5 out of 5 stars just plain good music.......2007-07-03

music, of course, is the same as beauty. It's in the eye (ear) of the beholder. with these albums, one can see that JF has improved, even though that was thought undo-able. How can you get better than great???

5 out of 5 stars Fogerty.......2007-06-10

Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Find.......2007-02-07

Fogerty shows diverstiy in this forgotten little gem. Covers of Hank Williams Sr.,the 5 Blind Boys of Alabama, and Jimmy Rogers, and other classic country and gospel tunes are here. Though I prefer the Country tunes to the Gospel covers,(John's voice is better geared toward Rock and Country)this collection of material is definately worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Add 5 more stars.......2007-01-22

Five stars is not enough. This is a great great album.
Although this may date me, I bought this album new in 1973 when it first came out. It remains to this day my favorite album of all time.
Being a huge CCR fan from the opening chords of Proud Mary when it was first played on AM radio back in 1968, this album forever changed the music I began to listen to and come to love. It may have taken me a few more years to "discover" the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Billy Joe Shaver, George, Willie, (and the list goes on....) if it were not for this album. For that I am eternally thankful to John Fogerty.

While the songs are not originals he makes them his own. I'm sure 'ol Hank smiled when he first heard Jambalaya.
Back in 1973 doing a one-man-band record was not like doing it today with all the digital tools available. John Fogerty did this and made it sound convincing using a bunch of talent and the technology available at the time. And it still sounds great.
I wonder if John's brother had Photo Shop on his PC in '73 to do that great cover shot of the "band". The original cover didnt have Fogerty's name on it, his name only appearing on the back in small letters, Arranged & Produced by John Fogerty. This particular cover came out a few years later as a Fantasy Records re-release.
Although I own the vinyl copies of both covers I dont have the CD of this cover so I don't know if its remasterd or not. There were several releases of this CD over the years with the original cover artwork as well as an awesome sounding remastered Japanese release with a cardboard bi-fold CD jacket with the original cover additional pictures inside. (I own 3 copies of this one, one still sealed)I would recommend seeking out this version.

Thank you for making this album but PLEASE John Fogerty do another like this real soon. It should be easier this time.

5 out of 5 stars Great music from the past.......2006-11-10

I'm a die hard Fogerty fan, and many albums shunned by many are some of my favorites. This album is all songs from my childhood, folk songs that bring back memories.

Album Description

Earning Their White Stripes. "But what I'm listening to most of the time at present is an album called Good For What Ails You, which is an album of songs that people used to listen to at medicine shows all over the States. It's quite an interesting album and I think that people would be well advised to pick it up." Jack White - Sunday Mail (Australia) Dec 18, 2005

Five Stars. Groundbreaking. "Fans of Nick Tosches' Where Dead Voices Gather will lap up this extraordinary snapshot of an America that is still shrouded in shadow. Good For What Ails You supplants the Harry Smith collections by surveying the people's music of the day, some of which sounds like nothing you have heard before." Jon Savage - MOJO Dec 2005

Before motion pictures, before radio, before television, the traveling Medicine Shows brought entertainment to America! Flamboyant pitch doctors roamed the land, hawking their tonics, elixirs, and miracle cures, and with them came a host of singers, dancers, comedians, banjo pickers, blues shouters, jug blowers, string ticklers, and minstrel men. The shows died out by mid-20th century, but not before a handful of seasoned veterans left their musical legacy on phonograph records. Here are classic performances by such colorful names as Pink Anderson, Daddy Stovepipe, Gid Tanner, Blind Sammie, Bogus Ben Covington, Fiddlin' John Carson, Banjo Joe, Shorty Godwin, Beans Hambone, Emmett Miller & His Georgia Crackers, the Three Tobacco Tags, and many more!

This gave us 50 tracks of original music. Along with it you get a nice booklet that tells the history of the medicine shows and individual descriptions of each track and it's performers.

5 out of 5 stars You will feel so much better.......2007-01-25

You just can't imagine what the life of a performer on the road in the 20, 30's (or earlier) must have been like. The ups of course was the freedom, and the fun at times. The downs include never knowing what was around the corner, the cold (or heat), some of the boarding houses I would imagine would have been dreadful amongst many others.

But at least we can listen to the music. I've only received this the other day and I've not taken it out of the player, it goes to work with me and takes me home again, it plays in the background when I'm busy about the house. Yes some of the sound quality is hissy, but they are old recordings and besides I would rather hear it like that, it adds to the feel. These are happy songs, even when they are talking about slashing someones throat. If you looking at this you obviously have an interest in this style of music and you would be doing yourself a favour by purchasing this wonderful collection. You get 2 CD's and a wonderful booklet that tells you a little history of the genre and pictures of some the the performers on the CD's as well as a little history on each of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars The right medicine for the blahs! Outstanding fun!.......2006-10-23

Step right up..ladies and gentlemen...Are you feeling blah listening to those same old CD's you've had for the last several years? Does today's music leave you cold? Well, you've come to the right place. Restore your enthusiasm...bring back the fun, with 50 recordings from the golden age of medicine shows. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Many of these fine artists are obscure names to most people of this generation...but alas...like an old ancient Indian cure...this box set will bring you back to life. Yes friends and neighbors...it also comes with a beautiful full-color booklet with all the songs, dates and stories of old. Uh..excuse me son, don't crowd the stage. IT'S A PANACEA FOR ALL BORING AILMENTS! Yes and considering how old these gems are (1925-36) they are all in remarkable shape...and your sense of humor will be too. So pick one up today. It;s more fun than a brand new Victrola!

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!.......2006-08-28

'Good For What Ails You' is a great set of cd's with old songs that were sung at old medicine shows. I remember some of those songs from records and radio programs from my childhood - songs that I had totally forgotten!

I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone would attend the "show" and listen to the music, sales pitches, and go home with something! He truly enjoyed the cd's, also.

Even if medicine shows are new to you, the music is worth the time to listen. Lot's of fun, interesting lyrics, and you might even hear something that has come back again!?

5 out of 5 stars Priceless anthology.......2006-07-05

This element of American history should never be forgotten, and this anthology ensures that it won't. The accompanying booklet is a textbook of fascinating anecdotes and photographs, and it even includes a small, helpful insert of "spelling errata" to guide the reader through the language of the time. The music itself transports the listener to a time that seems like ancient history, populated by snake oil salesmen who employed fast-picking, fast-talking one-man bands to make their product more appealing to the desperately poor. But this collection also reminds us that times haven't changed all that much since those days of the Great Depression. After all, when was the last time you heard a trendy, catchy song in a commercial trying to sell you something as basic as toothpaste?

Album Description

Modern bluegrass was born on July 4, 1957 when the original Country Gentlemen took the stage at the Admiral Grill in Baileys Crossroads, Virginia. The foursome heard on this disc is the "classic" Country Gentlemen-Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray, one of the greatest ensembles in bluegrass history. This reissue of the Gents' 1973 album catches the band in its prime. 28-page booklet, 16 tracks, 46 mins.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars classic music, but not the classic line-up.......2007-06-13

This is typically great music from the Country Gentlemen, recorded at a series of live dates in 1964 but not released until 1973. However, the liner notes erroneously refer to it as being from the "classic" Gents line-up of Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray, when in fact it was Ed Ferris, not Tom, on bass.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hard-hitting Americana, not smoothie country-pop.......2003-03-14

There are no two ways around it, this is an excellent collection of performances by one of the true mountain masters, Hobart Smith. First off, if for no other reason, get this disc for his rendition of Cuckoo Bird. This continues to be the single most intense banjo playing ever applied to this excellent tune. Hobart's playing is full of fire and drive and will certainly shake you up. An absolutely incredible piece for comparing/contrasting with other excellent versions such as those on the Black Banjo Songsters Of North Carolina & Virginia cd, Clarence Ashley's Greenback Dollar disc, etc...

Last Chance is another banjo masterpiece that isn't far behind Cuckoo Bird.

Unlike one of the previous reviewers, I'd say that I prefer Dock Boggs' voice to Hobart's but that's just splitting hairs. They are both two of the greatest musicians to ever attack the banjo. Although Hobart does hold a certain distinction for being such a great musician on so many instruments, of which this collection includes him on banjo, fiddle, piano, and guitar. I'm not a huge fan of the several piano pieces though, except for Dixie, which is probably my favorite version of this tune that I have ever heard. Still though, in my opinion, Hobart's magic came predominantly on the solo banjo tunes (and/or banjo & vocal), and secondarily on the fiddle, particularly solo fiddle tunes. He has excellent tone and just... well, he puts the notes where they need to be.

With the ever-growing dominance of style-over-substance in American culture, a disc such as this means even more to me. For quite a while the hills really were alive with the sound of music. Now those sounds are the echoes of fading memories, more often than not.

5 out of 5 stars Yippee - a classic.......2002-08-11

Hobart Smith was a wonderful musician. This is a great collection.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the recordings of this true master are available!.......2001-10-13

If you consider yourself even a passing fan of old-timey, Appalachian, blues, or bluegrass music, do not pass this one up. Hobart Smith was a distinctive and unsurpassed banjo player and fiddle player, a fine piano and guitar player, and had a much more accessable singing voice than many of the old-time banjo players. Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, etc. were fine musicians, but their voices were acquired tastes, so if you are looking for old-time music with a much more accessable voice, Hobart Smith should be right up your alley. Don't try to pigeon-hole him with Dock and Roscoe, though. Stylistically, Smith ran the gamut of American folk music through to his death in 1965, drawing equally from white and black traditions. Whatever he played, though, he played with soul and energy. As an added bonus, the liner notes are fantastic, providing information about the man, his styles of playing, and the songs themselves.

If you are looking for more music in this tradition, Dock Boggs' "Country Blues," and Roscoe Holcomb's "High Lonesome Sound," are fantastic recordings, but their voices are, as mentioned earlier, an acquired taste (particularly Dock Boggs). Much easier on the ears is Doc Watson, another amazing multi-instrumentalist who played in many styles, and is the father of modern bluegrass guitar. Fans of Hobart Smith should make sure they own his self-titled album, and "Old-Timey Concert." John Hartford carried the tradition of energetic multi-instrumentalists in the old-time tradition through the 70s, 80s and 90s, and "Mark Twang" is somewhat like this album, but "Aereo-plain," and, "Morning Bugle," are also particularly worth owning. Norman Blake, of course, played a lot with the late Mr. Hartford, and "Whiskey Before Breakfast" is a true classic. If you are feeling truly adventurous, try listening to Alvin Youngblood Hart's "Territory," on which the nominally "blues" musician covers a range of American musical styles, old and new, on a range of instruments with a vitality that puts to shame those who play traditional styles for scholarship rather than for the sake of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Unique in popular music.......2007-04-26

The thing about Oldfield is how different his music is from other popular music. Not being a trained musician it's hard for me to articulate but I'll try. Orchestral and sweeping with distinct movements, the music communicates emotion and thoughts without lyrics. I don't know where Hergest Ridge is, but I've traveled there with Oldfields help. A great work of art, and one that finds more inspiration in Bach than Elvis Presley.

I once read that the Moody Blues were the Sistine Chapel of popular music but Oldfield is more deserving of that comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best........2007-01-10

Herbgest Ridge, Ommadawn and the Origional Tubular Bells Hybrid, are the best of Mike Oldfield.

4 out of 5 stars Polar opposite to 'Tubular Bells' shows the same, if not more, talent.......2006-06-14

I can't believe how long it took me to branch out further into Mike Oldfield's back catalogue than 'Tubular Bells', especially after finally hearing 'Hergest Ridge'. It is comparable in pretty much no way at all to his classic debut, other than the two-part format, as it sees him in a very much more subtle musical mood than before. Gone are the quick shifts from section to section, replaced by a very conscious intention to smooth the edges out, to develop one section into another rather than merely switching them in an instant, regardless of the instrumentation involved. The result is a very soothing listen indeed. From the almost impossibly quiet introduction, it builds in density of sound, adding flutes, synth and orchestral instruments that have been constructed in such a way that it is not easy to audibly pick them apart from each other. In terms of genre it's a largely folkish affair, albeit a very grand interpretation. Writing 'Hergest Ridge', he seems to have paid more attention to using chord sequences as a mode for the progression of the long piece, and since he succeeds very well it gives the listener the sense that this is better written than its predecessor. It feels like a more controlled composition. The man certainly had a feeling for the right chords to use, and it is at its most beautiful when the piece strips away to leave only his acoustic guitar. One particular highlight is the climax of part one when the lead electric guitar towers over the dense, lush orchestral harmonies, as if it were leading a charge of sweeping melody.

'Hergest Ridge' is probably just as good as 'Tubular Bells', really, it just forfeits the musical immediacy of his debut in favour of a subtler, more considered approach. It works as a slow-evolving faux-classical piece as well as a 'prog rock' piece, which, upon reflection, is very well indeed

5 out of 5 stars Croom.......2004-12-21

'Hergest Ridge' was Oldfield's quieter, less scattershot follow-up to 'Tubular Bells'. The album reached number one in the UK album charts when it was released but, a week later, was displaced by its predecessor, which had spent almost year climbing up the charts. Hergest Ridge is nowadays totally overshadowed by Tubular Bells, which is a shame because it's my favourite Oldfield album. It's similar in style to the b-side of its predecessor, with fewer little diddly bits and more of a flow; putting on my pretentious hat, it's similar to Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, in that it evokes a day in the countryside (complete with a 'storm'). There's nothing as immediately striking as Tubular Bells' opening piano riff, and it flags towards the end of side two, but I still like it.

Originally the album was criticised for sounding a bit odd, because the pre-grunge mixture of quiet bits and loud bits didn't come through very well on cheap vinyl. It benefits greatly therefore for being remastered on CD, and is very much a headphone experience.

As noted elsewhere this is the 1974 'Mike Oldfield Boxed' remix of the album (and is therefore in quadrophonic stereo, if you have the right quad decoder!). It's a remix in the old-school sense, i.e. Oldfield manipulated the sliders, muting some parts and making others louder.

The two are noticeably different, and fan opinion is divided as to the merits of each. Having compared the two - the internet is a wonderful thing - I prefer this version, and I get the impression a lot of people rate the original simply because it's rare... and original. The choral voices in part two are now audible, whilst the odd soloing during the 'storm' sequence has been replaced. The snare drum rolls which heralded transitions have now gone, and it generally sounds a lot slicker (of course, I'm comparing an MP3 of a battered vinyl copy of an album released in 1974 with a professionally remastered product of the modern age, but still).

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Oldfield - Hands Down.......2003-12-05

Hergest Ridge is my favorite Mike Oldfield album - hands down. This is one of the few albums ever that can bring me to tears just from listening.
Yes the CD is the re-mix version (done in '74?). I've read that it was Oldfield who insisted the re-mix be the official mix on all future pressings. I have the original mix on vinyl LP, but I PREFER THE CD MIX - so don't hesitate to buy because of the mix.
One of my favorite albums of all time - and I was fortunate enough to have Mike autograph my copy when I saw him at an instore performance in Santa Monica in the early 90's :)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD for either listening or meditation.......2004-04-18

This is a great CD, with piano, synths, bass, guitar and light percussion. The feel of the Blue Ridge is wonderfully captured, and there are no weak tracks on the album. It's perfect to listen to and track the melody, or for background music. A great mix of New Age and Americana. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome in Everyway.......2002-02-11

WE enjoy New Age music, and have listened to Wayne Gratz on Narada label for years. We also have several other WG CD's. So when we saw BLUE RIDGE, it was worth a try! WOW - What a fantastic surprise!!! "Blue Ridge" promotes the essence of the area like no other set of music we have ever heard. Wayne absolutely captures the unique beauty of the mountains, streams, lakes, and timeless nature of the Blue Ridge.

Now my problem is finding enough copies of the CD to share with other friends who enjoy this area of North Carolina and Virginia as we do. Wayne Gratz's understanding and love of the Blue Ridge is evident, then he blends this love and the spledor of area in this CD - it IS AWSOME in everyway... mj

5 out of 5 stars Still listening..........2000-11-29

I still have this CD in the 6-CD system in my vehicle since my last review. It's nice to listen to this CD from start to finish. If you listen carefully, there is an underlying theme that touches each and every song, rising stronger in some, than in others. It's a great mix of piano, synthesizer, guitar, and lite percussion. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Music for a lifetime..........2000-01-16

Never have I gotten tired of listening to this CD. Every track is worth listening to. This is rare for any music compilation. The harmonius mixture of piano, guitar, synthesizer, and many other instruments exudes a quintessence of perfect music. This CD is worth every penny, and I recommend everyone to purchase this CD that is interested in this genre of music.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful; wonderfully inspiring.......1998-12-30

Wayne Gratz's music takes me away to imagine, to create, to relax and inspires me as well. The Artist's heart and soul, his passion, is felt by me as I listen to his music. Never before has music touched me in such a soothing fashion.
