Austerity and beauty all mesh on "The Nine Worlds"........2007-02-11

I was entranced by the debut release by artist Achillea. To my peasant surprise, I leanred that it is also a side project of Enigma's guitarist and in terms of side-projects, Achillea is almost as good as Enigma.

The debut album has a similar trademark to Enigma's album but the tracks stand out altogether with beauties like "Odin's Hill", "The Garden if Lisfaraine" and "Seeres Prophecy". Overall, "The Nine Worlds" is almost like a sequel to Enigma's third album from more than a decade ago.

This is highly recommended.

Ambience Spectacular!.......2006-11-27

I am a big fan of early Enigma and having found a first solo release by co-producer of Enigma's Jens Gad, I decided to purchase this release from Amazon.com. Jens is a superb handler of the guitar and it was a pleasure to hear his contributions on Enigma especially on 'Cross Of Changes' and the song 'Turn Around'. But it is good and fitting to see his first solo album be released, and whilst there is alot of similarity with Enigma, he brings to his album a more reflective, softer ambient driven sound that is both spiritual and refreshing. It is a nice chill-out album.

'Achilles' provides sweet and sensual beats with gregorian chants, soft guitar rifts, and a ethno-flavoured landscape. It should be noted that both Jens and his singer Helene are danish and this album is fashioned after numerous Danish folklore. Therefore you expect Danish lyrics and you do get a mixture of Latin and Danish with some English mixed in. All in all the mix is beautifully orchestrated and well-done.

The 12 tracks on this albums offers the listener pure music bliss, and it will take you on a journey that is much needed and is soul nourishing. There is no need to go through each track. This album will mean different things to all people who listen to it. Open your mind, have a open opinion and enjoy. I have and still do.

Pretty nice music, a little bit short of Enigma........2006-11-22

It's quite nice, althought definitely not an Enigma, the female voice is beautiful, but quite monotonous all across most of the songs. Still a good addition to one's New Age sound collection.

If you liked Enigma's "Cross of Changes"..........2006-11-14

Only now that I've heard The Nine Worlds do I appreciate how significant Jens Gad's influence was on the sound of Cross of Changes-era Enigma. The guitar style from that album's "I Love You, I'll Kill You" permeates, but never dominates this album, and I love it. The synth-based writing and arrangement styles are familiar as well. The title track, "The Nine Worlds," is something of a sonic "missing link" between the two albums, with a touch of chant, tablas, and a guitar sound one step closer to "I Love You, I'll Kill You" than the rest of this album.

The first Achillea song I heard was "Cape Porcupine". It remains my favorite song from the album, and is representative of what you'll hear throughout The Nine Worlds. Helene Horlyck's vocal stylings are featured on over half of the album's tracks, and she shares writing credits on those. Her high end is somewhat breathy, and has a piercing edge that frustrates my appreciation of her contributions, but the lower end of her range is beautifully smooth. "Othila - The Rune Masters" is a welcome exception, which I can only attribute to its guest writer/producer, John Tonks.

The Nine Worlds is a great listen for a bit, but there isn't enough variety to make it a really great album. I'm perfectly happy to listen to the whole thing passively, but when I'm listening actively, I typically only get through the first five or six songs ("Odin's Hill" is a highlight I never skip) before changing CDs. I would expect your affinity for The Cross of Changes to be a good indicator of how much you'll like The Nine Worlds.

Austere Ethereal Beauty.......2006-08-30

This album needs a few listens to allow its true beauty to unfold.
If you are after the lush percussive sensory smorgasboard of Enigma , you will be disappointed.

Put aside your preconceptions and open your mind to the pure spare instrumental arrangements accompanied beautifully by Helene Horlyks sublime ethereal vocals . Everything is pared back to a delightful minimalism that sometimes sounds so spacious that the songs seem otherworldly.

Definitely a match to the other great works of Delerium, Enigma , Amethystium etc

The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.

This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...

But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)

If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).

But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.

The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23

If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.

The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.

Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.

Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).

Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.

Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.

And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).

I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).

I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).

If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

SciFi Album gift.......2005-07-20

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16

If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

The compositions on Béla Fleck and the Flecktones' three-CD set Little Worlds are ambitious, audacious, and, at times, a bit absurd. The musicianship of Fleck and his compatriots bassist Victor Wooten, saxophonist/flautist Jeff Coffin, and electro-percussionist Future Man is as accomplished as ever. Even when they are engaging in a slice of silliness like their version of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett," which they re-imagine as a sort of a rap rhapsody, the intelligence and sheer inventiveness of the performers keeps the music from descending to a trivial level. The 27 tracks are practically swarming with guest artists from a wide range of traditions, including Bobby McFerrin, Branford Marsalis, Nickel Creek, the Chieftains, Fleck's former New Grass Revival band mate Sam Bush, and the Tuvan throat singer Congar Ol Ondar. Perhaps the most intriguing visitors are Pamelia Kurstin, who plays Theremin on a number of tracks, and Jake Shimabukuro, a remarkable young ukulele player from Hawaii. The music on Little Words combines experimental sonic textures, complex harmonies, intricate rhythms, and charming melodies with impressive instrumental chops. Bela fleck is one of the greatest musicians AND all of the flecktones cds and bela fleck's cds are the greatest CDs. And imagine that- the only person who disagreed with EVERYONES opinion that bela fleck is the best called bela fleck a "her." oy, I have seen the flecktones 3 times , bela fleck trio and the acoustic trio and NOT ONCE has bela fleck nor his band members have ceased to impress nad amaze me. BEla fleck is AMAZING.

Accessible Genius.......2006-02-16

Once again, the Flecktones show that they can command whatever style of music suits their fancy, and that musical barriers mean little to a group of such high musical skill and precision. With multifaceted compositions that somehow always remain listenable, the Flecktones demonstrate with Little Worlds that genius may just be the ability to say something exceedingly profound with simple language.

Listening through the disc, one is struck by the similarity between the album and an actual live Flecktones performance--if only in terms of the sheer level of invention taking place. EVERY song seems different from the one that preceeded it. So much so, that before the the album is even half over, the listener is inclined to ask, "Is there anything that this band can't do?"

The Flecktones master the pure sonic creativity of using their instruments in interesting ways in "Centrifuge" and "Longitude." The latter tune is truly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. While Vic plays soft chords faded in on a volume pedal, Bela wrote the chords out backwards, solo-ed over them, and reversed the tape to give his banjo solo an eerily beautiful sound.

Whether your favorite flecktones music is their funk ("Snatchin'), celtic ("New Math," "The Leaning Tower"), World Music ("Puffy," "Costa Brava"), or Bluegrass/Folk ("Off the Top," "The Last Jam"), beautiful ballads ("Reminiscence," Poindexter") or great guest contributions ("Sleeper," Derek Trucks on "Pineapple Heart"!)...you get the point. Creativity like that is all over this disc.

My recommendation--no, my demand--is that every true music lover buy this album and devote a good chunk of time to listening to it, getting familiar with its smallest details. When you examine the complex, inventive, and (as always with this group) technically amazing details of this just-plain-fun album, it will be almost impossible to believe that "little thought went into the final execution of each track," for example.

What happened to the Flecktones.......2006-02-16

Listening through this set of CDs was downright depressing for me. I discovered these guys back in the early 90's. Every CD they put out was awe-inspiring and so neatly put together. It seemed every time I would pop in one of the older Flecktone CD's, I would find something different from when I listened the last time.

I purely do not understand how this could get such high ratings on here. This whole production simply seems to lack inspiration with little thought given to the final execution of each track. Someone once told me after hearing "Left of Cool" that they hoped the Flecktones weren't trying to go commercial. "Left of Cool" wasn't a bad cd, but with the addition of lyrics, which they clearly do not need (and aren't too good in writing/singing them), seemed like they were heading in a direction I would not appreciate. This is the height of that notion. I just don't know what they were thinking here.

There is plenty of fine music put out by this group, but this is surely not a good representation of that. The only reason why this gets 2 stars is because its hard to give a band, who I love so much, less than that. I really expected a lot more from them here and hope for a better and more listenable project in the future.

Little Words.......2005-06-15

This album is great. All four of the flecktones really show their virtuosity on this album. Especially Bela and Victor. The writing is great and all the special guests really shine. Some places on the album that really stand out are Victor's Bass work on "Puffy" and "Reminiscence," Bela and Bobby McFerrin's collaboration on "Jed Clampett" and "What it Is," Nickle Creek's lightning fast playing on both "Off the Top" tracks and Jerry Douglas's dobro playing is always great. The only qualm I've had with this CD is that there are a number of tracks that seem very strange that probably could have been hacked, reduced the album from a triple to a double disc and made the album much better. The spacy lattitude and longitude tracks could go, "The Fjords of Oslo" sounds like a ridiculous theme and variations on "Heart and Soul" and "The Cave" sounded like Future Man just pushed record and started fooling around with stuff. Overall, its a good album, though you may find yourself to be pushing the skip button on your CD player more often than you would like, wishing you could have payed for two CDs instead of three.

If you can't do it well then don't do it........2005-03-25

Bela Fleck seems to want to be a jack of all trades. I think a great artist can spend a lifetime in one sub genre and still never have the depth of understanding that satisfies him/her. Either way if Bela wants to unite the world of music without any understanding of most of it...well who am I to stop her, all I can do is not buy the album and write a bad review !

P.S: To Dennis who claims that this is the greatest CD ever made. What planet are you from, and what drugs do you take ?

I am embarrassed to admit I didn't see the genius of this at first listen.. but after a while I tossed it in into the CD drive and work and I really sat down with for an hour or so, and (like an epiphany) I realized it's mesmerizing (in a good, beautiful way). I love this CD so much I have given it to 5 friends so they can enjoy the seductive, soulful beauty as much as I. Electric Gypsy. . . I could listen to just that track alone for hours but all are worth a listen. Amazing CD - I wish the whole world would get turned on to it (we all deserve a little beauty in our lives, after all)

At last, GOVINDA (aka Shane O'Madden), has polished up what he does best and combined it with what he loves the most to produce an absolutely stunning, glittering, dazzling, free fall spiraling through a dub haze of exotic and erotic electronica. I own (and love) all of the previous GOVINDA offerings to date, but I must say that this one and 'erotic rhythms' are my favorites so far. Imagine 'erotic rhythms' but with an even more lost, almost desolate place (or lack thereof) out of time / space, coupled with plenty of dubbed out samples of O'Madden's violin, rhythmic chanting, and the like and you get the idea - a smoother, more modern, more polished version of the dub classic ('erotic rhythms'). A must-have if you enjoy ambient, dub, chill, downtempo, or any of the above.

Govinda's Magical Worlds Within.......2005-03-20

Wow....I don't think an album has entranced me this much since the first Enigma album from 1990....no, change that: since 1994's "Pure" by The Golden Palominos....Anyway, I'm a total newbie to the music of Govinda (real name Shane O'Madden). I came across "Worlds Within" while it was playing in a music store recently, and I was instantly hooked on it. This is a *fantastic* album: hypnotic, seductive, sensual, hypnotising, atmospheric....in other words, the kind of music I absolutely go for. The way Govinda weaves dub, electronica, world, pop, and new age into one glorious tapestry of music is just breathtaking. I can't even spotlight a single track for you: "Worlds Within" comes across to me like a single, 53-minute musical opus divided into twelve parts. All I can tell you is that this is magnificently sensual music. Govinda is a brilliantly talented musician, composer & producer, and I definitely plan to check out some more of his work. In the meantime, buy "Worlds Within." Turn out the lights, and enjoy.

As a travel writer, I've been enchanted by the music and spiritual ambience of places outside our normal range of experience in the US. This CD brings back all the mystery of the world's most enigmatic sites, from Kathmandu to Cairo, Spitsbergen to Patagonia, Hanoi to Nuku'alofa, and Jaisalmer to Moorea. It's a treasure.

Incredible CD. Really. If you want to take an international journey without artificial assistance (except your sound system), this album provides the trip. I was given this album several years ago by someone who doesn't like "new age" music. Yet, I would not classify this work in that category. I have only listened to the soundbites, provided by Amazon, to compare this album with Chris' other works. It is not the same. This is one of the best albums I own. When I am upset, cannot sleep or just need to change the subject in my head's jibberish--it's the only thing that works for me. Thanks Chris.

A mystical experience!.......1998-09-04

This cd ranks very highly as one of Chris' best works to date and receives my highest recommendation! The sounds, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing to the mind as well as the soul. Images of ancient temples will come to mind as you sit back and 'feel' the music.

Pretty disappointing considering some of his earlier work, especially his collaborations with Paul Voudouris. I guess it's an attempt at a more ethnic style of new age music, but he has done much better.

Neil Finn's restless creative spirit didn't lounge during Split Enz's and Crowded House's two decades of achievement. In this live recording (culled from five shows at New Zealand's St. James Theatre in April 2001), Finn not only pauses to take stock in his rich career, he often generously shares the spotlight with an impressive array of guest musicians (brother Tim, guitarist Johnny Marr of the Smiths and Electronic, violinist/vocalist Lisa Germano, Radiohead's Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien, and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder) who've come to back him and express a little fandom of their own. South Pacific Paradise.......2006-12-19

This record is just fantastic. Neil Finn is most likely the best songwriter around. Neil Finn and Paul McCartney, that's pretty much it as `Worlds best songwriters' goes, in my opinion. To hear him play with friends and professionals, even family, like he does on this album is a privilege.

Essentially Neil planned to get together with some musicians he admires (Johnny Marr, Eddie Vedder, Lisa Germano a.o.), rehearse in comfortable surroundings in New Zealand, play a few gigs as a band and disband. In addition he brought his brother Tim Finn and his son Liam with his band Betchadupa along for the gig, and that's pretty much it.

What came out of this is just so good, I almost feel like crying, I'm so upset I couldn't be there to witness it. But the good news is of course this CD and the wonderful concert DVD released at the same time.

There are a couple of mild duds (Johnny Marr on his own is a rather pedestrian affair), but all over this is just a sensory festival. Highpoint of the affair, Eddie Vedder and Tim Finn rocking out alongside the kids in Betchadupa to Uncle Tim's 'I See Red', with a proud Neil watching from the side.

An early version of Edible Flowers (later released on Everyone is here) sends shivers down my spine, showing that the Finn Brothers grasp on a great tune and superior lyrics are as strong as ever.

Missing Tracks?!.......2005-02-19

Where is the Acoustic version of Fall At Your Feet found on the DVD?! That is probably the most incredible recording of one of Neil's most popular songs? I was gutted to not find it on this album... a crying shame...

One huge surprise........2004-10-16

It was absolutely worth the price of this CD to find out that my favorite Split Enz song of all time, "Take A Walk," is also quite obviously Eddie Vedder's! His live version here does not eclipse Neil Finn's original, but it's very apparent he's thrilled to be singing it (with Finn on harmony vocal). Who knew Vedder had such excellent taste? I thought he was obsessed with Pete Townshend!

Great after a few listens.......2004-03-28

Upon first listen to this album I was fairly dissapointed. Initially, the vocals on the One All songs seemed weak and I didnt care for the work of Eddie Vedder on several other tracks. However, after a few more listens this album has become a favorite. Neil Finn's voice has an incredible pure resonance live and it shines brighter than any of the other vocalists who are not as strong. Vedder's renditions of Stuff and Nonsense and Parting Ways are surprising gems after a few listens. The Finn standouts are the cover of There is a Light That Never Goes Out (even better than the original), She Will Have Her Way, and Weather With You.

Seven Worlds Collide.......2003-11-29

Neil Finn first broke onto the music scene in the 70's as one of the founding members of Split Enz, one of New Zealand's most successful pop/rock/punk bands, and garnered worldwide attention with minor hits "I Got You" and "I See Red." Split Enz, as their name suggests, eventually split ends and Neil went on to form Crowded House in the 80's. Neil enjoyed more success with Crowded House and the hit singles "Don't Dream It's Over," "Something So Strong," and "Weather With You." Crowded House eventually became a little too cramped as Neil and his brother Tim disbanded the group to focus more on their solo work and brotherly collaborations. Try Whistling This, Neil's first proper solo album, shyed away from the Split Enz and Crowded House material as Finn began to take a darker edge with his songwriting in tunes like "She Will Have Her Way," "Sinner," and "Addicted." Despite much critical success, as is par for the Finn family, Whistling failed to take off commercially in the states. Never one to take a day off, Neil promptly went back to work on crafting One Nil, his sophomore solo release. Once again released to critical acclaim in Europe, Australia, and Asia, American record execs at Sony/Work didn't hear another "Don't Dream It's Over" on there. As the Work label was collapsing and Sony was cleaning it's roster of established acts, Neil went back into the studio to re-work One Nil into One All - partly due to label pressures, partly due to his perfectionistic tendencies. The traditional record label stories follow leaving Neil with a refurbished version of an album which was already fine to begin with, but without a company to release it in the States. In steps Nettwerk, a Canadian-based artist-friendly label that was for all intensive purposes founded on the international success of Sarah McLachlan, to release One All. Always the showman, Neil continued to tour throughout all this to sold-out audiences across the world culminating in 7 Worlds Collide, an experiment as he says to form a band of his friends and some of the greatest musicians today, play a week of shows, and disband before things start going bad.

Neil's constant touring resulted in the all-star 7 Worlds Collide shows, recorded in Neil's native New Zealand. From the One Nil/One All sessions, Germano and Steinberg return, this time accompanied with Radiohead's Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway, the Smiths' Johnny Marr, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, brother Tim Finn, and son Liam Finn and his popular Kiwi rock band, Betchadupa. Highlights include an acoustic version of Crowded House's "Fall At Your Feet" and "Don't Dream It's Over." Eddie Vedder and Betchadupa shine on the Split Enz classic, "I See Red," taking it into new territory. Lisa Germano's bewitching "Paper Doll" and "Cry Wolf" would give anyone goosebumps while Neil does a fine job with the Smiths' classic "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." Try Whistling This's "Loose Tongue" has one of the most memorable bass lines this author has ever heard, and the live rendtion of "She Will Have Her Way" brings out the fun and energy inherent in the original. Guiding us through all this is Neil's traditional Kiwi charm and wit which is unmatched by any live performer today. If Neil Finn considered 7 Worlds Collide an experiment, and the cd/dvd of the shows his published results, someone fund this sonic scientist again.

A wonderful album!.......2004-10-06

This is an essential new age album that you should not pass up. This was Patrick O'hearns best album before his new album surpassed it. This is probably Patricks most space oriented of his electronic albums to date. It's the dark electronic, rainy music that makes me love this album. Every song on here is a breakthrough for this extremely talented musician. Some songs I remember hearing when I was very young.
Rainmaker is a very haunting song with an intense misty atmosphere with some ceramic percussion. Sky Juice is a breathtaking song with very electronic synths and some jet sound effects with some thumping beats and a cool bass. However that is nothing like the next one. Cape Perpetual is beyond any word I can describe about this song. It's a very spooky track. It starts of with some strange breezy wind instruments and some thundering sounds in the distance. At about 30 seconds there are some synthesizer hums that fade in. The sound of the synth humming almost scared me at first listening. It then becomes a dark very space oriented song with ceramic percussion and thundering jet sound effects. I could close my eyes listening to this song and imagine myself traveling on the Orient Express through oriental space. This song alone makes this album a five star. Gentle Was The Night is a very beautiful song with just mostly synths. This is a great song. Fire Ritual is a very pop oriented song and some vocal doodling here and there. This is probably the brightest song on here. 87 Dreams Of A Lifetime lives up to the title. This is a very stunning and could rank as one of his best 80s tracks ever. It starts with just some ambient synths and the synths get louder and at about a minute into the song the real music begins. This is a haunting song with a catchy rhythm and a space jazzy stmosphere. This is my second favorite off this album. Dimension D is a very space oriented song with some haunting sound effects and a very dark ambient atmosphere. Forever The Optimistic is a pop oriented song with great electronic bass, a great hook and some synth tinklings throughout the song. I almost cryed when I first heard this song and today I consider this song a new age classic. Journey To Yoroba is another haunting song. It has lots of ceramic percussion and ambient synths. I love the drum loop to this song. The closing title track is great with more great synths and cool drums.

All in all I rank this album as one Mr. O'Hearns strongest masterpieces to date.

It's hard to really say how much I love this album because it really stimulates imagination in a way that none of his other albums can.

In fact this album for a time is almost like the soundtrack my high school years because it reflects lonely I feel sometimes. In fact I strongly recommend this album to all who love music to listen to while thinking. It's very intelligent music that should be enjoyed by all generations.

Truly exceptional.......2001-12-09

Neil Finn is one of New Zealand's most talented singer/songwriters. This CD is produced from his live show's 'Neil Finn and Friends' in Auckland earlier this year. Neil's friends include: his brother Tim (another exceptional singer/songwriter); Eddie Vedder; Lisa Germano; Johnny Marr; Sebastian Steinberg and others. Listening to the CD, and being at the concert, made you think that these guys had been playing together for years. A slick professional performance from the whole group. It seemed like second nature to them, like they just belong together.

'I See Red' has been a favourite of mine since it first came out, and having Eddie Vedder singing it adds another powerful dimension to the song. Particular favourites on the CD include I See Red, Weather With You, Wherever You Are, Don't Dream It's Over and She Will Have Her Way.

Like the 'Together In Concert' CD from the New Zealand wide concerts of Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn and Bic Runga, the 7 Worlds Collide is there to bring back wonderful memories for those of us that were fortunate enough to attend, and bring the enjoyment of Neil Finn's music to those that couldn't.

Listen and enjoy the CD. You won't regret it - it's truly exceptional.

Modern classical guitar doesn't get much better than this.......2007-07-10

Dusan Bogdanovic's recordings are among my most cherished recordings in a large guitar music collection. Dusan's music is exotic and complex but always melodic as he weaves ethnic, jazz and classical influences into beautiful amalgams. This particular recording is his first and was released in 1990, not 1999 as Amazon incorrectly states. The 62 minute CD has 21 tracks ranging in length from 33 seconds to almost 7 minutes. Every single piece was composed by Dusan and every piece is captivating and unlike anything that I've ever heard before. Solo guitar played fingerstyle on a nylon string guitar by one of the greatest modern composers in the classical guitar world.
