About the Artist
Lewis Ross’s father, a violinist, started Lewis out with classical piano lessons at the age of five. By the age of ten, the young Ross was a recognized prodigy. In his early teens, however, he happened to hear an album by the folk duo Gibson & Camp and was transported. His musical direction had been abruptly and permanently shifted to folk music, blues, and rock and roll. Guitars of all sorts, acoustic and electric, began to receive his focused study as he attempted to use the classical sensibilities of his years of training to serve the spirit of life he sensed in folk music. By his late teens, he was in a band that attracted the attention of a major record label, and he moved with the group from his home town of Detroit to Los Angeles. Although that early band never took off, thirty years later Lewis is still studying, writing, playing, and recording music. Among Lewis’s many credits are touring with folkies like Chad Mitchell and Hedge & Donna, writing and performing on childrens records for Scholastic, playing in Nina Simone’s backup band, and writing and performing music for Story Theater during its nearly two year run on Broadway. There is something truly remarkable that comes through in Lewis’s music. It is not just that he has incredible technique, or that he is a master of the ins and outs of melody and harmonization; it is something that was best put by another guitar player, who upon hearing Lewis play for the first time remarked, He plays as if his heart were in his fingertips

On nine of these pieces, Mr. Ross masquerades as the New American Guitar Ensemble by recording each arrangement one part at a time to create the ensemble sound. Still yourself... and listen to this fine work by Fernando Ortega. As you listen and think of excellent and noble things you will experience Grace and Peace in your world-weary soul. In fact if you see Fernando's name on it - - buy it. Like all of Fernando Ortega's music, The Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs does not disappoint!

A Most Relaxing and Peaceful Collection.......2007-07-01

This album was my first introduction to Fernando Ortega, and I'm absolutely hooked now. This has to be one of the most peaceful and relaxing collections I have ever heard. The melodies are beautiful and the words are so simple and pure (most are direct quotes from scripture). I even use it in my 3 year-old son's bedroom for lullabies. These songs make you think and reflect on God and His Son. I particularly like how Fernando blends scriptures from the Old and New Testaments into one song (Let the Words of My Mouth). I am an oncology nurse, and at the end of a stressful work day, I can listen to this in my car, and I am instantly refocused & refreshed. I wholeheartedly recommend this album - you won't regret it!

A Deeply Worshipful Album.......2007-02-24

I have grown to love Fernando's work. As I get older, I enjoy his music--it really draws me into God's presence, especially as I'm reading the Word or praying. Not all Christian music does that for me, but Fernando's does.

This album is wonderful, its pensive, thoughtful. I really sense that Fernando means what he says, that he's deeply into the music and not just creating another CD.

I really recommend this CD, it really helps draw you into the heart of God.

Diversity is more than just a buzzword for Donnie McClurkin. I love this cd albumn. I love it that Donnie McClurkin and the choir sings in so many different languages! I love the beat and the energy in each song. This is another spiritually uplifting cd, so joyful.....it's a joy to praise God with these songs. The spirit is truly with Donnie and this choir. I give God all the praise for this albumn!

This CD has a nice mix of hymns, praise songs and traditional songs from the black church. Both CD's are good, but i do prefer the first one. Favorite songs include:

Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This amazingly beautiful album to me is the soundtrack of Anatolia, of an era gone by when Turks, Greeks, Armenians and other ethnic groups shared their lives peacefully and harmoniously. Its sadness inevitably reminds me of millions who unnecessarily died on this soil in many wars fought in early twentieth century, of people forced to leave the only land the knew for unknown destinations and destinies, of the unimaginable hardships endured by its people. And more personally it takes me fom New York and puts me right next to my father's grave in a forgotten Anatolian village, 6000 miles away.

an artistic triumph.......2005-12-28

Peaceful, meditative, sad, introspective, deceptively simple. Classical. Coming from a deep sense of inner peace, like all things from the Work, but NOT New Agey.

Mystical.

Mr Gurdjieff sang or hummed his songs and Thomas deHartmann "wrote them down and added harmony". Hard to tell where Mr. G stops and deHartmann starts, but we will never know. Mr G speaks of Objective Music and the vast majority pieces of subjective music. This is the former.

I must confess that many other peformances and arrangements of the music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann, the way it was "supposed to be played", left me cold. Most of the other renditions I heard were played by those Drunk with Orthodoxy, amaturish or just plain lacking in musical ability.

This version is a revelation!

I think G would approve of this.

I like this, I think that the arrangements for cello and piano instead of just piano, as written, is an artistic triumph. The cello played by Anja Lechner expresses the peace and meditative sadness inherent in the music, even if that wasn't the way it's usually played. Composers are often not the best intepreters of their music.

That having been said there are three part to this music, pieces by G/deH, Tsabropoulos and then more G/deH and when the pianist sticks his own works in the middle of Mr G's the quality of composition falls somewhat. His compositions are or similar mood and type to G/deH, but really don't have the same achieve the same heights of depth and soul. (Mr G would say they are not Objective Music, I guess.) Perfomances of all pieces are uniformly good.

I would hope this group will arrange more of Mr G's music in this format in the future.

Interpretations of Gurdjieff's Music.......2005-12-14

You may want to pass this one up if you enjoy Gurdjieff's music as he intended it to be. To me these seem like rambling, flimsy interpretations of strong, articulate works (if you have heard any of the Kremski recordings, you know).

The arrangements do not seem to have captured the spirit of Gurdjieff's music very well. If someone did with Beethoven what has been done with Gurdjieff's music here, I don't think it would be taken seriously.

If you are interested in a new "twist" on Gurdjieff's music, then you may enjoy this. If you enjoy Gurdjieff's music closer to the way which he composed it, then you will want to look for a different recording.

Inspired Subjectivity Encounters An Objective Music.......2005-03-19

Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff's music was first given a broad public exposure with Keith Jarrett's recording "Sacred Hymns" in 1980. The public was perhaps already partly prepared for this music in 1979, due to the release of director Peter Brook's beautiful film on the life of G.I. Gurdjieff, "Meetings with Remarkable Men". The closing sequences of "Meetings with Remarkable Men" show the middle-aged Gurdjieff being taught about deep ontological truths through live performances of both music and dance.

In the 1920's, at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, Gurdjieff continued this work by collaborating with Thomas de Hartmann on creating an "objective music". A music that "would work upon all listeners equally, focusing their mental life and bringing them to a new relationship with the living universe". It is probably Keith Jarrett, who has worked closely with the Gurdjieff Societies of both London and New York, that has produced the most "authentic" or "objective" reading of Gurdjieff's music in recent years.

On this ECM New Series disc of 2004, "Chants, Hymns and Dances", Anja Lechner and Vassilis Tsabropoulos decided to take a more liberal, "subjective", approach. Their interest in these compositions is perhaps more "musical than philosophical". Their suitability for this task should be apparent. Lechner's most recent work has involved interpreting the music of both Armenian Composer Tigran Mansurian and the Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov. While Tsabropoulos, for his part, has worked with ancient Byzantine music and the music of the Greek Orthodox Church.

According to the informative liner notes by Steve Lake, "This music exists for the individual to make of it what he or she will, according to capacity". Lechner and Tsabropoulos both have deep experience with composed music and also with the process of free improvisation. Indeed, these two performers brilliantly interpret Gurdjieff's music with gentle assurance and a bright spontaneity. The five original compositions on this disc by Tsabropoulos even suggest an affinity with the Gurdjieff sensibility that borders on predestination.

"Chants, Hymns and Dances" is worthy of repeated encounter and remains serenely vital with each new audition. This is an ambiguous music that defies easy spiritual classification.

This is one of the most moving records I have ever heard. It is a must have for any classical music lover or anyone who appreciates deeply emotional music. So simple, so powerful. Wow.

GREAT CD OF INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC.......2007-07-04

I ordered this CD to get one song,"We Shall Behold Him",and was blown away by the two CD's. Sandi Patty has always been a favorite of mine but I have not heard many of the songs on these CD's. The old favorites are done with arrangements that give you goose bumps. And of course when I ordered this from Amazon I never knew I would get it so quickly. Thanks Amazon.

Extra bonus CD.......2007-03-10

Contains two CDs, both are great.... I can't decide which is my favorite. This is the best of Sandy Patti singing great hymns I grew up on and a few newer tunes. You will not be disappointed in her song selections and, as always, her fabulous voice which touches your heart and soul.

Spectacular!.......2006-12-11

Sandi's voice has never been better! It is so clear and warm and rich. Just lovely. And sincere. The songs chosen for this CD set are absolutely perfect. If you are a Sandi Patty fan, of course you will love this album. But even if you just enjoy a beautiful soprano voice and inspirational music, you can't go wrong with any of her CDs.

I just saw her Christmas concert the other night, and all I can say is "Wow!". She is even more incredible in person, if that's possible.

Much Anticipated.......2007-01-26

I have been looking for this CD for years!! Our family had a Shaw Chorale LP which contained almost all the songs on this CD. We had a number of excellent holiday albums and played all of them often, but we wore the Shaw Chorale album out! Not only are the musical renditions excellent and very similar to earlier Shaw recordings, the nostalgia evoked for this listener is incomparable!

A Taste of Heaven.......2007-01-18

I received this recording on cassette from a choral teacher, and played it so often that I wore it out! I especially appreciate the purity of sound and the arrangements in this recording. Lovers of choral music will feel as though "Songs of Angels" brings them a taste of heaven!

The Energizer Bunny.......2007-01-18

Alas that Robert Shaw is no longer with us. Throughout his long and varied career he gave us choral music with exactness,good pacing,and proper execution though not all musicologists would chose his renditions.
In "Songs of Angels" recorded in 1994 he shows us that even in later years he just kept going and going. Giving us stellar performances of masterpieces such as "Elijah","The Creation" and other large choral works. Yet in this album he shows the same attention to detail and
enraptures us with that special beauty of tone and ensemble which was
was to be Shaw's watermark on his life's offering.

This is one of the most impressive period albums I own. Wonderful for the holiday season. Will miss it during the rest of the year.

The Most Beautiful Sounds I Have Ever Heard.......2003-02-04

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain.

Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ones. This CD offers a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional songs on this CD.

If you can picture the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard you can come close to the joy this CD will bring you. It is February and I can't stop listening to it. You will not regret purchasing it&the only regret you may have is not buying all of Robert Shaw's holiday CDs.

I am writing this review to share the joy with you!

The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Unashamed Love - Travis Cottrell.......2005-08-30

When I first bought this CD, I didn't think that I was going to love it as much as I do. This is truly an anointed CD. You immediately feel the presence of God while listening to this. It is surely one of my personal favorites already. I didn't know anything about Travis Cottrell before purchasing this CD. This was indeed a worthwhile investment and I'm extremely pleased. It's so nice to know that there is still real praise and worship music out there that is truly praise and worship music. I've also got my hands on some junk - what I considered to be bogus "praise and worship" garbage. This CD is a must have for your library.

This CD is an incredible compilation of worship music, some that inspire energized praise, others than cause you to be humbled in the presence of God's Grace. My 4 year old requests "Sing," "Better Than Life," and "I Bow Down" pretty much constantly. And it's okay with me and my husband, because we like them, too. Our 4 year old sings at the top of his lungs while our almost-2 year old does his best to follow along. My 4 year old son has Autism Spectrum Disorder, and he has a very strong preference for Contemporary Christian music. This CD absolutely lights him up. Me, too.

This has to be one of the most anointed CD's that Integrity Hosanna has put out. The songs are incredible and we have shared it over and over with others.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.
