Customer Reviews:
Magical and transporting!.......2006-10-02
The first of three CDs released recorded by harpist Lisa Lynne (Franco) and recorder player David Young, "Celestial Winds 1" is a generous 73 minutes of calming enchantment. It is actually a compilation drawn from the duo's first four cassette tapes: "Harp & Recorder," "Sweet Dreams," "Celestial Wind III" and "Christmas Classics." A few of the songs interpret traditional songs ("Scarborough Faire," "Greensleeves") and the last track is a lovely version of John Lennon's "Imagine," but most of the other songs are engagingly and distinctively original. As in all her later albums, Lynne's harpistry is elegant, mesmerizing and relaxing, but here she plays in a sparer setting, with only the whimsical recorder improvisations of David Young rather than a whole group of other instrumentalists. The breathy, rustic tone and indistinct intonation of the recorder lends a special quality to this music--ancient and mystical, but at the same time very approachable. Young often plays two recorders at a time, taking advantage of the different tunings to produce complimentary harmonies that can be played with only one hand each. (Some recorders--the soprano, tenor and garklein--are pitched in "C", that being their lowest note, while others--the alto, bass and sopranino--are in "F." Thus the same fingerings on the top holes of each can produce notes that are far enough apart to be distinct, but close enough together to form chords. If you happen to have a C and an F recorder, try them out together, with each one sticking out of an opposite corner of your mouth. And feel free to twist one or both of the head joints around upside-down, keeping the finger holes facing upward, if that proves to be a more stable position. It's a fun technique to play around with!) If there's any question about Lisa Lynne being properly compensated for her contributions to this album and the two subsequent Celestial Winds CDs ("Christmas Morning" and "Oceans of Love"), they are also available directly from her through her website, www.LisaLynne.com. Try also the later CDs of Lisa Lynne and friends, and the flute and harp stylings of Kim Robertson, Bettine Clemen and Steve Kujala in "Love Song to a Planet" and "Wild Iris."
WOW! Bought this 8 years ago at Venice Beach.......2004-04-09
While at the Venice Beach on a weekend, they were there playing and of course selling music. I was entranced, how beautiful the music and how relaxing. I then saw them at City Walk years later and nothing changed, still the same beautiful music, not to mention how angelic Lisa Frank looked.
Wonderful! Very peaceful, relaxing........1999-05-24
I highly recommend this CD for unwinding after a stressful day. Very soothing, relaxing sounds. I had the privelege of seeing them in person a few years ago, and I was absolutely amazed that the full melodic sounds I was hearing were being produced by only 2 people! I bought this CD on the spot and have been trying to figure out how to get more of their music ever since - thanks Amazon!

Album Description
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:25)
A lone man serenades his lover while standing underneath her window. A couple is dancing cheek to cheek while their favorite song is playing on the radio. Former lovers lock eyes across a smoky room to the strains of a tinny piano. These common romantic images show the important link between music and romance, a link that movie producers have been aware of for a long time. Music is able to express the ecstasy and despair of romance without having to awkwardly describe these emotions in words. That is why
The Romantic Approach is a unique recording - it includes music written by some of America's finest composers that expresses the full range of emotions felt while being in or merely wanting to be in a romance.
For example, Duke Ellington is a master at conveying the first rush of heat felt when meeting the gaze of an attractive person for the first time. His jazz-influenced Village of the Virgins is a very sophisticated and passionate piece. In contrast, George Gershwin's Lullaby expresses a more innocent attraction, reminiscent of shy glances rather than bold stares.
In many romances, feelings of love are not returned or there are obstacles to be overcome. John Cage's Dream conveys all the longing of an unfulfilled romance. The piece begins slowly, almost as if the musician is too weak to perform, but at times accelerates in a flurry of notes as some memory comes rushing back to the dreamer. Similarly, the solitary blare of the trumpet on Quiet City by Aaron Copland imparts a lonely quality to the piece. This song will make you hold your lover close as you imagine a city full of anonymous people looking for the relationship you and your lover share.
The feeling of being swept away is also a part of every good romance, and Elliott Carter's Elegy is the perfect manifestation of this experience. When listening to this beautiful work, great historical romances such as that of King Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson are called to mind. The intense beauty and power of love are also excellently portrayed in Samuel Barber's Adagio. There is a sad element to this piece as one remembers that romance is precarious and fragile.
True to the Romantic tradition, the music on this compilation centers on the sounds of bowed strings. From the multi-tracked viola used in Cage's gentle and haunting Dream, to the string quartet arrangement of Gershwin's Lullaby, to the massed string orchestra of Copland's evocative Quiet City, the sonorities of bowed strings provide continuity through the whole collection. These works and several others round out this fascinating collection of American music that takes as its theme the adventure of romance.

Album Description
What makes music Romantic? Like beauty, Romanticism is in the eye - or ear - of the beholder. As a musical movement, it is generally associated with nineteenth century Europe though the Romantic movement actually originated in Germany. In this exquisite trilogy of romantic classical music,
The Romantic Approach explores the origin of music Romanticism, French and Italian romantic music, and 20th century American romantic music written after the end of the Romantic era.
The first volume in this trilogy,
The Romantic Approach: A Special Collection of 20th Century American Music may have surprised listeners who felt that contemporary America has produced very little Romantic art. The diverse roster of this century's finest composers also reflects the diversity in the music, from jazz influence to classical. This collection of works echo the lyrical, tonal style of European classical music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Two: A Special Collection of Classical Music from Italy and France showcases the very heart of Romantic literature. Of all the countries in the world, France and Italy have been those most associated with things romantic; even the sounds of their languages are musical, and that songlike quality has certainly colored much of the music of these two countries. Some of the works and composers on this volume will be familiar to opera lovers, a central part of the musical life of these countries. It is rounded out with unjustly neglected masterpieces from several gifted French and Italian composers.
The Romantic Approach, Volume Three: Classical Music from Germany takes us back to the origin of the Romantic movement - to Germany - and to the emotional works of its greatest composers. These composers could move their listeners without having to resort to painting a particular image in sound. This is music that can speak to the emotions without dictating which emotion you should feel; in fact, it can evoke a different vision or story in each listener.
