Introspective music that makes you think.......2003-12-19
Whoever has read Henry Charriere's best selling book- Papilon will sure love this soundtrack. The tracks are simple at the same time provocative and brings to life the pain and sufferings endured by Henry in the french penal settlements. The music can become at times very dark and sullen, that might make more sense in the movie. But the soundtrack does make a standalone statement and Jerry goldsmith proves that he is the king of orchestra and melody. In summary, this soundtrack will give you a totally new listening experience that will force you to think inwards and ponder about the very meaning of human existence. Advice: if you want to add a unique and a rare piece of music to your collection..then go for it.

Expecting More- Getting Less.......2006-03-16
The sound quality is excellent. The choice in music is disappointing. I can name FOUR Horner movie scores or background music that is breath-taking enough that they should have merited inclusion (but alas were not recorded here).
I don't know the dates when these music pieces were released, but it could have been within a couple of years apart. Why? Because this collection has a few tracks that sound VERY SIMILAR. Hence, this CD does NOT fully explore the extent of this great composer's talent.
nice sampler of Horner's work.......2005-08-15
I had most of these tracks on other CDs, but this is a good sampler of Mr. Horners career on a single CD. There are some tracks which are from Original soundtracks in the Varese back catalogue, but most of hte tracks are re-recorded by the Royal Sottish National and Seattle Symphony Orchestras conducted by Cliff Eidelman, Joel McNeeley and John Debney. Also check out Heart of the Ocean (Sonic Images) and Titanic: Essential James Horner Collection (Silva America) for other overviews on Mr. Horner's career.
James Horner as Best Movie Composer.......2000-02-05
To say that James Horner is the most talented soundtrack composer would be an understatement. To my count he has written more than 10 scores. The score for Titanic is as exciting as it is relaxing. This soundtrack is so well made, that I bought the second one! Like the movie, each peice on the soundtrack builds up to the climax. If I had it in front of me, I would be sure to give specific examples, but unfortunetly, I don't. However, I will say that the peice, Rose, which I believe is #4, captures the true meanig of this outstanding movie, and therefore proves how well a composer James Horner has proven to be.
James Horner and John Williams are the best!!.......1999-04-08
At one time I belived the one and only great modern day film composer was John Williams, this album proved me wrong. James Horner, to me is still not as good as John Williams, but dangerously close. Horner in this album has basically summed up sum of his gratest songs ever written. The greatest song in this album is either Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn End Titles, the Courage under Fire Theme, or Apollo 13 (The Launch). Some other honorable mentions include Aliens (Futile Escape), Titanic(Southampton,Rose , Take Her to Sea Mr. Murdoch, and Braveheart's End Credits, and Cocoon: The Return (Returning Home). Mr. Horner has done a fabulous job in expressing emotion almost as good as John Wiliiams. These 13 collabarations dsisplay emotions such as hope, fright, compassion, and courage. This albums only problem's were the fact it left out the music of some other of Horner's best work(Land Before Time, Glory, and An American Tale). The album ignored Horner's "Rock" titles which include Red Heat, Commando, and Gorky Park. This has to be one of the must buy's of the year. Two Very Honest Thumbs Up For James Horner and Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Chorus.
James Horner joins John Williams as the 2 greatest composers.......1999-04-07
I have thought John Williams was the number one film composer, but now I think he has met his match (Williams is still number 1). James Horner can display different emotions in all of his music. From the martial tone of Courage Under Fire (one of my favorites) to the mystical feeling of Casper and Cocoon: The Return. There is heart pounding Futile Chase from Aliens, and of course the heart wrenching melodies of Titanic. Braveheart gives you the tone of Scottish (the bagpipes, you can't miss them) victory. Both Brainstorm and Once Around, to me, give the feeling of hope. How do you forget the feeling of sucess in Apollo 13 or the intergalactic victory in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. This is the perfect album if you want to hear just the great songs. Horner brings out the true emotion in films just the same way that John Williams does. The only change I would make is to add a couple songs from Land Before Time in this album. Those songs would put this album to a 5. Two Thumbs Up!

Give A Listen.......2005-11-14
I'm coming to like Wayne Gratz more and more as time goes by. This album has occupied the top position on my iPod for almost a month now, and it refuses to cloy or bore. There is something solid and charming about the melodies and Gratz's performance that keeps them remarkably free, one play after another.
The is some similarity between Wayne Gratz and Paul Cardall. Much of it is the evenness of composition and performance that makes it difficult to single out one cut as a favorite. But I find myself most interested in pieces like the title song (A Gift From the Sea), Steps in the Sand, and ships which bring in other instruments. The instrumental contrast builds the depth of the work and makes it even more enjoyable.
If you like New Age acoustic instrumental work (or soft jazz, or fusion, or whatever you call it) listen here. Gratz has a dozen or so albums behind him, some out of print and some still available. Most are still available from the musician, and all are worth hunting down.
soothing in a magical way.......2000-10-15
I have nearly all of Wayne's CD's, and this is his finest moment. Without delving into each track, let me say that all the selections on this simply roll off the CD. The thing that sets this apart from so many 'new age' CDs is that Wayne's melodies are memorable, carefully crafted gems. He effectively evokes the feeling in you that he is trying to with his music. He stands well up to his contemporaries, however has not (for some odd reason) 'risen' to the popularity heights of Lanz, Brickman or Yanni - a shame, as he is equally as talented if not more.
This CD takes you places you really want to go - I could almost feel a bit of sand in my sneakers after a few listens. After releasing some non-originals in the latter 90's, this CD is a true return to form from one of the best pianists out there. He effectively strikes a blend of smooth melodies and great songwriting into one - this is just too much for the elevator, however is not one of those 'finger gymnastic, neo-classical' CD's either.
For those new to Gratz, this is a great start. Then try his other earlier classics like 'Panorama' and 'Reminiscence' - and you'll be hooked!
Calming and comforting.......1999-12-04
I bought this CD after hearing it at a friend's house. My children (ages 5 and 9) would ask me to put it on when they wanted to concentrate or have "quiet time". It is a very calming and relaxing CD. It won't put anyone to sleep, but it will make you feel focused. I teach Kindergarten and always play music which helps my children to attend to lessons. I have ordered an additional copy of this CD for my classroom. I'm confident that my school children will love the soothing effects of this music as did my own kids.

Beautiful Music..........2004-10-30
I moved to Champaign a few months ago and came across Amasong through a friend. This choir is AMAZING! I bought Amai over the summer and was stunned by their sound. Though most of the members are not "professional" musicians, they have an incredibly professional sound! I was so blown away that I went out and auditioned for the chorus and began singing with them! This is a must have for anyone who enjoys beautiful choral music!
Beautiful songs, beautifully sung.......2003-01-04
This album has a wonderful variety of songs in many styles and languages, sung by a chorus with a very professional sound, although they are mostly non-professional singers. Although Amasong is a lesbian/feminist chorus, you don't have to fall into either of those groups to enjoy it. Kudos to their extraordinary founder/conductor, Kristina Boerger, for her wonderful choral arrangements as well as great leadership of her group.
