Customer Reviews:
One of the best CD's out there!.......2007-05-10
All ages and musical backgrounds love this CD. The Baltimore Consort are amazing. One really feels one is in a smoky pub in the 14oo's getting plastered with England's best musicians! Don't miss "Pox on You;" my kids absolutely howl with glee at the "bass fartophone." I haven't heard laughter like that come out of my little boy since he was a toddler. "Sweet Sir Walter" features one of the guys singing in a falsetto that sweeps lustily down into a Tim Curry-esque (think Dr. Frank-n-furter)gutteral guffaw of delight. So outrageously fun one forgets one is listening to Renaissance madrigals.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-25
These bawdy catches and ballads take us on a journey to the taverns and other social gathering places of the the real 'Merry Old England'. Some of us may be mildly shocked by the directness and earthiness of the text, but everyday life in the 17th century was much more 'down-to'earth- and forward. These texts-some blatant and other euphemistic-fully explore the spectrum of humor from the sly smirk to the back-slapping guffaw.
The singing of both ballads and catches belongs to a long and venerable tradition in England. The natural habitat of the of the catch was the tavern, while the ballad was known in a wider variety of social settings as well as the stage. By the end of the 17th century, ballads were collected by connoisseurs of popular culture and published in anthologies. The main source for this recording, 'The Catch Club, or 'Merry Companions', was printed in 1762.
A quote from the catch-philosopher (of 'Come, come let us drink') is offered by the Baltimore Consort: "...wine and good cheer will in spite of our fear inspire our hearts with mirth..the time we live, to wine let us give, since we all must turn to earth...."
This is an excellent collection of songs; quite interesting and varied. The instruments are played skillfully, and the voices, for the most part, are good quality. However, as with all 'folk-like' songs, the diction is not always clear, and that is very true of several of these on this disc. The female voices were more difficult to comprehend much of the time. The text is printed out, so ultimately familiararity will make them easier to understand. I do like the disc, and think that it needed to be done.As to a previous criticism concerning the fact that it wasn't 'true' barroom singing. Of course, it's not!!!If it were, you would not understand any of it!!!!!Enough said.
Prelewd to Postlewd.......2005-09-28
The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of older, bawdy (for its time) music possible.
The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could. This is particularly true of the songs on this disc, where many are derivative of anonymous jokes and stories, and much of the music is likewise folk-tune and anonymously composed.
Some of the songs can be rather shocking. As Mary Anne Ballard writes in the accompanying notes, 'We must remember that in the days before indoor plumbing and pooper-scooper laws, everyday life was of an earthier flavour than it is today.... The men of the singing clubs and the ladies of stage poked fun at themselves and their companions with wit, pleasantry and contrivance.'
The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. However, some well-known composers are represented among the pieces here - Purcell, D'Urfey, Aldridge, and others.
The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Mark Cudek (cittern, guitar, recorder and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (recorder, viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute), Chris Norman (flutes), Webb Wiggins (tambourine and 'virginals'). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.
Added to the regular consort players are the Merry Companions, including Peter Becker (baritone), Alexander Blachly (baritone), Paul Shipper (bass, belch-canto), and James Weaver (baritone).
One more addition includes a guest artist, Lorenzo Labbrobacio, playing of all things, the 'fartophone', a rather mysterious instrument indeed. Labbrobacio defies identification on the internet other than references to this disc, and so the mystery deepens.
This is music that is interesting, truly fun to listen to, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it a joy both in musical and humourous tones.
Sounds like they're singing Christmas carols.......2004-11-09
This recording is professionally produced - perhaps too much so. I've been in a few taverns and heard my share of bawdy songs. I am used to hearing them sung with gusto, with a wink and a naughty smile, to the raucous and enthusiastic appreciation of the audience. The songs on this CD are performed entirely straight. The results are technically competent but fail utterly in conveying the spirit and fun that make this genre worth listening to.
A sly and rollicksome good time!.......2002-11-29
On this recording, the Baltimore Consort and the Merry Companions are full of fun, both blatant and tongue-in-cheek. Soprano Custer La Rue and the instrumentalists of the Consort are joined by a quartet of classical male singers (Peter Becker, Alexander Blachly, Paul Shipper and James Weaver) with quite a theatrical sense of humor. The two groups take turns presenting ribald tavern songs of merry old England, interspersed by light, catchy instrumentals listed in the credits as the "Prelewd", the "Interlewd" and a "Fresh Ayre". Drinking, sex and other bodily functions are both celebrated and ridiculed in songs that are cleverly worded and enthusiastically sung, and in at least one case, accompanied by a mysterious instrument (reminiscent of P.D.Q. Bach) called a "fartophone". Especially amusing are the "catches" or rounds, and the new meanings that result from the staggering of words when several different verses are all sung together. It sounds silly, and is silly, but that's the point of it all--celebrating the "earthier flavor" of life 17th and 18th century England. My copy came with a parental advisory sticker stuck fast to the case, but my mother didn't seem overly concerned, and in fact enjoyed it too when I played it for her! For more fun Renaissance vocals, both salacious and serious, try "All At Once Well Met: English Madrigals" by the King's Singers, and "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain, Germany" by the King's Singers and the Consort of Musicke.

One of the best cd's I've ever heard. You can not go wrong buying this!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic, gorgeous compositions! Villegas is incredible!.......2002-10-14
Being into a lot of this 'Nuevo Flamenco' stuff like Strunz & Farah, Govi, Jesse Cook, Andres Laprida, etc., just to name a few, I had not even heard of Luis until I 'discovered' his CD at a 'Borders' outlet store here in Cleveland for five bucks new (what a sin, huh?)! I liked the description of his music on the back of the CD, so I bought it, and was blown away by the quality of his playing/music and the quality of the recording (I listen on very revealing Magnepan/Magneplanar speakers with McIntosh equipment, so I can truly hear quality or lack of). His stylings and compositions are absolutely first rate, and the interplay of percussion on this release is just perfect! This is world class, beautiful, passionate latin tinged acoustic/nylon guitar at its best, and Luis takes it to the next level!!!
Nuevo Flamenco at its Finest.......2001-08-23
Luis has successfully crossed the line from live performer to accmplished recording artist. The vocals in his latest recording add a new and welcome dimension. If you liked Cafe Ole, you will find this the perfect addition to your collection of Nuevo Flamenco.
Another imagination activator..........2001-07-22
Not as good as Cafe Ole for road trips...and a few vocals that I didn't really like. (Thank the maker for CD burners.) Some of these tracks are nice and romantic...which is probably what caught my ear and prompted me to purchase. Not "hard" new flamenco...more laid-back.
I only give this one to people who liked Cafe Ole or any of the Govi works.

Album Description
Percy Faith was the master of distilling the best of melodies and in this collection from 1958, Percy rescues us from the images that Victor Herbert melodies tend to evoke - the operetta, and the "erstwhile lady singing (belting out?) Herbert tunes at the piano." With this in mind, Percy's early stereo spectacular brings us the best of the Victor Herbert tunes - with the grand voice of the orchestra to bring out the beauty of each song - twenty-three Victor Herbert songs in this collection! (Bill Halvorsen)
Album Description
Full Title - The Columbia Album Of Victor Herbert/And His Orchestra. Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These 2 albums on 1 CD were originally released in 1958. 23 tracks. 2003 Collectables reissue.
Customer Reviews:
Inauthentic Herbert/authentic Percy Faith.......2006-09-03
If you love the Percy Faith orchestral style, you will certainly
enjoy this typical example. The disc is full and the selections are numerous and varied, including characteristic pieces, operetta
excerpts, and even a couple of excerpts from one of Herbert's
grand operas.
BUT - if you're primarily interested in the music of Victor Herbert, then the advice has to be to avoid this seemingly tempting item. The combination of anachronistic arrangements, altered harmonies, and orchestrations foreign to anything Herbert would have imagined or countenanced ends by falsifying the charm and character of Herbert's music. In essence it's more like "1950's Fantasies Loosely Based on Certain Herbert Themes."
disappointment.......2006-08-14
This is a very poor rendering of the music of Victor Herbert. I am very disappointed in it and would not have ordered it if I realized that there were no vocals.
"music giants come together ~ Herbert & Faith".......2004-02-09
Now we have something that only Percy Faith could tackle "The Columbia Album of Victor Herbert", composer Victor Herbert has all the elements that Mr. Faith was looking for, and what a workout the award winning Percy Faith Orchestra has in store for them, look at the result...pure satisfaction and then some ~ "TOYLAND" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, Percy's arrangement comes from the heart and weaves a magic spell over the listener ~ "MARCH OF THE TOYS", once again the signature arrangement comes to the surface of each cue that Mr. Faith records, very stimulating performance ~ listen to this cue and visualize the toys coming to life ~ "A KISS IN THE DARK" and "KISS ME AGAIN", once again the magic prevails with soft and sweeping strings, The Percy Faith Touch comes to the forefront ~ and Percy was always there to record the music whenever the time presented itself, and it is here and now.
Two great giants in the music world Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and Percy Faith (1908-1976), brought together by Columbia Records and originally released in 1958 (C2S-801), received wonderful reviews from the music critics. This is an historic event for Faith fans, a double LP that has all the ingredients is now released on one single compact disc ~ with all the sonic clarity you could ask for.
Great job to all who were involved in bringing this to listeners of fine music ~ very impressive with all original liner notes and recording cues intact. This has to be in the top five of Faith's re-issues, keep them coming, cause there is an audience out there crying and craving more of the same...gotta love it!
Total Time: 73:46 on 23 Tracks ~ Collectables 7565 ~ (9/16/2003)
Herbert in good hands with Faith renditions.......2003-10-08
Percy Faith, the easy listening music arranger and conductor, pays homage to composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924) and in doing so offers us a remarkable recording of Herbert's oft-forgotten music. Faith interprets Herbert's music with his signature lush strings and sound orchestral arrangements that provide a light buoyancy to the compositions. Especially good are Indian Summer, Spanish Serenade and Gypsy Love Song. But all tracks are impressive and offer good testimony to Herbert's compositions and Faith's tuneful arranging. This is one of the better Faith re-releases from Collectables to date.

Paul O'Dette has done more to introduce the lute and its extensive repertoire to modern ears than just about anyone. On Robin Hood, he plays a collection of Elizabethan ballads that were arranged for solo lute in the 16th century. Although the names of the composers of most of these pieces have been lost to us, the music is of a uniformly high quality and stands up very well next to the selections by known composers like William Byrd and Peter Phillips. O'Dette plays the selections on three instruments: the lute, the orpharion (a flat-back, metal-strung cousin to the lute), and the cittern, (a metal-strung instrument that is plucked with a quill rather than the fingers). The metal strings of the orpharion and cittern have a longer sustain than the gut strings of the lute, which gives the pieces played on them a sound similar to that of the modern steel-string guitar. O'Dette is renowned for his scholarship, which he demonstrates in the meticulously annotated liner notes, and for his formidable technique. But as powerful as his head and his hands are, O'Dette never forgets that it's the heart that makes these delightful works music rather than just a series of well-played notes. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Elizabethan Ballads set for the lute.......2005-08-13
Paul O'Dette is unquestionably the finest performer on the renaissance lute who is recording these days. This CD is a compilation of 24 assorted ballad settings, from a wide variety of sources.
I like this CD somewhat better than its companion disc "The Royal Lewters", primarily because the highlights of the CD are tracks 13 through 17 featuring music of William Byrd. Along with John Dowland, Byrd represents the top of the food chain for Elizabethan composers, so this CD has some real compositional meat to it. The title track, "Robin Hood", is offered in a setting by one "Mr. Ascue", and it is quite a nice version.
O'Dette also performs 4 tracks on the orpharion, and 4 other tracks on the 4-course cittern. The timbre of these instruments takes some getting used to, but it serves for a nice contrast to the more mellifluous tone of his lute.
I believe that this CD and "The Royal Lewters" are available as a 2-CD set called "Lusty Gallant"; I would recommend the double-disc for a purchase rather than the two individual CDs.

Great for One Song.......2007-04-05
I purchased this album for the "My-ya a Hee" song and am glad that I did. However, the rest of the music is not up to that standard.

Customer Reviews:
Why Can't the English?.......2004-09-10
This disc has the same content as was heard on the original Broadway cast album. The score is still enjoyable. the performances here are disappointing. Chita Rivera sounds tired and seems to be forcing her voice. Peter Marshall wrestles with his musical segments and lacks the charisma that Dyke Van Dick brought to the role. The kids are all terrible here, and several wrong notes slip through in the orchestra. Why is it that the British just can't do justice to American musicals??
a fine recording.......2003-03-11
This reissue of the London cast of BYE BYE BIRDIE is most welcome to any cast-album collector. Though I do prefer the Broadway cast (available on the Sony Broadway Masterworks label), the cast here is quite excellent.
Chita Rivera reprises her role of Rose Grant; partnering her as Albert Peterson is Peter Marshall. Rivera's performance is a tad more polished on this recording, and the arrangements are paced a little more slowly here. When Rivera left the Broadway company she was replaced by Gretchen Wyler.
However, those people who have criticised Susan Watson's performance as Kim on the Broadway recording should reserve their judgement for this Kim - namely Sylvia Tysick. Tysick has a terribly-thin upper register and really struggles with most of her material. Getting back to Susan Watson...she sounds so much better on the revival cast-album of NO, NO, NANETTE (available on the Sony Broadway Masterworks label) that her lack of vocal finesse in BIRDIE can be attributed to her young age.
The rest of the cast are fantatic, with Angela Baddeley (Mrs Bridges in "Upstairs Downstairs") as Mae Peterson, and Marty Wilde as Conrad Birdie himself.
Highly-recommended. (Decca Broadway)
A very welcome re-issue.......2001-10-23
In terms of content, this album is identical to the Broadway recording (apart from that recording's bonus tracks which aren't enought to tip the balance). Chita Rivera gives a definitive performance as Rosie in both recordings but is even better in the London recording. Peter Marshall sings better than Dick Van Dyke although as Van Dyke has a touch more personality, it is a close run thing. Susan Watson on the Broadway recording outsings Sylvia Tysack on the London but Tysack is the more convincing teenager. Broadway's Paul Lynde reigns supreme as Harry Mcafee but London's Robert Nichols isn't far behind. Marty Wilde as Birdie is a definite improvement on Broadway's Dick Gautier and "Honestly Sincere" and "One Last Kiss", the two rock 'n roll parodies, come off much better in his hands. He's helped in this because Alyn Ainsworth and his orchestra are also more in tune with this particular misical idiom than their Broadway counterparts. Up to this point, it's a very close run thing as to which is the better album. The deciding factor for me is the quality of the London recording which let's through much more orchestral detail than the Broadway. There isn't a huge amont of difference between the Broadway and London recordings. If you are about to buy your first "Birdie" recording, go for the London. If you have the Broadway and want another, again get the London. In any event, it is important to have a recording that features Chita Rivera as Rose. The TV soundtrack album has extra songs but Vanessa Williams is not Chita Rivera and most of the new material isn't as good as the original score. So it's a very big welcome back for the London recording.
