Album Description
Joss Whedon, the writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, "Serenity."The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family--squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers--a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister --he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board Serenity herself. This action/adventure/Sci-Fi/western features an eclectic score by composer David Newman.
Customer Reviews:
A good listen, but could have been even better.......2007-07-20
The film's musical highlights are all represented here, and if that's all you're looking for then you should be quite satisfied with this disk. Personally, however, I think it could have been better. My main complaint is that some of the best tracks, such as 3 - Serenity (:50), and 20 - Funeral/Rebuilding Serenity (2:19), are far too short. Granted, they are taken directly from the film, but it would have been great if they had been expanded upon for the soundtrack. Also, the listener gets short-changed on the End Credits music, as, for some reason, they cut out the acoustic guitar "Firefly" theme that you hear at the very end of the film.
So purchase and enjoy, by all means; but, if you're like me, you may feel that some of these tracks tease more than they satisfy. It's my hope that we may someday get a disc of expanded themes from both the film and the series.
Great Soundtrack.......2007-07-16
I would have preferred a score written by Greg Edmonson, the composer of the TV series music, but this one is also very well done. It doesn't tell the story quite as well as the TV series music, but it is still good. The TV series music seemed more down to earth and told the stories of the characters in the series. This CD sounds more classical and movie-ish.

If it hadn't been for keyboardist Steve Halpern, the New Age genre may never have been born. His 1975 release, Spectrum Suite, marked the debut of a music whose compositional structure was free and intended for relaxation. Halpern built an entire career around this concept and thanks to his serenely inspired tinkling, along with the genre it spawned, thousands of listeners have found a musical way to unwind and heal from the stresses of life. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Halpern's Serenity Suite, a 1999 release that marries the sounds of tweeting birds and mountain streams with a gentle piano and warm electric keyboards. It's like a soundtrack to a camping trip, or rather, it captures the quiet contentment you experience when camping. Select tracks include airy flute, harp, and violin, which flow effortlessly within Halpern's pleasant atmosphere like stream water over mossy rocks. This album isn't for those who crinkle their nose at New Age music, but it certainly is for those interested in achieving serenity. --Karen K. HuggCustomer Reviews:

Great German 90's Techno/Trance/Synth/POP/Rap.......2004-02-16
10 Years I had this album, and it still takes my breath away everytime I listen to it. All those Melody Hooks, Lyrics, Raps, Synth Beats and Lines are burned in my mind forever.
This album was on the Cutting Edge of the sound in 1993, in fact IMO it was way ahead of it's time, and it still sounds AWESOME to this very day, even when compared to Modern Techno/Synth/Trance releases. this album was Revolutionary, but for Culture beat it was their 2-nd full length album.
The album was produced by the late Torsten Fenslau, God Bless his Soul!
It featured the Amazing Vocals of Tania Evans and Unofgetable rap of Jay Supreme. Don't like Rap? Well, that's probably because you've never heard EuroRap, and that's exactly what Jay Supreme's rap sounds like. Great, Upbeat, thoughtful, Emotional, and most of all Clean (not Vulgar)
The album start with a Great Intro.
It then Explodes into the Biggtest Club-Pop crossover hit of the 90's called "Mr Vain" (one would have to have lived in a cave not to hear this one).
The following Songs are Great Fast Techno/Eurodance with female Lyrics and Male Rap:
"Mr vain"
"Got to Get It"
"Anything" - this one is soo fast, it's Crazy, the whole body just shakes.
"Rocket to the Moon"
"Mother Earth" - Great song with a Message, starts out slow, with Great female Vocals that just send shivers down my spine with every listen.
"Adellante" - has rap, but mostly Instrumental, Great Stuff here.
There are also some Slower tunes, these are more Trancey and Soulful, But they still have Great Synth arrangments and Great memorable Melodies, just a bit slower.
"World In Your Hands" - a true Beauty
"Key to Your Heart" - soooo Beautiful, it's beyond words
"Other Side Of Me" - once again, a Beauty of a song, Great Synths and beat too.
"Hurt" - very Soulful and Beautiful song.
"Serenity (Epilogue)" - well, this one is a KILLER Trance/Synth/Techno Instrumental with woman saying "Serenity". The sound is sooo Powerful and Emotional. A true Trance music classic.
So, what can I say, this album is just a Perfection. It's much more than a Club/Dance CD, it's a Great Pop album that can be listened to anywhere (home or in the car or at work). And it really stands the test of time very well, because after all those years I often come back to it and still get much joy from it. It's timeless and to me holds a lot of memories, liek a time capsule.
All other CB albums are also Great, so it's worth to have all of them, expecailly "Inside Out" and "Metamorphosis" (slower, but still great)
Not to be repetitive, but this album is a Perfection of the Sound, Melody, and Songwriting.
Thank You Very Much, and Enjoy this Amazing Album.
A Terrific 90's Dance CD That Is Rarely Serene.......2002-11-19
Other notable tracks on "Serenity" are #3 ("Got To Get It"), one of my favorites; #4 ("World in Your Hands"), a slower/medium song with what sounds like a Bell Biv DeVoe sample from "Poison" playing in the background; and #11 ("Mother Earth"), an Earth-conscious song that tries to send out a positive message but comes off sounding a bit too overbearing.
In summary: "Serenity" is a terrific choice for 90's dance fans. There are plenty of fast, club-friendly tracks on here, plus a few effectively slower songs thrown in as well. Overall, it's a great pick-me-up album.
WELL WORTH YOUR TIME !.......2002-08-09
A 90's must.......2002-08-02
But you have to listen to the Prologue which could appear on a suspense or sci-fi movie sountrack.
This album is definitely a must-have.

Late-Career Showcase for the Mighty Tenor.......2007-04-18
The other 3 musicians do good work throughout: Kenny Barron complements Getz beautifully and has quite a bit of nice solo space; Rufus Reid's bass is prominent in the mix and also heard in some fine solos; and drumming by Victor Lewis fits in well. But clearly Stan Getz is the star--and he shines ever so brightly here, at age 60, with but a few short years remaining. This is very accessible modern jazz that you can safely play for just about anyone.
Heavenly Stan.......2006-01-01
A BEAUTIFUL SWAN SONG.......2005-04-09
Stan said, "I believe you should try to make music as beautiful as you can. It should not be done with ugliness. There's so much hate in the world; you have to counteract it with lovliness."
When I remarked to a friend about this being, maybe the greatest jazz recording I own (and I own a lot of jazz), my friend said, "In all the years I've been going to the Playboy Jazz Festival, Stan Getz is the finest musician I've ever heard play at the Hollywood Bowl." That's a bold statement.
Kenny Barron on piano is the perfect compliment to Stan's gorgeous playing on this.
To say that Rufus Reid on bass and Victor Lewis on drums were on fire that night would be an understatement.
TO HONOR THIS RECORDING PLAY IT THROUGH INFINITY SPEAKERS AT A HIGH VOLUME. (Infinity speakers have the warmest sound I've ever heard for jazz playback.) I HOPE THIS BECOMES ONE OF YOUR FAVORITES TOO.
If you like Late-model Getz go out and get ANNIVERSARY, BLUE SKYS, and PEOPLE TIME. Or if you're on a tight budget buy CAFE MONTMARTRE. It contains ballad selections from SERENITY, ANNIVERSARY, and PEOPLE TIME. IF ONE OF THESE DOESN'T MAKE IT INTO YOUR TOP TEN JAZZ CDS OF ALL TIME, IT'S TIME TO SEE A DOCTOR. SOMETHING MIGHT BE WRONG WITH YOUR HEARING.
ENJOY.
upbeat part of the Anniversary set.......2000-04-28
Sparkling, exuberent performances by all involved. Muscular bass lines, piano integrates perfectly with Getz direction. Perfect play by sidemen including Barron, who is best piano man Getz ever had, with the possble exception of Al Haig in the '50's. Great recording quality. Stan had been considered pretty much washed up after a decade of Fusion misadventures and much drugs and disease in the 70's . The 80's was his great come-back (see my Anniversary review) and arguably the best music of his life. Best song is the ballad "Falling in Love" which shimmers and sparkles like a diamond. Getz sails onto "Green Dolphin Street". "Voyage" is a Kenny Barron original that is now a jazz standard, one of his best known pieces.
Stan never sounds angry, on this or any other album. And he always maintains perfect control of his sax.
Gets 4-5 stars for a great performance. (I'd like to give this album more stars, if I knew how).
"Anniversary" gets a slight edge because it contains the songs I prefer, but any Stan Getz fan will want them both! For more great Getz see my list on this page.
Getz mellifluous music remains the antidote to a world of stress. "We'd ALL like to sound like Stan Getz,... if we could" - John Coltrane.
