Just for kids?? No way!!.......2005-04-08

This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music. Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").

If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.

The best classical album for kids!.......2002-12-12

This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!

I use this CD with my preschool music group. The kids love it! This CD enables children learn about classical music without over extending their attention spans.

Fly Like an Eagle Part 2 and Steve's best .......2007-02-01

The better 12 of the 24 songs Steve recorded for Fly Like an Eagle and Book of Dreams are here. Highly recommended and this may be his best.

The Eagle Returns to Dream.......2006-11-16

Back in 1976, Steve Miller recorded a batch of songs that were enough to fill two complete albums or make one double length album. He chose to divide the songs into two separate albums that were released in consecutive years: "Fly Like an Eagle" in 1976 and "Book of Dreams" in 1977. Both volumes showcase his versatility and talent for producing a variety of styles, including his own twist of originality in many of the songs. Seven of the tracks on "Book of Dreams" are found on his Greatest Hits album, which was released the following year.

Like it's predecesor, this album begins with an instrumental. "Threshold" features an organ and synthesizer that rises and falls in pitch smoothly, sort of like the sound of an airplane taking off, landing, or flying overhead. This track leads directly into "Jet Airliner", one of the popular chart hits found here. A long guitar introduction bursts into the strumming with the folk and southern rock style reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In this song, the guy is going on a trip that takes him away from family and friends, but he doubts his feelings about leaving them and asks the plane not to carry him too far away or for too long. Together,these first two tracks serve as an introduction to the album.

Other popular tracks represent a variety of styles here for this artist. Another southern rock song with a hint of the CCR style is "True Fine Love", in which a young man has decided it's time to settle down with a girl he truely loves, and raise a family with her. Another southern rock track is the love song "The Stake", with guitar work similar to The Eagles or Joe Walsh. There are a couple of great instrumental sections in the middle and at the end part. Both of these songs were included on the Greatest Hits album. "Winter Time" is a folk/soft rock hit that features a folk guitar and harmonica, as an accompaniment to the vocals and in the instrumental section. This gentle song dwells on the features of winter: brown leaves, winds, birds flying away for the summer. It begins and ends with the sound of the wind. Steve does a very creative production with "Swingtown", in which he plays with the instruments. This party song has an intro that starts with drums, which are soon joined by a bass guitar, then an organ comes in next, and then an acoustic piano, and finally a strumming guitar. The folk style vocals are accompanied by the various instruments, in a song that deals with wanting to have fun after a hard day's work. An instrumental that begins in the middle and continues to the end include a variety of organ reed "voices" that take turns, and finally the wind marks the end as other instruments fade. The other track with Steve's unique style is "Jungle Love", a rock n' roll number that begins and ends with whistles and squeaks that probably mimic birds and monkeys and other creatures found in the jungle. This whimsical love song about being in love with a girl out in the jungle features great instrumental sections with the electric guitar. This was also one of his popular hits on the radio and also on his Greatest Hits album.

The remaining five tracks may not have been seen as being among his super hits, but they still have the trademark of Steve Miller in their sound. As might be expected from its title, "Wish Upon a Star" is a gentle lullaby with a folk and soft rock style, featuring an accompaniment of organ synthesizer and bass. The theme is "It doesn't matter where or who you are when you wish upon a star. Let your dreams into your heart." A second instrumental "Electro Lux Imbroglio" showcases an organ with fancy space sounds, high flute, electronic tinkle, and church organ. This track leads into "Sacrifice", a mellow composition and the longest piece on this album. This song about a girl who did not appreciate the man she once was with, and therefore sacrificed the relationship, is marked by fancy organ accompaniment with tinkling and trills, as well as bass and drums in the instrumental section. "My Own Space", the last vocal on this album, begins with wind sounds, and later includes an instrumental in the middle with fancy organ and guitar techniques. This reflective, folk-like song is about escaping from problems and worries by heading off to a quiet place like a seashore, where clouds pass overhead, and he walks in the sand, picks up seashells, feels the spirit of life, "where I reach my destiny, I feel free, where I can have my own space".

This album ends with the third instrumental, "Babes in the Woods". This is another novelty piece of Miller's, with a variety of musical instruments such as the strumming guitar, drums, tinkling triangle, flute sounds, and bass. It is as if the instruments themselves are the players, since there are no vocals; the flute and guitar seem to be the focal point, while the triangle, bass, and drums are in the background. This mellow performance marks a quiet closing of this album.

Together, this album and the preceding one, would produce nearly enough popular hits to construct a Greatest Hits album, which was released the following year; as well as provide considerable material for other greatest hits releases that came later. Steve seemed to reach the high point of his recording career and popularity in 1976 and 1977, and is remembered by these songs, for the most part. No one else seems able to quite mimic Steve's unique creativity in producing these artistic masterpieces.

Quite possibly Steve Miller's best album!.......2006-08-17

Steve Miller's eleventh album Book of Dreams was released in May of 1977.
The album was recorded at the same time as its predecessor, 1976's 4 million plus selling Fly Like an Eagle(which hit #3 on the Billboard chart).
Most people would have gone the double album route once they recorded 20 plus songs but Steve Miller(who penned most of the tracks except as noted) saved some songs from the Fly Like an Eagle sessions and re-worked them and added some extra things to the songs. Would this album be a classic or be slagged a carbon copy of the predecessor, read ahead and find out(as I did in 1989 when I got the cassette which was missing two tracks and again in 1991 when the full original album was re-issued on cassette and then I eventually acquired the CD).
We begin the album with the excellent Steve Miller and Byron Allred synthesizer intro Threshold which is a fanfare type doodle with long synthesizer chords with sound effects added, unlike Space Intro on Fly Like an Eagle which was an echo-plexed series of notes with wind. We then segue into the album's Top 10 hit Jet Airliner(penned by Paul Pena and Miller although Steve did not take credit for it) which is the full 4 minute version(with obscenity left intact unlike the version from Greatest Hits 1974-78). Next, we slow down with the acoustic ballad Winter Time which is a classic song that begins with wind swirls and features Norton Buffalo on harmonicas and Steve playing sitar guitar and playing a tasty lead guitar solo. Next is a great rocker called Swingtown(penned by Miller and Chris McCarty) which was a Top 20 hit(in its edited form) but its full version was excellent. Another rocker follows with True Fine Love which is a superb song and features Steve's classic multi-tracked three guitar harmony solo in the middle. The song, for some reason, was not on the mid-80s re-issued LP or cassette version but was back on the cassette version as of 1991 and appears on the CD version of the album. We end the first side of Book of Dreams with the lullabye-ish ballad Wish Upon a Star which features excellent synthesizer work from Miller and Allred.
Side two of the album starts with the album's third Top 20 single Jungle Love(a great rocker penned by bass player Lonnie Turner and extra guitarist Greg Douglass) which was famous for its whistle effects courtesy of keyboardist Allred and has some great synth effects and great guitar work. My personal favorite section of the album was next with the instrumental Electro Lux Imbroglio which is a superb synthesizer drenched fanfare which segues into the 5 plus minute Sacrifice penned by Boz Scaggs guitarist Les Dudek and session musician Curley Cooke. Steve only does vocals on here and some extra guitar but a great song and Dudek's solos on this track are superb. Next is another rocker The Stake which was penned by Steve and David Denny and was a great showcase for Miller's superb guitar playing showing us he could play some great solos and is a great shuffle. next is the track My Own Space which was penned by Jason Cooper, B Winkleman and Miller(although he did not take credit). This slow paced song is excellent and has some great guitar work and vocals from Steve and synthesizer work from Allred. The song(like True Fine Love) was not on the mid-80s re-issued LP or cassette version but was back on the cassette version as of 1991 and appears on the CD version of the album. The acoustic guitar and synthesizer instrumental Babes in the Wood ends the album on a relaxing note.
Book of Dreams is a classic album and rightfully sold 3 plus million copies in the US alone and reached #2 on the Billboard chart(it couldn't topple Fleetwood Mac's Rumours from #1). The album still sells today cos of the music contained within and not for the image.

I received my order very quickly and was very pleased. This CD has alot of great songs on it and the quality was great. This is unavailable in the music stores and I am enjoying listening to all these old songs. I will definitely order again!

Stunning CD.......2005-08-04

I met Erquiaga during the "Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Camp" in 2005. The camp is rather traditional style Jazz camp and more focused on improvising. I am a guitar player and Erquiaga was our combo teacher. We had three sax players, a piano, drums, an upright bass, and a guitar. You get the idea... I found him an excellent Jazz music educator. And I also found him as a great jazz guitar player after seeing him playing during the faculty concert. The camp is all about Jazz.

After the camp is over, I did some web search to find any Erquiaga's CD and I found this one. Without thinking much nor reading about it I just ordered it. When I put the CD into my CD player, I was just stunned in two ways: (1) It was not a Jazz. (2) What a great music it is. I was amazed by his versatility and the beauty of his music no matter what it is. I normally listen to Jazz but this CD is very frequently placed on my CD player. Great work Erquiaga! I am truely impressed.

Cafe Paradiso by Erquiaga.......2003-05-01

I own hundreds of guitar music tapes and CDs by as many artists. I must say that I was stunned by this arrangement of Presto (JS Bach) and consider it one of the finest performances I have ever heard. This CD is 1 of the best collections of guitar music I have even heard, I would pay $ for the second CD, if Steve were to ever produce another.

Cafe Paradiso is Gorgeous! Erquiaga is brilliant !.......2002-12-16

I've owned Cafe Paradiso for about a year. I received it as a Chrismas gift last year. It was my best and most enduring gift. I loved it then, and I'm in love with it even more now.
I never write reviews, but I came back here to order 5 CafÂŽ Paradiso CDs to give as Christmas gifts, and I realize I have to make my feelings know about this CD.
It is absolutely beautiful, it creates such magic, such a wonderful vibe. Steve Erquiaga's brilliance as a guitarist and musician is only surpassed by his unique ability to touch you with every note he plays, he gently wraps you in his music. It's truely amazing.
If you don't have this CD, get it ! You won't be sorry, I guarantee it !

Extraordinary.......2002-01-24

I never waste my time on reviews - until now. I heard this CD on my television at the Peninsula Hotel in Bangkok - it came on every time I turned on the T.V. Since there was also a T.V. over the faucets in the bathtub, I listened to it in the bath and the bedroom every day. It is absolutely fabulous! It is far and away my favorite CD (and I have hundreds)! I'm buying them for all of my best friends, and I'm looking for more by Steve Erquiaga.

Excellent, eclectic and very "cerebral" music.......1999-07-08

I bought this CD directly from Peter himself after he played a mini-concert in his hometown, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The artist is as brilliant as his music. Peter is very down-to-earth, and a very diverse audience thoroughly enjoyed his music at the concert. I highly recommend it for everyone.

I like the good mix of instruments which accentuate flute.......1998-07-04

The CD is a good mix of differenct types of music from Scarborough Fair to interpretive Native American. There are diffent types of flutes used to produce the CD, so the variety and versatility of sound add to the listening "feast". I find it very enjoyable listening while working or relaxing. Highly recommended for flute music lovers.

As one might expect, the set is stuffed with contrasts, from the first CD, with its 11-part, upstepping John Adams suite and then the far more solemn Missa Syllabica from Arvo Pärt. Nearly 20 of these pieces here were composed expressly for Kronos, pitched and sculpted for their easily-racked mixture of straightforward string quartet roles and intelligently restructured approaches to the even the simplest gestures. Perhaps most key here is George Crumb's Black Angels, in large part due to Crumb's role in inspiring David Harrington to form Kronos 25 years ago. Crumb's music spirals and chases through the air, engaging high pitches and fast pacings as if they were ends in themselves. Gone from this set are most of the short snippets that have filled some of Kronos's other fine single CD recordings. In abundance instead are some of the legendary works: Morton Feldman's long, endlessly patient Piano and String Quartet (with Aki Takahashi), Steve Reich's unnerving Different Trains, and Henryk Górecki's String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2. There are also some of the astounding Eastern European works from Night Prayers as well, including the stunning Quartet No. 4 from Sofia Gubaidulina. And of course there are the Kronos biggie pieces: Philip Glass's works fill one CD, and so do Terry Riley's. What's more, Riley's Cadenza on the Night Plain and "G Song" are presented here in entirely fresh, new recordings. What the listener gets is a huge block of music, full of shifting colors and textures but perfectly apt in giving a wide-angle vantage on what Kronos has done for contemporary music. --Andrew Bartlett

A worthwhile investment.......2003-10-06

It would be an understatement to say that this is a fabulous box set. All 10 CDs are packed with some fabulous music that beautifull highlights the first 25 years of the Kronos Quartet, and the booklet included provides a great history of the group as well as nice blurbs on the composers and their pieces.

Equally nice about the box set is the inclusion of multiple new recordings, thus making this a worthwhile investment for fans. The Peter Sculthorpe Quartets are a particularly nice addition, as are the added Piazzolla, Part, and Riley compositions.

Along with this, the "classic" Kronos recordings are all here: "Black Angels" "Different Trains" "Salome Dances for Peace" (well, exceprts), and Feldman's Piano and String Quartet. Of particular note, I think is the inclusion of Gubaidulina's Quartet No 4, a fabulous recording that is otherwise hidden in Kronos' recording "Night Prayers."

Yes, this is quite an investment, but I firmly believe that it's worth it - longtime fans and newcomers alike have a lot to gain from this collection.

Excelent compilation!.......2001-09-09

I like more classic period, like Hayden, but Cronos does it very well, technicaly excelent. The ten sets are wonderful recordings and the selection is unique. It deserves the investment, If you buy it, youre going to have more than ten hours of joy.

Amazingly Now Retrospective.......2001-06-26

Since their youthful start in the NW back in the 70's, Kronos has collaborated with, commissioned, or just played such a breadth of musicians it almost seems that breadth - and especially non western world culture - is their mission. But, while this conservatively and esthetically designed 25-yr-retrospective box (with its increasingly sophisticated photo-portraits) belies the pulsation of social angst and conscience that underlies the bulk of the inclusions, the latter concern, its vitality and relevance - and not some stylish chasing after cultural breadth - is what overtakes the listener/reader, rather soon. I say reader, since the booklet is very helpful, especially to the relative novice, and well balanced in its coverage of composers, historical contexts, performers, individual texts, etc.

There are probably more non contemporaries performed by the Quartet over the years than this selection would indicate. That undercuts their ties with the sense of revolution in music throughout the ages, but it leaves more time for the present: and that is where one expects the group wishes to be, is most contributory and challenged, and is best and most fairly judged. Highly recommended, both for those who know Kronos's work well and wish a handsome tribute on their shelf, and for those who do not but are open and ready to be affected, whether impacted esthetically, reminded socio-morally, or whatever combination of both befits.

How Could You Not Listen?.......1998-12-19

My opinion pales when compared to this CD. Indeed the group's ingeniousness, its knowing and its balls are in full display here, hopefully to put to rest any lingering contention that there is little more to Kronos than form. To any person who accepts the merits of 20th-century music, this CD presents the genius of our culture and teaches that daring and ingenuity do not have to be sacrificed on the road to technical brilliance. My only regret is that the CD does not include Kronos's interpretation of Bartok. But, so what? Górecki's here, as are Part and Benshoof. Listen to this CD -- soar and struggle with it.

Good for help to know up-to-date contemporaly music.......1998-11-28

The Kronos Quartet has released many albums. There let us see what the quartet has tried new titles and arrenges in each period. But this is the best set for understand the quartet as summary of thier works. The CDs are distributed by each composers and we can see thier identities easily.Unfortunately this dose not include all but be enough to see what the quartet has been.I hope that every classical music fans(not only contemporaly music fans) listen this CDs.

Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month!That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included,especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though,there is a complain:i can't understand,why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song,the cues from the Bacchaen festival,music from Deja Vou All Over Again,where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest!That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style,should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes.It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song,will agree with me!Mmmm!

A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

Best of the Best.......2007-05-20

If you're into ethereal music that you can meditate to, and have an adventure ( i.e. not get bored ), then this cd is for you. I have insomnia more than half my nights, and this is the cd I put on to help me sleep. By the way, if a cd can put you to sleep I consider it great, as opposed to others who confuse relaxation with boredom. If a cd is horrible, I wont be able to fall asleep to it at all. This music is complex, beautiful, and very hard to play. I've been struggling with the Arabesque for about a month now, and I can even play the Rach 2, so it's not amatuerish. I have hundreds of classical cds, as for piano music, the top 3 are: David Helfgott plays Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto, Debussy Dreams, and Saint-Saen's complete Piano Concertos. Give this one a try.

An exceptional CD.......2003-01-30

A beautiful arrangement of Debussy's works. Each piece follows so well after the other that there is an artistic mastery in the sequence of the pieces. Very soothing to the soul. I especially love L'Cathedrale Engloutie. I can envision the creation of a magnificent cathedral to see it consumed in water at the end. I also love Estamps, Reverie, Clair de lune and the final Nocture. Very well performed and a treasure to have. My favorite CD of classical works.

Claude Debussy - Dreams.......2000-06-23

WOW! What an amazing cd! Aldo Ciccolini puts forth a great effort in bringing out Debussy's music! The emotion and expression, especially in his Sarabande (Pour le piano) is absolutely tremendous! Other classics, such as his Nocturne, Arabesque and Clair de Lune, make this a cd that everyone should own! Claude Debussy was a dreamer, and his music was his dreams. It is very easy to get caught up in dreaming as you listen to this cd. I highly recommend this to anyone!
