Great album, can't say much of anything else.......2007-02-07

i think that this album is up there with monsters and robots, though its not so much of a hard rock album, it has certain perks about it. For instance, there's some slow songs but when i hear Laswell on that bass, its so perfect with Buck. i love Inferno/heatseeker... it changes like 5 times in one song, its great. and other songs like Armed just make me crack up but its good. Highly recommended if you're into avant garde music.

this cd blends elements of colma,sacrafist,and a little trans to create a cool blend of styles!I'd definatly say this is a cd any funk/prog,buckethead,or praxis fan shouldn't be without.

The most under appreciated band........2002-02-07

Digressing from their first 2 albums, Transmutation(5 stars)and Sacrifist( 5 stars), Praxis unleashes Metatron. Trimmed down to a 3 piece with Laswell, Bucket and Brain covering all bases, Metatron lacks Bootsy's space bass, Yamatsuka Eye's agonizing screams or John Zorn's out of tune saxamaphoning, but it still rocks. track 1 is a laid back acoustic # and is absolutly beautiful. The album lacks the speed of some of Sacrifist's songs but makes up in phat grooves. Half of the Collection cd(again 5 stars) is from this album, but with nothing from Transmutation, hmmm. Instead of going further Ill' say this.... Get THIs Album at alll costs. Burn copies for friends and spread the gospel according to Praxis.

Goes down smooth..........2002-02-04

This is not the most technically brilliant Praxis album, nor is it the best produced, but it IS a "real" Praxis album (Buckethead is here, along with Brain), and it's pretty solid. Buckethead's faster riffs can literally blister your ears, while the slower ones manage to get under your skin no matter how simple they are. Brain's influence is heavy on this album, with a plethora of super fat beats that would make John Bonham proud. The heavier tracks like Skull Crack, Turbine, and Triad (The Saw Is Family) all feature hypnotically repetitive guitar and drum riffs, many of which are completely simple, but they still kick hard and make you slam your head methodically whilst visions of power tools gone awry dance in your head. Though these heavier tracks stand out most, the softer and more ambient stuff in between is decent too, featuring everything from pretty acoustic guitar to spacey funk, reggae, and dub. Overall, this album seems to "breathe" a little more than other Praxis album, with what may be a more consistent atmosphere, if you can ever say that of a Praxis offering. It won't rip your face off like Sacrificist, but a lot of people would assume that's a good thing. This one's a little fatter (or phatter, if your prefer) and a little smoother going down.

Buckethead buckethead buckethead.......2001-05-28

Buckethead plays on this as does Brain (Primus) and Bill Laswell (something in your CD collection, somewhere.) Some of the stuff is derivative and less developed that what Buckethead would lay down on Monsters and Robots, still a killer album despite the bad production.

One of the guitarists on the Testament DVD Live In London was wearing a T-Shirt with the word Suspiria on it and I'd like to know if it was referring to this band or not or if it referred to the horror movie.

Ok, apparently I am the only Darkwell fan here... I mean Darkwell before this album. One of the reviewers said that they seem like a work in progress even though they appear to be established. He actually hit the nail right on the head. Althouhg they have put out a couple (very good) albums, they recently had a line up shuffleing that has left them with a very different sound. When I got this CD i was immediatly dissapointed, simply because it didn't sound like the darkwell I knew and loved. However, after listening to it and giving it a chance I have fallen in love with it. There is definatly a new singer, and Stephanie has an .. interesting voice. I love it now, but was definatly unsure at first. If you want a more classically beautiful voice, look to Darkwells first album, Suspira. The music also sounds different on this one; more metal. It almost sounds like there are new instrumentalists, however I am not sure if this is true, and I don't feel like looking it up. However, the brains behind the whole operation, Roland, the bass player and lyricist, has remained, and keeps it beautiful. I definatly reccomend this if you want something different, and you may end up loving it, as I do. There are some very catchy yet haunting melodies on this cd, and Stephanie's voice is also very beautiful, but in an off-color kind of way... There are notes that she hits that are simply orgasmic, and other times it just sounds odd, but fantastic nonetheless. Actually she reminds me of Eponine from the musical Les Miserables. Almost every recording of les mis has an Eponine with this kind of voice; some people love it, others hate it... I just had to get used to it.. Its an acquired taste.. Now i absolutley love it. I have to go to work now, so I have to cut this review short, but If it's possible to write more than one review, I will returna nd write a breakdown of the cd. In conclusion, It's definatly worth it if you have the slightest interest in new and different music, espicially if you get it used. Also, DEFINATLY have a listen to Suspira, whether you like metatron or not; it is a totally different sound, and is what made me fall in love with goth to begin with.

Garbage.......2005-08-09

This cd is horrible. It sounds worse than a highschool garage band demo. I've been a musician for over 20 years, and live and breath this genre of metal, and I have to say, this is one of the worst cd's I've ever owned. The sound quality is cheap, the music is off key too often (it hurts to hear how many times she is flat), and the band tries WAY to hard to make time changes that simply are ill planned and poorly executed. It sounds at times as if they are trying to come off as a technical progressive band, however there is absolutely no talent evident in their changes or riffs. I've tried a couple times to listen through the cd, but honestly, I can't make it through a whole song they are so bad. Save your money and go buy a Therion or Tristania CD. This one is not worth it.

Pretty Interesting.......2005-07-30

This is definitely not cookie cutter modern metal/goth/femvox music. I still haven't quite wrapped my brain around what Darkwell is trying to do. I got the impression of a band trying something new that hasn't quite jelled yet, but it looks like Darkwell has been around a few years so that doesn't seem quite right.

I'd say Darkwell is more in the metal camp musically; the only gothy thing about them seems to be the lyrics. They have a more direct sound, almost hard rock oriented, than most bands of this type. If you like to feel the low end in your chest - you'll like this - the music in general, particularly the drums, is very present and upfront. Its almost as if you're sitting in with Darkwell instead of watching them on stage.

Stephanie Luzie has an unusual voice; I wouldn't go so far as to say its a love it/hate it thing, but it may take some getting used to. She's solid as a singer, but needs to develop some versatility - there is a sameishness about her delivery. Same thing with the band: there are good musical ideas - I particularly liked the way they try to integrate keyyboards into the music by using the character of the sounds a bit to drive the arrangements - but they would be well served by stepping father away from the "formula". The music doesn't flow as well as it could; better transitions, more unifying elements, and just polishing up the writing in general would help eliminate the disconnected feel that this CD sometimes has.

On the other hand, maybe this is exactly what Darkwell was going for - maybe they're just brilliant and I'm not getting it. Anyway, I'll stick to the work in progress theory, but I will say it is fun to be mentally challenged. Darkwell isn't one of the elites, at least yet, but I give them props for trying to move away from what is getting to be typical for this type of music.

Masterpiece!.......2006-07-30

This is one of my favurite top 20 records. Thios completely blew me away when it came out originally. I had never heard of Mark Stewart or of Tackhead. This is very very complex and advanced post-punk music without any compromise. at the same time it is also very very listenable. Also the people who back him up have become favourites since then like Adrian Sherwood and Co. This is very metallic-sounding new wave played with real instruments and real feeling. Also M Sterwrt's voice is chilling.
