Editorial Reviews
Hearkening back to first generation electronic-groove music-- Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel-Jarre, Michael Hoenig--the anonymous creator of Zero One uses samples sparingly, relying instead on rich swaths of synthesizer wash, synthetic drum programming, and electronic bass figures. The long, repetitive structures of pieces like "Hell Is Cooling Off," "Trust," and "On the Threshold" support percolating vintage synth sounds and supple beats too light for house, too breathy for techno, and too jazzy for trance. Subtitled "Calculated Adventures in Electronica," the album includes liner notes about French mathematician and astronomer Pierre Simon de Laplace, whose "differential operator" (the binary "01" code) is a key component of modern physics, and whose Nebular Hypothesis helped us understand the Solar System. While this may explain the project's name, it seems to have little bearing on the music, which nevertheless has its own empyrean delights. --James Rotondi

Snow Cones for Pavlov's Puppies.......2007-07-13
Yeah, why not?
With all this technology around us, with music coming at us from all angles, why are ice cream trucks still driving around emitting the same twenty second loop of a glockenspiel playing "Turkey in a Straw"? Why not some new music?
Forget the parents, forget the kids, think of the poor ice cream truck dudes. I bet some new tunes would do wonders for their spirits. I don't know how it is in other regions, but out here we have an epidemic of grumpy ice cream men, which can be a bit of a bummer.
Despite the potential, this is not a boring album. Mike Hearst has undertaken an exercise, which is to write music in the spirit of traditional circus music or ice cream truck music, but make it new and refreshing. Listen for yourself, but I think he pulled it off. It's got calliopes, glockenspiels, the occasional choir, in nice little waltzes and foxtrots, and with enough repetition to approximate the simplicity and feel of the more traditional tunes. But he adds enough variation to keep it palatable. Plus, there are some tasty, sinister undercurrents in these compositions, warbling forays into minor modes, to remind us that the ice cream truck is a parasitic capitalist appendage intruding into the naïve serenity of our playgrounds to extort parents and condition the palates of our children.

Love his style.......2007-06-05
Chill Out Man.......2007-04-21
A Collaboration of 2 Tech-Based Lifeforms.......2007-02-24
This made me wonder: "psy-fi" is completly different in mood and feel then "I Like That". I love the track "I Like That" because it was smooth-flowing, gentle, and what I call "Spiritual Electronica". It also had very cool stereo bass (the bass line travels thru the left-and-right channels with varying intensity).
I don't know if its because they changed labels (From Waveform to Sprialight) or what, but it has a completely changed. Upon listening to this album for the first time, I have to say, I was pretty werided-out.
I kept asking myself: Is this considered music? I couldn't get used to
the repeating short-loops, unusual percussion, strange-sounding electronic sounds and those sharp transistions from a pretty-full decibel loudness
to near silence. After I finshed it, I thought I'd never listen to it again.
The reason I felt this way is because for many people, a change of
anything can make that someone uncomfortable. And the same goes for this
CD and me: You can adapt to the new type of sounds or go back to your old music where you feel confortable.
So I decided to adapt to the new, strange style of music and went back to
a couple songs I liked, for instance "cOntinuum" and "dreamwOrld".
I noticed that in these tracks, there are new kinds of bass sounds that was not used to that seemed to ripple thru the air into my body and high-tech voices that
sounded like they were trying to communicate something.
This album has completly changed the way I look at music.
The more I listened to it, the more it sounded like it was made by two differnet artists formulating different parts of each track. The first
artists has a high-end computer with high-end digital instruments to
create smooth, highly-advanced beats and melodies that sometimes sound
very much like Bluetech (who I love). The other artist sounds like he
(or she) has a low-end, bare-bones basic cheap computer with digital instruments you could buy anywhere on a budget. During the tracks, its sounds like each are taking turns making the track, enduring quick jumps between each artist's creations. While at other times, its sounds like
the two artist's sounds are layered on top eachother.
My favorite track is "casualitY" because it sounds like a war song for robots going into battle and it gets me so amped up! A close second is "transfEr" which I think is the most energetic, danceable and high-tech song. The emotions of the songs sway in-between happy robot sounds to dark and eerie thoughts of a
robot to robots who are "suffering from insanity". And if you buy the CD, listen to Track "Bu_ist" and ask yourself if the melody sounds like the Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack while in Space.
So if you like to hear sometimes clearly-obvious short loops as well as long-continous loops, openly-spaced almost-danceable perscussion, deep
bass vibrations, high-tech sounds plus some cheap-sounding sounds made by two artists, the occasional synth version of a real instrument, and quick
transistions to different "Sound Worlds" within one song, all in a slighty-quiet digital format, then this one is for you.
Its Werid in a Beautiful Way...
Sounds from another world.......2004-02-23
It is not hard to realize that this is a major source of inspiration for Zero One: the music actually sounds as if it was composed by an artificial intelligence which has fallen into a daydream, letting its subconscious conjure up images of robots, geometrical patters, mathematical formulae and digital worlds of lush, symmetrical beauty.
The music of Zero One is like that: ambient, electronic dub that flows like a science fiction dream, as suggested by the title of the third album, 'Psy-Fi'. Compared to the previous albums, 'Psy-Fi' is perhaps a hint slower and more relaxed - the beats are more subdued, the song structure is more abstract, yet often more complex. Still, for those already familiar with the previous albums, 'Psy-Fi' hardly breaks new ground. The soundscapes move in the familiar territory: this is largely 'bass'-driven electronic dub intervowen with odd sounds, abstract patterns, spoken samples and ethereal synths. The effect is both refreshing and meditative.
It is hard to pick out standout tracks. Instrumentals follow each other smoothly so that it is easy to forget yourself and drift into a one-hour trip to a another world.
Zero One sounds as if early electronic music, such as Kraftwerk, was taken over by the psychedelic experimentalism of, say, Shpongle. Still, the music of Zero One is hardly derivative. It sounds at the same time familiar and strange.
Zero One's third album is another great release that should satisfy most fans of ambient, dub, chillout or downtempo. For those already familiar with the previous albums, 'Psy-Fi' is well worth the three years' wait.

Fiddler on the Roof is one of Broadway's great classics. Based on the tales of Sholem Aleichem, the musical tells the humorous and heartbreaking story of the milkman Tevye as he tries to maintain the simplicities of his traditional life even as his daughters grow up and Russia heads toward revolution. Many of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's songs have become touchstones of popular culture, including "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "Sunrise, Sunset." As Tevye, Zero Mostel leads--and at times dominates--the original 1964 Broadway cast, displaying irrepressible swagger and bluster. A young Julia Migenes plays his middle daughter, Hodel, while those who only know Bert Convy as a game-show host will be surprised by his pleasant voice as her suitor. The CD includes two previously unreleased songs but no lyrics. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
The original first time way..........2007-05-09
This is simply THE classic recording of a classic musical. I like the intimacy of the pit orchestra over the inflated version on the soundtrack (as soundtracks almost always are).
If I were a rich man, this is still the recording I would own.

One Of A Kind.......2006-07-28
Zero Mostel was one of those larger than life personalities the likes of whom we don't have anymore. Mostel, Merman, Channing, Bert Lahr...they didn't so much create a role as embody it with their personalities, but they were so huge, the result would be thrilling. Tevye was tailor made for Mostel, loud, comic and ultimately endearing. The kind of role he was a master at adapting himself too.
This recording captures all of that beautifully. The entire cast is wonderful. (Bea Arthur as Yente!!) Though some great actors replaced Mostel on Boadway, Herschel Bernardi, Harry Goz, most recently Alfred Molina, etc. and they created different and more realistic portrayals, it was Mostels signiture role and it's a gem.
A Timeless Classic.......2006-07-25

At first at I played this CD everyday. But after a while this music starts to wear out. It is great music for on the radio or in your car, but it is a little but too superfluous to be a real classic.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Echoes pick of the week.......2000-12-13
If you need to up the BPMs of the usual Echoes soundscape, strap yourself in for the second album by ZerO One, a.k.a. Kevin Dooley. From his San Bruno, California studio, ZerO One orchestrates ambient excursions of a decidedly electronic nature. From the opening "Possibilities," ZerO One establishes his sonic terrain with a repeated spoken refrain, "Your life is going to be different now." ZerO One recalls Dogon, with his sense of playfulness, using vocal sound snippets as signposts in usually surreal sound designs. Take, for instance, "Two." Subtitled "oogie-eeha," that phrase is a hypnotic refrain, popping up, like a virtual Energizer bunny, in the oddest, yet perfectly timed moments. ZerO One uses these effects to delineate his other world of sound, full of trancey beats and shifting textures. Whenever those spoken fragments arrive, it's like a window briefly opened up back into the real world, but ZerO One makes sure you won't want to leave the one he created. protOtype2 is sure to be featured this year on Echoes Techno-Tribal New Year's Eve show.

From Amazon.co.uk
Listening to Colour the Small One seems almost rude, as though you've just crept into someone's bedroom unannounced and read their diary, or even eavesdropped into a private conversation. A lot of this is down to Sia's voice; a soft, intimate, languorous affair that has the unsettling effect of being simultaneously sad and seductive. A couple of years on from her R&B-tinged debut and those classic pairings with Zero 7, the Australian vocalist has come a long way. The music here consists of basic frameworks of rhythm, enhanced by subtle percussion, folky harmonica and nothing more obtrusive than that secretive, melancholic voice. There's certainly room to breathe and Sia unfolds at her own leisurely pace. Opener "Rewrite" works the sad verse/sunny chorus formula to perfection, while "Sunday" turns "Strawberry Fields" harmonium into big orchestral trip-hop. "Sweet Potato" sours the flow, sounding contrived and too like Nelly Furtado for its own good, but "Bully", a collaboration with Beck Hansen, has a sweet melody that belies its subject matter. As cries for help go, this is up there with the best. --Paul TierneyCustomer Reviews:

Mesmerizing.......2006-05-26
I must agree that she doesn't articulate at all and lyrics ARE very hard to understand most of the time. But hey - how can you get annoyed by lyrics if you can't understand them, right? :-) I'm still planning on listening to the songs while looking at lyrics in the nearest future, in the meantime, I can't really criticize or embrace them. However, I find her melodies to be absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing, the best I've heard in a long while, and to me that often matters more than highly philosophical lyrics (and how often do we see those, anyway - from what I can understand of her lyrics, they aren't any less or more pretentious than 90% of what we hear on the radio these days?).
I also don't find anything annoying about her voice (her lack of articulation aside - but that seems to be the trend for a long of singers these days). I think it works very well to create a mood.
Wouldn't buy the album for $20 or so at the store simply because I don't find all tracks equally appealing (thus, the 4 stars), but those that I like, I definitely like a lot and enjoy listening to often.

At times unsettling, always dramatic, unusual, and ultra-musical, From Zero's assured debut, One Nation Under, will appeal to those who enjoy their hard rock technical and full of progressive moments and fluid time changes à la King's X. Fortunately, overall, the quintet of well-schooled players that comprise From Zero don't let stellar chops interfere with songcraft. "Check Ya" is a gem, vocalist Jett's talk-singing is melodic, with the soaring, memorable choruses melding well with the left-of-center tempos that prevail here and in many of One Nation Under's 11 songs. Full of intra-song contrasts, From Zero is seamless in their stylistic shifts, from mellow and moving to fierce in "The Other Side," and moving from a heavy mosh vibe in "Jeer" to the edgy hardcore rap feel of "Horrors." The modern, heavy prog-rock genre once propelled by bands like King's X never found a huge following, though it boasts a rabid one. From Zero, straddling the line between modern metal and prog-rock, and rife with tattoos, spiky hair, and killer, often likeably oddball musicianship, could as easily tour with Ozzfest as they could with Dream Theatre or System of a Down. --Katherine TurmanCustomer Reviews:
4.5 Stars - Rather impressive, definately not dissapointed.......2005-04-11
I am particular in my tastes and its hard to find cds I can groove to without feeling preached a certain message or lifestyle. Korn is too crazy, even though their riffs can be cool; Rap in general is completely narrow-focused on the thug life while rap metal can be the best if done right; melodic songs and slower ones are often too pop and gay to enjoy. However, From Zero has somehow melted all these styles (Korn's nu-metal chugging sonic ways, quick rap beats and melodic choruses) into something worthwhile. Artistic, yes. One-dimensional, NO.
I recommend THIS album if you are interested. From what I hear, their second album blows. So buy One Nation Under first. I bet you'll agree - these guys should have a much bigger following than they do.

A lot of melody shining through the usual heaviness, highly professionally played instruments, and impressing vocals are what offered to enjoy on the cd. Not that heavy, not too poppy, aimed to the masses that appreciate a mainstream melodic heavy rock.
