Few recording producers and performers take the time and care to so intelligently exhibit a sampling of the rich and colorful American hymn repertoire. This thoughtful and varied program of hymns, Shaker songs, anthems, and spirituals shows what good things can happen when a top-rank choir and director and an accommodating record company join in such a project. The 20 selections come from a variety of sources, including The Southern Harmony (published in 1834) and The Sacred Harp (published in 1844). The Shaker tunes are from the vast collections at New Lebanon and Pleasant Hill, New York, and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Four of the six spirituals and several of the hymns are arrangements by Alice Parker; others are arranged by James Mulholland. The best choir out there.......2004-03-02

The Kansas City Chorale is a SUPERIOR vocal group. I am impressed by its large and wholesome sound that is produced by such a small group. The Alleluia CD is beautiful and also very diverse. "Sing me to Heaven" is gorgeous. The harmonies are beautiful on the page, but are even more beautiful when sung by this ensemble. "Alleluia" is also wonderful, and I was impressed by their interpretation of the many shaker songs and spirituals. This cd is a MUST HAVE for any choral singer or enthusiast.

My choir sang "Alleluia", and used this recording to learn the dynamics. A brilliant performance of that piece. The others are, too, excellent. Good balance, dynamic, and overall sound. But the "Alleluia" really stood out for me.

An Excellent CD.......2002-01-23

My pastor bought me this CD and I wasn't sure I'd really like it. Chorale music? You must be joking. But I popped it into my CD player at home and was immediately astonished at what I heard. The Kansas City Chorale have done an outstanding job of singing hymns of various types, most without musical accompaniment. Track 7 ("Encouragement") is my absolute favorite song on this CD. It is so beautiful to hear, especially when I crank it on my big stereo or over my headphones.

Bottom line: if you like chorale music, religious music, or even classical music, you will really enjoy this CD. The quality of the recording is very good.

A moving survey of American hymns.......2002-01-02

This is an excellent, deeply musical performance of a wide variety of hymns, Shaker tunes, and spirituals. The choices provide variety and a thumbnail sketch of a time in America when hymn-singing was a part of every week's activities. I agree with another reviewer that "Precious Lord" is a highlight. Also noteworthy is "Give Me Jesus" at the end. Both the singing and acoustics of the recording are top notch. I have already played this CD many times since receiving it two days ago. I'm ordering copies for friends! Among my many choral CDs, this one stands out as a favorite.

What a excellent CD! I got this for Christmas after going to a couple of their concerts and it sounds just as good as it did live. If you like chorale music then this is the cd for you. I personally know a man that sings in this group and is very talented singer along with the rest!

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

Annie goes down the elevator.......2003-08-04

This was one of the biggest disappointments in my music buying history. The first track is acapella which proves she can sing, but we already knew that; can we have some real rock music please! Without rock influences around her Annie drifted into some kind of new age lounge act. It sounds like elevator music. There are about 3 songs I liked which is why I gave it 2 stars.I have never been able to listen to the whole CD in one sitting since I bought it. The word Renaissance on the cover is misleading. That is not what you will get here.

Annie has always had an angelic voice,is still fabulous,but who are the other members of this "Renaissance"(it is actually credited to Annie Haslam's Renaissance,not as a pure solo effort. While her voice soars,is soothing and this makes for a great meditational piece of music,the musical backing lacks what vintage Renaissance had(chops I guess are out of style). This is more new agey than prog,which is good and bad (for old Renaissance fans).She was never a writer;I don't think she plays any instruments,and I don't see any songwriting credit on this (my copy is a promo). So, who is really behind all this ?

Having been very UNimpressed with Annie's second solo album released in 1989, I was pleasantly surprised by this third offering. Her voice, of course, is as perfect as ever and the songs are more varied and better arranged than previous albums. Best songs: Blessing in Disguise; Love Lies, Love Dies; A New Life.

A real blessing.........2000-03-03

Having known and loved Renaissance's music for quite some time, I was uncertain what to expect from Annie on her own. I shouldn't have worried. Beauty, feeling, her amazing voice, everything is still there. The music is a little less classical/folk-influenced and more diverse. "Love Lies Love Dies" annoys me a little.. probably because the word "love" pops up in almost every line. The same is true of "A New Life" - possibly the most cliched song Annie has ever done. But these are minor complaints. When you're in the right mood, this music is simply perfect.

A superb album by a sublime voice........2000-01-28

Her range and beauty of tone is unrivalled. A major talent that should be releasing MORE albums. Any collection from Renaissance to this solo album clearly showcases her amazing abilities and achievements. We all would love to hear this gorgeous voice more often.

Album Description

Shaker music is a unique body of American sacred folk music, created by eighteen American Shaker communities over a period of one hundred and forty years (1780-1920). This rich tradition of song continues to serve the Shaker community in the twenty-first century because it embodies their history, records the testimony of Shakers "who have gone before," articulates the religious principles on which Shakerism is founded, and reflects the faith of the contemporary community. Shaker music was created and nurtured in communities that prized isolation from worldly ways. Shaker melodies, although related to the larger tradition of Anglo-American folk songs, are not bound by their form, tonality, melodic or rhythmic structure.

The Enfield Shaker singers are a vocal ensemble of adults and children devoted to the study and performance of Shaker music. The group is open to all without audition, and is made up of both trained musicians and amateur singers. We draw heavily on the repertoire received or composed in the two societies that were the New Hampshire Bishopric—Canterbury and Enfield. Since the New Hampshire societies enriched their repertoire with songs from all the other Shaker communities, they also sing songs of the New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio and Kentucky Shakers.

The Enfield Shaker Singers are drawn to Shaker spirituals that illuminate Shaker communal values and broaden our definitions of the sacred. The songs included on this recording illustrate some of the many ways music served Shaker communities. Most Shaker song texts are theologically direct, emotionally honest, and expressive of our shared humanity.

On this recording we offer thirty-nine songs we have come to love. Some have special meaning for individuals. We associate others with a particular singer in the group, or an occasion when it was sung. Each song offers us slightly different insights into Shaker aspiration, and Shaker faith. Religious music from the 19th century.......2007-07-07

If one likes the songs of the Shakers written in the late 18th and early 19 century that were without musical instruments, then you may like this CD. I found 8 songs out of the 30 or more on the CD that I liked, the others I did not care for much. This is no fault of the creators of the Cd, it is simply the style of the Shakers of the past.

This CD is a delight! The simple melodies, surprising harmonies, and clarity of the voices makes you want to sing along. Listening makes one smile, regardless of one's religious persuasion. Thank you for giving us these songs and preserving the tradition of this music.

Album Description

The wind whistling through Arizona's Canyon de Chelly and songbirds that make that beautiful canyon their home, join the flute, drumming, and chanting of Native American performer, Perry Silverbird, in a tribute to his land and culture in The Blessing Way.

The listener is transported to a rocky ridge within the canyon as the sun rises and the birds awaken. Perry Silverbird begins the melodious poetry of his small reed flute. The music seems to spiral through the canyon, echoing off its massive red walls. As the sun moves higher, his drumming commences like the pulsing rhythm of the earth. Far away, there is chanting. It draws nearer and surrounds the listener with the cleansing of The Blessing Way, a sacred Navajo ceremony. Gradually, while the sunlight fades and the canyon turns to twilight, the chanting and drumming fade as well. When the lone flute finally ceases and the birds have nested for the night, all that is left is the wind whistling once again through the haunting darkness of Canyon de Chelly. The Blessing Way was recorded on location in the Navajo Nation's spectacular Canyon de Chelly (pronounced Shay), in the northeastern corner of Arizona. The musical performances are crystal clear and the sounds of nature are quite remarkable, making the combination both uplifting and calming.

Healing sounds, with one word - "Magical".......1999-12-15

I have been listening to this CD since this summer. I can see how much healing and soothing it has done for me and my soul. This music with the magical sounds of the wooden flute is very balancing and uplifting. The sounds are so profound to release all the tension amongst us. Very powerful! If I were you, I would have one CD at work environment and one at home. It is also very good while driving in rush hours too. Very well done. Thank you Perry!
