A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qin, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.
One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.
Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26
This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

decent album.......2007-07-15
Musically this album absolutely rocks! It's heavy and very punk but can also be melodic at times.
I am not really a fan of AFI. I know what some of their songs are about (horror punk rock) and even saw them live once back on the Danzig/Samhain tour back at the end of 1999. While they were great live (and the pit was moshing 2 seconds before the music even started) the vocals never really did it for me. I was used to Danzig's rough growl. While I didn't hate it, it was a bit different.
This CD is good but the vocals really don't do it for me. I don't hate the vocals, I just wasn't used to them. They are not so bad now.
Davey Havok wrote all the songs here. For the most part they are dark (how I like em) and the only really bad song here is Invocation. The music for it is great, but the lyrics seem very uninspired and kind of flat. But the rest of this CD is amazing.
Of Power has some great keyboards and the fast drumming by London May is incredible. Stray, Evernight and In The Hills are all a great mixture of Samhain and AFI. The title track here starts a bit slow and is followed by two even better songs in Satiate and Of Man.
Michael is clearly the best song here. The writing is awesome and this is Davey's best vocal. Purevil wasn't quite as good as the other songs, but still decent. And Invocation I have already commented on.
So i can imagine that any AFI or Samhain fan has this already. If not, I would suggest picking it up even if you're a fan on both bands or only one of them. This is a good solid CD. 4 stars for this.

It never gets old!.......2007-06-30
One of Oldfield's Best!.......2006-12-13
IMO his best work!.......2006-11-21
It starts with 'In the beginnig' and continues with 'Let There Be Light', 2 very inspired songs which introduce you to the entire atmosphere of the album.
Oceania is an 'Island' style of song, although better sounding.
A New Beginning is a great song with a foreign speaking choir which definitely conveys the message of a 'New Beginning'!
There is not a single song on this album that one feels it should not be there.
Overall, extremely inspired and sending the audience a sense of 'well being' and 'out of this world'!
Haven't got tired of it yet.......2006-10-01
In the Beginning.....God created Mike Oldfield!!.......2006-09-01
Concept albums are something that is inextricably linked to that genre of rock music known as progressive. But it has been noted that although a major exponent of that form, Mike Oldfield very rarely composes concept albums. He himself has admitted that "Tubular Bells" is not a concept album, but just a continuous suite of music. I would argue that "The Songs of Distant Earth" is in fact his first out and out concept album. Based on Arthur C. Clarke's novel of the same name, Oldfield forgoes the direct narration that the other famous concept album based on a novel "War of the Worlds" utilised and instead chooses to tell the story almost entirely with music. The form and shape of Oldfield's album is a creation myth and what better way to start than with a track called "Let there be Light". Naturally for an album dealing with the forces of nature, creation, technology and science Oldfield produces an epic and epochal grandeur too an album that could in other less talented hands turned out flat and uninspired. It was only logical that Oldfield (a musician always wanting to forge into new frontiers and technologies) should embrace dance and ambient music. At the time of the albums release this was a market cornered by Enigma and at times, especially on the lead single "Hibernaculum" Oldfield comes perilously close to sounding a little too like them. But amid the programmed and heavily sequenced music, Oldfield's soaring and lamenting lead guitar shines, imperious and saying so much more than mere words can. This album was also one of the first to have CD Rom material contained within it, Oldfield proves some twenty-one years after his first album that innovation still comes naturally to him. This is a definite highlight for Oldfield in the 1990's and probably the best album he did for Warners.

Broadway Bound!.......2007-06-22
nothing can stop these boys!.......2007-06-22
The show is about four kids in college, taking a theatre track. one of them is gay and questioning, another serves as the "patriarch," a third as the "lost little lamb," and yet another who only wants to get what she wants, when she wants it, but makes the best of what she gets instead.
The musical score is very well written, and the lyrics are intelligent and edgy. Picture "Avenue Q" meets "A Chorus Line" but marries "Spring Awakening," and you have a fairly good idea of what "The Green Room" is. Though, one couldn't POSSIBLY classify "The Green Room" with any other musical, as it stands out and shines on its own.
The musical styles vary, and while it may seem hard to follow (according to one review), give the musical such an all-encompassing feel that provides for a wonderful musical romp!
I, like many others, would not be surprised if this show makes it to New York City. Foster and Pelletier make for a wonderful team, and their successes thus far can only be heightened, should this show come to light.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who can stomach content, for it is a shear delight and wonderful musical theatre experience.

Almost angelic.......2007-01-18
Great choir, but mostly recycled material.......2005-12-16
Unfortunately, I cannot give this otherwise excellent CD the same high marks. If they wanted to release a "best of Cambridge Christmas" CD, this would not be it. It does a few of the absolute best Christmas selections, including Sweelinck's "Hodie", Willcocks's breathtaking arrangement of "The Infant King", and Rutter's own quirky reading of "Personent Hodie". And it does contain a few tracks not previously released.
However, if you want the best of Cambridge and Christmas, start with "Christmas Night", which is always the first CD I pull out the day after Thanksgiving. The sound of the famliar Persall setting of "In Dulci Jubilo" sets my holiday in motion. And that CD also has Rutter's own magical "There is a flower". After that CD, get "Christmas with the Cambridge Singers", which has "The Infant King" and some other treasures.
So, you can't really go wrong with this CD, especially if you just want an introduction to how this fine ensemble addresses the most choir-friendly holiday of all. But if you're serious about getting all the good stuff, start with the other two mentioned above, then add "Christmas Day in the Morning" and the early "Christmas Star".

Of all the laudatory epithets applicable to Barbara Bonney, the term "radiant" might not be the one that springs to mind--at least, not insofar as it suggests the warm luxuriance of sunshine. Bonney's light, bright lyric soprano is something else: a voice of delicate refinement and transparent, pure-toned beauty. But it's capable of silkily seductive textures, too. And there are wonderful examples on this compilation disc that, if featuring a less-established artist, might qualify as a demo tape. Most of the tracks are previously issued, but together, they define her capabilities and home-base repertory, from Bach, Purcell, and Mozart through to Scandinavian song and Richard Strauss. With "Morgen," "Solveigs Sang," "The Presentation of the Rose" from Der Rosenkavalier, and "Ach, ich Fuhls" from The Magic Flute, this is a catalog of silver, if not golden, moments. Jewel-like singing and pure joy to hear. --Michael WhiteCustomer Reviews:
Rare gem of a contemporary singer........2007-02-15
I would say that Ms. Bonney is the greatest lyrical soprano of the late 20th century (she has retired last year from opera, I saw on the internet).
I've yet to hear another contemporary singer to beat her in her Susanna aria 'Deh vieni non tardar', or her Pamina aria.
Her Solveig's Song I took as a real vocal guide towards this song. Just listen to her 'ah' section and you will understand what I mean - such well nuanced musically line, such refined phrasing. Hard to beat.
Her opening song of Dowland is again a great wonder. Such drama built into so simple a song! Together with her Bach cantata, it reflect her vast span of repertoire that falls nowhere short of greatness.
Yes, I do not find her 'alleluia' from Exultate Jubilate 'very' exceptional, but this, as pointed out, may not be her best account of this work.
If she has really retired from opera then it is a great great loss indeed.
Superb!.......2005-12-03
This is my favourite cd of her.
Good compilation--but don't buy it new.......2005-01-03
Having said all this, the album is not at all a complete loss. There are some truly fine moments on here too. The Mozart arias are wonderful. Her voice really has the appropriate sex appeal for Susanna's aria. That's a favorite of mine anyway. Love the Strauss! Like the Dowland to open the cd. And check out track 16, "Die Nachtigall." The first time I listened to the cd, I had to do a "double take" halfway through this song. I grabbed the cd case and liner notes to see if someone else were singing this piece (since there are several guests on this collection) because it simply didn't sound like the same person. There's a depth and steely quality to her voice that I had never heard from her before. I was amazed. I suspect that she couldn't sustain that sound comfortably for an extended amount of time, but I was still very impressed to hear that she has that capability.
I tend to be overly wordy, so I'll wrap up by saying that this is indeed a cd that is worth buying if you can find it for reasonably less than the retail price. It's worth having for some of the better moments on the recording, but might be somewhat disappointing if you have invested the full retail value (as I did).
