Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great forgotten rock album.......2007-07-16

I have loved this album for years, my father has it. I didn't think I would ever find it on CD, but here it is! It's rather expensive, but worth the money as you will not find this in record stores. This album has lots of famous rockers playing with the two lead guys - George Harrison, Ron Wood, Mick Fleetwood, Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and others. If you are a fan of classic rock, particularly "deep album rock" - songs that were not top 40, this is a must have item!

It's interesting because the songs reflect what was going on in 1973, but they could have been written today.

5 out of 5 stars "We're makin' a smokin' album up the road...".......2007-06-08

Back in the mid-1980's, an interview appeared on NPR with Mylon LeFevre, (hough the interviewer was apparently from a Contemporary Christian Music media), where Mylon outlined some of his history in rock and gospel.

In the midst of it was a charming story he told, that goes like this. "Alvin (Lee) and I were working on this record, 'On the Road to Freedom', and took a break, and made our way to pub nearby. We weren't there long, when, of all things, in walks George Harrison. I told Alvin to introduce me, and he says, 'No - he's me neighbor and all, and I'll meet him someday, but..' 'Course, you know how the English are, all formal and all-that, so I just hopped up off my barstool, leaving Alvin behind, walked over, stuck out my hand, and said to George, 'Hi, I'm Mylon LeFevre, and I'm here with Alvin Lee, and we're makin' a smokin' album up the road; you wanna come by, hang out, play some, and do some blow...?' George grinned at me and said, 'Yeah, sure; great, man! No one ever asks me to play, 'cause of the Beatle thing..' So, he came over, and it was around the time he was writing stuff for Dark Horse, and I just loved his song 'So Sad', so we recorded it on '...Freedom'."

I did my best after that to scour used record stores for a copy of the album, all to no avail. Finally got a hold of a copy some 5 years later, and found it to be as extrordinary as everyone had been saying all these years.

Tasty, tasty, tasty....and as representative of the same devil-may-care attitude that brought Mylon off his barstool to greet George Harrison. What a great record!

5 out of 5 stars Fallen Angel, can you hear me?.......2007-04-02

I got this album in late 72, when a friend of mine, who worked for
Columbia Records in New Jersey stole a couple of copies, and gave me
one. This when I was in my rip-off the rip-off phase. Since then
I've bought both the cassette, and the CD. Not to appease the Karma Gods,
but because this CD is that good, from the deceptively simple first prime
cut, "On the Road to Freedom", through the suffle boogie of "The world is
Changing", and the slide guitair slide of "So Sad", to the opening
dominant chord opening of "Fallen Angel", and the folksey "Funny", and
then going into Mylon LeFevere gospel roots of "We Will Shine", and
"Carry My Load", then the Alvin Lee rockers of "Let them Say What they
will", "I can't take it", and "Riffin", and the just pure guitair
forte of "Rockin till the sun goes down", the combination of Alvin Lee
and his fabulous talent, and that unmistakable voice of Mylon LeFevre
combined to make one album for the ages, I would strongly suggest that
you find a copy of this album, tape, or CD and listen to it, if not
outright purchase it.

5 out of 5 stars 100 years after.......2007-03-16

Better than any 10 Years After CD. Mylon has always been one of my faves as well. The quality of this CD was much better than my album.

4 out of 5 stars Music I had 20 years ago.......2007-01-30

I had this on album 20 years ago. I have been looking for it on CD for may years also. Was glad to finally find it.

For those of you who enjoy the music, as it was sung and played during the Civil War, this recording is a "must!" J.A. McA.

5 out of 5 stars Living history.......1999-07-31

So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title (DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

Decades after its conception, Harry Belafonte's enormously ambitious project has come to a rewarding fruition with the release of this lovingly produced and beautifully packaged collection. Between 1961 and 1971, Belafonte sought to create a comprehensive document of what he calls "African-matrixed music": "African rooted, Africa as origin, evolved from an original African form." The rough timeframe Belafonte follows begins with the arrival of blacks in America in the early 17th century and ends at the dawn of the recording age. Yet this five-disc set (with a bonus "making of" DVD) amounts to so much more than a musical history; it is, instead, a detailed sociopolitical history of the people who created this music and a journey following the evolution of black culture from the time that the diaspora left Africa for the New World.

Disc 1 offers tribal chants, shouts, and spirituals while the second disc explores the slavery era through the Civil War. Disc 3 looks at postwar sounds both urban and rural while the fourth disc crosses into the next century as the street cries and mountain hollers morph into folk ballads, gritty blues, and minstrel shows--the roots of popular music as we know it today. The final disc includes songs of work and songs of worship, the practical tools of survival for African Americans in troubled times. The sounds found across these discs are faithful re-creations featuring a large cast that includes the likes of Belafonte, Bessie Jones, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and Joe Williams. The lovely 140-page hardbound book includes extensive notes and provocative essays, as well as stunning photos plus artwork by Charles White. To be sure, this is not easy listening and those looking for your basic "roots music" collection will be disappointed. Rather, this is really a fascinating exploration of the roots of roots music. --Marc Greilsamer

I am an average white guy in his forties who purchased The Long Road... when it first came out in'01. Please read the other reviews for facts, details and editorials... I am here to warn you. If you are prone to being emotionally effected by beautiful, soul piercing harmonies performed by a tribe of professional and basic folk then avoid this musical journey. If you hate tears of awe rolling down your cheeks every time you experience a number of songs especially from disc 2 and 5...while I'm listening, my eyes well up just in anticipation of hearing "We look like Men of war" or "All Round' de Glory Manger"... then steer away. Many of these tunes play in my head especially during particularly tough days at work. Play it LOUD or avoid at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars American history, not just black history.......2005-12-28

My boyfriend gave me this collection last year. He's a musicanwith a deep love of all roots music. I'm black; he's white. We listened to this together and we both found it to be a revelation.
If you are looking for field recordings, this is not the collection for you. The sound is not quaint and tinny (although I love those recordings too). Instead, this is a collection that shows how 'black' music (that is, music from the African Diaspora to America) changed and grew over time, and produced sounds that we still hear today. The selection ranges from Louisiana Creole (the ancestor to today's Zydeco) to Civil War tunes (contrary to the information you'll find on the web and other places, not all black Civil War music was in dialect, and the marching songs are rousing in their patriotism and pride), to good-time music (the ancestor to hip-hop, R&B, and modern pop). The most disturbing piece is the slave sermon, which should probably be played in every classroom in America during discussions of the Revolutionary War, which is followed by a worship service similar to the types held by slaves in private, and acts as a good counterbalance to the prior piece.

My boyfriend and I found ourselves bonding over the Civil War music, as he is an avid bagpiper and very much into Celtic culture. We talked about the roles of Irish and black soldiers in the Civil War and what they had in common in terms of not being viewed as human by most of society. We also enjoyed hearing people like Brownie Magee, not on a fuzzy old recording, but in a living, vibrant fashion.

People who think that 'black music' is only for black people must also think only Italians should listen to opera and that Jimi Hendrix wasn't really a rock musician. This is _American_ music, and as such, should be in the collections of anyone interested in American history, 20th century music, or African-American culture. American music has had a variety of influences, and these recordings could help younger people and even a lot of adults become interested in music history, just as did 'Down From the Mountain'. In many ways, this music is more 'roots' music than anything in ' O Brother, Where Art Thou?', because it truly tries to go back to the source. As an anthropologist I might quibble over the inclusion of the African section without qualifying it as possibly being ahistorical (we don't actually know if those exact songs were sung in the time before slavery, but it's likely that are similar ones contemporary to the time), but other than that, I'm very happy. For once we have a music collection that does not focus solely on slavery and misery. There's a lot of joy and hope here, and a strong sense of reliance, which is perhaps the best trait that Americans have as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars Bigger than just a "black thing".......2004-02-26

There are lots of reviews or word of mouth on this CD box set that, quite frankly, focuses on all the wrong things. To pigeonhole this box set a "must for black families" vastly understates the raw power and broad appeal of this collection. This box set is bigger than that; it's much more than just a quaint time capsule for blacks to listen to. It's fun, entertaining, and can go toe-to-toe with any of the best new music releases out there right now.

This music is basically the foundation of ALL popular music celebrated in the Western world today. Rock, Top 40 Pop, Salsa, Gospel, Blues, R&B, Hip-hop, Country, Bluegrass, they ALL owe an immeasurable debt to the music and culture brought over to the Western hemisphere by African slaves.

The collection starts with African chants and tribal music, and some of the instrumental and vocal arrangements could easily be from modern pop music. As it moves from the African black music experience over to the early Black American music experience, it's easy to hear how African music evolved in America to become the modern American pop, rock, hip-hop and R&B music we know today. People always mention how African music is the roots of pop, rock, soul and Afro-latin music, but this collection really drives the point home when you listen to old tribal music and hear beats and vocals that sound uncannily like those heard in today's modern music genres. There is no modern popular genre that doesn't owe a great debt to African-based musical sensibilities, and although we hear it said all the time, this box set actually illustrates the point better than a million articles and academic speeches ever could.

This collection is more than a history lesson or a source of pride for blacks. That almost makes it sound cold and academic. This collection has WARMTH and personality; it's great entertainment and just plain incredible music. Listen to it regardless of your race, political orientation, or ideology. Buy it and enjoy it because you love good music and want to hear the roots of it straight from the source, not just as a source of racial pride or as an acedmic study in music history.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Black Family.......2002-06-13

The Long Road to Freedom depicts a history of America's Africans in a masterful collection of music.

5 out of 5 stars One that slipped through the cracks.......2003-05-15

Great album that seems to be off the radar for no good reason. He's got a soulful, distinctive voice and a great backup band. Can't ask for more. Every time I put this CD on I'm struck by how it holds up, and it's already over 10 years since its release. Where is this guy now?

4 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart redux?.......2003-03-10

This album of well-crafted songs features a singer whose voice and songcraft most resembles Rod Stewart to this listener's ears. When you give him a good listen, Rod Stewart comes from a very country/folk place, stylistically. I'm only a casual listener, having picked this up on a lark, so further review might bear lengthier comment. Good CD, though, nice songs.

          5 out of 5 stars Essential Purchase.......2005-10-27

Great to see all these positive reviews. Like one of the other reviewers, if I had to keep only one album from my collection (about a thousand CDs, several thousand records), this would be it. I originally bought it in 92, then had to buy a new CD as the old one wore out (really - never seen that on any of my other CDs). Why is it so wicked? Combination of superb musicianship and sampling, tunes that run the full gamut of emotions and feel from lump in the throat soulful and moving ("As We Come To Be") to super funky ("Apparently Nothin'" , "Move On") and amazing vocals from Carleen Anderson . In short, every track is a belter. The tragedy of it is that this is the only album made by the Young Disciples. Add it to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Before you buy anything else..........2004-11-19

I think this is absolutely the BEST album of the last 15 years!!! I have more than 750 CDs and 300+ LPs and if I had to pick just one piece of music out of my collection to have on a deserted island this would be it. Road To Freedom has a level of depth that you haven't seen in a Soul/R&B album since Stevie Wonder's or Curtis Mayfield's work in the mid to late 70's. The fact that this group is British doubles the amazement for me. Don't get me wrong; there are a lot of great albums out there. It's just that I feel this stands far above anything else. Keep in mind that I bought this album 11 years ago and I still feel the same way about it!! I mean it! This album is that good!!

          5 out of 5 stars A Modern Masterpiece.......2002-09-27

I find myself reviewing this masterpiece after having owned it since it was originally released. I am also listening to it at the moment which probably spurred me to review it. Where does one start with music on this level? I wish that this wasn't the only individual project that they did but there again how could they top this effort? The whole album is an absolute joy to listen to and if you have never heard it then you should really give it a listen. On the other side of the pond (in the UK) it is generally acknowledged as a masterpiece.

All roads on this CD lead to the absolute gem that is the 15 minute Freedom Suite. It has everything, powerful lyrics, excellent groove, rap..... But having said that this is a real album to explore that set a standard that hasn't really been surpassed since 1991.

          5 out of 5 stars Hell Yea..........2002-03-17

A great album from the beginning til the end. Cop this out if you can find it. Just got myself a copy and i have a feeling its gonna be a quite a resident in my CD changer.

5 out of 5 stars who spoiled me?.......2005-07-02

Today we have constructed a village world where in each of us wonder what corner he/she locates/occures...Me from the 3rd world is probably some where on the other side of the moon that is not visible to earth dwelers...but from that hiden side I have been hearing Chris singing that used tyo make me ask who is he any way? A spritual crusader? aging star? cult brewer? a reformist? an educator? an healer? Can't say but then the days came when in Vancouver I was at the peak of my youth listening around the clock 'man on the line...lady in red is dancing with me....turned me into a split person....What the hell this singer wants his listeners to feel and do? He can not mainpulate any ones spirit...to the extent that a lady in red be watched dancing deep in a winter night in your drawing room...and when you turn on the lights you find nothing....! What review should one study to know what is all this about? My own feelings that Chris aroused knowing him not meeting him never say but of the fact that music have power but all this power is activated transmitted controlled and manipulated by the very singer....Now U folks tell me what for a musician or singer be manipulating some ones feelings soul and or spirit? Just to prove that he is the only one the best???But again it is against all the theories and practices of Freedom....nodoubt he who would like to manipulate others influence others must him/herslef experienced all this...and to get free from such a status he/she must have been opting to target others people........but how come such person be hitting his target on the other side of the moon? This is charisma? non with a zinger or music man it is some thing magical? Black magic or white magic or other magic? But magic is itself nothing but the state of being influenced leting some one to influence you...No problem when he get a few more years older then one day as a senior citizen having done with all his stuff, rums, drums he will come in clear to every one.............!And then the jury and the judge will tell me too "oh Mohammad you were spoiled by both Chris and Jenefer Rusk..."I known that For years and years I wanted to go and live in Vancouver because every one would make me believe then that B.C is beautiful...and when I availed the very chance to enjoy the beuaty of BC there emerged Chris signing the love songs...........It means to enjoy nature one got to let Chris accompny too? What the hell finally came out of all this ....he did not let me stay Mohammadan or Richard the LionHeart....but a lover of mankind.........till I could exercies push ups....now in 50's I feel he spoiled me alot...doing no push up ...he would suggest just watch others doing it....but I can not forget that the sweet lord is watching............O!Chris ....you and Jenefer Rusk has soiled me alot...Happy Canada Day to you two.......

          1 out of 5 stars Copy Protected.......2005-07-01

This is no notice that this CD is copy pretected, that means it is useless to me as i make my own CDs and have an ipod. I do not pirate.

I love the CD but I will now have to buy again on
          itunes.

4 out of 5 stars Wanted: Movie Soundtrack.......2004-05-14

From the first bars of the first song, you get the distinct impression that Chris De Burgh wants to do a soundtrack for an epic movie. "When Winter Comes" evokes visions of Dr. Zhivago, Gone With the Wind, The Ten Commandments or other such major cinematic event.

Similarly, "The Road to Freedom" and "Snow Is Falling" bring to mind movies such as "Roots", "Braveheart" and "Love Story".

He uses his distinctive voice and music to bring stories to life in dramatic form.

Someone, somewhere, PLEASE give this man a movie score to do!

"The Words I Love You" and "Five Past Dreams" are the standout tracks on an album full of rich, melodic and beautiful songs. The Caribbean and Latin based "What You Mean To Me" and "Read My Name" are interesting variations on the theme.

An epic album of grand scale.

          4 out of 5 stars 30 Years On........2004-04-21

"The Road To Freedom" marks De Burgh's 30th year in the music business, and it is a welcome return to form. "Freedom", his 14th studio album finds him tapping into what he does best, tell dramatic tales of love and loss, war and courage, the tensions between family members. This album is more in the vein of "The Getaway" and "Into The Light". The songs hold together very well, with little filler at all. This release stands above his last four uneven albums--2002's "Timing Is Everything", 1999's "Quiet Revolution", 1994's "This Way Up" and 1992's "Power Of Ten". It begins with an almost Les Miserables/Phantom of the Opera feel with the dramatic and somber opener "When Winter Comes" which melds into "The Road To Freedom" and then to "Snow Is Falling". The opening trio is reminiscent of his earlier trilogies found on "Into The Light", "The Getaway" and "Crusader". His first single, "The Words 'I Love You'" is a great lead-off with it's uptempo beat and lyrics examining the relationship between a father/son and religion/faith. "Five Past Dreams" contains a musical nod to the classic "Lady In Red" from 1986's "Into The Light" and "The Journey" references "Don't Pay The Ferryman" from 1982's "The Getaway". De Burgh also uses Latin influences on "What You Mean To Me" and the excellent "Read My Name". Also evident is his appreciation of other adult contemporary singers like Vanessa Williams because the verses on "Here For You" sound exactly in the time signature and tone of her 1992 hit "Save The Best For Last". All in all, De Burgh fans should enjoy this release as I think it's probably his best since 1988's "Flying Colours". However, new fans should start with "The Getaway", "Spanish Train & Other Stories" and "Man On The Line".

4 out of 5 stars A long awaited return for the ultimate storyteller.......2004-03-29

What can I say?? It's been too long since Mr De Burgh's last release - his "Best Of" Albums have not been enough to keep us satisfied. So along comes "Road To Freedom"... the first few bars of the tell-tale guitar tells you we are on the road for a welcome return for the master storyteller, packed with fantastic new music, guaranteed to get your feet tapping and a smile on your face, whilst leaving you strangely melancholy. Although not quite as emotion-packed as his earlier releases such as "Crusader", and with a distinctly more upbeat feel, it still reaches your soul as no other artist can.
Grab this album, you will not be disappointed. But spend the time listening to it; it will truly immerse you.
