At a time when experimentation is taboo in most overground rap, that's all Outkast seem intent on executing. Firstly, this double CD has no cohesive link, other than the fact that it sounds like a pair of solo albums stitched together to demo exactly how Andre's yin works to augment Big Boi's yang. Andre 3000's Love Below disc rates as the more eclectic of the two, given that he's turned in his emcee credentials to become a full-on funk-soul-jazz vocalist who mostly sings about items of love ("Happy Valentine's Day"), carnal lust ("Spread"), and female adoration ("Prototype"). Minus the big band schmaltz of "Love Hater" and cheesy cover jobs ("My Favorite Things"), Andre's disc is sick (meaning great). As is to be expected, the Big Boi disc is less arty, more gangsta and worldly, and features the less-progressive guest raps of ATL crunk purveyors Lil' Jon and The Eastside Boyz ("Last Call") and Jay-Z who rhymes the hook on "Flip Flop Rock". Unlike Big Boi, Andre keeps his collabos to a minimum, once crooning alongside Norah Jones on the cool yet sappy "Take Off Your Cool", and once with Kelis. Boi fulfills his Dungeon Family duty with flying colors by flipping some dirty southern up-tempo raps over electro beats on "GhettoMusick". By the time Cee-Lo sermonizes on "Reset", Speakerboxx and Love Below rate mostly as majestic and inspiring, with the remaining 23 per cent being just plain incredible --Dalton Higgins

4 out of 5 stars Andre was great but Big Boi was questionable.......2007-06-04

I think that Outkast's Love Below/Speakerboxxx is unfairly bashed. Andre 3000's album was very innovative. Of course its not a hip hop album but its a creative album with hip hop elements added to it. When any great artist wants to break free from the tedious trend of rap or they just dont want to be confined to just hip hop only they make albums like The Love Below and Electric Circus. The only down side of this project is Big Boi's side Speakerboxxx. Standout Tracks on The Love Below: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY(crazy), SPREAD, PROTOTYPE, SHE LIVES IN MY LAP, HEY YA(before it got played to death by radio), ROSES, BEHOLD A LADY, DRACULA'S WEDDING, MY FAVORITE THINGS(even though its an instrumental Andre hooked it up) and A LIFE IN THE DAY OF BENJAMIN ANDRE(100 bars without slipping a step. FIRE!). Filler: Love Hater(awful) and Pink And Blue(not horrible but i cant get into it at all. Bottom Line: Andre 3000's The Love Below puts Andre above the average just by creativity alone. Not a dull moment on this side of the album. Standout Tracks for Big Boi's Speakerboxxx: GHETTO MUSICK, THE WAY YOU MOVE(before the radio killed it), WAR(Big Boi dropped some gems on here. I'll give him some credit), KNOWING, FLIP FLOP ROCK and RESET. Filler:Unhappy(garbage), Bowtie(what the ? is this?), The Rooster, Tomb Of the Boom(all those people on it and it still stunk),Bust(Killer Mike's verse was cool but the song is still suspect) and Last Call(the worst song on here and was Lil Jon on the hook necessary?). Bottom Line: Big Boi's Speakerboxxx is an obvious rush job. Besides the songs mentioned as standouts, the rest of the album is as bland as wheat bread. As a whole The Love Below/Speakerboxxx should not be missed by any OutKast fan. Andre 3000 side alone makes this a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album Ever!!!.......2007-04-13

These are my favorite albums of all time. These albums completely changed me and my prospective on the world. Once I finally got into this double album I felt that anything was possible. It took me about four listens all the way through both discs to really wrap my mind and spirit around it and truly feel how ridiculously amazing and ground breaking this album really was. If OutKast could put so much of their heart and soul forth and put together such a perfect funky, soul, ride of a double album and still teach, move, and inspire so much than there is no telling what I or anyone else could really do. These albums were the first and only "Rap" album to date to ever win the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2003 , but these albums are so much more than "Rap" albums. As a matter of fact Andre 3000's disc "The Love Below" has only four rap verses on it (three by him, one of which goes for the entire length of a song on "A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre (Incomplete") and one by Big Boi). These albums perfectly meld together every genre, feeling, and vibe without taking one millisecond for a breath of air. These albums can be a little hard to keep up with, but if you let Big Boi and Andre 3000 pull you through their kaleidoscope world at their own break neck speed you will not be sorry. Every single song on both discs are amazing, no need to skip. Both discs are completely different Big Boi's disc "Speakerboxxx" is just so perfectly cool and straight up playarific and Andre's album is like nothing you have ever heard (I 100% guarantee that). These albums sound like they fell off a comet from outer space, because they can't possibly be from this planet. By the end of these albums you will be saying stank you smelly much OutKast, stank you smelly much (once you listen to these albums you will understand what I just wrote and I guarantee that you will at least think that).

P.S. It took me four years to get to writing this review. But I wanted to make sure I did these albums justice and listened enough to know every nook and cranny(although every time I listen I hear something new) and I also make sure I described it as best as I could. Although I could describe it a million times better, I needed to get this up already.

4 out of 5 stars 3 stars for tlb ;; 5 for speakerboxxx.......2006-12-21

the love below was okay, but not really my style. if you like more r&b, or slow rap songs, you will probably prefer this cd. i prefer big bois cd much more. i like "harder" rap and all the guest stars. this is still a great collection of songs, and deserved all the nominations it received.

5 out of 5 stars Rap isn't what it used to be, but these two will continue to carry it a long way.......2006-10-23

This double album (one disc by each member), is simply one of the greatest artistic achievements rap has ever seen. You just can't sit down anymore and come up with something like "Happy Valentine's Day" or "She's Alive" in 5 minutes. It takes a brilliant mind to create rap music that is as deeply enchanting as this.

5 out of 5 stars The best Outkast's Album.......2006-08-28

I have been an Outkast fan for almost 10 years. I have got every album they released since Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (which was hard to find in France), released in 1993-1994 in France.
According to me, this double album is their best, even better than Atliens, their second album, which was my favourite before I hear Speakerboxxx / The Love Below.
The strength of this double album is the diversity in music style : hip hop, rnb, jazzy, soul... The overall quality of "The Love Below" sounds higher to me, but Speakerboxxx features some masterpieces like "The Way You Move", "The Rooster", "Flip Flop Rock"...

robin trower for earth below. its a good, if not above average robin trower recording. a very even effort building upon the foundation laid on twice removed from yesterday and adding new guitar textures to a good blues rock sound all in all a very good record!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! robin trower live! this is the one that put robin in heavy rotation on the a.o.r. f.m. radio. a great quick shot of robins live set up until the mid 70's. i wish they could find complete concerts from this era of robins career because he was on fire during this time.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Trower Albums At One Low Price.......2006-08-01

FOR EARTH BELOW/LIVE is a single-disc compilation of two great Robin Trower albums from the 70s. LIVE is one of the best live albums ever released, and FOR EARTH BELOW was a great follow-up to the exceptional BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Any serious fan of blues-based rock & roll should own this one.

5 out of 5 stars Two Of Trower's Best.......2006-07-10

Any rock fan knows that "Bridge Of Sighs" is one of the best rock albums of all time.
But if you love "Bridge" you must have these 2 albums. "Bridge" is an A+ but these are both A's. "For Earth Below" is an incredible follow up to "Bridge". It keeps the same feel but the song writing is even tighter. "Trower Live" is one of the best live rock records ever made. The feedback ferocity and finesse on "Daydream" is worth the price alone. If you like Trower, these are must have LP's.

4 out of 5 stars Great Artist, Poor CD Quality.......2006-02-25

Robin Trower deserves 10 stars. Problem is, this CD sounds like it was recorded to cassette first and then burned on a CD later. Very "muffled" sound and needs to be turned up higher to get the same output as other CDs in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar never sounded better.......2006-02-10

The critical album on this release is "Live." Anyone curious to hear how good an electric guitar can possibly sound should purchase this CD. Trower deals in both overdriven and clean sounds with his Fender Strat, and his use of effects like the wah-wah pedal and the Uni-Vibe, while sometimes drawing unfair and shallow comparisons to Hendrix, is unparallelled in grace and style.

When Trower unleashes a sustained feedback note (i.e. near the end of "Daydream"), I want it to last thirty minutes. But he's also capable of dramatic bursts and flurries of notes, punctuated by bends and whammy bar workouts ... as Robert Fripp himself noted, Robin Trower has mastered the "bends and wobbles."

During the last solo of "Lady Love," Trower plays a pinch harmonic that is THE sweetest single note I ever heard, anywhere.

Jimmy Dewar lays down a great bass groove throughout - and his voice is quite powerful. He has a rich, soulful vibrato that compliments the music nicely.

Bill Lordan is a good, jazzy drummer, although occasionally his cymbals do clutter the sound, especially on the live album. But let's face it, the reason we are all listening to this is to hear what Robin is gonna play next :)

I could write pages about how great this CD is - do not wait a minute longer. Order it!

In the beginning--well, in the early '90s, anyway--there was grunge. The sound from Northwest bands like Mudhoney and Nirvana sliced razor-sharp punk into thick slabs of Black Sabbath-influenced metal to forever fray the mainstream public's image of straight-ahead rock & roll. As the '90s creeped on, rockers like Stone Temple Pilots and Bush were taking the fringes of the Seattle sound and smoothing them into modern radio rock. In 1994, the Texas band the Toadies stepped up to the post-grunge plate with the major-label release of Rubberneck. The album went platinum and the single "Possum Kingdom" hit the alternative and hard-rock radio circuit pretty hard. The critics scratched their heads, though, claiming the band was just a bland reworking of the classic Nirvana sound.

Seven years later, the band released their Rubberneck follow-up, Hell Below/Stars Above, and critics are still scratching their heads. The album offers highly charged, raw-throated vocals and a wall of aggressive rock built on solid bricks of distortion ("Sweetness," "Plane Crash," "Push the Hand," "Heel"), but it still lacks the intricacy and hooks of, say, a Foo Fighters album. Sure, there are some slower songs ("Pressed Against the Sky") that give front man Todd Lewis a break from the testosterone rants, but overall Hell Below feels like one long song of Warped Tour-era rock that too easily blends into itself. --Jennifer Maerz

5 out of 5 stars Another perfect record from Toadies, and their last........2007-05-31

This was their second full length and their last as a group. Just like "Rubberneck", this is one cd that does not get old. It just has a level of fun and song variety that keeps things fresh. There are some heavier songs that you can rock out to, and some mellow, sing-along stuff with awesome hooks that will stick in your head like peanut butter. As always, Todd Lewis' vocals are without equal. He has one of the best sets of rock pipes that I've ever heard. This would probably fall into the grunge, hard rock, alt. rock categories, but it really should appeal to anyone who is a fan of flat-out, fun rock music.

4 out of 5 stars great alt-Rock.......2007-03-03

This is a great cd. great 90's sound. if you were into alt stuff like PJ, Soundgarden, AIC or the like, you will probably like this cd. While 'Rubberneck' was great, this CD isnt a bad follow up by any means. Tracks like "Plane Crash", "Hell Below...", "Little Sin" and "youll come down" are great Rocking songs. Then they have the slower paced tracks like ""What we have to Steal" and "jigsaw Girl" to balance out a really good CD that would (unfortunately) be their last.. Must have right along side of 'Rubberneck' if into that genre of music. a grunge era classic! 4.3..

4 out of 5 stars Push the hand...of the critic.......2006-12-07

While not up to the caliber of Toadies' only other relase, Rubberneck, this is still a finely put together rock album. The drawback was that it took 7 years to release, cementing the band's demise from rock's (near) stardom.

While not as muscially and lyrically catchy (or as dark) as Rubberneck, Hell Below/Stars Above still manages to rock. It's just a little more disjointed. Push the Hand, Plane Crash and Heel are more "Rubberneck-ish", unlike the curiously sappy Dollskin, or the curiously inane Hell Below/Stars Above. Todd Lewis' voice is still the highlight of the album, just this time the lyrics behind his amazing rock voice are a little less powerful and a little more silly ("We know what we really want...we know what really want...). Even so, Toadies still managed to put out a rock album that defied the notion of what a rock album was. 1994's Rubberneck was unlike anything grunge could produce, and 2001's Hell Below was unlike anything that System of a Down (and the like) would produce. Both were a fine distraction from the other mediocre rock/metal the rock/metal world insisted on vomitting on us.

I question why this album took 7 years to release. I questioned it in 1996...and 97, 99, 2000...every year that passed by without a Toadies album. The buzz and hype around Toadies circa-1994, 1995 was huge. Tours with rock's biggest bands of the time, like White Zombie, should have solidified this band's place with the music elite. Instead, they sat on music for years and put out an album that while not mediocre comparative to other music of the time was mediocre to the freshman album this sophmore act released in 2001. Thus, I also question whether the critical acclaim (or lack thereof) of this album really caused the breakup of one of rock's finest diamond's in the rough.

Whatever the case, Hell Below was and is a nice distraction from the puke other bands have forced on people in the past 6 years. Not up to Rubberneck standards, but a fine album nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS.......2006-09-13

I bought this album the day it came out. I feel no need to discuss any specific aspects of this album. This is a Toadies album, and that fact speaks for itself. There are not enough stars to give this album.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-08-10

I bought this CD because I love Rubberneck and because reviewers seemed to agree that this was album more of the same. I was disappointed, though, and would say that there are only 3 songs worth listening to on this album. The song writing seemed stale and lacked the creativity of Rubberneck. I listened to it and thought to myself - Well, I guess this is why the band the band broke up.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Like Fleetwood Mac would five years later, Steeleye Span had lost its most celebrated members, Fairport Convention alumnus Ashley Hutchings and guitarist Martin Carthy, when they reconvened in a comparatively anonymous lineup that proved to be their most successful. This 1972 album found vocalist Maddy Prior and guitarist Tim Hart (who'd worked as a duo prior to joining Steeleye) taking the reins, with violinist Peter Knight providing an instrumental foil for the then-drummerless quintet's electric and acoustic guitars. Prior's regal alto and a carefully chosen program of traditional songs (including a medieval Christmas hymn, "Gaudete," that's among the few rock songs extant boasting a Latin lyric) sustain the album's decidedly pre-industrial mood. Below the Salt stands as a British folk-rock classic. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Relive Olde Times.......2007-06-08

This has always been a personal favourite of mine - having done it to death on vinyl, it was pure joy to listen again to the amazing vocals of Maddy Pryor and the instrumental genius of Peter Knight et al. One of the best Steeleye Span albums in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential "Classic" Steeleye Span..........2007-05-02

Steeleye Span pioneered folk rock along with Fairport convention (whose music I still haven't picked up yet, though I've been meaning to for variety's sake). If you're a Steeleye Span fan, you will like this CD. Period. It's a Steeleye classic, and one of my many favorites.

Skip the newer releases, like: They Called Her Babylon, Bedlam Born, Bloody Men.

Go for the Classics: Tempted and Tried, All Around my Hat, Sails of Silver, Storm Force Ten, Rocket Cottage, Hark! The Village Wait, Please to See the King, Ten Man Mop, Commoners Crown, Now We Are Six, Parcel of Rogues, Below the Salt, Back in Line.

If you must pick up "modern" Steelye albums, pick up: Time (one of their best "modern" releases) and Horkstow Grange (their other good "modern" release). "Winter" is supposed to also be good, on par with the classics (traditional arrangements of holiday songs), though I haven't yet seen it.

The above "classic" albums cover the early and middle years.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2007-02-17

I don't suppose there's really any need for me to join the chorus, but what the hell: I can say without hyperbole that Below the Salt is one of the greatest albums in the universe. Listening to the band's mostly-uninspiring post-seventies albums, it's easy to lose perspective about how awesome Steeleye Span was in their prime, but listening to BtS brings it all back. This is just sublimely beautiful, deeply evocative music.

The opener, "Spotted Cow," is a very sweet love song--certainly a rarity for this band. Then the acappella "Rosebud in June" shows off the group's vocal abilities to breathtaking effect. It's a sort of fertility song, equating human and ovine fecundity. I suppose in this instance the word is being used in a manner similar to the French "jolie," but I can't help but smile at the line about the jolly, jolly sheep. The instrumental jigs are fine, if inessential--but then there's another stunner, "Sheep-Crook and Black Dog." It features some of Maddy Prior's best vocals--which, given her track record, is high praise indeed. I suppose that, broadly speaking, it's about feeling incapable of following societal expectations, in spite of the pain this causes--but that makes it sound way more like a sociology lecture than it should. It's beautifully sad, and the denouement is quietly devastating: "But she wrote that she's led such a contrary life/She said that she'd never be a young shepherd's wife."

Then there's "Royal Forester," which takes a mischievously proto-feminist approach to the "stolen maidenhead" trope that's so common in the band's oeuvre--even if the conclusion, wherein the maiden in question's violator's "punishment" is being forced to marry her, forcibly drags things back to a more medieval context.

"King Henry"--man, seriously, what can you say? At eight minutes, with several phases and complex arrangements, it's the album's obvious centerpiece. It's a tale of hospitality and duty with obvious echoes in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Wife of Bath's Tale, among others. It sort of feels like there should be another verse or two--but there I go, applying modern narrative sensibilities to an ancient song. Bad! I suppose I'd also be guilty of that if I noted that Henry's "hospitality" seems, in places, remarkably indistinguishable from plain ol' cowardice--but regardless of how you read it, it's a great song.

"Gaudete"--eh, it's decent enough, very pretty, great singing, and so forth, but, while I know it's one of the band's best-known (best-loved?) songs it doesn't exactly set me on fire.

"John Barleycorn" gets things back on track, however--there are innumerable variations on the "patron saint of alcohol" theme, including a number of well-known versions of this same song, but this one is, predictably, one of the best. "Saucy Sailor" finishes things well, even if the instrumental section at the end drags a bit.

So yeah. In summary: fantastic stuff. Easily the band's best album. Commoner's Crown is another popular candidate, and I think (somewhat surprisingly) that their reunion album Time ought to be another--but, great as those albums are, I don't think they can really touch Below the Salt. If you think you might be at all interested in archaic British folk music, this is the only place to start--and even if you don't, give it a try. You may well surprise yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful British folk music.......2006-10-26

British folk music has really grown on me over the years, and this is one of the best cds of the genre. I am especially fond of the lovely vocal harmonies in Rosebud in June and Gaudete, the instrumental Jig/The Bride's Favorite/Tansey's Fancey, Maddy Ryan's disarming vocal in Royal Forester, and the seductive strings in the closing Saucy Sailor.

This will make you want to further explore Steeleye Span's catalog of cds, and you will want to delve further into Irish Celtic music. I highly recommend this beautiful, catchy, folk music cd.

5 out of 5 stars Steeleye Spans Their Talent in Their Fourth Album, "Below the Salt".......2006-05-28

In medieval times, the monarchs and rulers of the house would sit at the north end of the table. Salt, being a rare mineral, would be put in the center to symbolize its extreme superioriority above all other foods. The salt would also serve as a divider from the servants and dependants, and the family and intimates. As you can see if you flat out your album, they symbolize this in the front and back photographs. The poor people eat below the salt. Below the Salt. Being probably the only Steeleye Span fan under the age of twelve, I would asure you that my tastes have been delighted by this collection of sad mellodies clashed with joy unparalleled by the most joyful recorder. Steeleye's amazing knowlegde of folk music broadens as they excel even without a steady percussion section to back them up. Their true magic is portrayed in Guadete, (Pronounced, Gaw-day-tay), the only true Steeleye hit, which made to the UK's top ten list. Gaudete, which in Latin means rejoice, is a beutiful vocal-only short, with Maddy Prior's sheer soprano voice cracking your strongest window. Saucy Sailor, a beautiful love story, will make your eyes water. The charming jigs will get you kicking your feet in joy. The album is so harmonizing it will give you chills. And just to let your know, the small child on the cover isn't an instrument, nor a prop. He is just a child, a small child.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-10-21

With Levon Helm in the movie, and (albeit briefly) singing in the movie, its a shame that he is not on this soundtrack. A missed opportunity, for sure.

3 out of 5 stars surprising.......2003-03-20

firstly, I enjoyed the film. Seagal is not Deniro and that is a fact, you didn't expect him to be. I was impressed with Mark Collie and Ed Bruce. They came off better than I would have expected. The music does make the film, even if you are not a fan of that type of music. While it may not be a best seller, it was solid. Unfortunately, you may want to enjoy the soundtrack while watching the film. But then, i find most soundtracks to be this way.

4 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2003-03-08

Randy travis' "Paradise" alone is worth the cost of the album. Also enjoyed Steven Segal and Randy Scruggs in "Desert Breeze".

The music is far better than the film - recommend this album highly

5 out of 5 stars Richie Sambora Rocks.......2002-03-25

I got it for Richie Sambora. He has the most amazing bluesy voice. Thank you Richie!

1 out of 5 stars Too much missing.......2002-02-07

The movie soundtrack had plenty of electric slide guitar by Ry Cooder, which was totally left off the soundtrack. I wanted the album, strictly for the Ry Cooder songs.

This was a marketeers "bait & switch" dream. What a disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars 40 BELOW AVERAGE.......2007-01-10

I've always enjoyed the music of 40 Below Summer. Their most recent album, The Last Dance," is a mediocre effort at best. Songs that do stand out include "New Age Slaves" and "Relapse" however the 7 remaining tracks we're obviously slopped together in an hour's time. 40 Below....you're better than this and you know it. If you do come back to record another record, put some heart into it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-09

Their last CD, but such a great way to go out. Every song is great.

5 out of 5 stars great way to go out.......2006-11-09

ill make it short and sweet, i love 40BS. max's voice is simply amazing. this collection of demos and unreleased material and the dvd of their last concert and some videos is a great way to end the great run of an amazing band. i only wish they would stay together and make more anazing albums like this and their others that no one else can do. its a great continuation of the morning after and close to the 40BS story. at least there is one good thing to come out of this and that is that max and a few of the guys are going on with the band ''black market hero.'' i've heard some of their material and i must say it sounded great even for demos. kind of like a more agressive 40BS. i cant wait for it!

5 out of 5 stars Good finale.......2006-11-07

While the 40 Below Summer we know and love is gone in name, they have resurfaced as Black Market Hero, with some new members. The best part of 40BS was Max and his awesome voice, so we haven't lost that. Check out their myspace site. There are some demos of new material. Definitely a reinvented 40BS. The last dance is a great value. The DVD is actually worth watching more than once. That is not the norm with free dvds that come with cds.

5 out of 5 stars More of the same and that's a great thing.......2006-11-05

This is the last we'll see from 40 Below since the band has broken up, but this is a great way to go out. Last Dance sounds like a continuation of The Mourning After. This is a band who has stuck to their story. They don't explore different genres of music because their music is so undefinable already. If you liked The Mourning After, you'll like Last Dance. Let's hope they can somehow find it within themselves to reunite (with a new bass player if necessary) and continue to make music like this because nobody else can do this.

    Album Description

Master singer-songwriter Cliff Eberhardt returns with the strongest collection of songs in his career on his first new release in five years. This is the comeback CD fans have been waiting for since the debilitating car accident which sidelined him in 2002.

The recording features an updated sound that highlights Eberhardt's pop and jazz influences without divorcing his loyal acoustic and folk fanbase, delivering 12 original new tunes backed by a tight combo that allows his powerful voice and strong guitar playing to shine in a way they never have before.

The title track, like the whole album, is about living in the moment. Recorded at Wild Sound in Minneapolis, the CD has an organic feel that veteran producer and Red House executive Eric Peltoniemi was striving for. Keeping Cliff's singing and playing uncluttered by overdubs and harmony vocals, Peltoniemi handpicked some of the Twin Cities' finest musicians for backing - keyboardist Rich Dworsky (Al Jarreau, A Prairie Home Companion) bassist Gordy Johnson (Maynard Ferguson, Chuck Mangione) and drummer J.T. Bates (Michel Portal).

The group had such immediate chemistry that the tracks were laid down quickly, many in just one take. The result is the album that Eberhardt has always wanted to make. From the melancholy notes of "The Right Words," to the sweet optimism of "After The Rain Falls," the record is a timeless collection of songs that speak to everyone, cementing Eberhardt's position as one of today's finest singer-songwriters.

5 out of 5 stars The Better of the two.......2006-06-03

I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03

This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.

A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.

4 out of 5 stars Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21

Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.
