A natural calm.......2007-07-26
I play this CD at the end of my day when I want to unwind and de-stress. It naturally calms you and helps you to relax.
I am not a pill taker at all, and am into more natural ways to find peace and calm. I highly recommend this one.
Excellent.......2007-06-10
My wife loves going to sleep to the sound of ocean waves (and I like it too) without someones music. She loves this CD.
Best sleep aid without a prescription.......2007-04-28
As a life-long insomniac (only kid in kindergarten with bags under his eyes), finding this disc was a true godsend. I bought it on a whim and didn't really learn of its magic until years later, when I got divorced and went through a spell of even worse-than-usual sleepless nights. I found that playing it softly on repeat was enough to help me drop off every time. Not only that, but whenever I woke during the night the waves were there to wash me right back into dreamland. It's been several years now, and a happy second marriage has helped me sleep better, but when I have those tough nights "Ocean Waves" is still there to help me through. Possibly the best money I ever spent on a CD.
great "ocean sounds" CD.......2007-04-09
Great - - four tracks of beautiful & relaxing sounds of ocean waves! Although description on "CD case" mentions sounds of sea lions/sea gulls, I'm unaware of "sounds of creatures", which is an asset for sleeping. I put this CD on repeat & sleep with these beautiful sounds of ocean waves. So much - - for such a low price! Highly recommend!
Relaxing to Ocean Waves of the Echoes of Nature CD.......2007-01-27
I am sitting here listening to the CD as I type. We live 20 miles from
the Gulf Coast of Florida and don't always get a chance to go to the
beach, so this is as close as I get. I love listening to the calming
sound of the waves rushing into the beach and I was pleasantly surprised
to hear the sea gulls. I highly recommend this CD as a relaxation tech-
nique for those like me who have trouble unwinding at the end of the day.
I also highly recommend the "Thundering Rainstorms" CD.
This society that we all live in is always, "Rush, Rush, Rush" and these
CD's have a real calming effect. LOVE THEM!!!!

With his sensational score to the third Ocean's movie, David Holmes sends the cool-o-meter into the red zone--if the film itself matched his explosive cues, it'd be the most stylish, kinetic thing Hollywood had produced in eons. (You, the viewer, will be the judge of that.) Though Holmes did good work on the previous two Ocean's entries, he's outdone himself this time around. Never mind that the action is set in Vegas: The vibe here is Swinging London seen through psychedelia-tinted lenses, and augmented with wacked-out Ennio Morricone touches and late '60s/early '70s va-va-voom funk. Every track brims with finger-snapping details, like the great bass line on "Zippo," the cool bongos-and-horns combo on "Earthquake," or the aggressive battle royale between electric guitar and synthesizer on "Fender Roads." Holmes takes a break for a couple of numbers in the middle: Puccio Roelens' insane cover of "Caravan" and Isao Tomita's switched-on early-'70s interpretation of Debussy on the Moog synthesizer. Tucked at the end is the CD's token nod to Vegas, Frank Sinatra's take on Lee Hazlewood's "This Town." Just listen to the horns on this baby: They explode out of the speakers. It'd be easy to say that they just don't make music like this anymore, but actually David Holmes just did. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Ocean's Thirteen is the third actioncomedy-thriller in the blockbuster series that began with 2001's Ocean's Eleven, which grossed nearly $200 million in the U.S. alone, and continued with 2004's Ocean's Twelve, which racked up more than $125 million at the U.S. box office. The critically acclaimed soundtrack albums for both movies won BMI Film Music Awards for inventive techno-funk composer David Holmes. Both on screen and on album, Ocean's Thirteen epitomizes the cinema of cool.
Customer Reviews:
Duped again by the word "Soundtrack".......2007-07-30
I agree with the above reviewer that i have also enjoyed all the Oceans sountracks to date and Ocean Thirteen is no exception. the problem is that the term soundtrack implies that the songs heard in the Trailer and Movie would be on the CD. This CD is/would better labled as "The Score" with a few extra songs by additional artists.
Not nearly what i was expecting, but still enjoyable.
Missing Opening Song.......2007-07-22
This soundtrack is excellent, as expected, with great songs that perfectly fit the scenes and the drama of the movie. However, there's at least one missing song, as always happens with soundtracks...
"Neil Richardson - The Riviera Affair" is the song played in the opening credits.
Slick, fun and fabulous.......2007-06-18
All of the "Ocean's" movies have incredible music, and "Ocean's Thirteen" is no exception. The music is so unique: jazz, funk and techno all rolled into one. My biggest complaint is that most of the tracks are incredibly short (under two minutes in length), but that's the case with most movie soundtracks. The best tracks on this album are "Not Their Fight," which is a variation of the theme music used in all the "Ocean's" movies; "Snake Eyes," which is the music that plays in the film during the ingenious three-minute heist scene; and Frank Sinatra's utterly fantastic rendition of "This Town." The "Ocean's" movie soundtracks are always as slick as the films themselves. I'll listen to this CD again and again.
Settle Some Confusion.......2007-06-17
This is a great soundtrack, and I'd thought I'd settle some confusion about the "missing" trailer music. The track is called "Five Diamond Men", and it's exclusive for purchase on iTunes, along with a remix of "This Town" by Frank Sinatra, though there's no reason in hell they should EVER remix a Sinatra song.
Anyway, great album. Too bad about the iTunes exclusive.
Missing Song.......2007-06-16
Mate, if you've been catching the same trailer as I have recently then the song in question is actually from the OST "Out Of Sight" which of course Holmes also scored, his first collaboration with Soderbergh. Not sure of the exact name of the tune but its on there somewhere (if of course we're talking about the same trailer and song!!).
Hope this helps?
I saw the movie last weekend and the soundtrack was one of the highlights for sure but that is always the case with Holmes; he's a legend and I'd give any work of his 6 stars if the option was there - fresh, innovative, at times challenging but always, always uber-cool.

Album Description
Ocean Avenue is the major label debut album from the five-piece Yellowcard. Produced by Neal Avron (Everclear, New Found Glory), the album sees the band update the popular SoCal pop-punk sound with help from classically trained violinist Sean Mackin.
Customer Reviews:
Okay, I suppose..........2007-03-23
I don't know, this CD just didn't really do it for me. The chord progressions for many of the songs aren't that great. That's not the case for "Way Away", "Ocean Avenue", "Only One", "One Year, Six Months" and a few other very listenable songs on this album. But it's not really worth it to buy the whole album, in my opinion. I guess I could see this being more appealing to some other people, you know, the scream-my-heart-out kind, who don't really need music, they just need a way to vent their anger. Of course, as the afore mentioned songs will prove, there IS some real music on this album. Just not as much as I think Yellowcard is capable of.
great cd.......2006-10-19
this is their best cd so far. im sure their music is just going to get better!! good album, buy the cd!
I don't get it.......2006-10-16
A pop rock band with a violin? I'm sorry, I just don't get it. It's not like the band sucks, they're good musicians if you're into that poppy sound, but the violin just confuses me. There's a time and place for violin in rock music, with an ensemble arrangement for example, but not solo. IMHO.
They finally got somewhere.......2006-07-15
Ocean Avenue did wonders for YC. They finally got onto the radio after about 7 years of working their @$$es off. And this album does not dissapoint. It has everything a good band needs to make it big. And compared to their first albums, "Midget Tossing", and "Where We Stand", this album is proof that any band can go from struggling to famous if they try.
The second best CD I've ever bought.......2006-06-14
The best is lights and sounds. This CD has some of the best drums not in Metallica or Rush I have ever heard. The violin is the best outside of Led Zeppelin (think Kashmir) or Frank Zappa. The best songs, the ones my band is doing, would be the first three and Life of a salesman. other notables include Miles Apart, Empty Apartment, and Back Home. the rest of the songs aren't bad, they're just a little slow and soft.

Customer Reviews:
Relaxing Ocean sounds.......2007-05-18
Great Cd for relaxation. Soft, repetitive surf sounds and wave action, no blaring foghorns.
Ocean Surf, nature sounds audio cd.......2007-05-13
Dan Gibson consistently mastered, if not invented the art of nature recordings. This is not a music CD. Mr. Gibson used a very sensitive directional microphone and sat still like a guru while nature spoke. Not so easy--think about how frequently planes fly over our heads. Yet, this is not another noisy, monotonous hissing ocean recording either. Throughout, it is consistently relaxing as well as rich with almost visual detail. It is not distracting for massage, meditation, relaxation, sleeping, etc. unless it is played too loudly. However, turn up the volume while hanging out at home and it can transform your landlocked condo into a beachfront bungalow.
Annoying rocks.......2007-01-17
The sound of the surf is what I was looking for but the added trickle of the water movement amound the tide pools is not restful in fact they are down right annoying.
PURE OCEAN; use this with Deep Breathing! Therapy for the Soul.......2006-12-11
This Dan Gibson CD is one I use to teach deep, diaphragmatic breathing...the tempo is good if you use one breath in, with one wave, and one breath out, with the second wave. This is very helpful for relaxation and for breathing practice for Anxiety disorders. There are no annoying "extra noises" like seagulls, foghorns, boat motors, or otherwise extraneous distractions. What you get is Pure Ocean Waves...something quite difficult to find in the "ocean" of SFX and "relaxation CD's" out there. Slightly over an hour long, you can use this for one great calming break. No music in this one either, JUST the waves resounding a crash, trickle, smooth movement. If you can't relax with this one, we should talk!!

The idea of remaking the Rat Pack's infamous shaggy-dog story cum Vegas heist thriller may have seemed ludicrous without a Rat Pack. But that didn't deter ever-inventive director Steven Soderbergh, who's again wisely teamed with not only Out of Sight star George Clooney, but that underrated project's Irish-born club mixer turned scorer David Holmes, as well. The resulting soundtrack is a spunky, cross-cultural joyride that careens from Perry Como's "Papa Loves Mambo" to the loopy hip-hop of Handsome Boy Modeling School's "The Projects," while paying some gratifying visits to Percy Faith, Arthur Lyman, Quincy Jones, the terminally cool Claude Debussy, and, of course, King Elvis along the way. Holmes's own concoctions are as smartly retro-hip and seamless, slyly intertwining cool jazz-funk and smoky cine-Muzak with some dance-floor grooves that keep the musical tension boiling. The sharp dialogue snippets that bubble throughout seem a quirky throwback to soundtracks gone by, a sometimes oversized olive in Holmes's inviting musical cocktail. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
If you really want the music...........2007-07-04
DAVID HOLMES made a name with this soundtrack, and to get his name out, he sent out a PROMO COPY for the OSCAR race. now, i don't normally recommend downloading music but it IS ILLEGAL to buy this CD as it was not intended to be bought. i am lucky to OWN it as i bought it on EBAY it its THE ENTIRE SCORE - NO DIALOGE. Its less then 45 mins in length and has 35 tracks if i am not mistaken. it worth getting. my friend have downloaded it off of TORRENTRACTOR or TORRENTSPY and i recommend you do that, plus add the tracks you get here and make a COMPLETE soundtrack. that what i did.
Dialogue helped and hurt........2007-05-21
I understand why some listeners are frustrated that the film's dialogue was included with some of the tracks. For the most part, I enjoy how it brings back memories of this very clever film. But there are times where I wish I didn't have to hear it. Wouldn't it be nice if this was produced like the musical instrument lesson books with CD's that have one set of songs as solo and one set of songs with accompaniment? I'd love that choice. Funny, though, how I never notices some of the background music in scenes. I love those old songs, and would love to be able to have those songs without dialogue. All in all, I am satisfied with this CD. I am glad I knew ahead of time that this was produced so "uniquely".
Oceans Eleven Soundtrack.......2007-05-13
Some songs are a mix of lines and music (mostly moments) from the movie. There are several uninterrupted music only selections. The songs fall in chronological order and all have the same modern, funk. My personal favorite is the rap song (which also has a heavy amount of funk)which is shown in the movie just as Brad Pitt's character is introduced and giving his poker classes. It's funky without being hard or uninteligible. Also, the music played while the heist is being completed is a funky, hip victory song. Great background party music.
For the Circus Animals!.......2007-04-13
i don't want to write an over analyzed review of this soundtrack But what i do want to say is if you're looking to hear the same great music that you heard in the movie& music that made you look this CD up in the first place...you've got it here! you will be able to draw visuals of the movie while listening to it. from Brad Pitt's bar lounge scene to the ending scene in front of the fountain in Vegas...don't over analyze this CD...it's fun and contains all the great tunes from the movie!!! if you're a fan of the Ocean's movies...but this CD!!!
Okay, but..........2007-01-10
I would have preferred not to have the dialogue mash into the tracks. It's typical of Soderbergh soundtracks, and I don't mind the dialogue being there, I'd just prefer it on its own tracj (like, say, the Snatch soundtrack).

Amazon.com essential recording
The 1974 album on which Clapton's solo career truly caught fire, 461 Ocean Boulevard is best remembered for its hit version of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff"--perhaps the first time many in America ever heard the rhythms of reggae music. But it's also an album on which emotions run high, especially on two Clapton originals, the prayerful "Give Me Strength" and the pleading "Let It Grow." Clapton maintains his grounding in the blues with versions of Robert Johnson's "Steady Rollin' Man" and Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out"; revisits a rock & roll classic in Johnny Otis's "Willie and the Hand Jive"; and turns the standard "Motherless Children" into a showcase of snarling guitars. Following a period of dark reclusiveness, 461 Ocean Boulevard was a powerful comeback for Clapton. --Daniel Durchholz
Amazon.com
This was Clapton's comeback record after a long bout with heroin addiction. Up through 1970 or so, he had been a restless musical seeker, opening rock up with his guitar experimentation, trying to get to the bottom of the blues. There is none of this on 461. He seems relieved just to be alive. It's a low-key affair, and that suits him. Some of his best songs are here, as well as his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." Torn and frayed from the melee inside him, this album may be the most personal blues he ever made. --Steve Tignor
Customer Reviews:
TANNED, RESTED, AND READY, CLAPTON COMES BACK MELLOW, BUT STRONG, WITH 461 OCEAN BOULEVARD !.......2007-07-03
Eric Clapton recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard (1974) after kicking his heroin habit, and during the time he was living at, you guessed it, 461 Ocean Boulevard in Miami, Florida (the house is pictured on the album cover). This is a strong Eric Clapton album, even though it's nothing like a Cream or a Derek and The Dominos album. His time in Florida definitely affected his outlook on life, and that's not a bad thing. The album really rocks in some places, like Motherless Children and Mainline Florida, but the rock is fun and laid back, not foreboding or contentious. There is some blues on the album, as he covers Elmore James' I Can't Hold Out, and Robert Johnson's Steady Rollin' Man, but again, these songs have an easy-going feel to them, and they are very good. The huge reggae hit, Bob Marley's I Shot The Sherriff, put Clapton's solo career on track, and of course, sounds great. Clapton plays his dobro on Cowboy's Please Be With Me (his late friend, Duane Allman, played dobro on the original). Let It Grow has a layered acoustic/electric guitar sound, a steady, leisurely beat, and is classic Clapton. Recording artist/actress Yvonne Elliman sings backing vocals on the album, and trades lead vocals with Eric on the funky Get Ready. 461 Ocean Boulevard is a very good, laid back album, with some solid guitar work blended in with the mellow atmosphere and carefree rocking beat of most of the songs. It's also one of Eric Clapton's best solo albums.
Barcardi 151 Ocean Boulevard.......2007-02-18
The comeback. Claptons passion for the blues is doing the talking here, but still slowhand makes the best album of his career. He had replaced his heroin addiction with an alcohol fixation, which made him very laid back, but it all works here very well.
Laid Back EC, Living and Loving in South Florida.......2006-07-26
I have to confess that, while I love Clapton, his albums are often a hit-and-miss affair. And I can't say I am a fan of the numerous recent blues tribute albums he has put out lately. For me I enjoy his work with Cream, his guest work, his first few albums, the one he recorded with The Band, a few older live albums, and bits of the Phil Collins-produced record in the early 80s. After that it's a fall-off, but I am thankful for all the great music he has turned out over the years.
I have been listening to 461 a lot lately. It holds up exceedingly well. The groove is laid-back, with solid musicianship and expert song selection. It makes for great road music, especially "Willie and the Hand Jive," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the classic closer, "Mainline Florida."
The ballads are beautiful, too. There is not a weak track on the album. There is a consistent tone, an aversion to excess and a concentration on the note and harmonic "fit" that makes this album an overall winner in EC's catalog. As someone who used to party in EC's old house at 461 Ocean Boulevard in Golden Beach in the early 80s, let me say -- you did it (and us) proud.
Sour Cream.......2006-07-06
32 years ago I was so stoked that Clapton was finally coming out with a new album, I walked five miles to Deorsey's Records in Lewiston, Maine the day that it was released to buy this much anticipated record. The still near virgin vinyl remains in my LP collection and has only been played once. Once was enough. Heroin robbed a true master of his creativeness, inspiration and technical ability. Sad.
NOT A BAD ALBUM BY ANY MEANS, BUT A BIT 'PATCHY'.......2006-06-16
I GENERALLY PREFER EC WHEN HE DOES HIS 'LAID BACK' COUNTRY ROCK/COUNTRY BLUES STUFF AND THERE ARE A FEW TRACKS THAT FALL INTO THIS CATEGORY. I'M NOT A REAL BLUES FAN BUT I LIKE THE WAY EC (AND MANY OF HIS CONTEMPORARIES) PRESENT BLUES MUSIC IN A WAY THAT MAKES IT MORE ACCESSIBLE TO A WIDER AUDIENCE (INCLUDING MYSELF). THERE IS SOME FINE GUITAR PLAYING ON THIS ALBUM AND EC IS IN FINE FORM VOCALLY (ALTHOUGH, PERHAPS, NOT AT HIS BEST). I BELIEVE SOME OF THE GUITAR PLAYING WAS SHARED BY GEORGE TERRY, SO HE DESERVES SOME CREDIT ALSO.
HERE ARE A FEW COMMENTS ABOUT INDIVIDUAL TRACKS (* DENOTES A FAVOURITE)(SONGWRITERS IN BRACKETS):
MOTHERLESS CHILDREN (Trad. arr. Eric Clapton/Carl Radle) - A real 'rocker'. Great drumming and slide guitar. Vocals a bit indistinct (perhaps, slightly over-produced).
GIVE ME STRENGTH* (Eric Clapton) - Slow tempo song with some really mellow dobro playing (incl. 40 second solo intro.). EC's vocals are restrained but not without some emotion (as befitting this type of song). Organ accompaniment gives a gospel feel to the sound.
WILLY AND THE HAND JIVE* (Johnny Otis) - Instrumentally unexceptional but great 'shuffling' rhythm and really 'laid back' vocals.
GET READY (Eric Clapton/Yvonne Elliman) - Features EC and Yvonne Elliman sharing vocals. OK, but a bit monotonous.
I SHOT THE SHERIFF (Bob Marley) - I'm not that keen on reggae music (to me, it has a rhythm that 'plods' rather than 'rocks'). Instrumentally, nothing 'to write home about'. However, its a pretty good track - decent song, tight harmony vocals delivered by Yvonne Elliman & co. EC does a good job with a 'pseudo-jamaican' inflection in his voice.
I CAN'T HOLD OUT* (Elmore James arr. Eric Clapton)) - A jazz/blues sound. Features some more amazing slide guitar playing.
PLEASE BE WITH ME (Charles Scott Boyer) - A lilting ditty with a 'folksy' sound. Features acoustic and electric guitar. Pleasant, but a bit too 'sugary' for me.
LET IT GROW (Eric Clapton) - Ordinary song, vocally and instrumentally unexceptional, tedious and 'drones' on a bit.
STEADY ROLLIN' MAN* (Robert Johnson arr. Eric Clapton) - Great percussion and keyboards. Features some nice sharp guitar licks.
MAINLINE FLORIDA (George Terry) - Ordinary song. EC's vocals are drowned by the backing vocals and instruments. Pretty awful really.
AN ALBUM WORTH HAVING FOR SOME EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD 'BLUESY' GUITAR PLAYING AND, ON MOST TRACKS, GOOD VOCALS. NOT BAD AT ALL - BUT OVER RATED. I HAVE THE REMASTERED VERSION OF THIS ALBUM AND OTHER REVIEWERS HAVE COMMENTED ON THE QUESTIONABLE REMASTERING QUALITY - I TEND TO AGREE WITH THEM.

Steven Soderbergh's antic sequel to his remake of the Rat Pack's shaggy casino caper may well be one of the most playfully goofy action flicks to come out of contemporary Hollywood. But while the director confounds the expected sequelitis at every turn, he wisely lets Irish club DJ cum film composer David Holmes reprise the same winning formula that made his collaborations on the previous film and Soderbergh's underrated jewel
Out of Sight such hipster delights. While Holmes' original music is rooted in 70's-inspired acid-jazz , he punctuates its innate club cool with an eclectic, equally hip selection of source music. The film's foreign locales inspire choices like Ornella Vanoni's seductive opener "L' Appuntamento" and Piero Umiliani's shadowy " Crepuscolo Sul Mare," while elsewhere Holmes indulges his own savory tastes for everything from Gallic neo-psychedelia (Roland Vincent's "L.S.D. Partie") to adventurous jazz (Grusin's "Ascension to Virginity") and rock-exotica mash-ups (John Schroeder's intoxicating "Explosive Corrosive Joseph"). --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Ocean's 12 is the sequel to the 2001 action-comedy-thriller blockbuster Ocean's 11, which grossed nearly $200 million in the U.S. alone. Set three years later, this film has Danny Ocean expanding his gang of con artists with new members in New York City before they jet to Amsterdam, Rome, and Paris to pull off three separate heists. The critically acclaimed Ocean's 11 soundtrack won a BMI Film Music Award for David Holmes, who returns to helm the music of Ocean's 12, which is sure to be an exotic, hip, cutting edge and surprisingly underground as its predecessor.

Good, but............2007-07-01
Like everyone else we wanted the best song of the movie and it's not on the soundtrack. My mistake, next time I'll know better.
La Caution The A La Menthe.......2007-05-31
This is the nightfox song. It's available to buy on Napster, or just download if you are a Napster to Go subscriber. Just search for the artist under La Caution.
Good soundtrack but missing one key song; I know where you can find it........2007-05-23
La Caution does the song "The A La Menthe" that is missing on the soundtrack CD. iTunes carries it for 99 cents. That's where I got it.
Nightfox laser dance song.......2007-03-31
I read other reviews in search of the best song of the movie but not on the soundtrack and I did some searching and found the CD but it's not on Amazon anymore although the page is still up, the name of the CD is "Peines De Maures / Arc-En-Ciel Pour Daltoniens [IMPORT]"by La Caution. You can probably buy it on ebay or your local underground music store.
Music BAM!.......2007-03-09
The nightfox laser dance song without question is a sample/remix/remake/ BAM from a part of the score from the 1979 Italian movie, The Concorde Affair. Just saw it on 3-8-07 and saw Ocean 12 like 2 weeks prior.
No doubt it is the same thing only redone.

A baffling (Enigmatic) abundance of musical ideas (Ocean). .......2007-06-05
I've never seen an album so unanimously loved here at Amazon! But it is nice confirmation for those of us who place it among our top 5 albums of all time. There's no question that all the musicians here were top-notch, and just worked so naturally together on this album. But the dazzling solos would have gone unnoticed had it not been for Ponty's incredible compositions supporting them, and the unique voice of his electric violin. This was the type of album in the 1970's that caught your attention immediately, and stretched your musical tastes into a whole new and exciting style of contemporary music. For a young man (at that time!) who was just learning to appreciate the bass guitar in much of progressive music, I found Armstrong's jazzy but progressive fretless bass a source of endless creativity and fun.
Really, there is little I can add to the gushing reviews that others have already posted, but I needed to acknowledge this album's brilliance if only for reasons of posterity. This was indeed JLP's best, and one of the greatest albums ever - fusion, jazz, rock, prog...whatever. Absolutely essential for those stranded on a deserted island surrounded by...ocean.
(Bring extra batteries!)
I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 9.7/10; Performance = 9.5/10; Production = 8.5/10; CD length = 8/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.3 ("5 stars")
Right where I left it..........2007-05-09
I experienced this music when I was 20, back when Enigmatic Ocean was originally released, while smoking pot with a group of friends. I've always disliked smoking pot, and never had a good experience with it EXCEPT for that night -- it felt so wonderful being tossed around in all that sound. I haven't heard EO again until tonight, and it's every bit as incredible as I remembered it to be... now THAT's what I call transcendental.
Unanimous.......2007-04-06
Like the others, I agree that this is JLP's best (IMHO) -
I have a cool story that can be used as trivia:
Last year (2006) I saw a Vital Information show here in L.A., and Steve Smith was as phenomenal as ever. After the show, I had the opportunity to meet him, and I always had one question for him: "Are you the same Steve Smith on Jean Luc Ponty's 'Enigmatic Ocean'...?" He smiled and said (very humbly) "...yes... it was my first album recording. I was a teenager then..." -he said it with a big grin, too.
Yep, this is THE album to get.
Listeners say "YES"!.......2007-03-15
The reviews here show that people are passionate about this recording. Most feel this is not only JLP's finest but also one of fusion's best. I agree. What really sets this apart and gives it such lasting power are the musicians. Yes, the compostins are great but this would not have been the classic it is if JLP had gathered other players. After buying this you should check out the follow-up works by these briliiant artists...
Drummer Steve Smith's Vital Information
Guitarist Allan Holdsworth (anything - he is truly a living legend)
Allan Zavod - hard to find but worth it, the band New York Mary
Daryl Stuermer's work with early Phil Collins, Daryl's the weakest on this date but he's still great.
Ralphe Armstrong with Mahavishnu Orch.
This recording introduced me to Holdsworth. I thought he was playing wrong but I could not stop listening to his solos. Then I "got it" and wrong became oh so right! Thank you JLP for this revelation!
Jean- Luc's best of the best.......2007-01-25
I'm a huge fan of Ponty. Have quite a few of his recordings. This is the best of the lot (although Cosmic Messenger ranks a close second). Everybody was in their right place during the making of this disk. With bassman Ralphe Armstrong at his side, this man and his band have it turned up all the way with their ability to play music beyond those of most mortal men.

Simply wonderful!.......2007-01-09
If you are a music buff like myself ( and I do like all kinds of music ), than what's not to like about The Boléro, by Ravel? And I don't buy into that hog-wash of a story that Ravel wrote this piece in the beginning of dementia...gimmie a break and give that man credit where credit is due.....The Boléro is a master piece! Ok...my review: It was a pleasure to shop for this Cd on Amazon ( after a disappointing search in a main music store )I found what I was looking for, ordered it and anxiously waited it's delivery, which was only about 5 days. The Cd was delivered in tip-top shape and I have enjoyed repeated plays of The Boléro! ( if it were an LP, the grooves would have been worn down by now! ) Today...it's back to classic rock for me. I would surely order from Amazon again!
quiet time reorganization of the mind.......2007-01-05
Have listened to this over the years from a teen who couldn't understand why anyone would write something so slow and repetitive, to a young married who now understood a vehicle for passion in a world filled with disraction, to a person who hears the joy and passion and struggles of a composer and appreciates the pain as a growth process for humans. Tenderly, hot, good stuff.More please.
Sumptuous.......2007-01-04
To heck with arguments about Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, etc. Ravel's Bolero was the first ever piece of rock music, so there. This version by Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony totally nails it, always been my favorite version. The trick is to not let things get over the top as the intensity heightens. Flawless readings of the Rapsodie Espagnole and La Valse to boot makes this an essential disc. This is all the evidence you need that Charles Dutoit is the greatest living Ravel interpreter.
You never have enough Ravel - just never........2006-01-15
This two disk set is one of those that you should add to your collection because it is wonderful music, sounds great, and is extremely affordable. Everyone knows and loves "Boléro". Commissioned by Ida Rubinstein as a ballet and premiered in 1928 was not a musical success. At another performance, led by Toscanini, Ravel complained that the tempo was too fast. Toscanini replied that it was the only way to save the work. But it soon became a mass success to Ravel's surprise and consternation. He felt they loved it for all the wrong reasons. The violinist Hélène Jourdan-Morhange relates this interesting story of one incident involving the work:
"Ravel was extremely surprised at the mass success of "Boléro" `They're going to turn it into another "Madelon", he said, rather crossly; and deep down he felt that the obsessive, musico-sexual element in the piece was probably behind its enormous popularity. But one old lady was proof against the contagion. Ravel's brother Edouard saw her, at the first performance, wedged tightly in her seat shouting above the applause `Rubbish! Rubbish!' Maurice, when informed by his brother, replied mysteriously: `That Old Lady got the message!'" from Ravel et nous 1945 page 166.
The other works on this disk are more substantive than the 15-minute crescendo and its constantly changing orchestral colors. The entire "Mother Goose" ballet - who doesn't love this? Although you usually here it performed as the suite. The "Rhapsodie Espagnol" is a favorite and delivers that wonderful Spanish flavor with a French sauce.
"Le tombeau de Couperin" and "Valses nobles et sentimentale" are orchestrations of major piano works (with some alterations in the tombeau) (there are other pieces on these disks that also began as piano works) that are probably more well known to the general public as orchestral works. However, they are very essential works in the pianist's repertoire, and I encourage you to get to know them in that form as well.
"La Valse" is really two things. There is a tribute to Johann Strauss. Ravel admitted that every composer wanted to write a very good waltz, but that it was very difficult. So, he wrote this symphonic waltz as a tribute. However, the second half is something else, is it not? There is decadence and a madness to it that seems like a nightmare to me. As if we are all trapped in this thing until everything falls apart with pain and loss into nothing. A fascinating piece.
There are other small and popular pieces on this disk that are all done well.
Recommended!
The Best of Ravel By Master Conductor And Orchestra.......2005-11-10
French-Canadian conductor Charles Dutoit and the Motneral Symphony Orchestra deliver what is the most musically satisfying collection of Ravel Bolero's French music. At a fine price, this is a fine jewel, with moments that sparkle and burn with a beautiful fire. The first track is of course the famous Bolero, with its hypnotic, singular theme that is expanded into a climatic crescendo which is overtly sexual, primal and sensuous. It was originally a ballet about a Spanish dancer (dancing the bolero of course) in a bawdy cafe. She is spurred on to dance even more erotically by the lusty men until we can assume the men can take no more. The Rhapsody Espagnole is an evocative portrait of Spain, with lyrical passages and tonal beauty. The Valse is another classic of French music of the early 20th century. Ravel's mother had died prior to the premiere. It is a slow, romantic waltz that escalates into a frenzied dance of death. In musical terms, there is nothing too different from La Valse and Bolero. They are both basically one motif that is repeated but changes in volume and pacing. The Pavane For A Dead Princess is my favorite work of his. It is possibly the most gorgeous funeral music one will ever hear. Far from being a melancholy piece, it is a stately, Renaissance-like work that pays homage to exoticism of the East and Romanticism of the West. The Dead Princess we assume is either Moorish or Spanish and the music is lilting and spiritual without ever reaching the heights of frustration or despair that Bolero or Valse take on. The Tomb of Couperin is also a funereal piece but its beauty lies in its imitation of Baroque music. Couperin was a Baroque composer of keyboard works. The music is aptly called neo-baroque or neoclassical since it was composed in the 20th century. This same style is embedded in Valses Nobles Et Sentimentales and Minuet Antique- all works that reflect the music of the Baroque and classical eras, an homage to Handel and Gluck. Daphne Et Cloe is perhaps his most ambitious work, as it expands on the Baroque classic and makes it more operatic and orchestrally grander. All fans of Ravel will want to own this recording. Dutoit knows this music down to a T and the orchestra captures nuance and subtlety in a variety of both light and dark textures. The music is brimming with life and the sound is crisp and beautifully remastered.
