      2 out of 5 stars Be Careful.......2006-11-07

I feel that you should take these reviews with a grain of salt. My opinion of Loves Secret Domain should not influence your decision to buy it or not. Most of the reviews written with regards to LSD, give it a high level of praise and claim that it changed electronic music. I disagree. I love the music Coil has created over the years, but will not praise something just because of who's name is on it. Peoples ideas and inspiration fluctuate leaving the possibility for releases that vary greatly from one to the next. As far as changing electronic music, you should ask yourself who are these people to say what changes musical direction, and how do they measure such a thing. The Orb, and Aphex Twin are two examples of people that could've been given credit for the same thing,(and yes,at the same time as LSD)1991. In my opinion Aphex Twins editing and musical restructuring offered a different view of rhythem, and engaged the listener with something they weren't used to hearing. The Orb on the other hand, create a wall of sound that continually moves and changes, and at times almost sounds as if it were a living, breathing piece of music,(whatever that sounds like?). With LSD I hear the attempts of a contemporary sounding album. I do hear the Coil I love in areas, but for the most part I hear sounds that are timestamped where you can place them in a certain period of time in musical trends very easily. The Orb's earlier stuff is also that way somewhat but seems to have weathered a lot better. If you are a person who only listens to "dark" music, or any one kind of music for that matter, for the sake of keeping inside the boundaries of some imaginary sub-culture, then you probably won't tread too far from the path. But if you are interested in progressive music that challenges the ideas of the time, and engages the listener, then there are Coil albums before LSD that do a much better job (Horse Rotovator),and plenty albums after LSD,(Astral Disaster). And speaking of "the most accesible Coil release", how many Coil fans listen to Coil because they are interested in hearing some sort of widely enjoyable musical trend? Aren't the best moments the ones that disturb preconceptions, and beckon the listener to rethink their ideas of musical experience? Overpraise leads to people trying to rip other people off. I was lucky enough to only pay $37.00 for LSD(more than double the cost of a brand new CD at full price). But I see it for sell now at something like $113.00! Get real. I also purchased Summer Solstice for $24.00, and when it arrived it had an instore price tag from the place I bought it from for $6.00. So my point is that if you like something, thats fine, but when you praise it so much that it results in sellers ripping people off, it hurts others who may be interested in hearing it, but pass on it because of the ridiculously high price. I give it 2 stars, but that is just for Coil Releases.

      4 out of 5 stars wha.......2006-02-15

aphex had not yet discovered hi creativity until 1991 and LSD?
ha ha....richard james was already there inthe mid to late '80s..

5 out of 5 stars This IS 5 star music.......2005-06-16

I can't really add to the other reviews. Again, this album was/is very influential on dance music of the 90's, it contains a luxurious blend of sounds, has one of my all time favorite songs on it ("further back and faster"), and is definitely one to listen to if you decide to 'get into' various illegal substances. Note that I am not endorsing taking illegal substances.

If you buy this, or have already, make sure you pick up a copy of "Unnatural History III". There is a track on that called "Meaning what exactly?" which was originally recorded as an intro to the track "Things Happen", and left off for some reason. I slotted that song after "Teenage Lightning I" and before "Things Happen" on my Mac and it sounds quite nice where it belongs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mind Expanding music........2004-10-21

Just as the clever title "Loves Secret Domain" (LSD) states, this is a mind expanding release of electronic music. Weird samples, techno beats and Video game sounds collide with catchy synths and trancelike rhythms. I dislike most techno, and don't really favor the current EBM trends in Industrial music, but this album is one of my favorites of anything associated with those genres. Coil is a innovative group which is comprised of some former members of Industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. However, compared to other post-Gristle projects, I think that they really took the adventurous spirit and went somewhere with it. I do not think that (former Gristle leader Geneis P'Orridge's) Psychic TV's "Acid house era" material compares evenly with albums such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds Producing Altered States.......2004-05-05

This is in my opinion Coil's most accessible work and definitely my favourite. A great introduction to this unique British band of experimental noise. This album in particular was highly influenced by the Acid House sound that was popular in Britain at the time. That being the case it has been referred to as the "dance" album. However, do not think for a second that this is just a regular dance music album. In fact many of the songs are quite - well, surreal. From the opening assult of sound samples which form the opening "Disco Hopital" to the very distorted vocals and beats from "Teenage Lightining" we are made aware of the experimental nature of this album. The emphasis being on stuttered samples and sound.

According to on-line literature this is also the first recording of Coil's to be recorded in their trademark "sidereal sound." Basically this means sound in 3 dimensions. This is definitely headphone music. The highlight of the album for me was "windowpane" which reaches a drugged intensity among the stuttered background, swirling samples and pounding rhythm. The singer himself seems caught up in dionysian fervour. Indeed, there are a lot of intricacies with this album and a close listen to it will pay off.

This is a must have for any fan of experimental electronic music.
