4 out of 5 stars ariley86.......2006-11-04

This cd has most of Blue Magic's classic well-known and little-known selections. I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it to all "Old School" '70's music enthusiasts. Listening to it brought back many pleasant memories of basement parties and high school dances.

5 out of 5 stars Titans In The Realm Of "Sweet Soul"...........2005-12-09

The quality of this cd is higher than the other 2 "Greatest Hits" cds commercially released to the market. However, unless all the group's albums, in mint condition, are in one's soul music collection portfolio, the songs not on this cd warrant the acquisition of the other cd(s). The group, featuring lead singer Ted "The Wizard" Mills, produced enough sweet soul gems to firmly entrance the group into what would be the "Sweet Soul Hall Of Fame"! The anticipated release of several of their albums on cd will allow access to a number of other gems never before released on cd. The "Magic Of The Blue" album to name one, loaded.... with "Looking For A Friend" and others. Enjoy the music of Blue Magic? More treats are on the lps. When the cds reach the market, buy em'!

4 out of 5 stars Blue Magic indeed!.......2005-09-07

I must admit that I tracked this album after listening to 'Look me up' on the radio during an excellent soul show (Soul Cellar). I wanted an album that had as many tracks as possible in the hope that there would be some other gems. I was not disappointed. All n' all a very delightful album and, one for any soul fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars another great creation in 70's soul music.......2005-04-20

i'm a little behind in the 70's cause i born in the late 70's, but i'm one of the best collector of old school love songs ( SPELL ) is my favorite song BLUE MAGIC made 8 or 9 album their 1983-(magic #) is hard to find but i found it in baltimore,md for 25 dollars--BLUE MAGIC is also one of the first soul groups to be on a rap label called ( DEF JAM RECORDS)-back in 1989 record title called (FROM OUT OF THE BLUE)

5 out of 5 stars Sexy Soul!!.......2004-07-06

I thought i had heard it all and then i stumbled across Blue Magic. These guys are so silky they can melt the hardest of hearts. Now brace yourself because life is just about to get sweet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THE LEGEND !.......2006-07-04

As similar to the terrible ending of film legend, Dorothy Dandridge, it seems Phyllis Hyman met the same fate. Why they took their own lives, no one really knows. They were just as great as these living legends: Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Angela Bofill, and Whitney Houston on the popular Arista label. Their memories will live on !!

5 out of 5 stars What talent!!.......2005-05-23

I always loved the song You Know How to Love Me but never new the artist that recorded it although I did hear of Phyllis. I bought this CD for that one song and the whole disk is great. My personal favorite is You Sure Look Good To Me. That song has so much energy I don't know why it wasn't a big hit. It had me hooked in the first minute of the song. She is a versataille artist who covers the likes of R&B, Jazz, Soul etc. Such a shame she had to leave the world with all that talent. As a previous reviewer mentioned this is only a sampler CD and I've already ordered her Legacy 2CD and also this same CD so I can keep one in the car. Can't leave home without Phyllis.

3 out of 5 stars Phyllis' first-ever compilation album........2005-02-22

This was Phyllis' first-ever anthology and includes some of her biggest Arista hits. Unfortunately, much of the material Arista boss Clive Davis (and his cohorts) gave Phyllis did NOT do her talents justice as they tried to make her a commercial diva. The tragedy about artists like Phyllis, Jean Carne, Angela Bofill, Brenda Russell and Patti Austin is that their best songs were album-only tracks which had no commercial appeal (as such, the single releases had to be trendy to some degree). This IS a good CD but the "Legacy Of Phyllis Hyman" 2-CD set offers both better value for your money AND a much better selection of Phyllis' music.

5 out of 5 stars May God bless your soul Phyllis, Greatly Miss U.......2005-01-11

We know that Phyllis Hyman is not around anymore but she's lives on tho right here on this greatest hits compilation which I have on cassette. I thank God for her talent, work, and legacy she left us behind be4 she's been in the music business all her life. Can't say much 'bout it but this is a must who wants to pay their respect to Phyllis Hyman, the songstress of Jazz, Soul & R&B.

Phyllis, I'm a real big fan and miss you eternally, R.I.P.

5 out of 5 stars AVERAGE? I think not!.......2003-02-03

Hyman could do more with one measure than many other artists could do with an entire composition. This is a mere "sampler" of the wonderful talent that was Phyllis Hyman.

It is worth the money, the time, and the reflection on a life so sadly taken too soon.

It's always good to know where a band came from so you can see how far they've come. Speak and Spell is really the work of Vincent Clarke, who, with Andy Bell, would later form the happy-go-lucky pop-dance megaforce Erasure. And it shows in the catchy, upbeat songs "New Life," "Boys Say Go," "Photographic," and the most famous single, "Just Can't Get Enough." When Martin Gore took over the songwriting, Depeche Mode veered toward a different thematic direction by developing the goth-pop that would become their signature. Still, it's an important album not only because it is Depeche Mode's first but also because it is one of the best representations of early-'80s minimalist synth music. --Beth Bessmer

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars DM's humble beginnings........2006-11-12

Sometimes it is interesting to hear where a band began. And for some people, they will need to approach "Speak & Spell" with an open mind. For one thing, don't expect the hard-rock/gospel approach of "Songs of Faith and Devotion" and don't expect any of the goth from "Black Celebration" forward. It's nothing like that. Alan Wilder hadn't yet joined by this point and Martin Gore only writes two of the 11 songs here. Also, though, there's a good chance that if you love Yazoo and Erasure but care little for later DM, you would enjoy this album. It is not dark at all: It's very happy, and some of it is so in a goofy way.

This album's strengths also tend to be the weaknesses. This album practically defines early-'80's synth-pop. All of these are certainly pop songs. There are certainly novelty moments in here: Most notably, the cheesy "What's Your Name?" which actually spells out "p-r-e-double t-y", and which has the chorus of "you're such a pretty boy." "Boys Say Go" and "Nodisco" are quite as explicitly in that category, but will sound goofy to some. Gore's songwriting got better in later DM albums, and the songs he contributes here are kind of average. "Big Muff" is a techno instrumental that kind of goes on for longer than it needs to, although a nice shot of early techno. Oh, and if you don't like repetitive you won't find much in this album either. It is pretty repetitive. The lyrics are not deep. Usually the hooks and structures save it from being disposable, although a few tracks here are pretty forgettable, like "Puppets", which seems more like a B-side to me, the only real dud on here. It is not that bad however, and there are highpoints, particularly in "Just Can't Get Enough." I like the original version more, but the schizo mix works fine enough for me. This is the most famous here for a good reason: It's catchy, it's got the classic pop song-writing, and it's got a sing-along refrain, complete with those cool old-school synths. I like listening to this because the band sounds so young and naïve. Gahan hadn't yet gotten his dark, rich voice which came on later albums, but in some ways that makes this a more melodic release. It could also be that he wasn't even 20 yet by the time of the album's release. A few moments, unfortunately, don't do much for me at all.

If you're a casual fan, I recommend "The Singles 81>85" and the import version, which is better than the U.S. version. They keep "Dreaming of Me" and "JCGE (Schizo mix)," but those are at the end and it uses the whole original "S&S" release that had "I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead" (great example of the New Romantic style they had early on; not that depressing), another version of "Any Second Now," as well as tracks non-existant here. It isn't one of my favorite DM albums, but the ceiling is pretty high for them if you ask me. It is most certainly the song-writing of Vince Clarke, for better or worse.

5 out of 5 stars Pick it up!.......2006-05-07

This was depeche mode's first release and sounds quite different from their later recordings of course. This is a great start for anyone new to DM , This also comes with some intresting facts about DM's upbbringing. BUY IT

3 out of 5 stars A Frothy but Fun Debut........2006-01-03

This is the debut album from a group called Depeche Mode, four gentlemen from Basildon who perform music entirely with synthesizers. By the time this record came out, disco met its death, classic rock fell out of vogue, Reaganism and Thatcherism were in full effect, and new wave was continuing to make waves on both sides of the Atlantic. 1981's "Speak and Spell" will come as a surprise to newer Depeche Mode fans who started their collection with "Violator." For one, the album is penned almost entirely by Vince Clarke, whose style is radically different from Martin Gore, who eventually became the group's main songwriter. Secondly, much of "Speak and Spell" is filled of the perky, 80's synth-pop cheese that makes classic rock fans scream in agony. But underneath the techno Velveeta are a few gems that have endured as DM classics: the icy "Dreaming of Me," the catchy "New Life," and the hit "Just Can't Get Enough." Other similarly frothy numbers are "Photograph," "Boys Say Go," and the positively silly "What's Your Name?" with its repetitive chant "Hey, you're such a pretty boy." As it turned out, Clarke left the Mode shortly after the release of this album (to join Allison Moyet of Yaz, and later Erasure), leaving Gore with the task to fill his shoes. My three-star rating might raise the ire of some hardcore fans of this album, but it shouldn't be construed as a snub. I actually like and recommend "Speak and Spell," but you must realize that this is a rough debut from a band that hadn't yet formed its identity. It would take at least a couple more albums for Depeche Mode to fully realize its potential as a great synth pop act. Dive in.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable first DM studio album, but lacks the power these songs had live.......2005-10-22

Speak & Spell is a fine album. My main beef is that the U.S. version lacks one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs ever: the brooding "Dreaming of Me" b-side "Ice Machine." Plus, "Shout" is missing, which I really hoped would be here. Other favorites of mine from the Speak & Spell era are "Photographic" and "Puppets" (which were both much more powerful and downright AMAZING when played live). It's ironic that two of my favorite DM songs were written by Vince Clarke, especially considering the fact the only Erasure song I like is "Oh L'Amour". As you can tell, I'm more fond of the 'serious' songs off Speak & Spell ("Tora Tora" is excellent as well), but there are obviously some great upbeat tunes to be found. "Dreaming Of Me, "Boys Say Go!," and especially "Just Can't Get Enough" can be included on that list.

3.5 stars for the U.S. version. If this contained "Ice Machine" and "Shout," I'd give it 4.

4 out of 5 stars judge it within its context.......2005-10-21

of course 'speak and spell' sounds cheesy in 2005. it's 25 years old and any fair assestment/critique of 'speak and spell' needs to examine when it was recorded and released. in 1981 synthesizer music technology was still very much in its embryonic state. Very few bands (kraftwerk, human league, OMD, depeche mode, among other) used synths and even fewer knew how to harness the technology. i imagine programming synths was a lot like building rocket ships -- lots of trial and error, some hits, some misses.

it should come as little suprise, then, that 'speak and spell' is a bit simplistic and cheesy. what's impressive about 'speak and spell,' however, are the absolutely phenomenal melodies vince clark composed. one listen to 'just can't get enough' and its permanently engravaed into your brain. and since it was vince clarke's album, it bears hardly and resemblence to the latter martin gore dm albums (the exception being 'photographic' and 'puppets' -- both a bit darken in tone). its easy to forgive vince for 'what's your name?' when he wrote such classic dm songs as 'new life,' 'dreaming of me,' and the aforementioned 'photographic' and 'just can't get enough.'

what's special about 'speak and spell' are the classic dm synth intros--most of the songs have a synth intro. 'just can't get enough' and 'new life' are prime examples of a new style of songwriting. vince didn't waste time with the hook coming in the middle of the song or the verse or a bridge. the hooks were front and center, immediate attention grabbers. in that way, vince single-handedly changed pop songwriting.

if you do invest in 'speak and spell,' be sure to get the import version. several essential dm cuts aren't found on the US release, namely: 'i sometimes wish i was dead,' 'shout,' and 'ice machine.' of the three, 'shout' is a standout. i sure wannabe synthlords scratched their collective heads wondering how in the world vince got that sort of sound out of a keyboard. it's an amazing song and worth the heavy asking price.

in the end, does 'speak and spell' hold up 25 years on? no, not really. but that's hardly the point. to listen to an album released in 1981, you sort of have to listen to it with 1981 ears. to do anything else does you, the album and the band a huge disservice because underneath the fluff lay some of the greatest synth songs ever penned by synth music's uberoverlord, vince clarke.

      Album Description

Rooted in the U.K.'s late `70s New Romantic movement, Depeche Mode formed in 1980, and the pioneering, synthesizer-based sound created by the founding partnership of Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Vince Clarke, and Andrew Fletcher went on to establish them as one of the most successful alt-rock groups ever. These electro-pop superstars loomed as large as cult heroes as they did as commercial heavies, and their wealth of singles and signature tracks ranged from energetic dance grooves to dramatic, moody, and industrial-tinged masterpieces. Depeche's originality of vision weathered personnel shifts and personal turmoil, influencing modern rock and synth-pop on a global level. As the band continues to tour, record and build on its legacy a quarter-century down the road, Rhino begins its restoration of their classic catalogue with the CD + DVD reissue of this landmark album.

      4 out of 5 stars No SACD?.......2007-02-03

That's because Rhino is now owned by the WEA group and they don't support SACD. They could have used DVD-Audio instead, considering all the trouble they went to creating surround versions. The DTS 96/24 tracks are decent IF you have a newer 96/24 DTS decoder, otherwise you'll get 48/24 output. This same problem will plague the upcoming Genesis reissues as well, you'll only get the SACD layer if you buy the import and that means the videos will be PAL format.

5 out of 5 stars Great Documental part #1.......2007-01-31

I purchase this album only to complete all Documental parts of the remastered collection. Becose I have the old album and is very interesting see Vice talk about DM, since leave the band. 4 out of 5 stars Something Old, Something New.......2007-01-09

      The Package.
Double digipack containing a remastered Audio CD, and a DVD with remastered stereo, 5.1, and DTS versions of the album. The DVD also contains the extra tracks and a half-hour "documentary".

      The Good.
The documentary is a great bonus.
The remastered CD is better than the original CD release, albeit only marginally.
It is very interesting to hear the DTS versions because you can pick up a lot you never heard in the original stereo versions. Tracks are nice and crystal clear, and also slightly different from the originals, and not just because of the DTS. The vocals are very clear and for once it is easy to understand the lyrics.

      The Bad.
Why does the CD not contain the extra tracks? This is completely bizarre!
The DTS versions are not very well done. The drums sound puny compared to the originals and are very watered-down on several tracks. New Life is particularly weak. It's difficult to describe but you will hear it instantly - the "clap" sound present in most of the original snares is very distant or non-existant, so it's quite strange to hear this. Some FX seem to have been stripped from or modified in certain sounds and, while interesting, detracts from the enjoyment - I find myself thinking "it's not supposed to sound like that". This is especially true in sounds where reverb seems to have been lowered considerably.

If I had the choice over again, I'm not sure I would have paid the $23 for this package. The Audio CD could have been remastered a lot better and should have included all the b-sides and extra tracks - try getting them from the DVD onto your iPod!! Also, how about some other studio tracks from around the same time as extras - Television Set, Reason Man, I Like It ... etc. This alone would make it worthy of being called a "Deluxe" edition.

      5 out of 5 stars nice job.......2007-01-03

Even there is a long time from this first work, its always nice look back and listen whats would be the start for this wonderful team of boys and company like mute, bringing us for the last 25 years with excelent music

To watch some images from that time and the way they get trought from basildon to the world its something you have to do, in order to fully understand about the great contribution this band have made to the music around the world

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent remaster...........2006-08-28

I couldn't ask for better sound and care for the album's restoration and re-release. If you've got the original CD edition, this remaster necessitates a repurchase. If you're a newcomer, SPEAK & SPELL is a real treat, displaying a young and perhaps naive Depeche Mode, with Vince Clarke as their main songwriter. A very memorable and trendsetting album. The bonus DVD's documentary is also first-rate.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely LOVE "Spell".......2007-02-23

I have always loved the song "Spell" by Deon Estus. I am dedicating it to my boyfriend tomorrow for our 1 yr anniversary. I love the words, I love Deon's voice. Yes, George Michael sang background, but I am still and always will be a Deon Estus fan first. I don't know what happened to him but I wish he was still singing.

3 out of 5 stars Solo debute of former Bass player of Wham!.......2006-08-18

Any big fan of Wham! would have been aware of Deon Estus and his solo debute cd. Everyone remembers "Heaven Help Me" but few know that it was just one of four singles (45s) released from the album. The title track "Spell" was released first and it did not chart. Second was "Heaven Help Me" with George Michael on background vocals which went top 10. They then re-released "Spell" with a different picture sleeve and b-side but it did not chart. The fourth single was "Me Or The Rumors" and that bombed too. I do not know of any additional releases by Deon. Other Wham! releated releases are their back up singers - Pepsi & Shirlie. They had a minor hit with "Heartache".

2 out of 5 stars GEORGE MICHAEL IS A GENEROUS FRIEND, INDEED..........2006-07-23

... because I swear that that's him singing the lead vocal on "Heaven Help Me"... but then again, it's amazing how much they can tinker with a lead vocal in the studio... in any event, it's at least 50% of George's voice all over this song... other than that, this recording "SMELLs".

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Help Me!!.......2005-09-06

Yes, this is Deon Estus singing the lead song with his buddy, George Michael, from their Wham days, signing background. This is one of the most beautiful songs that came out in the 80's. Most people were confused with this song, because it could have well been a Wham song with the very similar song arrangement. Deon and George - where have you guys gone?

4 out of 5 stars Hmmmm...... seems it is George afterall............2005-04-12

allmusic.com, my online source for information lists this song on the Album Spell, which is a Deon Estus album, but it lists it as written by George Michael as well as 'performed by' George Michael.

Go figure! What's it doing on a Deon Estus album then?

It is a beautiful song, regardless of who is singing it.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck, eh?
It's labeled a George Michael song in my collection.
Now, if only I could find the album art for it.

Being a hardcore NRBQ fan, this album was hard to resist. Before I bought it, I thought I would like it, and I really do. Never have I heard lyrics ranging from Imogene Coca to styrofoam on one album, but Terry pulls it off with typical Terry style and panache. Tom Ardolino kick in on drums, and, well, there you go.

      5 out of 5 stars I saw them a few weeks back.......2006-05-26

Amina are an all female group of instrumentalists who rarely use vocals and when they do they use them as instruments and not for lyrics. Strangely ethereal and tranquil are the best ways of describing their sound. Overall, their sound is quiet and trance inducing and they've often worked in the background with Sigur Ros who they were opening for and performing with that night I saw them. In my opinion they blow the Sigur ros away, they did that night. The Sigur ros were one of the worst live acts I've ever seen, or heard, live even though I do enjoy their records. It makes for a boring concert, but I still have my Amina EP to enjoy, so the evening wasn't a complete loss.

4 out of 5 stars Waiting for their LP.......2006-03-11

I saw them live in Grand Rapids, MI opening for Sigur Ros and they were fab! Great tease of an album...am curious to hear what a full length album will sound like...their music has a soft-gentle quality, but moves into climax. This music asks great attention to detail.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent first EP from Amina.......2006-02-23

I just saw Amina open for Sigur Ros last night in St. Louis, and I do have to say that I was totally blown away by their performance. These four women have been long time contributors to Sigur Ros, and indeed, if you do enjoy the music of Sigur Ros, you most certainly will enjoy this album. All of the four songs on this EP are hauntingly beautiful with sounds from strings, harp, xylophone, and an electronic mix. I am interested in what this group might sound like with vocals, and so I have given a rating of four stars. The music is wonderful, and I expect this group to grow and develop in great ways. Just know that if you purchase this CD, there are differences from Sigur Ros: no vocals, and a more feminine/lighter sound to the music. Again, Amina impressed me greatly enough that I went ahead and bought this EP after their performance. Hopefully there will be a full length CD coming out soon.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning .......2006-01-22

Saw Sigur Ros live last year and was totally enthralled and amazed by this opening band. Has to be owned by all Sigur Ros fans. A soft, quiet, sparse, and an absolutely gorgeous piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful and compelling.......2005-09-12

I have never written a review for an album, but after seeing them live with sigur ros i feel compelled to tell everyone who's willing to read/listen about this great band. The band's composed of four women who play the most hypnotic dream landscape that i've ever heard. Anima played back up for sigur ros (i just saw them live at Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland). The mix of silience and sound, of texture and color is something that everyone should hear. If you like sigur ros then DO buy this album. It's a treat for eyes and ears . . . have fun listening.

      5 out of 5 stars Nina's Spell.......2007-02-18

Nina Simone can be considered an acquired taste--like black coffee, fine brandy, or good cigars. With a voice that's less than perfect, she's nevertheless full of passion and pain, joy and raunchiness in her music. This album covers all those emotions set against the background her of well-arranged orchestration and her exceptional skill as a pianist.

Nina is a genre all her own. Her style varies broadly--from blues to jazz to gospel to folk and political music. This album is not a showcase that variety, merely one facet of it. This album has more of a fun feel to it than some of her other recordings--with songs like 'Marriage is for Old Folks' and 'Gimme Some' as well as the child-like 'Beautiful Land.' Nina is certainly no idealist, though, showing her passion and her pain in songs like 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' and 'You've Got to Learn.'

For Nina fans, this album is a nice break away from some of her moodier, darker work. For those just discovering Nina, this album would be an excellent way to ease into acquiring the taste for her music--splashing a little cream into one's black coffee, as it were.

As a dedicated fan of Nina's musical uniqueness, I've found this to be a very pleasant album that's just right for lifting the stresses of day away and losing myself in a little bit of fun.
