One of the better known southern rock bands of the 1970s, The Outlaws enjoyed some moderate success with hits like "There Goes Another Love Song." Following in the tradition of practically every band who had a contract at that time, The Outlaws released an obligatory live album in 1978. Their harmonies, both vocal and guitar, held up pretty well on stage, as evidenced by the before mentioned "Love Song," and "Freeborn Man," as well as "I Hope You Don't Mind." "Hurry Sundown," another Outlaws classic gets an equally fine treatment. But of course, the real meat comes at the end of the show with "Green Grass and High Tides." Taking a cue from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird," The Outlaws wrote an epic of their own. "Green Grass" starts as an up-tempo country croon, but it's not long before they let the hammer down. As was de rigueur, the band pulls out all the era's stops, throwing drum breaks, dueling guitar leads that go on for about three days, and several false endings into the pot before The Big Finish. It's a great documented moment of a band at the height of both its own powers, and those of an entire era. --Steve GdulaCustomer Reviews:

Four guitars on Green Grass and High Tides - what more could you want?.......2007-02-03
So far as I'm aware, this 1978 offering is one of two live Outlaws CDs, the other being the (now hard-to-find) 'Hittin the Road Live' (1993). Don't worry if you can't get the latter, as this album is by far the better of the two.
The reason most people would buy this CD is, of course, for the finale, a mind-blowing 21-minute live version of "Green Grass and High Tides", a track which is surely a strong contender for "best-ever guitar-driven rock track". Though necessarily slightly less polished than the studio version, the live recording much more than makes up for this by the fresh atmosphere and excitement which it brings to this truly awesome epic.

Please don't bother. No amount of self indulgence is worth 20 minutes of your precious time. And by the way, they really aren't enjoying themselves either.

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.
Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.
Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.
Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.
The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

Jerry Goldsmith's death in 2004 marked the end of one of the greatest careers in film composing. This lavish 57 track 4 CD set traces the path of his astonishing achievements and includes recordings conducted by Goldsmith himself. Includes over 280 minutes of music.Customer Reviews:
Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

What stands out more when listening to this revival of the Cars and their cherished, iconic repertoire? The absence of the band's founding mastermind, chief vocalist/songwriter Ric Ocasek? Or the presence of Todd Rundgren, a semi-deified pop legend, as his replacement? It's Todd, by a landslide. Staunch Ocasek loyalists may argue that It's Alive--consisting of 15 live tracks (12 of them vintage Cars tunes) and three new studio cuts--is a disservice to the Boston band's legacy, but that looms as a minority viewpoint. Culled from three performances on a Southern California soundstage, the album unites two original band members (Elliot Easton on guitar and Greg Hawkes on keys--who, unlike Ocasek and original drummer David Robinson, still yearn to perform the group's music live) with Rundgren, bassist Kasim Sulton (who worked harmonic magic with Rundgren in Utopia) and drummer Prairie Prince (the Tubes). The result is an energetic paean to the Cars' power-pop heritage, capturing the band's classic feel-good vibe with all cynical subtexts intact. Rundgren, no stranger to creating mirror-like tributes to other artists' works (see 1976's Faithful), oversees almost note-for-note replications of Cars standards while slipping a little manic bite into selected lyrics ("You're All I've Got Tonight," "Bye Bye Love"). Two older Todd compositions--"Open My Eyes" (from his Nazz days) and "I Saw the Light"--make the cut, and amusingly it's the latter song, not a Cars track, on which he makes a brief lyrical flub. Rundgren is an inspired choice to fill Ocasek's role of wry lyrical observer, particularly with Sulton aboard as his heaven-sent harmonic foil. (The latter admirably handles lead vocals on "Drive," late bassist Benjamin Orr's signature song.) This disc's crucial new material--two thoughtful, midtempo, harmony-rich pieces and "Not Tonight," a witty, upbeat spin on 28-hour workdays--suggests the New Cars could be a worthy vehicle for Rundgren's polished pop instincts should the group stick together beyond summer touring. That may lead fans to start echoing the sentiment of this disc's closing track: "I want more." --Terry Wood

Album Description
Let the good times roll - again. This ain't your father's automobile, or your older brother's for that matter, but the emergence of The New Cars, comprised of original members of The Cars. Joining Elliot Easton on guitar and Greg Hawkes on keyboards is an all-star group of rockers: Todd Rundgren, fellow Utopia bassist Kasim Sulton, and Prairie Prince, former drummer for The Tubes. Each shares a passion for recreating the groundbreaking music of The Cars, one of the most successful (and influential) bands of the new wave era.Customer Reviews:

I admit to being a big Todd fan and always loved The Cars..but i do like this and hope they do more and tour.
New Cars are always better than Old Cars.......2007-04-21
Very impressive Cars semi-covers, but not the real McCoy.......2007-03-03
Todd Rundgren certainly had his own fame and interesting career, prior to joining the New Cars as the main lead singer and rhythm guitarist. Rundgren is frankly amazing in the way that he can imitate almost any style of rock/pop music, not merely doing "covers" but actually writing new music in the chosen style. For example, Rundgren once did an entire album of original Beatles-like music, imitating all the major Beatles styles from the rockin' early days, "acoustic" early middle period, psychedelia, etc. A very impressive imitation that album, but not quite up to Beatles originals. And Rundgren has also had his own prog-rock outfit (Utopia), and hard rock imitations, all extremely impressive. Though one wonders what Rundgren's "real" style is, or even his real musical interest. Is he just an incredible imitator? That wouldn't be quite fair. He's also known for more sentimental original songs such as "Hello it's me". So I suppose he's an amazing imitator with his own writing originality, as well as an outstanding musician. No surprise then that Rundgren could not only fill in for essentially the Ocasek role of lead singing and rhythm guitar, but could also write some entirely new Cars-like songs. The best of those new Cars-like songs being "Not Tonight". But much like his Beatles-like imitations, I find Rundgren's Cars-like song imitations really close, but not quite Ocasek.
My feeling is that if you were able to see/hear the New Cars tour in person (I didn't), it was probably hugely enjoyable. And if you saw one of these shows, you'd probably want the CD as well, as a document/momento of that tour. But even a well-recorded CD is not going to be nearly as impressive as seeing/hearing a live band in person. And frankly if you want to hear the original Cars playing live on CD, you can now do that. The sound quality of this 2006 offering isn't substantially better than the live shows captured 20 or so years ago, so why not get the "originals". On the other hand, if you have all the original live Cars recordings and want more of those songs live, or if you are curious as to how well this band pulled off the Cars imitation, or even if you want to hear if Easton and Hawkes altered their contributions a bit after all these years (they did, a little) then this is a worthy disc. Also, a couple of the Cars original songs get extended performances here, beyond the way these were played in concert or in studio by the original Cars, so those are well done and "new" in that sense. But for the songs which most closely imitate the Cars original performances, while these reproductions are somewhat amazing in how well they pulled it off, I would still just rather hear the original Cars as they performed live 20+ years ago. Given that the Cars "Unlocked" DVD/CD is now available, I'd certainly recommend that over this. Though probably some credit goes to the New Cars tour just to prod Ocasek and company into finally issuing that "Unlocked" set. So thanks New Cars, and very well done, but for Cars fans who didn't see the New Cars live, I'll say go for the original Cars live recordings first. And then if you do get this, just appreciate it for what it is, not what it isn't or what it couldn't possibly be.
Autopia!.......2007-01-12
It's the NEW Cars, people. Get over it!.......2007-01-03
1) This is NOT an album by the original members of The Cars. Thus, the name of the group: "The New Cars"
2) This is a LIVE album. Thus, the name of the album: "It's Alive". Don't expect a bunch of new songs. There are three, however. And, as with any live album, don't expect a recording of studio quality.
3) Ben Orr is dead.
So, GET OVER IT!
First of all, I was/am a huge Cars fan. I still remember the article I read about their first album, which said something like, "Why are all the good bands coming out of Boston?" (If you recall, the band Boston was also very big during this time period.) I remember hearing the "Panorama" album in its entirety, intermingled with interview dialogue, on some late-Sunday night radio program before it was even available in stores. (I recorded the show on my cassette recorder, and listened to it over and over before the album was available.) I remember buying the LP "Heartbreak City" and listening to it so often and so loudly at work that my boss demanded that I turn it down. I remember buying the "Heartbreak City" CD, as it was the first album I owned on both vinyl and CD. And I still feel that Ben Orr was one of the best vocalists in rock (and not just because of the over-played "Drive," either). A lot of great memories, for sure.
But, fast-forward 20 years past The Cars' last album of new songs, 1987's "Door to Door."
As you might guess, as a huge Cars fan, I was hesitant about hearing Todd Rundgren singing The Cars songs. It thought it'd be weird. And I wasn't sure whether it was going to be the "Bang on My Drum All Day" Todd Rundgren, or the Todd Rundgren who actually could sing. Surely, he would tear up these songs vocally, worse than Mick Jagger tears up 40-year-old songs by The Stones. Instead of purchasing "It's Alive," I streamed it during my trial period of a music subscription service. I was/am surprised!
Ben Orr's vocals are missed. The backup vocals are not very good. But I am impressed that Todd Rundgren and others, along with original guitarist Elliot Easton and original keyboardist Greg Hawkes, can replicate The Cars' songs with such accuracy. Some of these songs were released almost 30 years ago, and I am amazed that Greg and Elliot can even move their fingers fast enough to play them.
Sure, I wish Ben were still alive. Sure, I wish that Ric Ocasek and he were still sharing lead vocal duty. Sure, I wish it was 1978 again. NO, I guess I really don't wish it was 1978! It's 2007 now -- as of this writing -- and this is THE NEW CARS.
I'm not going to dis' any of those who rated this album low. They have their opinions. But keep in mind: This is a new lineup, this is a live album, and it was recorded in smaller clubs. If anyone really thinks these guys are in this for the money, I think he/she is sorely mistaken. From what I've read, Ric just didn't want to be involved in this band because he didn't want to tour any longer; I don't think he thought it was a ripoff idea. Even if he did, though, who cares? The Cars' songs are still GREAT! And The New Cars' renditions of these songs are admirable, in my book. Even the new songs are catchy, especially "Not Tonight" -- with both a live and studio version.
If you're not sure whether to buy this album, take a listen to the 30-second clips of each song here on Amazon. If you don't like what you hear on those, don't purchase the album. If you like the song clips, however, purchase the album. I think you'll be glad you did after you hear the other 3 minutes or so of each.

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Gosford Park Sound Track.......2007-03-30
Better than the movie.......2004-12-08
Why is this music so compelling and winning?
First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.
Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.
My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.
I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.
I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08
However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.
My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??
Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.
Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23
Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.
I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.
Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.
One the best soundtracks out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-06

When the Ramones left the confines of CBGB's in 1976--where they had developed their earmark three-chord speed delivery--and took the show on the road to England, they set the punk-rock juggernaut rolling. It can't be stressed enough how influential these boys from Forest Hills, Queens, were on Britain's emerging punk-rock scene, but a few seconds into It's Alive and it's easy to tell why. It's Alive captures the phenomena of the Ramones at their peak and in their element: live and sweaty. You've barely blinked before you realize that the first half-dozen songs have already raced past, their backdraft sucking the oxygen out of your lungs. "Rockaway Beach," "Teenage Lobotomy," "Blitzkrieg Bop," and "I Wanna Be Well" practically melt together in a three-chord melange, Tommy never letting up on the frantic beat and Joey pausing barely long enough to breathlessly shout, "Onetwothreefour!" before launching into the next set. The longest song here clocks in well short of three minutes, and many are hardly longer than one. Twenty-eight songs clock in under 48 minutes. Talk about a land-speed record. No subtleties of production or tweaking are needed here to capture the Ramones' live sound. Plug 'em in, turn everything up to 10, and let it rip. The sound of the manic crowd is practically organic. It's Alive is not just the best Ramones album, it is easily the best live punk-rock album of all time, and perhaps one of the best live albums ever set to wax. --Tod Nelson

This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Best Dance Remix CD from the 80's .......2005-09-23
OK NOW FOR THE FACTS.......2005-09-13
Basically, they have taken 8 of their best songs and "remixed" them in an edited form !! The result is that you have a CD capable of storing 80 minutes of music, that barely lasts 35 mins as they are all edited 7" versions.
I can't understand that amongst all the reviews here, no-one has bothered to mention this because i think it is crucial...the very title of the album "rip it up" suggests an extended cd compilation.
As for non-stop dance mix, it isn't , it's simply been passed through a nero editor to eliminate the 2 second pause between the tracks, nothing else.
Bitterly disappointing, would it really have cost them to compile the full versions ?
Dead Or Alive deserve a better tribute than this offering.

Product Description
Another long-awaited reissue of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' classic albums from the '70s is now available on CD for the first time ever. It's Alive was originally released in 1978 on the A&M label. This project is part of a continuing series of re-releases of the groups work, and will at last meet the demand of the long-term fans who have asked for many years that this Live album be available on CD. It is bound to attract new fans as well, with the same appeal the band's music has always had - rootsy, self-styled Americana that has withstood the test of time.Customer Reviews:

This is a classic.......2005-04-08
One of the songs is a very neat setting of "Satisfied Mind" played in the men's bathroom at McDonald Arena at Southwest Missouri State University, so that they could gather the acoustic sound of that area.
I've been looking for this to come out on CD for years, it's one of my favorite Daredevils albums. If you are a Daredevil fan, I'd think you'd need this one, regardless of which Daredevil albums you have, to fill out a good collection of this type of music.

As its title indicates, this 1985 recording marked Barbra Streisand's return to her Broadway roots (significantly, she had dropped her pop-period Guilty perm and returned to straight hair). The CD contains a broad selection of show tunes, from Guys and Dolls's "Adelaide's Lament" to Sweeney Todd's "Not While I'm Around." But let's face it: this may also be one of Babs's most dated albums, due to typically '80s synthesizer-heavy arrangements that simply don't work with the material. Company's "Being Alive" is scarred by a preening alto sax, while West Side Story's "Something's Coming" features what sounds suspiciously like syndrums. But--and it's a pretty big "but"--Streisand sounds more buttery than ever ("Send in the Clowns" may be one of her finest '80s moments), so much so that she often manages to overcome the cheesy production. Now that's a singer. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Learning About Love While Yearning.......2007-06-09
Just past the beginning of creating "What Times Are," a musical by (a) pacifist(s) as well as an adaptation of my play "What Time Is It, Neil Armstrong?," which is a sequel to my novel "How Did That Sun Get Out," I am inspired by the yearning apparent in "The Broadway Album"--a yearning not for perfection but for worthwhile ways for people all over the earth and in space to spend time.
