Truly beautiful.......2005-09-26

Anugama is absolutly beautful,truly. But that's just me. I can mainly tell about mt fav. Eternal Traveller and The Empty Sky. Don't get me wrong cause the others a great but i prefer these two over all. "Eternal Traveller" is truly amazing so soft, quiet, mystical and just b-e-a-utiful! I absolutly love that song, but again, hey....that's just me. It's like when you wake up early (5:00am or so) or real late at night and you go outside, your standing by a big field with lake and it's real foggy or misty with just a small hint of light to see it all. That gorgeius veiw with the mountains in the background. Real warm but too warm nor too cool, crickits and leaves gently blowing can be heard in the distance. (If your even a little into this) You get a warm tingly feeling in your heart thats spreads all over your body. This atmosphere mixed with this music then gives a chill that makes you smile a little. That's what this song is like. Listening to this song eyes closed or not you just fade off into the music. I highly recamend this cd to anyone who's into the New Age music, or get the feelings like the one above. "The Empty Sky" is great too, but it seems like it's a sequal too Eternal Traveller that's all. I still love though. Sorry this message was so long peoples, can'nt help myself sometimes. But i would get if I were you(even though I'm not) cause it's truly worth it!

This one has 14 songs & is just as good as the other.
Great for listening to on the beach if I do say so myself.

Beautiful Blend of Relaxing Music.......2004-06-27

This album is a selection of songs by Anugama that were chosen to enhance relaxation. At 74 minutes long, this stout CD makes use of classical guitar, flamenco guitar, steelstring guitar, Hawaiian slide guitar, recorder flute, electronic flutes, traverse flute, native American flutes, shakuhaji flute, keyboards and native American drums. The songs vary quite a bit in sound & style, so it's never boring. Yet it's always relaxing. I'm a massage therapist, and this is one of my favorite CD's to use in the office.

Entrancing and uplifting.......2006-09-28

Satkirin Kaur Khalsa has a very special and entrancing voice showing us the depth her being. Her voice is particularly attuned to flow in the sound current of the sikh tradition. I find her second song, the mantra of Guru Ram Das particularly healing and easy to chant along with her in a very trance like manner that will allow me to move out of the way and let the sound produce its miracles in me. For some reason this chant is particularly helpful in healing matters of the heart. It is not by coincidence that our inner Guru resides precisely there, in our very own heart.Chanting to him in this way, we reconnect with our center and it feels good.
her other CD, Universal Prayer is also beautiful and for a crazzy dance, try to hear her latest Mangala Charam.

The Janacek on this is the best available on compact disc.
The version of Hey Jude---a plodding, overrated song to begin with---is absolutely god-awful; akin to nails on a chalkboard to this beautiful album.

humble opinion of a music student.......2004-07-02

It was brilliant to use the music of Leo Janacek as the score of this fantastic film. It gives a great feeling of the country and its people. The performances on this soundtrack could be better, but the occasional coarseness - that sometimes annoys me - suits the movie. The two songs shouldn't be next to all that great repertoire, but they are a part of the soundtrack...While I wouldn't compare Debussy and Satie with Janacek as they are completely different, I do agree that it's worth listening to!

5 stars for the janacek, anyway..........2001-02-17

i have to disagree with the last review in that if I could take the version of hey Jude off, plus Joj Joj Joj, I would in a second. they stick out sorely and are unlike the rest of the album, which introduced me to janacek, for which I'm forever grateful. the piano songs in particular rank up there for me with Debussy's solo piano work, and Erik Satie's. evocative, delicate, melodious, accessible; just gorgeous. the versions here seem good to me - I'm no expert, but they are better than the versions on the janacek CD this album led me to buy.

Goober Patrol are almost as cool as Govern Mental.......2004-10-04

Nah just kidding, they are both cool. This is a great CD if you are into punk rock. Sure, they can't sing, but Goober Patrol have cool riffs and some great basslines which overcome their inabilty to sing well. They are also slightly political, which I didn't know before buying the CD, but it made the lyrics a lot better (even if i can't understand them)

the range of Reynolds' genius.......2002-09-18

This Neuma disc is superb, and with works in three different forms, would serve as an excellent introduction to Reynolds. The title piece, "Personae," is a violin concerto, definitely one of best contemporary works in the genre. Janos Negyesy plays violin with the SONOR Ensemble and computer-processed sound -- Negyesy and SONOR, like Reynolds, are based at UC San Diego. As Reynolds explains in the liner notes, the violinist takes on four roles in turn -- conjurer, dancer, meditator and advocate, the last of which subsumes the other three in summation. A stunning, cutting edge work. The second piece is "The Vanity of Words (Voicespace V)," one of Reynolds' works with computer-processed vocals, in this case the tenor Philip Larson of UCSD. This one features a text from Milan Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being." Unlike the concerto, this radical form is not recognizable as "classical music," but requires open ears and mind to appreciate. I am more impressed by this "pure" application than I am by "Odyssey," an avant-opera with computer-processed vocals (also on Neuma -- see my review of "The Paris Pieces"). Finally, "Variation" is a 22-minute piano piece, performed by Aleck Karis, also at UCSD. Reynolds mentions Webern as a point of reference, and I am reminded of Schoenberg's piano works, though the level of complexity is doubtless multiplied.

Review of Lightness of My Being.......2002-07-12

A true work of art transcends the technical. It lodges itself directly into your being by the sheer force of emotion from which it was created. Lightness of My Being was spawned of young talent still holding fast to ideals of a genre which has probably seen its greatest talent pass. Therein lies the beauty of this album. Though not perfect, its flaws are easily overlooked by those who simply love music. From the lightness of Alone Toghether and Vodka & Lime to catchy tunes like Grapefruit Lick, I found much of the album pleasant and entertaining. The original compositions held their own amongst the standards, a trait I find rare nowadays. But most of all, I was moved by the emotional Strawberries and Angels. With its powerful climax, it's probably the best and most sentimental track on Lightness. That all said, this album found its way to a permanent place in my 5-disc carrousel.
