About the Artist
Playing music has always been a large part of my life. Growing up in Montreal, I was surrounded by all kinds of music, from traditional French folk music to the Montreal Symphony. My grandmother gave me my first piano when I was four, for which I am forever grateful. When we moved to the States (I was almost fourteen), my piano couldn't come with me, so I joined the high school band and learned the trombone. After a brief stint in a rock and roll band, I put aside my music for years. Four years ago, I decided to find an instrument that I didn't need written music to play. I have always been fascinated with the percussionists in bands; not the drummer, but the Latin, hand percussion. I bought myself a conga and learned how to play. I even took lessons, but the one main thing that my conga teacher taught me was that this Welsh heritage of mine made it very difficult for me to play "traditional" Latin rhythm. It seemed, however, suited quite well for folk and ballad type music. A couple of friends and I started a trio with two guitars, percussion and a little bit of keyboards for texture. Two years ago as I was entering a Native American show, I heard this beautiful sound coming from the back of the building. It sounded live, so I had to check it out. On stage was this woman playing some of the most beautiful music I had ever heard. It was Geri Littlejohn, and after she finished, she said that she and her husband, Hawk, made the flutes that she was playing and to visit their booth. I talked her ear off until she finally handed me a flute and said, "Play this." That was it. I was hooked. I had the wonderful opportunity in 1999, of going to the Feathered Pipe Ranch in Helena, Montana, to the Renaissance of the Native American Flute camp to study the flute with R. Carlos Nakai, probably the most well-known Native American flute player, and Ken Light, an extremely talented flute maker and player. Having an entire week to do nothing but play, play, play and learn a year's worth of knowledge was an unforgettable experience. Since the camp, I have let my creative juices flow. I am now a full-blown "flutaholic". I have had so many wonderful opportunities in the past year to share my music with others and learn more and more about this wonderful instrument. I was also greatly honored to meet and perform with Mary Youngblood on three different occasions. This journey is just beginning!
