perfect score for a perfect movie.......2007-02-19
The "Third Man Theme" (also known as the "Harry Lime Theme") is alternately brittle, jaunty, bittersweet, romantic, wry, and even sardonic piece of music--which fits the mood of the story and the film perfectly -- that, once heard, can't be forgotten.
The "Third Man Theme" turned Anton Karas into a wealthy man after 28 years of toiling in obscurity an relative poverty in Vienna.
One night, Carol Reed was passing by a wine tavern where growers offer their own wines for sale directly, and heard Anton Karas's playing in the background. Reed had never heard a zither before and found the sound to be attractive. He approached Karas and persuaded him to play for him at his hotel, and made a recording, which Reed brought back to the studio to test. He liked the effect when the zither's sound was placed against the recorded dialogue and, ignoring the protests of many around him, hired Karas and brought him to London for 12 weeks.
Anton Karas screened the movie hundreds of times, devising music for each scene. The Third Man ended up with a vast amount of music, scored in virtually every scene of its 104 minutes. Ironically, the piece that became known as the "Third Man Theme" was something that Anton Karas had written two decades earlier and hadn't played in over 15 years. As he later explained to Reed, playing the zither for a whole night for tips was hard work, and one tended to play the easiest pieces the most often, to save the fingers.
Other zither players never got it to sound just right. The truth was that as recorded for the movie, "The Third Man Theme" was one of the first practical examples of overdubbing on a hit record, rivaling Les Paul's work--Anton Karas had gotten just the right effect working underneath Reed's kitchen table, and had gotten the piece just right by recording and mixing more than one zither part.
The Third Man was finished and prepared for release, and Reed and the production company, London Films, tried to raise interest in it through the music. None of the record companies, however, was interested in recording Karas or releasing the "Third Man Theme." The music was too strange and different, and although British movies had produced some soundtrack successes in the past, those were usually more conventional light classical pieces, not a jangly piece of music played on a central European folk instrument.

The Native American flute isn't difficult to play simply, but it takes real ability to fully exploit its subtle range of expression. David Arkenstone has that ability. He's best known for his keyboard and orchestral opuses of the '80s and '90s, but he's a gifted multi-instrumentalist on guitars and flutes, including the Native American variety. Ah-Nee-Mah is a duo he formed with his wife, keyboardist and singer Diane Arkenstone. They aren't married anymore, but that's about the only thing that has changed as they continue to make music together. Like the other five CDs in the series, Ancient Visions is marked by sweeping synthesizer pads, often propulsive rhythms, and lush arrangements that frame Arkenstone's flute melodies. "Sun Circle" and "Spirits of the Past" stand out for their dynamic romanticism, while Arkenstone creates a meditative space on the echoing flute duet, "Shaman's Dream." But too much of Ah-Nee-Mah comes from the Native store of kitsch. From the banal album title to the amalgam of vague symbolism and echoed chants, it's all wrapped up in the glitter and velvet that has made the Native American new age sound something of a cliché. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

Relaxing and Engaging .......2005-01-25
Influenced by her father, Paul LaRoche of Brule? Perhaps. There are similarities in the way that her flute soars along age-old paths connecting music and our intellectual, emotional and physical patterns. Truly, Paul and Nicole are masters of a very ancient art. So skillful are their compositions, so breathtaking is their understanding of the human soul that their creations not only engage the senses but may manipulate them as well.
Nicole's style is not her father's however; Brule's unique melodies are supported by a more 'masculine' or 'earthy' foundation of traditional Native American music. Nicole is pure flight.
Highly recommended listening for long commutes in city traffic, quiet nights at home or last-minute changes to a project with a looming deadline...anywhere you would like to create a peaceful space.

Native American flutist Douglas Spotted Eagle dedicates this album to children as part of his efforts to support the prevention of child abuse. The result is a compilation of Spotted Eagle's strongest material, beginning with the very emotional "The Traveler," a piece the composer wrote after his children were taken from him. Rife with soothing cedar flute, this album sets an expansive, spiritual mood slow in tempo and sparse in instrumentation. Native chant and drums fill out the swaths of long, lush flute, ambient synth, and chiming guitar. "Daddy's Arms," though an emotionally meaningful song for what seems to be divorced and absent fathers, is definitely the odd pick out. Spotted Eagle is not a trained singer, and the tune would have benefited from one, especially since the featured instrumentation is piano à la Jim Brickman. Outside of this small peculiar blip at the CD's end, this album is a respectable collection of beautiful Native flute music that emits a centered, calming energy. --Karen K. HuggCustomer Reviews:

Another collection of gems from this amazingly prolific singer's Joe Gibbs era. Visions is every bit as compelling as Words Of Wisdom. Brown's voice here is straight, unaffected, and profoundly soulful. Never one to sing silly love songs or use music as an escape from the asphyxia of everyday life, Brown touches on a broad range of experience in "Deliverance Will Come," "Oh Mother," "Love Me Always," "Concrete Castle Kings," "Repatriation," and "Milk And Honey"--always honing in on illuminating truths and rendering them beautifully human. In Brown's hands, even the counsel to a rebellious girl of "Stay at Home" and the rebuke to rumor-mongers in "Say What You Say" take on the stature of myth. --Elena OumanoCustomer Reviews:
