With a blend of New Age sensibility and performances from world-class international artists, Windham Hill's second
Solstice collection is perfectly suited to the time of year for which it's named. There's substantial variety on this disc, from the ethereal guitar and flute of Angels of Venice's "After the Harvest", to the choral piece "Silgugu Isiphambano" from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to the up-tempo, jazzy "Tres Curmins" from Lani Hall, to the upbeat "Alegre Vida" from Yomo Toro. There's a fine contribution from Buckwheat Zydeco that evokes a carnival atmosphere, and "Lei 'Awapuhi" from Ledward Kaapana, who infuses the piece with bluesy touches of slide guitar and bent notes. This is music to open your windows and air out your house to. --

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Hooray for Hollywood!.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party that I did for work. It really lent that dramatic mood that I was looking for to usher in the theme as people entered that room on the first day after it was decorated.
Please also see my review for the CD Beautiful Hollywood.
Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

Customer Reviews:
Time Capsule.......2006-11-30
The voices and instruments, like the songs, are straight from the mid-19th century. If you want to be transported back in time 150 years to a wonderful parlor performance of Foster's songs, this is the album to do it. The voices are marvelous and trained, and one must imagine that the strict phrasing and style are what one would have expected at the time. The cheap upright piano is perfect.
But the one perfect moment for me is the ONLY good extant rendition of "Was My Brother in the Battle?". Accompanied on a harmonium or pump reed organ, if this song doesn't tempt a tear, you simply aren't a romantic.
Very highly recommended.
Unexpected.......2005-11-26
Quality of this recording is fantastic! Performances are superb! However, they don't fit being an example of Foster's music and times. I was expecting banjos and a Mississippi Sound - therfore, very, very disappointed in this CD and consider and a waste of money. Be sure to LISTEN to a few examples to match what you are looking for and what the CD offers. I, unfortunately did not listen before I bought. I rate this low only because my expectations were shattered. This IS a fine CD if opera styles are ok for an example of this southern, 1800's composer's work.
An album to treasure.......2004-09-23
The landmark Library of Congress album, now on enhanced CD. Years
ago, I went on a six-months field assignment to a remote area of
Africa, where I could take only what music I could carry in a vest
pocket. I chose a tape player and two albums: a recital by Perlman
and this album on tape, and was content. If you love American
music, sung poetry, beautiful singing and deeply moving musicality,
this is an album you will treasure for a lifetime.
A classic recording of American songs.......2004-08-22
What can I say that hasn't already been said below? I only wanted to reiterate how wonderful this album is and assure the reader the sound is spectacular on CD. This is a live recording, and intentionally so, as the idea was to create a "parlor" experience as these were parlor songs to be sung by family and friends around the old upright piano. I especially liked the comment about the upright piano which, indeed, does croak and clank throughout the performance adding a note of "authenticity" without becoming obtrusive.
If only Ms. DeGaetani had graced my parlor...
The sessions of sweet silent thought stirred.......2003-11-22
I have never heard such unadulterated extraworldy sound emanate from two human voices and what would otherwise be firewood (the period instruments played by Gilbert Kalish). It stirs profound patriotism and a deep sentimentality for our early days when a civilized people pined to find virtue by examining its own body-- the north and the south, the small town, the simple flag, and the beauty of gentile manly and womanly love expressed through equisite song. There is no other music I would rather hear 'when summoning up the remembrance of things past.' The ghost of the early American parlor will prick your skin through these simple hymns and you may escape for a moment our troubled and busy times.

LOVE IT!!.......2004-09-27
I love listening to this album while cooking, hanging out with friends, having supper, etc. etc. I never get sick of it. It's just such a fun album!!! If you like St-Germain' Tourist album and Moby's first album you'll love this one.
can't get bored of it.......2004-04-08
This is the only album in my collection that I listen to on a regular basis without ever getting bored of. I FF one or two tracks generally, but this is one heck an album that goes down great at a cocktail party. In fact, I've never, until now, bothered to write anything about an album. highly recommended.
Bright and bubbly like a wine cooler.......2003-07-19
Even better than Volume One - "Spring". Vintage Chill "Summer" is very breezy and upbeat. Chill music with a decidedly Latin feel to it. Recommended for everyone who enjoys listening to music while at the beach or relaxing in a hammock in the backyard. Best tracks - "At the Beach", "Summer Fun", and "Roadster". Also enjoyed the Theivery Corporation song "Liberation Front", it is a good change of pace. Can't wait to hear Vintage Chill Fall.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD!.......2007-01-03
This collection pulls together many of the great songs from this very short time of musical history. This particular volume, though, is the best of the set. I did not get the others due to the tracks they include.
Psychedelia and the Summer of Love.......2006-11-04
There are songs on this CD which will take you right back to the days of Flower Power, peace signs, Love In's and chemical alteration (smile). I was disappointed in a few of the tunes included - not what I would call TOP 40 at all - obsure ones. There were though, enough to get me to purchase it. I simply burned it to my computer, and deleted the few that just didn't reach me. So - if you have a hankering for remembering these days (which I will always have - and not the chemical alteration phase - just the memories of living for something larger than yourself)... buy it.
nostalgic collection.......2004-10-26
For some, the summer of 1967 was a special moment in time. Briefly, optimism and idealism combined with youthful enthusiasm to create a feeling than change was happening all around and that anything was possible. Songs from this collection fairly represent some of the feeling of that time.
For those who lived through that brief moment, this music will likely take you back. It is pleasant nostalgia, just before violence and drug commerce made all of that change into an ugly thing. The songs are light and hopeful. For those who are interested in that time, a listen to the music from then is revealing. However, these songs are, for the most part, pretty light weight. Some are quite forgetable, and a few have aged so poorly as to make one cringe to hear them now (Eric Burdon's "trans-love airways" for example).
So this is a collection for those who want a pleasant spin down memory lane or who just want to examine that moment in the past. Others may wonder why anyone would listen to this simple stuff. Musical style has grown and progressed way past these pleasant numbers now.
If you want it, you've got it!.......2004-05-06
This is a high quality compilation for those who really dig this genre of music. Personally, I bought the CD just for the two gorgeous songs "San Francisco" and "Love is All Around." Either one of those would be worth the price of the CD, but there are lots of classics included. A few of the tracks don't seem to stand the test of time particularly well, but may be worthwhile to those who have an historical interest.
EXCELLENT! FLOWER POWER AT ITS BEST........1999-06-20
The maturity of the senior tracks(San Francisco, Love is all Around, San Franciscan Nights, etc),and the gloss of the junior titles(Reach out of the Darkness, Lazy Day, Sunshine Girl)combine to make a great CD. You can almost smell the flowers and practically feel the warmth of the sun on your face.

I first heard of Hikari Oe many years ago when he was featured on a news program. I was so moved by his story, that I went out to buy his CD. I fell in love. I am so amazed that this man who can do nothing for himself, can write such beautiful music. He is simply amazing. This is a wonderful cd from a wonderful man. Don't miss it!!!!

Third in the Summer Solstice series, Sun Dance is an elegiac meandering into longer days, warmer nights, and the kiss of festivity that lingers for the season. Featuring pianists Jim Brickman and Liz Story, harpist Lisa Lynne, guitarist William Coulter, and ensembles such as Angels of Venice (covering the Rolling Stones' "As Tears Go By"), Sun Dance dips into the well of New Age talent, spilling forth a liquid dream-time soundscape. George Winston and Keola Beamer collaborate on the Hawaii-inspired "Shaka Slack Key," and Will Ackerman's finger-picked "Just Dancin' Like Fools," elegantly supplemented by violin, bass, and percussion, is a lovely ditty of light and willowy grace. A word of caution: beware the lazy-making properties of this collection! It's quite likely that listening will bring on a hankering to nod off in the sun or ditch that big meeting for an impromptu berry gathering. --Paige La Grone

Buy This CD. Now........2004-06-01
This CD is one of the few I've bought in the last few years deserving of my $16. Really, it's extraordinary... I had never fully realized the potential of New Age music until I heard this. I've listened to it until I know every note of every song; by all rights I should be heartily sick of it. But "Just Dancin' Like Fools" remains one of my all-time favorite songs.
This CD captures the spirit of a season in a way I've never heard done before. The richness and fullness of the music in all of the tracks is quite incredible. Very frankly, anyone who doesn't like it can suck it up. (So buy it, and like it.)
Guitars and pianos to enhance the summer spirit...........2001-09-07
I was expecting this to be maybe just a sampler, and was pleasantly surprised to find it a very well put together compilation where the cuts seem to blend in perfect sequence. I found Will Ackerman's "Just Dancin' Like Fools" with the violin blending with Ackerman's guitar and the vocal ending especially fitting the idea of celebration of the solstice. Lisa Lynn's "Cancion de Amor" featuring her on the celtic harp with cello and percussion backup also seemed especially fitting with the theme. Other highlights were "Shaka Slack Key" (first time I've heard George Winston on the steel string guitar rather than on piano), Jim Brickman's "Circles", and David Arkenstone's "Reflections on the Pond". Heck, I even enjoyed Jay Beckenstien's soprano sax on "Summertime", even if the Gershwin tune is old hat in comparison with the rest of the CD.
The music is OK, but I have something to say about the sound.......2000-05-08
The reviewer who gave this CD only one star is quite right, the older Windham Hill recordings are better, not only artistically but also soundwise. Although this CD may appear to sound pretty good, to me it does not! It has been compressed up to the hilt. For non-technical listeners this means that all the dynamics (the difference between loud and soft) have mostly been taken out. Therefor it sounds unlistenable to me. This is not the kind of music one should compress the living daylight out of, that is for Rock & Roll. Hey, it might sound good in your car, but I listen on a home system worth (more than) a couple of thousand dollars. I think most people listen to this kind of music on a good system. If this trend continues, I am sure I will no longer buy "new" new age, and stick with the older, more dynamic and interresting recordings (whether 16, 20 or 24 bits: what's the point if the dynamic range is less than 10 dB! ). Windham Hill, please tell your recording and mastering engineers to treat this great music as classical and not as R&R, thank you!
Accoustic Music.........2000-04-05
I wasn't sure how much I was going to like this CD. I bought it for the David Arkenstone track, which I hadn't heard. Turns out to have a very accoustic feel to the whole thing. It's mostly stringed instruments and piano. Quite cool as background music. Not really to sit and listen to attentively, but for when you're doing stuff, this is great to have on. Angels of Venice do an awesome version of "As Tears Go By", and track 4, "Shaka Slack Key," which you can hear in the song samples above, is almost worth the price of the CD. On the whole, the CD doesn't really stand out, but it's worth getting.
Just Relax!.......2000-03-24
I have listened to this in my car and while I am cuddled up with a good book at home. It is a great mixture of musicians. It helps clear your mind and really relax. It is a favorite of mine.

Customer Reviews:
awesome baritone.......2002-05-01
This is a great CD to me because I play Baritone of course. But this is a great CD even if you've never even heard of a Baritone before. This music will get your attention no matter who you are!
A Euphonium player's essential CD.......2002-03-13
Plain and simple- if you want to here what a euphonium player should strive for, this too-good-to-be-true CD is it.
What a wonderful performance by both the soloist and band........1999-09-11
The euphonium isn't as well known as other brass instruments, and I think Michael J. Colburn will help it to be better known with this CD. Mr. Colburn brings out the beautiful sound of this instrument. I recommend this CD for anyone who likes to listen to virtuoso solos and wishes to hear a great euphonium player.
Great Euphonium Playing!.......1999-01-15
This is really great CD! Michael Colburn is a great performer. I could listen to this over and over and over again...
An excellent CD played on the best of Brass instruments.......1998-12-17
This is a CD that one can listen to countless times. The virtuoso playing and beautiful tone produced by Michael aptly display the characteristics of the euphonium. The selections are for college and graduate level players, as well as the occasionally "gifted" highschooler. A must hear, and a must buy.
