This is the 2nd TD album I purchased (Exit was the first). I remember standing in my driveway at night waiting for my friend to pick me up. I had Force Majeure playing in my walkman. The sounds were simply awe-inspiring. After 20-plus years of listening to and collecting TD music, this album remains one of my personal favorites. The song "Cloudburst Flight" is, quite simply, and IMHO, one of the greatest musical compositions since the immortal Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart penned his first symphony. Absolutely astounding.

TD for life!

My first and favorite TD album.......2006-09-17

It was sometime in the early 1980's when I picked this 1979 album up (after watching Risky Business as I recall) and the band subsequently became part of my regular listening along with Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, Alan Parsons, Rick Wakeman etc. As a teen-aged progressive rock fan in the early 1980's, I was really impressed with the brooding and symphonic sound of the album. In fact as an adult, it stands as my favorite TD album along with Tangram (1980) and Rubycon (1975).

Following the departure of Peter Baumann sometime in 1978(?), the TD lineup was in a state of flux and the previous album (Cyclone) had actually featured a singer and a rock drummer. Although a singer was not used on Force Majeure, the rock drummer position was maintained and filled by Klaus Krieger. In terms of instrumentation, like all of TD's albums, pulsating, throbbing and spacey synthesizer textures dominate. However, in combination with the drums, acoustic guitars, and the vigorous electric guitar solos, this album has more of a prog rock feel; especially in contrast with albums like Rubycon.

In terms of the pieces themselves, the opening 18' 17" epic title track is a personal favorite and is symphonic in structure. Specifically, there is an opening movement with distinct themes, a spacey interlude, and then a closing movement. Come to think of it, there is really nice development over the course of this piece. Cloudburst Flight (7'27") is another excellent track and the combination of acoustic guitars and brooding synth textures at the introduction of the piece is very effective, even if I feel that the bass-like ostinato on the synth in the middle of the piece goes on for just a bit too long. The 14'30" closing track is also very good and features a nice mixture of spacey synths, drumming, and Edgar's electric guitar parts. Unfortunately, this piece also features a repeated theme that goes on for a bit too long but is not really that distracting and certainly does not affect the overall quality of the album.

I guess it's worth noting that the cover art featured on this webpage is not the trippy original art (by Monique Froese) that appeared on the LP and was reproduced for the 1995 Dutch "definitive edition" of the CD. However, it does appear that somebody was kind enough to post it.

Overall, this is a fantastic TD album and is very highly recommended along with Rubycon and Tangram.

True to its name........2005-09-06

Any true fan of music or beauty can appreciate this album, especially the title track, Force Majeure. It is as graceful and profound as it is amazing. Easily one of the greatest songs of the 20th Century.

One for the Centuries.......2004-05-01

I discovered this record when I was [quite young]...I'd seen Risky Business, which they did the music for, and my older brother had brought home a nicely transfered vinyl-to-metal tape recording of TD's music from college. On that tape's 1st side was Tangram and on side 2 - Force Majeure.
I heard the music and was floored...and needless to say my brother never got his tape back!

People, this is a record that makes a whole category of music at the shop justifiable. Most "New Age" is sappy dreck, however the music TD makes here is better than any label can suggest. When I think of 'space music' or 'Krautrock' that one can thoroughly enjoy - this is it.

There's NOTHING like getting comfortable in the dark and putting this classic on the hi-fi. It's like meditation in orbit - or an O.O.B.E. in your very own living room.

Not all that forceful at all........2006-07-12

After Warlocks Triumph & Agony the whole concept collapsed. This is basically a solo album despire it's billing as Doro + Warlock (at least on my edition).

And there isn't much to interest anyone. Perhaps had Warlock gone out with a whimper and not the T&A barnstormer which was five stars all the way, then the fall to this wouldn't of been so heavy. But ultimately this is a poor album of weak tracks attacked without ooommphh, without power, the self promoting lyrics about how ready to rock we all are wearing thin very quickly.

Notable exceptions would be the awesome, gentle lure of Beyond the Trees and there is also some pleasure to be salvaged from hellraiser and the cover of Whiter Shade of Pale is at least an interesting choice.

A serious blow to the esteem in which the metal community held Doro. This is a poor mish mash of soft rock quite possible stunted by a lack of confidence in the face of the enormity of being a solo artist.

A diamond by any other name............2005-07-18

It took a team of lawyers to strip Doro Pesch of the legal right to use the name Warlock, so she reminded us of who Warlock REALLY was - DORO!!
The name has changed, but the monster remains the same! Doro Pesch proved to the world that she is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time on this album, the BEST of her career! Once you get past her better-than-the-original cover of Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale", strap yourself in & turn the volume UP!! Every song rocks, even the ballads ("River of Tears" is the best of her career!), & by the time it's over you'll be ready for another, so get "Fight" or "Love Me in Black" too! Or, get the DVD of Doro & Warlock live from their 1985 tour. (She was maybe 20 at that time, & even the sub-standard audio can't hide the strength of her awesome voice!)
This is ONE OF THE TEN BEST METAL ALBUMS OF ALL TIME, & certainly one of the best 100 rock albums ever! If you like Heart, Vixen or Joan Jett you'll LOVE Doro!!

She Is What She Is.......2004-12-23

Did Warlock just change their name as Doro or did the vocalist start a solo courier? Or both? Well, you can think of it. The first Doro album starts with a cover ballad...one may say that it is extra strange but I say...it is a perfect start. It is a beautiful ballad and it makes the commercial thought out of it. After "Whiter Shade of Pale" starts the hard rock straight line...Save My Soul...World Gone Wild...Mission of Mercy...and Angels With Dirty Faces. After thinking about it you are a roundabout...but "Beyond the Trees" and "River of Tears" are quite good ballads. There's then some songs that don't fancy me "Hard Times", "Hellraiser", "Under the Gun" which are basic hard rock songs. "Bis Aufs Blut" is a great end for this album...and "I Am What I Am" is great too...it is a fast track and we rockers need fast hard rock tracks, don't we?

Doro Rocks!.......2002-07-04

This album contains an awesome cover version of Whiter Shade of Pale. Under The Gun is my favorite Doro tune period. Definitely one of the best Doro albums.

DORO'S BEST EFFORT - A REAL ROCKER!.......1999-06-11

ASIDE FROM THE ALBUM "TRIUMPH AND AGONY" BY WARLOCK, I ONLY LIKED A FEW OTHER SONGS HERE AND THERE SHE DID SOLO OR WITH WARLOCK, HOWEVER, THIS ALBUM IS GREAT FROM START TO FINISH! SONGS LIKE "SAVE MY SOUL", "HARD TIMES", "MISSION OF MERCY", "WORLD GONE WILD" AND THE BALLADS "BEYOND THE TREES" AND "RIVER OF TEARS" ILLUSTRATE HER TALENT, UNIQUE VOCAL STYLE AND SONGWRITING AT THEIR STRONGEST. JON DEVIN ALSO ADDS SOME VERY NICE GUITAR WORK THROUGHOUT! IF SHE HAD CONTINUED TO PUT OUT STUFF AS SOLID AS WHAT IS ON THIS ALBUM, I WOULD'VE BEEN A BIG FAN. :(

SOLAR PROJECT is, with fellow countrymen RPWL, one of the best PINK FLOYD-influenced bands of today. German musicians Robert VALET (Keyboards) and Peter TERHOEVEN (Guitar) recorded their first album under that name in 1990 ("The Final Solution"), and kept improving their art since. Published in the year 2004 on the Musea label, "Force Majeure" is already the sixth effort by the group ! This conceptual album deals with the influence of the forces of nature on mankind, as well as the brutal elementary power inflicted by the homo-sapiens onto himself. Musically speaking, the listener's going to find complex Progressive rock, sometimes heavy, sometimes gilmouresque. The own personality of SOLAR PROJECT shines all along those four long tracks (Divided in various parts), one of them reaching half an hour. Without any doubt, this release will be one of the absolute highlights of the year !

Fantastic Floydian music-Shame about the vocals.......2006-11-21

Along with RPWL, Solar Project are the new breed of Pink Floyd influenced bands coming out of Germany. The album starts off with the dreadful "Days of wrath". I will state first off that the lead vocallist, Bettina Wirtz, has a very heavy German accent, and it is the main reason for the deduction of one star. For example there is a line about Jesus being Crucified, but it sounds like "crucifoyed". There are many other similar examples of the heavy accent. ALso on the above mentioned track, it reminded me of , Heaven forbid, Mabloodydonna. Things change onto the next instrumental track though,the first part of "Thunderstorm". It starts off with beautiful Gilmouresque guitar and runs into a great climax before mellowing out again. The next part of Thunderstorm had me visioning of these Superhero cowboys riding on their horses coming to save the day (eg Bonanza/Magnificent Seven etc). Bettina sings again on this. It is more tolerable than the "Days of Wrath", but how they could have done with a Heather Findlay or Rachel Jones at the microphone. The next instrumental part of "Thunderstorm" is back to the Floyd influence with the slow heavyish guitar of "The Wall" era coming to mind. Dynamic guitar here. Track 5 is a Saxophone Acoustic guitar dual and is very nice. The Saxophone is played by Jade, but she only really appears on one other track, but is treated as part of the band. In cases like this, I would put that down to "Guest musician" only. Track 6 also features Bettina on vocals, and would rate as one of her better performances on the CD. Track 7 starts with the Floydian Slide guitar and reprises with the "Cowboy theme style" but gets ruined by vocals again.The Final part of "Thunderstorm" reminded me of another of Germany's Pink Floyd influenced bands of the 70s (i.e. Jane). Very nice and moody though, vocals included. Next theme is "Force Majeure" which is also split into parts, and it is straight into the Chunky Floyd guitar.Part 2 strays away from the Floyd music, and the so called vocals are actually REAL voiceovers of George Bush on the Twin Towers bombing, plus various other Presidents announcing the effect of the Pearl Harbour attack etc. The following part of Force Majeure mixes the Floydian chunky guitars and the theme music to the previous part and Bettina takes over the vocals. The end part of "Force Majeure" at just under 9 min. is thankfully another instrumental. The final theme "War" is in one part at just over 11 min. and features Jade again on SAxophone in part. Well, there you go, summed up. All I can end with to say is that this band could have the makings of a GREAT band. Musically, apart from the "Days of Wrath" track, I was very impressed, and although Bettina looks the part (Very beautiful and quite similar in looks to Heather Findlay by the Photo) she needs to find another band otherwise I dont think Solar Project will succeed outside Germany.
