5 out of 5 stars "themes & cues savor the romantic that dwells in all of us".......2005-04-12

What a crowning achievement to bring "Reel Love: The Cinematic Romance Album", released by Silva America and featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus ~ conductors are Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine and David Temple director of the chorus ~ one can only expect the highest quality of performances and quench the thirst of all "film-score-buffs".

Sit back and unleash the first disc with composers taking each film score cue in alphabeltical order:

"CASABLANCA (AS TIME GOES BY)" (Herman Hupfeld)
"DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (MAIN TITLE & LARA'S THEME)" (Maurice Jarre)
"EL CID (LOVE THEME)" (Miklos Rozsa)
"EMMA (MAIN THEME) (Rachel Portman)
"GONE WITH THE WIND (TARA'S THEME)" (Max Steiner)
"IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (Dimitri Tiomkin)
"LOVE STORY (WHERE DO I BEGIN)" (Francis Lai)
"PLAY MISTY FOR ME (MISTY)" (Errol Garner)
"PRIDE & PREJUDICE (MAIN THEME)" (Carl Davis)
"RYAN'S DAUGHTER (ROSY'S THEME)" (Maurice Jarre)
"SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (THROW THE COINS)" (Patrick Doyle)

"THEME FROM A SUMMER PLACE" (Max Steiner)
"VERTIGO (SCENE D'AMOUR)" (Bernard Herrmann)
"YOUNG & THE RESTLESS (NADIA'S THEME)" (Barry DeVorzon/Perry Botkin Jr)

Arrangements that soar and then simmer into pure meditation of grandeur ~ classic film music prevails, as orchestration comes to the surface with pure originality ~ one masterpiece after another is long last presented as it should have been, is cause for celebration ~ each cue is a distinctive gift for striking modernism, touching on the transition of the period in this planets history.

Second disc is waiting in the wings are the composers and selections also in alphabeltical order:

"A MAN AND A WOMAN (UN HOMME ET UNE FEMME)" (Francis Lai)
"BRAVEHEART (END TITLES)" (James Horner)
"CINEMA PARADISO (LOVE THEME)" (Ennio Morricone)
"EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (MAIN TITLE/ICE DANCE)" (Danny Elfman)
"EMMANUELLE" (Pierre Bachelet/Herve Roy)
"ENGLISH PATIENT (AS FAR AS FLORENCE)" (Gabriel Yared)
"FINDING NEVERLAND (IMPOSSIBLE OPENING)" (Jan A. P. Kaczmarek)
"GHOST (UNCHAINED MELODY)" (Alex North)
"IL POSTINO (MAIN THEME)" (Luis Bacalov)
"INDECENT PROPOSAL (MAIN THEME)" (John Barry)

"ROMEO AND JULIET (LOVE THEME)" (Nino Rota)
"SUMMER OF '42 (THE SUMMER KNOWS)" (Michael Legrand)
"TITANIC (MY HEART WILL GO ON)" (James Horner)

5 out of 5 stars Always A Brand New Road.......2004-04-03

Always A Brand New Road....And this is what this album is from start to the end. This is again a new way and a great new music from John Mayall.
................this is sure one of his best albums ever !

4 out of 5 stars The come back album.......2001-01-15

John Mayall and Paul Butterfield turned me on to the blues. However, after 'The Turning Point' John has turned out some pretty ordinary albums for a long while. Sense of Place restarted my love of John Mayall's music. I have every album since. There are also some prior albums which are terrific (Life in the Jungle and Behind the Iron curtain for example). Coco Montoya also has some magic moments here - Sensitive Kind and All My Life for example.

5 out of 5 stars Back In Top Form.......2000-04-26

John Mayall's illustrious career has taken him all over the musical map. His creativity was at low ebb, however, during most of the 1980s. He shows himself back in top form with the issue of Chicago Line and now, A Sense of Place. While it is true that he breaks no new ground here that can hardly be expected at this stage in his career. Mayall has always championed the music of J.B. Lenoir and he opens with a driving version of Lenoir's "I Want to Go". That is followed by a rhythmically pounding "Congo Square", in my opinion the best song on the album. "Send Me Down To Vicksburg" features some fine rollicking keyboards. Other good tunes feature a sensitive take on Santana's "Sensitive Kind", the bluesy Texas tune about the lawless "Jacksboro Highway", and the rocking blues of "All My Life". "I Can't Complain" is at once funny and thought-provoking. About the only ones I don't like are a swabby rendition of "Let's Work Together" and "Black Cat Moan". If you liked the Mayall of old, you'll like him once again when you hear "A Sense of Place". There are not many guys nearly sixty (at time of recording) who can still tear it up like John Mayall can.

5 out of 5 stars Candy for the ears.......1999-03-27

A real pleasure to listen to. My main problem with it was it ended too soon. Do yourself a favor and get this one.

5 out of 5 stars As the title suggests..........1998-11-09

This recording is more polished and contains a greater variety of rhythms than the usual Mayall product. It is not what you would expect. The music is, however, honest and sensual. Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars What a great find!.......2007-06-09

I have actually had this CD for a number of years. I stumbled on this artist at a fair (The People's Fair) in Denver, CO. It seems Mr. Lewis had been coming to Denver from Vermont for the fair. This CD was playing on a little player at the booth he had set up and it immediately caught my ear. I chatted with him a bit and he is a really cool guy! Since purchasing it at the fair (Mr. Lewis signed my copy), It has been played many a night at bedtime to soothe me to sleep. I also play it while reading. And it is a great CD to liten to during a rain and or thunderstorm. If you like soothing acoustic music, I say this is a must have. It goes very well with Pat Metheny's solo acoustic CD "One Quiet Night".

5 out of 5 stars Brought Me Home.......2005-07-13

This marvelous recording has accompanied me over the last 10 years & never fails to offer the most authentic serenity & deep comfort. It soothes to the core. It was delightful as a romantic background during a time when I fell in love. I was also honored to make it my choice to play during my wedding ceremony/vows. While utterly relaxing, it doesn't invoke the stuporous/semi-amorphous state that some easy-listen recordings can, but instead rather remarkably invigorates while calming as well. I live on a river; this music generates a sense of flow that I get while watching a current. There's an upbeat quality of clarity & buoyancy to the music which tells you relax it's ok things are going to be well. Very natural. An optimistic homage of renewal; just brings you right back home to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Everything that an amazing album should be..........2002-11-20

I haven't had the chance to listen to the full album yet, but so far my favorite song is "Lapland" with it's beautiful arpeggiated guitarwork and violins... it's really an amazing piece. Spencer Lewis is no newcomer to the music scene, he has many many albums, and this one just keeps it rolling. I highly reccomend this album, as it really and truly soothes the soul and brings a smile to almost anyones face.

5 out of 5 stars A Sense of Place.......2001-12-13

My most favorite CD I own. My husband has been hooked too. It returns me to "A Sense of Place" within my soul. The best time to enjoy is driving during sunset or sitting in your Vermont Mountain cabin enjoy the fireplace and the snow.
Thank you Mr. Lewis for giving me music that helps me find my "Sense of Place"

5 out of 5 stars restoration and relaxation!!!!.......2001-09-25

I found this CD in a country store in New Hampshire. Listening to snippets from two tracks were enough to sell me. The gentle guitar and violin cuts provide a wonderful background for work, relaxation or reflection. I played this as I toured New Hampshire and Maine during the two weeks following the attacks on New York City and the Pentagon. This music was the antidote my soul needed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music.......2003-08-18

I love Tingstad & Rumble together & wish I had everything of theirs. Eric Tingstad on his his own is every bit as good as when performing with Nancy Rumble. I highly recomend this CD to anyone who loves good music, especially Tingstad & Rumble fans.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Tingstand.......2002-10-04

When my dad was just about to put this CD in the CD player, I thought, "oh great, another old person CD." But the more i listened to it the more I liked it. This album is filled with great acoustic guitar riffs as well as piano, saxophone, and flute that just make you feel good! The foresty feeling this CD gives you is a complete sense of relaxation.

5 out of 5 stars The Craftsman Returns.......2000-11-07

So-called "New Age" music is long on atmosphere, but too often floats away for not being grounded. With Eric Tingstad, I never feel like that - I always know where we are, he and I. He's the craftsman, making a comfortable place for us to relax. Whether he's evoking the northwest woods, his garden or the view of a snowfall outside his window, Eric's guitar playing is always firmly rooted in musical tradition, yet his unique voice is unmistakable. He engages the mind and heart like a good storyteller.

This album, Eric's first new solo work since 1984, may seem far removed from his early, impressionistic classical work. But there's no mistaking it for anyone else's music. Eric's steel-string acoustic guitars still ring like harps, with occasional singing lines on clean electric guitar. Overall, Eric blends his guitars like a master painter mixing colors to achieve just the right effect.

Some old friends sat in for this album; the highlight for me was Richard Warner's flute on the lovely Castle by the Lough. Other standouts are the lyrical Monongahela, the hypnotic The Craftsman, and In Moonlight Blue with David Lanz.

An all-guitar version of his classic tune Marigold (the original had no guitar at all) raised my eyebrows a bit, but it works just fine. Eric considers himself a composer first, who happens to play guitar, and I think his music would work well on many different instruments.

Eric's work with Nancy Rumbel is some of the best contemporary music we've got. I'm not minimizing that when I express the hope that Eric will continue to work on his own, once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Like a hot bath after a tiring day !.......2000-03-02

Wonderful string sounds..... Lyrical, but without words...... Soulful, yet energising..... Spirited/spiritful, but nothing illogic........ I don't know where I first heard this exactly.... A guess would be NPR as a "filler"......... There are at least five fine tracks on this...... A recording that grows on one, then grows more.

    2. Shostakovich: Trio No.2 in E minor, Op.67 (1944)
    3. Sheng: Four Movements (1990)

    Album Description

Known for "wildly imaginative, emotionally charged virtuoso playing," Triple Helix was named "2002 Musicians of the Year" and for three consecutive years "Best Chamber Music in Boston" by The Boston Globe. The group's "splendid musical chemistry and virtually perfect dynamic balance" was heralded by The Los Angeles Times.

Each of the three pieces on this recording is written from the core of the composer's heritage or early experience, capturing the heartbeat and cadences of a people in a particular landscape at a particular point in time. The Ravel contains the haunting and lilting qualities of his native Basque music. Shostakovich captures some of the stark and grisly atmosphere of the Nazi death camps, along with other moments in his life during that period. And the Sheng evokes the harmonies and timbres of the Chinese folk instruments of his native land.

This exceptional ensemble was formed in 1995 by three internationally acclaimed chamber musicians: Bayla Keyes, founding violinist of the Muir String Quartet; Rhonda Rider, founding cellist of the Lydian String Quartet; and Lois Shapiro, NY Concert Artists Guild Award-winner. The players serve on the faculties of several Boston-area institutions: Boston University, Boston Conservatory, Wellesley College, and Longy School of Music. Together, the players are Ensemble-in-Residence at Wellesley College.

What a rich voice and gorgeous lyrics. I'm sad that *I* missed out for so long. The only criticism I can imagine for this artist is that her voice and and musical arrangements are sooooo melodic . . . this is music to instantly fall in love with, none of that "growing on you" junk. Enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars blown away.......2004-12-28

The first time I heard Kym was at the National Women's Music Festival in 2003. I was completely blown away by the power of this young woman's voice, not to mention her aptitude in playing guitar. Her voice is like rich coffee and her lyrics are so accessible that I felt like she was singing about my life. She demonstrates the ability to drive a song home in "Trouble" and express her lament about a dying love in "Mercury." Pick this album up...you're going to be seeing more of this woman!
