Product Description

The music of Tingstad and Rumbel speaks to the heart and creates deep feelings of peace. Understated, yet powerful, the artists and the music encourage an appreciation for community and stewardship.

In a world filled with constant "noise," moments where we can leave stress at the door and be completely carried away into imagination and relaxation, are limited. Tingstad and Rumbel's music brings this much needed serenity to the listener.

Music has been called a mysterious power due to its remarkable ability to change moods, attitudes and even blood pressure! Over the course of their career, Tingstad and Rumbel have been flattered and humbled time and again when their music has been used for such important moments as: births, weddings, illnesses, deaths and other significant passages. Reluctant to suggest that their music is healing, it does seem however to encourage a sense of wellness and comfort.

This project was designed to focus on slower tempos which tend to support needed moments for rest, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation. The title was inspired by a phrase that both their mothers would say - we would love a moment's peace.

5 out of 5 stars I love 60s/70s music but I love these sounds in a different way.......2007-07-05

I discovered Narada around 1990 or earlier. Decade was one of my favorites and strangely, the songs I liked the best were always Tingstad and Rumbel. There's something inspiring, lovely and unusual about their two sounds together. So, I started buying their records too. Sometimes they play with David Lantz, a third sound which if played with Tingstad and Rumbel is like another dimension. A great thing about most of Narada's music is that it doesn't disturb you if you are studying or writing like a lot of classical music, it inspires you to work better, at least that is my experience.

5 out of 5 stars Smoothe Music.......2006-07-10

This is one of my favorite albums. The music is, in my opinion, excellently chosen. Some compilation CDs have awkward transitions between artists. On this album, the songs are arranged in a very pleasing order. You can listen and appreciate the different styles of the artists without feeling like you are getting pulled in different directions. The best way I can describe it is to write that it is like reading an excellently chosen book of short stories.

This album is fabulous for artistic inspiration. It is beautiful without being imposing. As a teacher of English, I often look for music that will inspire my students to write without distracting them. For the past four years, this CD has been one that my students have enjoyed listening to while they work.

3 out of 5 stars Half good, half sleepers.......2004-03-02

If anything, this CD brings you up to date with who's who in the acoustic fingerstyle scene. I love the fingerstyle technique, but didn't know much about the current talent. Now I see these names all of the time in guitar magazines, and I actually can associate music with the face. So on an informative level, this CD does the job well.

However, the buffet factor did affect my opinion of the overall music: more songs means more filler. While I find half of the collection to be great, I felt pretty underwhelmed by the rest of it. There are no excruciatingly bad moments to speak of. The low points are just plain boring. And almost everyone here is trying their absolute best to ape the Michael Hedges approach. A find that admirable since I like Michael Hedges, but it's tiring all the same.

My favorite musicians here are probably Don Ross, Pat Kirtley, and possibly D.R. Auten. Ross is very much a disciple of Hedges, but his music remains compositionally interesting like his source. Both songs show off a good melody alongside his baffling technique. It really does sound like he has three hands. Pat Kirtley has a more subtle approach to the guitar. His Kentucky-Americana roots make for two very warm, laid-back tunes. He may not be flashy, but he has style. I like D.R. Auten's loose-jazz composition "Angela." That's definitely a high point on the CD for me as well.

When I saw Muriel Anderson perform, my jaw might have hit the floor. I can't remember. But she was completely out of this world. And I almost didn't go to see her play because the two songs she contributed to this CD put me to sleep. To B Or Not To B sounds identical to the Chet Atkins performance, and It Never Gets Easier is just as dry. Without a doubt I recommend you catch her live. As far as her recordings go, I have yet to hear something killer.

All of the other guitarists just sound like one another. While their technique is impressive and the music is pleasant, it's all too much of the same. Hopefully these other artists will grow and develop as their careers progress.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic!!!.......2003-11-30

A friend of mine bought this album a while ago and played it for me. I am a fan of Leo Kottke and so thought he was the ultimate in fingerstyle. I soon realized that he has competitors. This album is one of the finest I have encountered and will long be one of my favorites. It has inspired me to become more proficient at the guitar. Check out the tracks, To B or Not To B, Crow, Lunar Eclipse, The First Ride. The rest of the album is none-the-less engaging. Highly Recommended!!! Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Enjoyable Acoustic Entertainment.......2003-02-11

I heard this CD being played as background music to my daughter's guitar recital...as the audience was arriving for the concert. It captivated my wife and I to the point that I searched everywhere I could to obtain a copy. The music instructor of the night could not recall which CD he utilized (he apparently has quite a variety in his collection). I purchased six acoustic CDs in search of this one. AM I GLAD I FINALLY FOUND THIS ONE AT AMAZON.com! What a great mix of relaxing and diverse acoustic tunes. I am a big "Acoustic Alchemy" band fan, but this is my all-time favorite CD. And I really appreciate Amazon.com's extra effort in their quality packaging of these products. I haven't had a CD or DVD breakage yet! And the time frame from ordering to arrival is very impressive.

5 out of 5 stars a true sampling of talent and style.......2002-04-16

I have a love for guitar music of all kinds. Be it jazz, rock, blues, acoustic or other. But more and more I find myself listening to lots of acoustic guitar, the warm tones evoke moods and emotions like few other instruments can. In the hands of these accomplished artists, the playing is raised to new heights. This is a great CD for driving, for quiet nights home alone, or with a special someone. Highly recommended for those who are just beginning to explore the genre as well as those who already enjoy it.

A splendid blend of technique, stealth melodies, and frothy imagination, Guitar Fingerstyle 2 delightfully cherry-picks selections from 15 individual recordings, 10 from outside the Narada catalog. Executive producers Artie Traum (who opens the disc with a breezy, blue-tinged duet with Laurence Juber) and Michael Sullivan top-load this engaging package with a series of clever, note-dense productions that alternately charm and bedazzle listeners, smartly articulating the earthy appeal of the finger-style craft. Particularly noteworthy: "Saturn" from Dean Magraw, a fairly rollicking duet with mandolinist Peter Ostroushko (Prairie Home Companion), and "Old Growth" from Stephen Bennett, a bluesy, bottlenecked mini-symphony of whimsy on harp guitar. The disc loses some steam during the second half, favoring a more laid-back approach, yet overall its rewards are ample for both casual listeners and demanding finger-style devotees. --Terry Wood

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great.........2002-08-22

This is a good standard issue fingerstyle cd. While it won't blow you away, it makes for some good background stuff. Check out Master of Acoustic Guitar and Acoustic Heart for great guitar work.

5 out of 5 stars On par with first.......2001-12-08

Although a little different, this edition of Guitar Fingerstyle is just as good as its predecessor. From blistering jazz arpeggios to haunting neoclassic melodies to good ole down-home pickin' and grinnin' (and everything in between) this album has it all! The first time I tracked through it, I remarked that it had more of a "background music" feel than the first. But whether you sit and savor every note or whether you have it playing in the background while you go about your daily chores, this album will not disappoint. All of the artists are true virtuosoes, and the album is chock full of excellent compositions. This album would be a delight to anyone who enjoys gooood guitar music. Three of my favorite tracks are #7, #9 and #15.

4 out of 5 stars Fingerstyle Artists Deliver Earthy Warmth.......2001-06-27

What a relief from the monotonous drum-machine radio snore!

I had been searching for something to jolt me back into my creative self, to reawaken my zest for life: Lucky for me, this album is ALIVE.

Upon first listening to this compilation of acoustic guitar music performed by various artists, I was immediately awed by the stark, yet lush tonal quality that a single musician could summon from a mere six strings. Song after song, I could hear all the subtle nuances of fingers sliding across fret boards, sense the musicians' feelings - things I haven't been getting from "pop rock central" FM quite so much.

But I haven't even mentioned the songs! I don't own the album (yet), but had the privilege of hearing it recently. There are easily 12-15 tunes, all performed by solo or perhaps duo guitarists, with styles ranging from classic-like ballads to blues and some with an edgier jazz or Spanish flavor. This CD is neat because it doesn't try to run the whole gamut of guitar effects, and never strays much from an easier-listening tone.

I found myself relaxed by the beautiful sound while also analyzing the complex tonal passages. This is not simple chord strumming; how the artists manage to weave bass, chord and melody lines so smoothly I may never know.

What I do know is that this album has soul worthy of a permanent collection. I can imagine this CD nestled among the likes of Sarah Brightman (Time to Say Goodbye), Enya, and Sarah McLachlan (Surfacing), or jazz like my Yellowjackets CD circa 1993. Doesn't SOUND so much like any of these, but provides the same solid musicianship, and would certainly keep me revved behind the wheel of my car or computer at work.

Historically, the harp was the primary instrument of Irish traditional music. So when this kind of music is played on a guitar it is no surprise that it often sounds something like a harp. The seven outstanding American, French, and English players on this disc have been attracted to the lilting or mournful melodies of Ireland and their techniques have benefited from knowledge of bluegrass, jazz, blues, and rock. But the Irish flavor is the main attraction, from "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms" on the first cut, through less familiar material, to a wonderful "Danny Boy" near the end. The close-up recording has a striking presence, and the sound is very mellow, partly because of special, lower tunings (usually D-A-D-G-A-D). --Joe McLellan

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Celtic Collection.......2004-12-03

What a wonderful album! Classical examples of Celtic guitar work played by some of the most notable performers at work. People like Martin Simpson, Duck Baker, Pierre Bensusan, etc., etc., etc. This style of music, born with the harp players of the Celtic musicians of the British Isles and Europe stands unshakably at the center of North American non-native folk music. So deeply rooted that we all, whatever our cultural background, have felt its influence in places that the itinerant musicians who brought it here never would have expected it to go.

Listening to this album, with its careful sonics is like a master lesson in the genre (there actually is a book, and a DVD as well, available for those who play as well as listen). It's a rare opportunity to compare approaches. From the subtle differences between Martin and Baughman (the latter hews a line closer to the original harp work) to the flashier, yet drier, playing of Bensusan this is an album of eye-openers.

I wish I had the time to play as well as these musicians, or had the repertoire this album represents. Having an album like this handy to ask as inspiration helps, though. Whether you are an old fan looking for something new to hear or a newcomer wondering what all the fuss is about this album represents an excellent bargain. Much recommended.

This is a very special album, next to a very few others in my collection (Kind of Blue, Birds of Fire are in this category)that transcend genre or date, simply gorgeous music. As a prescription for the stress and cynicism inherent in 21st-century life, listen quietly to this album and be healed - it worked for me! Over and over again! This music is a blessing, and it should be much more widely heard. Chapdelaine's writing and playing are beyond compare, check it out -

      Album Description

The title track of "Where Blue Meets Blue" celebrates a reunion with a long lost cousin; "Buffalo" and "The King" feature Calhoun's trademark manic/mystical lyric style. "Portrait of a Girl and Her Parents" (with David Chickering on cello) explores a girls' determination to survive as a free spirit. Gerry O'Neill plays fiddle and Kat Eggleston harmonizes on "Vancouver"; Calhoun covers John Prine's "Hello In There" and Kate MacLeod's "Wild Birds". MacLeod sings and plays fiddle on "Baby-O". "Peach Song and "River Song" feature non-human points of view; "Garage", about the exhaustion and ambivalence of daily life, presents a human one. Andrew Bird plays violin on the catchy "Politics". Working with new musical ideas, several songs feature melodic shifts into related modes within the songs' keys.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-06-02

This is one of my favorite CDs by Calhoun. I don't know how to describe so you should just listen to a few samples. It falls somewhere between folk, blues, and some hints of good ol' rock-n-roll. It seems he is finally starting to get a little recognition and it's well deserved. He has an outstanding voice and a unique gift for telling life's stories through music.

5 out of 5 stars True folk music.......2003-04-07

Calhoun's powerful voice envelops you from the first song on. He sings about little things, people with unnoticed lives, or moments from his past. It's amazing how he transforms these things into songs that will move you tears or laugh out loud. I quite like this CD and it motivated me enough to buy everything I could find by him. The best (in my opinion) is "Tiger Tattoo" which I bought from the label: Waterbug Records.

      5 out of 5 stars A great find!.......2003-02-05

I just discoverd Andrew when I heard him play at a local folk festival. Wow what a find! Man, the guy has a great voice and he is an amazing mix of folk singer and story teller. Anyone who like Dylan or Prine will dig Calhoun. I have to agree with the reviewer who says see him live. His voice just takes over a room. The man has a gift.

5 out of 5 stars How has Andrew Calhoun evaded you for so long?.......2002-08-31

How is it possible that an artist like Andrew Calhoun floats around unnoticed in the realm of singer/songerwriters? He is a rare artist that combines a classical guitar sound, poems and a unique baritone vocal for a sound so original and yet so welcoming and honest, you feel like you are coming home. If you're like me and grew up listening to the rock and pop music of the eighties and nineties, you probably starting tuning out the lyrics and just bobbed your head up and down, settling happily for a catchy tune. You may have shared my experience of discovering I've been singing along to a catchy song and suddenly realized it's not something I want to be saying much less singing at the top of my lungs out my car window. Anyway, I think you get the picture.

Andrew Calhoun refuses to join the ranks of singer/songwriters that lead us all in the what I like to term the "jingle-trance" of modern rock/pop music and as a result, you probably have never heard him. When I heard this CD, I found myself actually studying and digesting the words and digging out the lyrics sheet.

A few highlights of the CD are:

"Roads in Disrepair" a song which creates the story of a town, pride and lost love. With the passing of seasons, time slowly makes love harder to rekindle until it is too late.

"Buffalo" a modern ballad connecting family generations and tradition.

"The Peach Song" an anthem about being on the verge of discovery, self or otherwise, through the eyes of a peach.

This is a CD you will have to listen to a few times to catch all the symbolism and to fully apprecitate the artistry. A Guarunteed regular for your sound system.

If you ever get the chance to see Andrew live, it is worth your time.

        Album Description

"When Home Is Far Away" takes the listener on an instrumental journey through cities and seasons. With the guitar as his voice, Leong's debut album is filled with gentle tunes reflecting on winter in New York, beaches in Hawaii, and thinking about the distant sights and smells of the islands. Influenced by ki ho`alu (Hawaiian slack key), classical guitar, and fingerstyle, "When Home Is Far Away" touches several tunings and styles, while consistently staying true to the relaxing nature of Hawaii.

5 out of 5 stars The feel of Aloha..........2007-06-20

This aptly tightled and carefully crafted album welcomes you in, and welcomes you back for every listening with true Aloha. I'm lucky enough to number some of Hawaii's legendary guitarists as good friends - but this album is unique.

It rightly prioritizes guitar pyrotechnics (yes, even slack key has its technicians) for lush and lovely melodies that blend Hawaii and the West, in a deeply emotional but spare technique that accentuates rather than dulls the gorgeous simplicity.

A landmark album that may mark a vibrant new era in an increasingly cluttered slack key pantheon. (Are the traditionalists listening?) It stands the deepest scrutiny but, more importantly, gives a sense of enchantment and freshness that is so often missing in today's musical offerings.

Hats off to Darin for a spectacular debut.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, evocative, peaceful, spiritual.......2006-02-24

Darin has done us all a great favor in sharing his music with us. He is masterful with the guitar and his spirit comes out in the music. The result is an album that is relaxing, soothing, yet energizing...creates pictures in my mind of happy places, happy thoughts...so hard to explain. I just don't think I could ever get tired of this one. "Sunshine" has the happiest sound; "Goodnight" is a beautiful melody to end the day. My Mom was in the hospital and I brought the album to her to listen to and she absolutely LOVED it--it made her feel better and be able to imagine she was somewhere else. I can't recommend it enough. Truly, this will not disappoint. Listen at the end of a stressful day- light a candle, relax, and just breathe.

        5 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2005-08-26

I must admit I listened to the first track and fell in love with it. I am a dedicated listener of guitar players Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and eric johnson. Darren has done a great job playing something that anyone would listen to. Sometimes words get in the way, and just listening to calming music allows you to free your mind, relax, and center yourself. Darren is a way to obtain that wonderful center again. Listen and you will not be disapointed.
