A singer, musician (multi-instrumentalist) and composer with more than 30 years of performance and training experience, Ms. Yao is also a graduate of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, a 4-year accredited program of intensive academic and clinical training and personal development in Brennan Healing Science. Bernadette is highly trained to assess and facilitate change in the state of the Human Energy-Consciousness System of another. Through merging her love of music and her skills as a certified Brennan Healing Science and Reiki practitioner, Bernadette has created her new CD "Radiance: Healing Music for Mind, Body & Spirit".
Bernadette has had formal training in music most of her life. Her first musical instrument was the piano which she began formal training at 7 years old, and then began formal training in voice at the age of 10. In addition to maintaining her private training in voice and piano, Bernadette studied music theory and composition at Wellesley College while still attending a nearby high school. As a classically trained soprano and pianist, Bernadette was accepted at the internationally acclaimed Indiana University School of Music as a Voice Performance major. While at IU, she continued to study piano, composition, theory, music literature, voice, and jazz improvisation. She studied with highly acclaimed opera singers and voice teachers including Roy Samuelson, Marco Rothmuller, and Leslie Holmes. She also studied Jazz Improvisation with David Baker.
With a 3-octave vocal range and a wide variety of singing styles, Bernadette performed with numerous music groups from classical choirs to jazz ensembles, rock bands, and as a singer/songwriter. Bernadette was a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus / Boston Symphony orchestra for many years, performing with the BSO/TFC and the Boston Pops in Boston's Symphony Hall, Tanglewood in Lenox, MA, Carnegie Hall, New York's Lincoln Center, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Osaka. As a member of the TFC, Bernadette has sung in numerous performances and recordings with Seiji Ozawa, Charles Dutoit, and John Williams to name a few.
Bernadette Yao got her start in television in 1972 as one of the striped-shirted cast members of the award-winning original ZOOM. She worked on the show from 1972 to '73 and is fondly remembered for "the arm thing" she did in the show's open. After graduating from Indiana University with B. A. in Liberal Arts and minor in Music, she returned to Boston and WGBH - working behind the camera during live pledge drives and for Martha Stewart's PBS program, Entertaining with Martha Stewart. Later, Yao went on to Boston's CBS affiliate station to produce and host the Emmy-nominated Asian Focus; host and associate produce the award-winning documentary, Violence Against Asians; and co-produce a Sunday morning talk show, Boston Common.
