Product Description
I first met Jaro Czerwinec at the recording of Cowboy Junkies' legendary Trinity session. We finished playing the first take of Misguided Angel and Jaro ran over to me, very excited. "Who are you man? It's like your my long lost brother"

I have had a house gig in a hotel in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, for about nine years. It is a very functional gig, led by a fabulous singer named Doreen Smith. Many great players perform here, and this is one of its attractions to me. One evening Witold Grabowiecki showed up as the piano player. At the end of evening when we were saying goodbye he laughed and called me "his brother."

I am always looking for excuses to bring all my long lost brothers and sisters together so when the Guelph Arts Festival approached me to see if I wanted to put together a performance, I naturally thought of a family reunion.

I knew that Witold was very much into meditation; he attends week-long retreats of silence in Brooklin, New York. And when I spoke to Jaro he said, "that he really liked droning on his accordian these days."

For the performance we decided to use long deep breaths as our guiding rythmic principle, and then adopt very simple harmonic ideas upon which we would improvise.

These four pieces are the result.

One uses the five note scale D, F#, G, A, C#.

Two is A minor.

Three is based on the F lydian scale.

On a Ground features Jaro and Witold improvising over a constantly repeated bass line adapted from the music of the 13th Century mystic, Hildegard von Bingen.

    5 out of 5 stars Mood(y) Music.......2000-05-11

Ever had one of those days where it was rainy and bleak and you just wanted to sleep the world away? But you were kind of enjoying yourself--reveling in your own morose thoughts and self-pity? This is the soundtrack for that day! Randal Prater, the lead guitar player and poet laureate of Creeping Myrtle, is an excellent musician (check out the weird Gothic scream on Valentine, like a succubus' wail); and his writing is thoughtful, funny and more full of angst than Goethe's Sorrowful Young Werther. He's got a great woeful voice, and isn't afraid to let it crack with emotion, or whisper with introspective asides, or snarl in anger. I don't like comparing bands to other bands, but I get the same kind of pleasure out of this album that I did listening to Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil back in my college days. My favorite song on the album is Step In The Sun. (Go listen to the whole thing on www.doldrum.com.) It starts out very slow and slithery, then builds to a funky-maudlin jam session. The lyrics are haunting: "I'll make you sigh as we float down the stream/As we float down the stream/To the end of your dream." The song conjures the image of lovers floating down a river on their backs (like poor Ophelia in the painting by Delaroche), hand in hand, relentlessly pulled toward some mysterious end, but finding succor in each other's company. How many bands these days invoke apparitions like that? Sadly, they're few and far between. I want more from Creeping Myrtle; I can't wait to hear (and see) what they summon next.

5 out of 5 stars I was blown away by the Mystic Upbeat sound "Of What May Be".......1999-04-30

I have followed Creeping Myrtle for some time now. I am really impressed with the way both their lyrics and sound has evolved. I really enjoy how original their music is. I really enjoy the entire album. But "Of What May Be" just mesmerizes me.

5 out of 5 stars Seattle masters of atmosphere's first album a success.......1999-04-26

Having prided myself for years on the inability to predict the future, I find I must now humbly admit my accuracy from 1995 in forecasting the success of a band I knew only from a free tape snapped up at the last minute from the front counter in Orpheum, a record store in Seattle, Washington: Creeping Myrtle. At that time, I wrote, "Fans of our very own Jessamine, My Diva, and Sky Cries Mary can add Creeping Myrtle ... to their lists of local bands having little to do with grunge and everything to do with ecstasy." Anchored by the singing, guitar playing, tape manipulation--and insistent talent--of its front man, Randal Prater, the band has since then gone through a few personnel changes, managed to hang onto its name, and built logically on the promise of its E.P.s, _Corduroy_, _Peculiar_, and _Bead_ (soon to be collected on a CD called _Kindergarten_), to produce a full-length album worthy of a daring prediction. _Ode to the Urchin_, on Doldrum Records, 12 tracks long, with an accompanying Web site and little fear of MP3, represents both a culmination of its gentle, atmospheric (but electronics-shy) aesthetic and a new beginning for its concision, rhythmic experimentalism, and--dare I say--songwriting. Whereas before, the band seemed content to establish a mood and allow the songs to meander along a progression of luscious harmonies, now it shifts tempos, employs cadences, and inserts dissonant chords with the confident logic of a seasoned ensemble building on previous work. Prater's ethereal, echoing voice and metronomic strumming guides each song through its changes, as drummer-percussionist Gary Hunt and accompanist Peter Sawtell provide gentle meter and ambiance. If you live in the Northwest and want the perfect soundtrack to rainy afternoons at the end of the millennium, or if you simply want to imagine living under such moody conditions, _Ode to the Urchin_ is the disc for you.

      5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!!.......2005-12-10

Following hot on the heels of her previous collaboration with koto player Mara Purl (the superb Koto Keys), pianist Marilyn Harris joins up with yet another consummate musical professional (wind instrumentalist Phil Feather) on Winds on Ivory, a recording that is in the much the same vein as Koto Keys, but is also completely different as far as its literal sound. What I mean by all that is that, like Koto Keys, Winds on Ivory is a serene and peace-inducing album, full of meadering yet purposeful musical improvisations, conveying a flowing, almost stream-like, sense of slow movement that is one hundred percent unforced and completely natural. It's a damn amazing album, to be honest. How Harris finds a way to make music so beautiful and so naturally calming, yet so devoid of cliché, maudlin faux sentimentality, or new age glitziness or superficiality is beyond me. To do this twice in one year on two different albums featuring two different accompanists (and who play such different instruments) is quite the achievement.

Once again, as he did on Koto Keys, Mark Wolfram handled production, mixing, mastering duties as well as playing some keyboards (mostly sampled instruments used for sparse coloring effect of subtle accompaniment to one or the other lead instrument). This guy can really mix an album. There are some nature sounds scattered here and there and the amount and their placement in the mix is textbook - I mean it is flawless. Trust me, if Winds on Ivory were released on a major label, it would be HUGE! Ah, the pitfalls of being an independent musician.

Owing to the assortment of wind instruments that Feather plays on the CD's ten tracks, the songs themselves vary more than you'd expect them to, but the overall "feel" of the album is not just coherent but works almost on the level of long-form ambient. Weird, huh?

As she did on Koto Keys, Harris shows remarkable technique in her control of shading and nuance, playing in a sparse and minimal style yet also filling her notes with feeling and grace. Another similarity to her previous collaboration is her unselfish attitude and the way that her and Feather frequently share the spotlight, playing with each other, instead of trading off solos. I would have to say it is this aspect of the music that makes it so enjoyable and also so unique.

Don't bother asking which are my favorite songs on the album. It'd be like deciding between lobster, crab, shrimp or scallops for yours truly (I love 'em all!). However, from a purely subjective viewpoint, I like the sound of Feather's oboe d'amour ("Reverie" and "Sanctuary") and his bass clarinet ("Sky Blue Waters" and "Quiet Forest") best, although the man is no slouch on alto flute, Native American flute, pennywhistle or recorder, either.

This is among the loveliest and prettiest albums I heard last year. Between Wolfram's layering of nature sounds (along with his other instruments), Feather's soulful wind instrument playing, and Harris' evocative piano work, Winds on Ivory is ideal music for late night relaxation, as accompaniment to massage, or you could just sit quietly and drink it in while savoring a glass of wine, a cup of tea or whatever suits your "down time." I suspect that if you are seeking a few moments of peace and serenity, you will find that this CD will more than satisfy you. I give it my highest recommendation, especially for those who like their acoustic instrumental music draped in true gentility and filled with a deep sense of calm.

“SLEEPING ON THE PLANE,” IS A TANGIBLE EXAMPLE OF THE WAY LOVE INSPIRES ARTISTS TO CREATE. SONGWRITER/PAINTER, JOANA SMITH, WHO SOME SAY IS A FEMALE DAMIEN RICE, had been struggling for two years to write another song, until she fell profoundly in love. Then, for the first time, she was plunged into such an intense period of inspiration that many of the songs were written two-at-a-time, and the whole album was penned in the length of time it takes to go on a long plane ride.

5 out of 5 stars Wine and candles.......2005-04-24

I love to listen to Jo Smith's new cd especially after a long day at work. I light some vanilla scented candles in my room, pour myself a glass of wine, and am able to easily unwind. Little Seed is my favorite song. Having heard about this up and coming artist is great because most of my friend haven't heard of her yet, so they love receiving this CD as a gift. I also checked out her website at www.josmith.net and found it so interesting to read about her. Listen and read and be inspired.

5 out of 5 stars Joana Smith really took me on plane ride!.......2005-04-22

I saw Joana Smith play in Boston, and now that I am in Germany, I am so happy to have her CD not far from me at all times. Also, it wasn't until I listened to the CD a few times that I realized how prolific her work is. Each of the songs on the CD is individual. Words cannot express the beauty of her work. This is an awesome CD!
By the way, this would be an excellent gift.

5 out of 5 stars At long last..........2005-04-18

Joana Smith's newest release is fantastic. Having seen her perform in person (and loving every minute of it), I thought I knew what to expect when purchasing this CD... but I was wonderfully amazed. More so than I expected! Something about that voice just transports me from the very first note. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The stars are brighter.......2005-04-14

Last Sunday night I had to take a long drive up to New Hampshire. I had Joana's new CD, so I popped it in as I left Boston. Immediately I was staring up at the stars through the windshield, wrapped up in my world accompanied by pianos and cello and before I knew it I realized that I had missed my exit...by about 35 miles! Joana's style has many faces in this album; she is sometimes passionate, sometimes trembling, sometimes singing with ambient guitars, sometimes the piano is so old fashioned that you could swear you were caught in a time warp to Rachmaninoff in 1900. A great album to sink your head into during personal times
