, There There, and Go to Sleep stand out as benchmarks; songs like the Gloaming and Punchup at a Wedding, though daring and original, do not quite flow with the album as a whole. This being said, the better songs on Hail to The Thief make it a great success musically and experimentally-- but, all things considered, I don't feel it quite reached the five-star mark.

Soundtrack of the 2002 Motion Picture by Neil Jordan with Soundtrack Music Written by Elliot Goldenthal and featuring Tracks from Among Others, U2's Bono Doing Quite a Jazzy Cover of the Frank Sinatra Classic "That's Life", Leonard Cohen's "a Thousand Kisses", Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin's "je T'aime...moi Non Plus" as Well as Songs from Rachid Taha, Cheb Khaled, Cheb Mami and More.Customer Reviews:
Perfect Movie, perfect soundtrack.......2005-09-15
Moody, Smooth, and Sexy........2005-04-09
The soundtrack starts off with the rousing Arabic "Minuit" by Cheb Khaled. The next vocal track is the sexy meditation on a gambler's life "A Thousand Kisses", which is thankfully long. Those who have seen the film will remember Leonard Cohen's gravelly voice well. "Verite" by Rachid Taha owes a little to disco, and Cheb Mami & K-Mel's "Parisian du Nord" is a French/Arabic rap. Johnny Hallyday sings "Black is Black" in French: "Noir Est Noir". U2's Bono delivers a nice rendition of "That's Life", popularized by Frank Sinatra.
Elliot Goldenthal's jazz score makes use of homemade instruments -plastic utensils- to create the sound that enhances the film's reserved tone and Nice's underground energy. It's alternately haunting, industrial, lyrical, synthetic, and frenzied. But it is, perhaps ironically, better when not alternated with the vocal tracks. The last track on the CD, "Redemption Rehearsal", is a long sensual piece that touches upon every style in the score along the way. This soundtrack nicely evokes the brooding, grittiness, and glamour of "The Good Thief" and contains some fine examples of world music as well.
Luscious, utterly unique.......2005-01-26
Tracks of Elliot Goldenthal's atmospheric and percussion-intense score interlace with ballads (Leonard Cohen's "A Thousand Kisses...", Bono's gorgeously languid "That's Life"), French rock (Johnny Hallyday's "Noir C'est Noir"), and a number of songs from French-North African artists (including Cheb Mami, who collaborated with pop singer Sting in his "Desert Rose"). "Minuit" and "Parisien du Nord" - combining traditional Algerian desert music with Western influences: blues, hip-hip, rock and roll - are probably unlike anything you've ever heard. There's also the cinematic and dreamlike instrumental piece "Flashback", and legend Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin pairing up in the delicious "Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus".
The soundtrack journeys through a dizzying array of musical styles, that all somehow come together in a melting and stylish whole. There are no weak moments. This CD is highly recommended, especially to anyone who enjoyed the movie, or is interested in world music.

Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is a setting of a lovely chunk of prose text by James Agee describing an evening from his childhood. An accomplished singer himself, Barber's vocal writing is expert, and this work must rank as one of the finest examples of the art of word-setting in any language. Barber perfectly captures the conversational quality of the text, while at the same time clothing the words in an atmosphere of gentle nostalgia. It's a masterpiece that Dawn Upshaw sings with keen insight and lovely tone. The remainder of the program is creatively chosen as well, making this one of the finest vocal recitals available by an American singer. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
Excellent Material for Ms. Upshaw........2006-04-26
Like any good sampler, this recording's strongest draw is the fact that it makes one interested in tracking down the complete works by Barber, Menotti, Harbison, and Stravinsky. And, while the package includes all lyrics, everything is in perfectly clear English. A perfect addition to other American classics such as 'Porgy and Bess'.
Keeps Getting Better.......2005-03-02
The Barber alone is worth five stars.......2004-01-16
Buy this disc...twice!.......2002-07-20
Dawn Upshaw, vocal actress extraordinaire.......2002-01-01
I want to make special mention of the Harbison _Mirabai Songs_, as it seems to have been maligned somewhat in other reviews here. This was the work that most kept me coming back to this disc when I first bought it. I think it is a masterpiece, and one of Harbison's best and most important works. (Apparently I'm not alone in my admiration of the piece, because I've heard it on a number of live concerts in recent years, so it seems to be having a successful performance life.) Harbison's song cycle is by turns exciting, sensual, driving, longing, beautiful. The orchestration for the small ensemble is masterful (as Harbison's efforts at scoring always are), and Upshaw expresses all of Mirabai's complex emotions enchantingly.
The _Rake's Progress_ aria also deserves individual comment. In this engrossing example of Stravinsky's neoclassical style, Upshaw assumes Anne's air of fierce determination, and brings the disc to an absolutely thrilling climax on a concluding high C.
All of the music on this terrific CD is very accessible, and the performances are stellar. The recorded sound is very clear and immediate, as one would expect from Nonesuch. It's one of my favorite discs in my entire collection, and would probably be so for the Harbison and Stravinsky alone.

Customer Reviews:
a unique moving hip hop album.......2007-06-14
Like a Thief in the Night is an entertaining and insightful album from start to finish. The title track is convincing enough to listen the whole cd throughout.
Amir's album succeeds where these artists occasionally fall back into regular rap routines with cursing, gun talk and women.
Because of Amir's open religious tone he is able to produce a full album with "struggle" related issues sans vulgarity both in language and subject. For this I feel he is superior to other rappers.
In addition the album is an enjoyable hearing for any listener of hip hop, the beats and raps flow, and on multiple hearings you begin to appreciate Amir's unique talent of making the subtleties of living life something worth listening to.
I would compare Amir's lyrical content to the College Dropout by Kanye West, because both artists focus on relationships between many types of people from a view other than at the end of a gun.
Great listen and convinces you to want to see him perform live. (hint hint youtube)
The roots of Hip-Hop.......2007-06-08
Make no mistake about it, he is Muslim and apparently a lover of Ahlul-bayt (peace be upon them), and it is not unusual for him to fall into the ecstasy of his own lyrics and start chanting la ilaha il-Allah (there is no god but Allah). In that way it has the symbolic texture of classical Islamic poetry as though it were the modern-day qasida or ghazal.
Still, his lyrics are also very political, very pro-black, and very anti-oppression. He is part of the new wave of hip-hop artists trying to reclaim the culture that was abducted and molested by the mainstream music industry. And with guest appearances by cultural pioneers such as the Last Poets and hip-hop reformist and fellow Muslim Mos Def, the message certainly hits home.
The only complaint I could really have about the CD is that it's not enough. I would like to sit and pick this brother's brain for hours, and unfortunately, I only get a little over 50 minutes. May Allah reward his efforts and purify the bounties that he receives through his jihad.

To Add and to Drop - WHY?.......2006-06-25
For those who were interested in obtaining the Thief soundtrack being mainly interested in the one song, Beach SCENE (most of the other songs can be found on other Tangerine Dream albums), please realise the following differences between Beach THEME and the now dropped, Beach SCENE.
The song, Beach THEME is a much shorter track (almost by half) and there is a very cheesy, acoustic, "rock n' roll", drum beat that was mixed/dubbed over the original Beach SCENE song which has the much more mellow and less invasive electronic, sequenced drum beat in it. It's Beach SCENE that was both heard in the movie and over the airwaves back in 1981. If that is the song you remember (fell in love with) and are looking for, do NOT buy this latest release. Keep looking for those Out Of Print CDs - they are out there.
On a lighter "note", it's very nice to see they added the ending/end-credits song, CONFRONTATION.
This is a lose/win scenario for THIEF soundtrack fans - it all depends on which song is more important to you. If you already have the earlier releases with Beach SCENE on it then buying this latest version will now complete a defninitve soundtrack for them as that last song in the movie has now finally been added to the official soundtrack.
Beach Scene+Beach Theme = a lack of Confrontation?.......2006-05-07
I don't know what has caused this reissue to have what appears to be multiple versions, or for the music to differ from the track listing. As another reviewer pointed out, there's plenty of space on the CD for both the longer Beach Scene and Confrontation. Maybe somebody didn't listen to the tracks that carefully. I give it three stars for what's actually on the CD, and penalize two stars for what's supposed to be there but isn't.
dun da da dun dun dun dun da da dun dun dun da DA DAA!.......2005-04-05
This is the newer, US release of the soundtrack to the 1981 Michael Mann film. This time, we actually do get the Craig Safan-composed 'Confrontation', the long, Floyd-esque track that played over the end sequence of the film, you know, where Michael Mann uses excessive slow motion, blood splattering, and bodies flying to bring the story home.
I think the star track here is Diamond Diary, a 10-minute piece that plays in the opening sequence of the film as Frank pulls a diamond heist. It builds and builds with that sequencer working overtime, and the drilling synths and whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiizzz sounds and whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrr sounds all over, with some big, fat guitar chords thrown in. Then it comes down, settles with some keyboard overtures, and then it cranks up relentlessly again, with some thumping thrown in to match the on-screen suspense. It's a masterful track, perfectly edited into the film, as is most of the score.
For some reason, the track Beach Scene is not included here, but it is included on the original UK release. Since it's a Tangerine Dream track, it's not like they had licensing issues like with Confrontation, which wasn't available on the UK release but is here. Beach Scene is the longer version of Beach Theme, a more fully-realized track. Perhaps they thought it was just 'bonus' so they chucked it? Perfect example of 'soundtrack madness' and the endless quest for the music you like from a particular film.
Some of the music here isn't heard in the film, or is heard briefly, but Diamond Diary, Beach Theme, Dr Destructo, and some of Burning Bar are all memorable from certain scenes. No weak tracks really, though note that some of Igeneous appeared on Force Majeure, two years before.
Some of this is reminiscent of Sorcerer, the excellent album to the William Friedkin film. Fans of that will enjoy Thief. The disc is indeed short, and it's not presented as a real soundtrack album, actually. The order of tracks appear random, or in a more album-listening sequence, rather than presenting a score from beginning to ending as most soundtracks do. Note other frustrated Amazon reviews, but music-wise it's a good disc.
Nice to finally have, but..............2005-01-07
Give me your thoughts!
