5 out of 5 stars Can I Borrow a Star?.......2007-07-21

Gosh... this should have six stars. To think that this is how "lumbering late-'90s salsa"* originally sounded. A great collection of tunes w/ names of artists and bands to broaden your collection.

* borrowed this from a review of something else by José A. Estévez, Jr., in All Music Guide

5 out of 5 stars IT'S CUBA!.......2007-01-10

It's definitly a great collection of the most pure and original "son" of Cuba. In spite the fact that it's made in NYC (what may bring up some old prejudice, specially from "latinos")you will feel yourself as if you were walking on the streets of Habana, partying at the Malencón, drinking the best ron and somking the great habanos cigars. In one word it's Cuba's spirit and character through music.

5 out of 5 stars durable, catchy, timeless.......2005-12-02

No it's not Fania. These guys try harder to push the envelope of Son in a different direction. Enduring performances that reveal increasing production skill. The editorial approach is chronological, so there's a progressive feeling to the anthology -- a direction. Well-recorded, well-mixed, well-chosen. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars Classic modern latin dance music from the 1970s.......2005-06-04

This swinging set of New York salsa/son cruises through the sweet, summery sounds of old-timers such as Chocolate Armenteros, Henry Fiol, Rey Roig, Roberto Torres and several less well-known (but no less thrilling) Cuban-American dance bands. It's great stuff, a collection that easily holds its own next to all the other salsa and boogaloo reissues out there these days. The liner notes are funny, though, with two parallel perspectives on the "salsa" vs. "son" nomenclature -- there's one strident argument that says the word "salsa" was all marketing/public relations BS, and another, mellower version that says, "Who cares? It's the same music, and it's all really good." I guess I slide into the second camp: when you've got stuff that sounds this sweet, why get all hung up on the name? This is a great collection, definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-05-11

First of all, don't pay any attention to the editorial that references the BVSC as being somehow even remotely related to this release. This is straight-up NYC Cuban Son. Not Salsa. Roberto Torres, founder of SAR Records explains a bit of what Jerry Masucci's role played in the term of "salsa" coming to be used by the masses to define virtually everything remotely Latin. There really is no "salsa." It's a b.s. term of merchandising. But, for this release...

Hermanos, you cannot get any finer outside of Fania. These are what the cats who wanted to venture outside of the Fania and Allegre record labels were laying down. If you wanted to get beyond the amazing double trombones of Colon and lofty coro of Lavoe/Betancourt/Cheo/etc, you found this. With soneros like Roberto Torres (who is a great friend/neighbor of mine in fact), trumpet legends like Chocolate Armenteros and the legendary Henry Fiol (if anyone remembers Saoco), you cannot go wrong here. That's just to name a few.

Get this, get this, get this. I cannot state that enough. Salud to, of all labels, Astralwerks for putting this out.

4 out of 5 stars Early Ensemble Work.......2004-04-17

This is actually the 1988 debut album of Bensusan's jazz ensemble. In addition to featuring Pierre Bensusan's notable guitar work, the group includes Emmanuel Binet (bass), Denis Benharrosh (percussion), Didier Malherbe (sax), George Al Safi (violin), Frank Sitbon and Mico Nissim (piano & keyboards), and Doatea Bensusan and Shandy Sinnamon (vocals). Some, like Malherbe and Nissim are well known, especially in Europe, but all do solid work backing up Bensusan as well as displaying their individual skills.

The range of styles is quite broad as well. For the most part light jazz with a touch of swing is the standard (La Cour Interieure), but you will find dashes of café accordion, funk (Agadiramadan), Celtic (Shi Bhig Shi Mhor), and, just went you've relaxed, an reel or two (The Last Pint). As is usually the case, Bensusan serves up an eclectic mix aimed at pleasing (and showing off) rather than representing a particular trend.

Also as usual is Bensusan's strong, thoughtful play. He has never been a guitarist to simplify a melody just to make it more digestible. Instead he relies on his skill as a performance artist to build his popularity. He shows, even on his early albums, the talent which later blossoms into the kind of playing that attracts a wide range of interests and avoids the extremes of shallowness or inaccessibility.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely one of the best!.......2001-12-15

I have nearly 500 CD's, made up primarily of acoustic guitar. As a player and fan of acoustic guitar musicians, I have to say that this is one of the finest CD's I own!

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Bensusan album.......2001-09-05

Judging by the other reviews, this album provokes mixed reactions. Personally, I love it. The compositions are wonderful and original, particularly "Mille Valles" and "Agadiramadan". And the other musicians are masterful, particularly Didier Malherbe's flute and sax, and Binet's fretless bass.
I came to this one after buying some of the earlier albums. I didn't much like the Celtic stuff - perhaps because it seemed affected and unrealistic after years of listening to genuine Celtic artists - a bit like hearing a Japanese banjo player who has learned out of books. I did like Musiques and Solilai, though, particularly the tunes which foreshadowed Spices.

4 out of 5 stars Pardon me while I disagree with my predecessors ..........2001-04-25

My introduction to Pierre was with this album and Solilai. I found both to be refreshingly different, both from other music in my collection, and from each other. I don't particularly care for track 7. No particular reason, I just don't. I would not categorize this as THE must-have Bensusan over the rest of his discography. I wouldn't care to hear it in an office setting, either ... it's much too lively and varied. It plays like a soundtrack, so put it on when you've 40 or so minutes to spare, and write a screenplay in your head, just for fun ...

2 out of 5 stars Elevator Bensusan........2000-07-03

Yuk. Not because of Pierre Bensusan's efforts. In fact i respect and understand his attempt to try something a bit different. The problem is, I just dont like this kind of music.

This is not solo guitar with some vocals like his other albums, this is fully produced, jazzy-mainstream new agey music. It would work well in an office or elevator setting.

NOT the heart felt solo guitar chops and vocal genius that his other recordings capture. If you get the pleasure of listening to any of his other albums, you will think its an entirely different musician. This is so different, i have to say its Pierre Bensusan, "NOT"!

I reccomend ANY other album by Bensusan, besides this one. Unless, of course, you enjoy mild, new-agey, jazz instrumental albums...if thats the case then you may like it.

4 out of 5 stars Special Herbs & Spices (beats & rhymes).......2006-07-14

Dope emcee dj/producer lp. Honestly I doubt Doom was with him while recording this psudo LP; because all of the beats are joints from other Doom projects or from Special Herbs. (Hence the title.) "Special Herbs & Spices" is mixing Doom's herbs with Grimm's "spices." Being the current state of Grimm and Doom's relationship, this is the closest product you're going to get for a long time.

Some of the tracks seem a little rushed with the rhymes... but I was told he freestyled a good portion of this. Other M.I.C. members make cameos along with Fat Man Scoop who psudo hosts the LP, which leads to the following questions.

Is it an album? A mix-tape? Don't know. It kind of falls inbetween the two as it's an entity of its own, but also a promotion for Grimm's triple LP "American Hunger."

If you're a HUGE Doom fan you might be dissapointed due to the metal faced villan not being on a single track and have hearing these beats before. But, if your a fan of Grimm and are looking for the closest thing to a colab LP outside of their split EP or Iblys... cop this joint.

1 out of 5 stars POOP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-12

5 out of 5 stars A manic monday and a plate of gritty ol' meatloaf............2005-08-17

Actually, i am a big fan of "pheonix/lyrical landscapes" type of stuff.....M.F Grimm on the other hand is a tad simple and raw........But this album is a MUST HAVE when you are driving down the east coast concrete jungle.. we call our own... Yes,,, Doom's beats is what makes the album what it is. Grimm's previous work doesn't stand higher whatsover, and never will without the aid of Metal Face. It's just a fact, Percy's grim voice and Dumil's instrumentals go together perfectly and get the job done beautifully. I feel Grimm without Doom is like cake without the frosting..something missing..If you never heard him before.. Grimm is sorta like the underground version of Kool G Rap, but more slower yet effective with his punch like the Thing....I am not even going to get much into detail,,,,pretty much,,, check it out for yourself...The kid got voice and some good concepts...and Doom's beats backed em up to give em a high score! Nuff Said....

5 out of 5 stars Why Is Grimm So Slept On?.......2005-05-01

I'll keep it short and sweet. Ill beats by Doom. If you know anything about Grimm, you know he's been through some serious ish. The emotion is definitely present in his delivery and his flow is lethal. Grimm is the illest emcee the world has never heard of. Cop this and support Day By Day Entertainment and all of the unheard emcees and underrated producer/dj's (MF Doom, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor, Jay-Dee, Madlib, Marly Marl, Jazzy Jeff)that keep the underground alive.

5 out of 5 stars Great Duo.......2005-04-05

Grimm and Doom have been working together for years. This nice little package has Grimm rhyming over Doom's excellent production. MF Grimm's take on the older beats is new and refreshing. Pick this mix up and you won't be let down.

A nice album to kick back and just listen, or good background music. Very upbeat. Has a wonderful tropical feeling.
