Duplicate If You Must--This CD Is for Every Fan of Milhaud.......2005-12-23
One thing that the current recording has going for it is just about the best sound that's ever been accorded these popular works. Maybe it's the venue, the Auditorium du Noveau Siecle in Lille, or maybe it's Mike Clements, one of today's finest sound engineers. Maybe it's a special kind of synergy. Anyhow, this is a fabulous-sounding disc.
Finally, there is "L'homme et son desir." I don't know whether to call this a poor-man's "Les Noces" (Stravinsky) or a rich-man's "Ballet Mechanique" (Antheil), but whatever, it is one of Milhaud's most unusual and beguiling creations, replete with a weird vocalise for four soloists and huge percussion section featuring a whip and a police whistle! The piece is available in what might be a considered a definitive performance by the composer himself, except this one from Casadesus is every bit as good, if not a little livelier, and of course it is in up-to-the-minute sound. So as I say, even if you'll be getting your third (or fourth) version of "La Creation du monde," don't miss this very special CD.
A Varied Collection of Modern French Classical Music.......2005-10-05
Composer Darius Milhaud's music is not always easy to describe. He is influenced by the legacy of classical composers from his native France which forms the basic framework of his music. He was also influenced by trends in classical music by other composers who were his contemporaries as well as by the jazz movement. Some of his music also has a Latin/Brazilian feel to it which means that you're never quite sure oaf what you'll hear when it comes to Milhaud's music but one thing is certain, it may be a bit challenging but it will be enjoyable.
This disc from Naxos contains four pieces from the Milhaud catalogue. The first piece is "La Creation du Monde" which the liner notes states is Milhaud's best known work though I would believe that at least to American audiences, the familiar Brazilian strains of "Le Boeuf sur le Toit" would have that distinction. "La Creation" is a combination of French classical and jazz and was originally a ballet. "Le Boeuf" has a Brazilian and jazz feel to it and was originally written as a background piece for a silent film. "Suite Provencale" would be the most traditional work of the set and his "L'Homme et son Desir" would for orchestra and wordless voices would be his most experimental.
The Orchestre National de Lille seems at home with Milhaud's music. They accept the challenges posed by pieces such as "La Creation" and "L'Homme,' play "Suite Provencale" in a robust manner and have fun with "La Boeuf." Conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus seems to not gusty be familiar with the scores but as respect for the composer as well as his interpretations show. Naxos also has to be credited for providing a disc of not so familiar music so that listeners can get to know the music of an important 20th century composer.

If you're looking to label this music as one sort or another--classical, jazz, bluegrass--you're bound to get into trouble. The two Quartets at work here--the Turtle Island String Quartet and the Ying Quartet--are innovators, blending absolutely classical training with a love of experimentation, improvisation, and an ear for unusual textures. The CD begins with a cool, swinging, true jazz classic ("Yearnin'") for the full octet and ends with a version of John Lennon's "Because" which captures the piece's melancholy in just the right manner. Along the way, an original work by the Turtle Island cellist, "Julie-O," discovers the darker and more virtuosic reaches of the pair of cellos. Darius Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde," a 1923 piece that explored the combination of European classical music and jazz, gets a new arrangement, and another original piece, "Variations on an Unoriginal Theme," pits one quartet against the other in a friendly competition that touches on R&B and Samba. This is a unique CD--entertaining and original. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

This CD is the long-awaited follow-up to jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis's 1986 debut, Romances for Saxophone with the English Chamber conducted by Andrew Litton. Since that project, Marsalis has led his own jazz combos and worked with The Grateful Dead and Sting. On this recording, Marsalis's superb soprano and alto sax are buoyed by the wonderful, conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble that was featured on Herbie Hancock's Gershwin's World. Marsalis's clear sound and mature phrasing imbue French classics like Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte," Debussy's ragtime-rhythmed "Golliwogg's Cake-Walk," and Fauré's "Pie Jesu" with verve and vitality. Marsalis navigates the New World syncopations of Darius Milhaud's "Saudades do Brasil" with the same ease he displays on the composer's jazz-inspired ballet, "La création du monde." On Jacques Ibert's showcase for the alto saxophone, "Concertino da camera," Marsalis's negotiation of its florid melody and his swing-spiced cadenza show that the innovations of jazz improvisation have enriched and extended the classical tradition. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:
Some Interesting Arrangements of Early 20th Century French Music.......2007-02-04
CREATION is a collection of early twentieth century works arranged for saxophone and orchestra. Marsalis is joined by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for arrangements that are original yet also respect the intention of the composers. Overall CREATION is a great relaxation disc, with the exception of some of the Milhaud pieces (the arrangement of LA CREATION DU MONDE is perhaps the one piece that makes this collection of what could be termed background music somewhat startling). Our local classical music radio station often plays some of the pieces from this collection and calls the pieces "tracks to relax." The selections are varied from Debussy, Satie, Ravel and Faure to the more experimental sounds of Darius Milhaud. The choice of selections shows the variety of the music and in many ways shows that the line between classical and jazz in the twentieth century is not always as fixed as it seems.
This collection provides great musical entertainment and offers some interesting interpretations of great music that's certain to be enjoyed by many.
B. Marsalis delights, but does not surprise.......2005-08-16
Then I realize this is all BS. Just listen to one of the best instumentalists playing very nice tunes. It is not his fault if it is so smooth, and clean. Just great.
The Disc Title Says it All.......2004-10-14
Branford's playing is a lot of things here, studied, practiced, prepared, thorough, and strong. It could have been more sensitive and collaborative. This is not something that necessarily need be laid at his door; it could be a "group" thing as much as anything. Other reviewers have noted that ensemble players often have difficulty working within an orchestra setting, and that the presence of a conductor could have kept things in check.
But that was not the point of this effort. If Orpheus and Branford had wanted a conductor they would have hired one. So one must use a more nuanced and blended yardstick to measure this . The compositions themselves clearly have a strong jazz influence, so the conceptual approach of the players is not only entirely appropriate but interesting. And that's what in the end separates jazz music from classical music. You may not like what people play or the way they play it, but at least it's not the same old stale sh-t. Branford's history of exploring a variety of musical stylings comes in well here; I appreciate his playfulness and almost joyful approach to some of these pieces. That's the way I think they ought to be played.
Highly Recommended.
Fairly lackluster, but interesting to hear.......2001-12-08
However, he runs into the same problems many jazz musicians have when trying to "cross over" into classical: too little emphasis on tone quality, rough articulation, trouble blending with the strings, and in some cases, sloppy ensemble technique.
Perhaps this latter problem has more to do with the lack of a conductor than a lack of skill.
Marsalis plays quite respectably on the Ibert. He doesn't take the ossia altissimo passages, but many "classical" artists don't either, so I can't fault him for that.
The "Scaramouche" comes off the best of all the traditional recital pieces on this disc. Marsalis caputures the fleeting playfulness of the first movement, and his technique is flawless here.
His tone is unacceptably bright and raucous in the "Creation du Monde," however. His playing in that piece is beyond the range of any interpretation I've ever heard. Much of this has to do with the placement of the microphones and the production of the recording as well.
I would have preferred that the disc include fewer transcriptions, but Marsalis seems to enjoy recording transcriptions instead of the more serious works for classical saxophone. It would be interesting to hear him play some of the heavier repertoire: the Glazonov concerto, the Dubois Concerto, the Dahl concerto, etc.
Shivers down my spine.......2001-08-03
I thought it would be wonderful background as I sat working at my computer -- it's so incredible it's distracting. Savor this.

Crisp, Lively Performances of Crowd-Pleasing Favorites.......2004-01-28
The one rarity - all 4 minutes & 33 seconds of it! - is the "Chamber Fox Trot" by the great Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974). This is his orchestration of a 2-piano piece he wrote in the 1920s in his capacity as music director for a marionette theater in Paris, and it's a charmer, very much in the semi-satirical vein of Ravel's "L'Enfant et les Sortileges."

Leonard Bernstein was the great conductor of "classical jazz" music, including George Gershwin and much of his own. That makes him an ideal interpreter of Darius Milhaud's two ballets, one an evocation of Harlem nightclubs of the 1920s, the other a picture of Brazilian street music during Carnival season in Rio. The French musicians respond to his committed leadership with complete enthusiasm, and for years this disc has stood as the essential collection of Milhaud ballet music. "Saudades do Brasil" is a little suite of piano pieces, some of which were later orchestrated by the composer, and the selection performed here make a perfect encore. --David Hurwitz

"The Creation of the World" is one of the first (and best) classical- jazz fusion pieces. The ballet was composed as a direct result of the composer's experience of Harlem nightclubs in the early years of this century, and for sheer audacity and authenticity, it has never really been surpassed, not even by composers like George Gerswhin. "Le Boeuf sur le Toit" (The Cow on the Roof), on the other hand, is a saucy evocation of the sites and sounds of Rio during Carnival season. It has become one of this very prolific composer's most popular pieces. The Harp Concerto is, as the title indicates, a purely abstract piece with a deeply felt slow movement and a zippy finale. These performances are crisp and alert. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
Suave but lackadaisical readings of saucy pieces.......2006-06-03
Devoted as Nagano has been to the Gallic cause, he misfires in both works. "La Creation" is far too careful, and not nearly jazzy enough. "Boeuf" starts off in the right lively vein, but we quickly leave Rio behind and find ourselves in a stuffy ocncert hall. The charming but negligible Harp Concerto also gets a sweet, rather bland reading, but that's in the nature of the piece. (Anyone seeking a lively Boeuf sur le Toit should look to violinist Arnaud Capucon's quirky re-mix with rising conductor Daniel Harding.)
