5 out of 5 stars Perfect EP.......2003-03-03

This is everything a good punk EP should be: short, raw,and well-performed. This was DKM's first ever release, and it contains early recordings of "Boys on the Docks", and "Never Alone", which are on their debut LP, Do or Die,but in different versions. It also contains an early version of "Caps and Bottles", which didn't reappear until Sing Loud, Sing Proud. The other songs are "In the Streets of Boston", "Euro Trash", and "Front Seat". Even though this disc only has a grand total of 6 songs, I still consider it a legitimate DKM album, because it's 6 GOOD songs. I was lucky enough to find this in a local record store this past summer, but it's not the easiest Murphys album to find...so get it while you can!

5 out of 5 stars Ride in this time machine........2002-07-23

Although this record only came out a few years ago, the Dropkick Murphys have gone through a few major changes. Singer Mike McColgan departed for the Boston Fire Department, later to be replaced by Bruiser and Bostonian Al Barr, original guitarist Rick Barton, who was in his late 30's, settled down with his wife, opening two doors for James Lynch and Marc Orrell, and Ryan Foltz and Spicy McHaggis joined the crew. The Murphy's sound has evolved into a more accessible, more modern punk with a bit more traditional Irish flavor.

This album is a short and sweet showcase of the original DKM power. I personally favor Mike over Al, not because of talent level, but of the personality he gives the songs he sings. He has a raw, scratchy, yet perfect punk voice.

If you're a hardcore DKM fan, you probably already know all about this album. If you are a new fan, check this out. Welcome Mike McColgan into your ears and let loose with this. "Caps and Bottles" is the best thing ever, and so is "Front Seat" .... Not very radio friendly (a good thing), but excellent party music and a nice visit back to the early days of the band. It is too bad the DKM shows I've been to have omitted playing these songs other than "Boys on the Docks".

5 out of 5 stars The best EP ever.......2002-03-09

I bought this in '98 after first being exposed to DKM by Do or Die. I had never bought an EP before and had trouble paying ten bucks for only six trax. However, after their first full-length, I had to check this out. This disc turned out to be one of my best purchases ever.

Never Alone appears on Do or Die but the version is different. I prefer the other recording but this copy is good to hear something different.

Boys on the Docks is also on Do or Die, but as an accoustic version, which I thought was just okay. Here, the boys plug in the amps and this version is unstoppable.

In the Streets of Boston, is the only track I would consider less than outstanding, though it is still very good.

Caps and Bottles has an infectious chorus, and equally good versus.

Eurotrash has simple guitar work but you can't tell because the lyrics slamming pretty boy-techno kids are so damn good, and major synergies are created with the music.

The song that gets me the most is the sublime Front Seat. I can't help but get pumped when I hear this song. When I got into punk rock it was because I was an individual and I was drawn by what I believed to be a laissez-faire attitude by punk rock. I'm all about doing what you want on your own terms, without external forces pressuring you to conform. This definition, of and by itself, is descriptive of both punk rock and capitalism in their true, unaltered forms. This is why I get so sick of all the street-trash left wing punks who hate anybody who works for a living and doesn't degenerate like they do. They refuse to take control of their own destiny and want the government to do everything for them. The left wing punk rock politics are not consistent with the DIY mentality. That's why it's so refreshing to hear DKM relese Front Seat with lyrics like, "We'll take the front seat...liberal scum to the back!" ...

Okay Blah Blah I just love seeing reviews about these guys and having the band reviewed as right wing Skinhead music. The one guy who gave it 1 star watches to many news specials and allows his political views to overide his enjoyment of good punk. He has obviously never listened to or heard of Skrewdriver or The Klansmen, I do believe that he may reconsider his views on the Murphy's if he had ever heard real white pride music He just feels like being righteous and thinks he can drag everyone into his "world". The Murphy's are and always have been "Skinhead" music, just not neccessarily "Nazi" music. There are a lot of other ideals that "skinheads" hold. Working, making an honest living, supporting/ spending time with your family (the reason Mike McColgan left the band), not turning your back on your friends, unity, solidarity....etc. I gave up on the shaved head thing 8 years ago, but my views are still strong. The Dropkick Murphy's have been a large part of my music rotation for 4 years because not only are they excellent musicians (and I mean all versions of the band) they have some things to say as well. Boys On The Docks ep is a great early starting point for a band that has evolved well over the years. This ep is very strong working class punk (not that snotty So. Cal. crap that all the kids think is punk these days). Long live free speech, and whats so bad about having pride and honor about who and what you are anyway. So buy this album if you love good, old fasioned Oi! or if you are just proud to be who you are and want music that supports your feelings. Have a pint on me!

This is a fantastic album, with some of the best Oi!/Street punk I've heard since Dropkick Murphys. If you like punk, you'll love these guys. Their sound is incredible, and they blow most American bands out of the water. Should the masses request this kind of music, OXYMORON would give pop groups something to fear. I highly recomend this.

This album is the only one to feature Christian Lindersson (Lord Christus) who went on to St. Vitus (Children of Doom) and more recently Terra Firma (killer band as well). Excellent vocals - some say the best for the band, we say = "it's all good!". Great album, totally heavy - you need this if you are into old school doom metal. Cyclone. 2005.

Between 1857 and 1904, Tom Wiggins led a life fit for the big screen: He was born a blind slave, but his masters soon discovered his real value lay in his prolific talents at the piano. Billed as both "The Eighth Wonder of the World" and an idiot savant, Blind Tom (presumably autistic) could replay passages on first hearing, take requests from a list of 7,000 works, and impress the classical music critics of the Civil War-era with his stunning virtuosity--all the while scaring audiences with his inexplicable onstage antics. In the 1860s, he was earning $100,000 a year for his masters (and for the Confederacy), touring the country and Europe. Of course, this story has a sadder ending: After being traded numerous times by masters (and later "guardians") and eventually giving up his career--Blind Tom was buried in a pauper's grave.

On this insightful disc, 14 of Tom's original 100 or so compositions live on in the hands of pianist John Davis. While "Battle of Manassas" is perhaps Tom's most enduring piece, the entire disc is entertaining and playful. The music is a strange and wonderful mix of romantic compositions, gallops, marches, and a nocturne. Tom's music is charming--he imitated nature sounds ("The Rainstorm," composed when Tom was just five) and sewing machines ("Sewing Machine")--and, at times, sophisticated. Davis has a true love for this music and the liner notes--including an essay by Amiri Baraka--are extensive. In short, it's a enlightening discovery and a fun disc for all piano lovers. --Jason Verlinde

Blind tom is so awesome! When youn listen to his music you can actually see what you hear. For example, Rainstorm, you can just imagine yourself lying in bed one night when suddenly you hear the sweet trinkle of rain fall to your windows. Then out of no where you hear storm clouds and lightening , just to come back to the serene droplets serenading your dreams. I recommend this to any pianst who loves dynamics!

5 out of 5 stars This Album is Addicting.......2003-02-26

I, too, saw the interview with John Davis on Nightline and ordered the album. This is wonderful music, stirring, descriptive, evocative and beautiful. John Davis'interpretive and technical skills bring it to glorious life. The album begs to be played and over and over, and contrary to becoming tiresome, becomes more beautiful and meaningful with repetition.

I should think that no music lover could hear it without becoming fascinated with the melodies, the cadences and without a doubt, the history behind it all. Where did this beautiful music come from? And did Blind Tom play it with the sensitivity that we hear in John Davis' presentation?

Fourteen of Blind Tom's compositions played by John Davis is not enough. Mr. Davis - more, please!

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story, what beautiful music........2002-09-17

I first heard about this story on ABC's UpClose; an interview with the pianist, John Davis, about the life of Blind Tom Wiggins, the composer of this beautiful, lilting music. John Davis researched the Georgia slave and possibly savaunt musical prodigy of the mid 1800s, and came up with as many as 100 compositions this blind man wrote. Mr. Davis played a few pieces on the show and I knew I had to have the CD. Since I enjoy semi to classical music on the order of Chopin, Mozart, Offenbach and Ragtime music by Scott Joplin, and others, I had goose bumps when I heard the whole CD. You want to hum, tap your feet, and just take in this mans' melodic music. There is a little bit of Chopin and Joplin intermixed and I thought the sound of the piano and pianist were excellent. One should know the story of this composer and realize what he went through; but there's also a happy ending of sorts. I am just a consumer, but I recommend this CD highly.

          5 out of 5 stars Timeless music.......2002-02-24

John Davis plays Blind Tom is a composition you can put in your computer - surf the web, relax in leisure when listening, admire, feel good about, or just plain loose yourself in the music.

One of my favorite music CD's. When I wish to listen to great music composed by a true master of the piano, Thomas Wiggins, I find this CD greatly satisfying. I find track 14. Reve Charmant--Nocturne especially relaxing. Of course, "Battle of Manassas" and "The Rainstorm" are synonymous with Blind Tom and these are his most popular compositions. I was surprised to find on this CD many other great songs; I had previously not had the pleasure of hearing. Oliver Galop is a short, energetic song with youthful rhythm. Cyclone Galop is the style and creativity only of Tom.

Included with the CD is a booklet, which provides good detail of information of Tom's life. The first history of Tomas Wiggins provided is written by John Davis, a well-written short story, others include Ricky Jay, Oliver Sacks, and finally Amiri Baraka.

For the most part forgotten in American history, Blind Tom's music is truly inspiring. I greatly admire Tom's music creativity, not to mention John Davis's recreation of this unique music. I rarely purchase classical music although this CD was unexpectedly surprising. I cannot express myself enough about the quality of this recording.

I would love to witness more of Tom's compositions reintroduced. A great compilation of fine music, bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Glimpse into the past.......2001-09-28

John Davis very lovingly plays these "tour de force" works by a composer whose name is usually known only to historians. While Mr. Davis has an obviously solid keyboard technique, his interpretations go beyond notes on a page. They bring new life to this now all but forgotten musician. He plays the music with unusual insight, devotion, and expertise. A joy to hear over and over again. Recommended very highly.

          4 out of 5 stars grandmaster spanknugget.......2003-06-29

this cd is great. especially when i got it for free and had the band sign. it was payment from the band because my band gave them all the door charges when they played with us in my town.

          5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2001-05-27

This band is awesome, the best cd on Amazon.com. Extremely hard to find at a relatively good price. If you like punk like violent soiety or crass, then you'll enjoy this one. I have taken this cd with me everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Punk Band of the Decade.......2000-02-09

That's right, the Boils are my number one pick of punk rock from the 90's. They take the best elements of multiple sub-genres of punk and mix it together in a unique and exhilirating way. The belted-out choruses are courtesy of such street punk/Oi! bands as Blitz, the speed and fury are similar to bands like Violent Society, and the tempo changes and breakdowns are reminiscent of hardcore punk along the lines of Agnostic Front or Minor Threat. The lyrics are both poetic and immediate, full of insightful social commentary without resorting to awkward slogans and political labels. This album is a flawless synthesis of all the great punk that came before them, and one of the few examples where punk has *improved* since the eighties. Buy this album, and see these guys live if you ever get the chance. In ten years people will talk about these guys the same way they talk about the Dead Kennedys now.

          5 out of 5 stars john's underwear's in my closet.......1999-09-18

well, greg, john and mike have done it again. i have been a BOILS fan since their $3 vfw and community center shows, and they are very cool.

their last cd, when the sun goes down, was great, and their new one, WORLD POISON, is even better. buy, borrow, beg, steal, do whatever you need to to get this cd. it is definately worth it. happy punking.........
