About the Artist
Beginning at the age of eight with piano and flute, and vocal ensemble and choral singing, MELATIAH commenced training in classical voice at the age of fifteen. Along with the theater and dance training provided by Don Martello, Sonia Shaw, Paul Gleason, and Carlos Noble, MELATIAH'S musical knowledge developed as the result of expert training by many teachers and coaches, including John Harstick, Paul Bolman, Irwin Bell, Nancy Henninger, Norman Gulbrandsen, Margaret Hillis, Bunny Thornburgh, Thomas Cleveland, Gerald Eskelin, Natalie Limonick, Sue Raney, and Dick Grove.

As soloist and as member of the American Youth Symphony and Chorus and of the group The Forerunners, MELATIAH has performed around the world - Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, South Korea, and Switzerland - as well as throughout the U.S.A.

After years of preparation, talent, training, and teamwork have converged, resulting in MELATIAH'S debut CD - Wind in the Wheat. Intrumental Smooth Jazz arrangements of original songs written by MELATIAH, Wind in the Wheat features performances by Charlie Bisharat on violin, Pedro Eustache on flutes, Eric Marienthal on saxophone, GRAMMY Award winning John Patitucci on bass, and Kevin Winard on drums and percussion, with the female background vocals performed by MELATIAH. Combining the melodies and harmonies influenced by MELATIAH'S Ukrainian heritage with the classical and jazz elements reflecting MELATIAH'S musical background, Wind in the Wheat provides fresh and unique contemporary music for the listening pleasure of lovers of Smooth Jazz, World Music, and Easy Listening Music.

Here's a chance to dial yourself back to Edwardian England to sample one of the most extraordinary singers of the 20th century. Clara Butt stood 6-foot-2 with a frame to match and a voice that easily spanned the range between a soprano's top notes and a baritone's low ones. An important singer, even if an acquired taste for many, Butt sang with a power that defied the primitive recording equipment of the time. However, Ward Marston has done an amazing job of sonic restoration, so even these acoustic recordings--made between 1909 and 1921--convey the quality of her singing. The repertory is representative of her concert programs: a nod to operatic and oratorio selections, classical songs, and a heavy dose of the folk songs and sentimental ballads that endeared her to audiences, helping to transform her into a national institution. These days, songs like "The little silver ring" and "Snowdrops" may have little intrinsic interest; yet Butt hasn't lost her own thanks to the quality of her vocalism, her one-in-a-million voice, mastery of legato singing, and the perfect diction that lets every word sound. She can take a narrative ballad like "Barbara Allen" and make it a gripping dramatic miniature, and she transforms the quasi-religious sentimentality of "Abide with Me" into something intense. --Dan Davis
