Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars terrific Meditative music.......2007-03-17

Great album. Easy to get lost in the mood. The best of the three shakuhachi albums I own.

5 out of 5 stars Superb shakuhachi music.......2006-11-14

For some reason I was put off by the negative reviews (that reason is I hate spending $20 on a CD I only listen to once, which tends to be the case if it's an average CD), so I waited until a cheaper copy popped up.

I have to say I really like this CD. I'm no expert in the genre, I just know what I like and I love the mellow sounds of the shakuhachi flute and have been on the lookout for good recordings over a long period of time. I'm a big Riley Lee fan and have many of his recordings and this is probably just as good as any of them and also the work of Kazu Matsui.

There's another flautist, Manose, who I heard live in concert recently. He's from South Africa and his live performance was stunning. In particular, he did a performance with Deva Premal and Miten that he made up as he was going along which was jawdropping beautiful and probably sold him dozens of CDs on that night. It's hard to find all of his CDs here on Amazon (and some are better than others, check out Suskera and Dhyana Aman) he's worth checking out. Also, if you havent got Riley Lee in your collection, you're in for a real treat.

This music is perfect for relaxing, I would imagine meditation also if you like background music for your meditation and for a massage therapist (or other worker in the healing or other fields that requires soothing background music).

As another reviewer said, you're getting 140 plus minutes of excellent music for $10. I'd say that's a great deal.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Tai Chi Music!.......2006-11-04

I use this CD when I'm teaching class, and it's perfect. The music is soft and doesn't have a familiar melody to distract students. It's very soothing, and very asian.

5 out of 5 stars An Eckhart recommendation.......2006-09-03

I am a huge fan of Eckhart Tolle. He has this music playing as the opening to some of his live talks. I have seen this on video. He has this music recommeded on his website.

This music is hauntingly beautiful , as another reviewer said, without alot of overlay to get caught up in.

Perfect for unwinding, playing in the background to make any activity a meditation.

Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-07-27

I am no expert in the music of the Shakuhachi, but I thoroughly enjoy this CD. I find the music to be relaxing and peaceful, though I'm not sure if people actually 'meditate' to this type of music (if I remember correctly, the performance of the music is more of a meditation exercise than the listening, but I'm no expert in meditation either). The pace is slow, and the music can easily set the tone for a nice relaxing afternoon, or for winding down at the end of the day. If that's what you're looking for, this CD may be for you.

Album Description

Shakuhachi master, Masayuki Koga, is a fascinating Renaissance man: a master musician, composer, producer and engineer, trained in law, with a penchant for philosophy. His music reflects those many aspects of his personality and his skills.

Born in Japan at the height of World War II, Koga followed his father's footsteps in learning to play the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute that is associated with Zen Buddhism. Although secular music has been performed on the shakuhachi for a hundred years now, it still retains its distinctly Zen aesthetic. It is capable of very subtle tonal variations and expressive nuances, all of which Koga explores with his full spirit, emotion and intellect.

Koga's unique contribution has been to expand shakuhachi music, playing not only the traditional music of Japan, but blending it with Western influences. His musical training was traditional, receiving his master-teacher degree from the Tozan school. Subsequently, Koga became the youngest member of the award-winning Ensemble Nipponia.

In his mid-twenties, Koga withdrew from the orchestra to broaden his musical horizons, experimenting with jazz and free form styles. Koga moved to the United States in 1972, continuing to perform widely. To further spread the understanding of his tradition in the West, Koga founded the Japanese Music Institute of America.

Eastwind: Japanese Shakuhachi Music is undoubtedly an impressive production. The packaging includes a stunning rice paper booklet. The selections are carefully chosen titles from three of Koga's previous releases, Beyond Time and Space, The Distant Cry of Deer and Moon at Dawn, a perfect compilation for the audiophile interested in shakuhachi music.

Masayuki Koga is a profoundly talented artist, devoted to his instrument. "The quality of your life is reflected in the quality of your sound. I can sometimes fool myself, but I can never fool the sound. I am the shakuhachi and the shakuhachi is me."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like no other Shakuhachi.......2000-12-11

Masayuki Koga's powerful shakuhachi sounds will bring you face to face with your unadorned true self. They are nature made manifest in all it's complete force and abundance. At times sweet and serene, at other times like a gale blowing right through you. Koga stands out above all the masters, incorporating and transcending the traditional. This is the first and last in Shakuhachi music--the real thing.

Ray Brooks came to wide prominence as a musical thinker with his book, Blowing Zen: Finding an Authentic Life, which autobiographically chronicled the physical and spiritual journey of a young British engineer meeting up with Zen and the Japanese shakuhachi flute. Hollow Bell is Blowing Zen's sequel in a way, Brooks's attempt to make the book more palpable for readers who wondered what the blowing sounded like. As shakuhachi recordings go, this one's a delight, a series of musical explorations that take advantage of the end-blown flute's tonal ranges--which all stay in the midregister and never proceed faster than a glacier. Between pacing and the airy overtones that Brooks manages, he makes Hollow Bell an instantly purposeful recording, a set of historically important tunes and improvisations that center the ear and lay down a calm that's not so much quiet as it is a quickly enveloping sound environment. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deep and soulful music.......2007-07-18

Listen to this music while you read Blowing Zen: Finding an Authentic Life, the same musician and author. The book will take you on a journey of surprise, humour and inspiration, while you listen to the takented renditions of the songs discussing the book. The shakuhachi is a deep, soulful sound from Japan. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightenment in one tone.......2001-04-13

Read the book Blowing Zen, then bought the CD. The music unfolds for the listener with each track. I love that about any good recording. I would have like to have owned the CD while reading the book. The sounds of the shakuhachi definetely take you to that quiet place.

5 out of 5 stars best choice.......2000-05-23

This disc brings together a number of core pieces of the shakuhachi. It is easily the best recording out there by a current player. Many of the masters are now dead or they simply are just too old to record a quality product anymore. It is a pleasure to hear this beautiful sound now being carried by Ray Brooks. Buy it, it is a core holding in our time.

5 out of 5 stars Hollow Bell.......2000-05-23

The "honkyoku" Zen music that Brooks plays really does nudge you toward a quieter, more contemplative state of mind. Try listening to it while crammed on a subway or walking a busy street - really interesting to experience beauty and tranquility during downtown rush-hour.

Album Description

Visualize the most tranquil garden there has ever been... completely secluded and calm. It's filled with exotic flowers, plants, birds, and a small brook. Sounds of bubbling water and birdsong intertwine with the quiet tinkling of wind chimes, harp, temple bells and gentle Shakuhachi flute melodies. The natural sounds and gentle music creates a healing, stress-free environment perfect for yoga, massage and relaxation. A bestselling classic!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very Dull.......2007-02-21

I think I am being generous with one star here.
David and Steve excel in some genres but should stay away from pure environmental efforts. The waterfall/stream sounds on this CD are loud, harsh, and overdone. The sounds are monotonous and just go on and on and on until you just can't stand it anymore. I have a fair number of music/nature compilations so I know what I'm talking about...this one becomes just plain annoying after a while. There is nothing soothing or serene about it at all.
If you are looking for the absolute best quality nature recordings blended with music, seek out any of Dan Gibson's work and go no further.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've found for getting to sleep.......2006-06-16

I have purchased about a half dozen relaxing/meditative CDs, have a clock with "relaxing sounds", and listened to many more CDs. However, Garden of Serenity is the ONLY music I've found which calms my mind at the end of the day and sends me off into a quick, peaceful sleep. It's almost pavlovian - I hear the first four notes and I'm instantly relaxed. I highly recommend this as a sleep aid.

5 out of 5 stars Very soothing and relaxing the whole way through.......2003-06-25

As a massage therapist I was a little worried about buying this because one reviewer was annoyed by the chimes - but they aren't really annoying in the least. I not only use this for my own clients, but I will put it on for myself when I receive one. I'm going for Volume II.

5 out of 5 stars Garden of Serenity.......2002-07-12

My tri yoga instructor uses this in our sessions. It allows you to breathe with the music at your own pace and is conducive to working toward slower, fuller breaths. The music is very tranquil.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it, Love it!.......2000-05-05

This CD is great for meditation, realaxation, unwinding. I use it with my clients when I do visualization exercises with them, and they love it, too. I am excited to see there is a Part II, and am ordering it NOW!

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Stephan Micus is a unique explorer of sonorities, wandering the world to study instruments from a host of heritages. His work is marked by a simultaneous interest in the instruments' distinctive properties and original uses and his own vision. For the nine-part Garden of Mirrors, Micus has added to his instrumental palette with bolombatto and sinding, two lower-register West African harps with attached tin rattles. These are used here to accompany vocals or are joined in various configurations with a complement of ethnic flutes--including Japanese shakuhachi, Balinese suling, Egyptian nay, and an Irish tin whistle--as well as steel drums, and Micus's voice is overdubbed to a 20-member chorale on three tracks. The results are often hypnotic, combining hyper-resonant instruments with static five-tone scales and chanted micro-melodies.

On "Passing Cloud," the shakuhachi wafts over a slowly pulsing field of four steel drums and two sinding, while "Gates of Fire" uses bowed sinding to add introductory menace to a stately processional orchestra of percussion, steel drums, and a dozen overdubs of the various flutes. On "Flowers in Chaos," a single high-pitched suling expands to 22, arriving like a flock of exotic birds. It's not just the cross-cultural content of these instruments that makes the music distinctive. Their sounds are close to nature, whether evoking birds or rivers, wind or rain. Micus's wordless singing never mimics a single culture; the pieces are as apt to suggest Native American music as the South African townships or India. In Micus's meditations, technology can turn the one voice into many, or merge diverse elements into a united dreamscape. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars African Hypnosis.......2003-01-31

Garden of Mirrors is playing now. It is light and lyrical and more than a little hypnotic. Based on a variety of African flute and percussion instruments, most of the tracks build up on themes that morph and weave but never seem to reach an end. It reminds me of Balinese Rindik music in that. You can come in the middle of a song and not know it is the middle. It is light, but not without substance, it's just that the music does not force itself on you. It is easy to listen to and easy not to listen to. When it catches your attention, it has much to say. But it doesn't demand you listen. Micus's overlaid chanting and chanting is very well done, ethereal, textured, and occasionally driving. I don't know if he is actually singing in a real language, but the texture of what he sings conveys the meaning and emotion without the need for intellectual understanding of the words. It is good music to work to.

5 out of 5 stars leaving space.......2001-08-30

I happened to hear this album on the radio late in the day while I was driving around Mendocino CA - need I say that the effect was extraordinary! I had never heard of Micus before, but having ordered the album and listened to it again, I realize that what attracted and affected me was the space in the music; Western music is almost totally involved with making as much noise as possible, with leaving as little silence as possible. Micus' music is as much about the space between notes as the notes themselves. If this is a concept that makes sense to you, you might want to give this album a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Micus...But Typical.......2000-09-29

I have no idea how I ever learned of the existence of Stephan Micus' work, but it was probably sometime back in high school when I "got into world music." My early experiences of his music were stunning, and in his music I found great depth and beauty. However, as I heard more and more, a certain sameness was apparent in all of his music. It's all ethereal, and it's all melodic (in a sense...except the "...Stones" album, in which he hits rocks or something), but I've found that barring differences in instrumentation, the *music* is often quite similar in theme and feeling. That being said, this new one (with yet another great ECMish cover) is just as strong a work as "Darkness and Light," but perhaps - in my opinion - not as strong as "Athos" (I *love* that one; what the *heck* is a sattar and where can I hear more of that thing!?). If you're a fan of Micus, by all means purchase this CD. If you're looking for an interesting, indefinable, "world music" listening experience that none of your friends know about, buy this album. If you're familiar with his earlier works and are expecting something breathtakingly new, this is *NOT* the album to buy. Still, it's better than most New Agey, "world music" recordings out there on the market.

5 out of 5 stars his best so far.......2000-09-24

I have now had a chance to study Micus' most recent release, and can only speak of it in terms of superlatives. In some respects it is standard Micus fare--which is to say vaguely folk-inspired "New Music" with the artist supplying all musical parts and the pseudo-word vocals; and yes, you get the usual array of exotic instruments (Micus plays over twenty instruments at a reasonable level of proficiency, including several flutes and rather strange stringed instruments, hammered dulcimer, steel drums, etc., etc.). Moreover, the work on this album still exhibits perhaps his single most obvious flaw: how to satisfactorily end a piece. But... This is a truly superb concept album, on a par with Dead Can Dance's "Spiritchaser," though a bit less commercial sounding, and thankfully lacking that group's occasional lapses into pretentiousness. Each piece on the cd reflects one mirror-image or another of Micus' (and our own?) psychological garden, with extremely satisfying results. There are precious few artists who can portray emotions like regret and solitude, much less come up with something that is actually thrilling to listen to, but Micus can. And lest I give the impression that this is a sombre album--well, it isn't. Two of the three vocal pieces are his best yet, apparently using West African models to weave together some of the most inspiringly positive musical sounds I have ever heard--real pure, honest, joyful stuff. The only thing I can think of at the moment to compare it to emotionally is the famous Requiem by Gabriel Faure, which manages to celebrate the delivery of the soul to a higher place in a manner devoid of religious baggage and mere ceremony--that is to say, with dignity and respect for what is truly good in us. Needless to say, I would very highly recommend this album to anyone who needs their music to be not only honest, but emotionally insightful.
