Album Description
This recording brings together pieces writen for the guitar by some of the most eminent contemporary composers of Argentina. These include Maximo Pujol, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1957. He has obtained numerous first prizes in composition contests at home and abroad. The guitar works of Maximo Diego Pujol have been performed and recorded throughout the world by artists of the highest caliber. Both Narciso Saul and Juan Falu are active as performing musicians in Argentina. Carols Guasttavino was born in Santa Fe in 1912. He studied in Buenos Aires and IN Europe in the years after the war. Walter Heinze is active as a teacher of guitar, as well as composing and perfomring frequently.
Customer Reviews:
PACKING FOR ARGENTINA.......2007-02-27
This recording of contemporary Guitar music of Argentina is played magnificently by Victor Villadangos. After listening to this splendid recording, I had fantasies of sitting in a café in Buenos Aires drinking strong coffee. Some of my favorites compositions on the album that I particularly loved are Hector Ayala 7 part "Serie Americana" Narsico Saul's "Boulevard San Jorge" Maximo Pujol's 5 part "Suite #1', and Carlos Guastino's "Sonata No.1" .
All in all, I loved this recording; it certainly put me in the mood to go to Argentina.
An outstanding album with some surprising music.......2004-01-26
The repertoire here ranges into more diverse styles of composition, and so presents more variety, than the recent John Williams album of music from Venezuela. All of the music here, however, is eminently engaging. Several of the composers obviously are highly aware of, and incorporate, a variety of idioms including jazz, indigenous music, and even a touch of rock and New Age--or so it seems to this listener--leading to some highly original moments. None of these twentieth century composers seems at all adverse to writing music with recognizeable (and at times even memorable) tunes--although this may make them quite unacceptable to certain "modernists." Maximo Pujol seems to have the most original voice, and shows both energy and wit in his compositions. The music by Saul comes closest to being bland, but it too has its ingenious moments. Victor Villandangos--who I had never heard of before--proves to be a fine guitarist who produces a generally full and pleasing tone and shows highly accomplished technique. A little more tonal variation on his part might have lent even more interest to the album, but it is hard to fault it in any way, especially at its bargain price. Even the sound is quite good. Along with the Villa-Lobos album by Norbert Kraft, this is one of the finest guitar albums issued by this label--and would do any full-price label proud as well.

Awesome!.......2005-08-02
Incredible solo piano, particularly on San Juan Suite I. I love this CD!
His finest.......2004-07-24
In a nutshell these are Michael Gettel's finest works. All of his music gives glimpses of his superb technique however these two disks have an immediacy and energy that his other disks just don't have. His other works, while certainly enjoyable in their own right, distract us with background accompaniment that only seems to gauze over the music. However, these are so direct and so well performed they will give you shivers! How about San Juan Suite III? Michael are you listening?
Perhaps the Finest Piano CD in Existence.......2003-07-09
The good people at Narada have finally seen sense and re-released this CD as a "Narada Classic". And a classic it is too, for this CD features some of the most accompolished piano playing you're ever likely to hear. What technique this man has!
Michael Gettel just oozes talent. His piano playing on "Summer Rain" is nothing short of incredible. He captures perfectly the subject of the piece. So much so, in fact, that my class of 11 year olds were able to guess the title of the piece just by listening to it.
It is so rare to have a CD where every track is strong and commands one's full attention. This is definitely not mere background music. From ominous clasps of thunder to the sound of whales, Gettel's piano dances around Nature's wonders.
Disc one is stronger than disc two, but the purchase price is more than justified by the brilliance of the original "San Juan". The melodies are breathtakingly beautiful and few of Gettel's fans would dispute that "San Juan Suite" showcases this musician at his very best.
I cannot recommend this CD highly enough. A wonderful CD to be treasured.

Album Description
The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12
The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare
Customer Reviews:
Get It While You Can.......2006-10-13
This may not be easy to get in the USA for very long.....don't miss it.
Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01
This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.
The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.
The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.
Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.
Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.
Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Customer Reviews:
Superb New Age Piano.......2006-12-24
Michael Gettel's "San Juan Suite" is, quite simply, one of the best new age piano recordings out there. I find it amazing that Gettel hasn't reached the popularity of pianists like George Winston and Jim Brickman. The musical impressionism on "San Juan Suite" is enough to rival that of Winston's "Autumn" and the melodies are soothing and catchy enough to compare to Brickman's "By Heart". Gettel really is, as he states in the liner notes, a musical photographer. The pieces on "San Juan Suite" capture the imagery and sounds of the San Juan Islands in a way that is truly amazing. This is a must-have new age album.
The BEST!.......2006-11-13
I've owned this recording since 1991. When I wore out the tape, I bought the CD. If CDs could wear out, mine would be. This is outstanding storytelling by Michael Gettel. Each piece is masterfully played, some are combined with nature sounds such as whales or waves, and there is a substantial push & pull of the speed, sound and beat of the music which makes the music both energerizing and relaxing at the same time.
You will instantly be taken away to anywhere you imagine a beautiful body of water with pine trees and cliffs rimming it. It will feel like a somewhat brisk/chilly day, and you'll want to just bundle up and stay around and enjoy creation.
This CD is substantially better than Vol. 2., as this one is primarily piano whereas in Vol 2 he uses another instrument that detracts from the beauty.
Emotional, peacefull, refreshing!.......2004-05-14
Being someone who lived on San Juan Island, this CD absolutely fits as you drive near the shores of the enchanted beaches as well as take day hikes in the forests along the ocean. Sensational piano styles that take you to any place you imagine without leaving your home. Very emotional, exhilerating and freeing. Gorgeous composure. I recommend San Juan Suite highly to those who love majestic sounds of the ocean along with dreamy piano melodies.
One of the Finest CDs to be Released.......2003-04-19
Pianist Michael Gettel has created a masterpiece with this CD. Combining piano with various nature sounds, he successfully captures the beauty of the area.
It is so rare to listen to a CD where every track is strong; this is a wonderful exception! Michael Gettel displays wonderful technique on the piano, and has created beautiful and memorable melodies.
It is difficult to select a favourite track. However, "Summer Rain" can only be described as "incredible". As I described in an earlier review, my class of 11 year olds used this to write some fantastic poetry, with some successfully guessing the title of the track just by listening to the music.
A joy to listen to from beginning to end, this CD is currently out of print (hint, hint Narada!) but is well worth tracking down.
I give it my highest recommendation. A first-class CD.
One of the Finest Piano CDs in Existence.......2002-06-04
This is truly a magnificent CD. It is Michael Gettel at his peak. Never have I had a CD where I have loved every track; this is the exception. Each track has a delightful melody, and is a pleasure to listen to from beginning to end.
My favourite track is "Summer Rain". What technique this man has!! I am a primary school teacher in England (UK), and I played this track to my class of 11 year olds. On the board, I wrote the number of letters for the name of the track (6,4), and several of them correctly guessed the title of the track. Talk about aptly named!
Not surprisingly, I have never been to San Juan, but the music of this CD has inspired me to make the effort to visit there one day soon.
I have several Gettel CDs. This is easily his best one. How this one was allowed to go out of print I'll never know. Get it if you can, you won't be disappointed.
Very highly recommended.

Essence of the San Juans - on one disk.......2003-04-10
Refreshingly different than some of his earlier synthesized works, this CD uses sounds of the Northwest waterways with bass and piano that celebrates the San Juan Islands. Having lived in and near these islands for 25 years, no music is a close to capturing the feeling and mood during the stages of the day- twilight, a ferry ride, whales, a contemplative moment-- it's all here and if you can't tell, is my favorite Gettel CD. It's not the standard Gettel, but a work of art unmatched by his other works, and unique. Best shared on a summer evening with a glass of wine.
POOR - TOTALLY WORSE THAN VOL. 1 - WEIRD SOUND!.......2003-04-04
I have owned San Juan Suite Vol 1 for over 12 years now and pretty much wore out the tape before I bought the CD. It is an awesome CD.
Vol. 2 turned out to be a HUGE disappointment. The sound is totally different, and he uses a strange, low, synthesized sounding instrument in addition to the piano on almost every song. It is dull and actually annoying, and the songs sound very similar, not creative.
Avoid this one, stick with Vol. 1.
Michael's best.......2001-06-19
San Juan Suite II is Michael Gettel's best album. It captures his style beautifully because it is piano and bass...that's it and that is all it needs. Sandin Wilson provides bass lines that complement rather than detracts from Michael's keyboards. The opening moments of the album on The Calling set the stage for 50+ minutes of pure bliss. Michael begins with a simple piano theme set against the ocean waves and seagulls. Then Sandin joins in and the first notes of his bass will send chills down your spine. Whisper on the Tide is another song that blends the two instruments in a way that tingles the senses. Tale of the Whales is hauntingly beautiful with Michael and Sandin's melodies blended with whale song. Moonrise Over Orcas is mixed with a loon in this quiet and peaceful end to a wonderful album...Buy used if you have to but don't miss this album!
Michael and Sandin, please: Encore!
Vol 2 is just as good as Vol 1!.......2000-05-20
I picked up San Juan Suite Vol 1 at the end of a trip to Friday Harbor, WA, and I didn't listen to it until I got home (which is not in the Pacific NW, by the way). My wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed it. So, the next time I made my way back to the PacNW I checked to see if M. Gettel had released any other CDs. Among them was San Juan Suite Vol 2.
This CD is every bit as good as Vol 1. The original piano music, again mixed with occasional nature sounds (not overpowered by them the way some new age nature CDs are engineered), is wonderful.
The soothing strains of piano are excellent company as I work, read, do art work, or anything when I enjoy background music that complements rather than distracts from what I'm doing.
Great CD, highly recommended! 5 stars!

A second voyage to the San Juan islands..........1999-11-14
This is a new twist on the original San Juan Suite, complimentary rather than more of the same. Nine wholly new melodies, a reflection of the islands at dawn, day and dusk. Here, Michael is joined by his long-standing band member, Sandin Wilson on fretless bass. The two interact and inter-twine brilliantly, Sandin often carrying the melody as Michael anchors the tune. Clearly, Sandin had much input into the authoring of these melodies, yet receives little by way of liner note credit. Strangely, as with the original San Juan outing, San Juan II is not released on the Narada label. For all its 20-bit mastering origins, however, there's a fair bit of background noise evident amongst the quieter pieces on this album, intruding upon the natural decay and 'space' around the instruments. A nice touch are the ambient sounds captured from the islands, although they can sometimes tend to disrupt an otherwise gentle flow. But a great, relaxed late-night listen all the same.

Amazon.com essential recording
From the youthful bloom and impetuous swagger of Enrico Caruso's debut 1902 recordings to the darker, almost baritonal overtones typifying his final sessions before the acoustic horn, the singer's resplendent vocalism and generous performing style remain the archetype for Italian tenors. As a child of the late 19th century, Caruso was prone to embellish upon composers' texts, yet his passion, communicative power, and soaring musicality transcend time. The Italian sessions from 1902 to 1904 and Caruso's recordings with piano between 1904 and 1905, along with two later sides, receive conventional, unaltered transfers. The remaining material is restored via the controversial Soundstream computer process, which fleshes out the lower partials of the voice while compromising its overtones, relegating the orchestral accompaniment to a rumbling backdrop rather than contributing partner. Yet many will find the Soundstream transfers easier on the ear. Those who wish to acquire the complete Caruso in a single package at midprice should not hesitate to purchase this significant set. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
No - the deffect is NOT on EVERY set!!!.......2006-12-08
The deffect that some previous reviewers were so mad about did not happen to my set. After purchasing it for two years and listening to the disks every other day, they are still shiny and beautiful like new. You can't use the word "EVERY" so cavelierly, because you have not listened to EVERY set.
The Master of Italian Tenor Singing-Get it.......2006-05-20
I have been collecting Caruso performance since 1960- of course they were on vinyl- I even had some 78's. I think the 78 and vinyl records produced a warmer tone, but it is a delight to have the Master's performances in one place. My vinyls are worn to shreds.
Except for the lighter and bel canto roles, Caruso is supreme in the Italian and some of the French repetoire. Last night I listened to the Quartet from Martha for the first time in many years. Caruso sings about a 20 second phrase beginning "Dormi
Pur" which had me in tears as it had in the past. The ease of Caruso cadenzas in "La donna e Mobile" and "Una Furtiva Lagrima" put most tenors with a 1/4 of Caruso's vocal weight and size to shame.
There are no American/Swedish or any other hyphenated Carusos. He was unique and I am a Bjoerling freak. I find it
odd that a previous reviwer mentioned Mario Lanza favorably with Caruso.
Lanza rarely performed on an opera stage. On recording his voice seems large but his singing is amateurish. He squeezes, forces, barks and croons. At times one can hear a pretty sound but I do not consider him a major opera singer.
Rudolf Bing's comment that people who heard Richard Tucker were just as lucky as those who heard Caruso is silly. Tucker was excellent but NOT Caruso.
Lauritz Melchior, in the heavy German repetoire and to my mind Otello, is as unique and uncomparable as Caruso is in the Italian and French repetoire.
WARNING-All Original Releases Corrode Because of Dye.......2005-04-24
EVERYONE who bought the ORIGINAL multi-disc release has seen each disc become unplayable through corrosion because of a dye used to print the label side. BMG is well aware of this and has been inundated with demands for replacement.
This set is available in a subsequently released BUDGET compilation, also available through AMAZON. There are no manufacturing defects.
from a 13 year old kid.......2005-03-15
it is a great cd. when they say complete, they mean complete! 12 cds about 70mins each. comes with booklet with recording dates and matrix #s. in cardboardy-leather box. i did not have a probelem with red batwing labels making a clear film. the set is from the 70's but is the quality that great any way? contains private recordings.
There are other, better options.......2004-05-17
I was surprised to see that this set was still available. These transfers were made in the late 1970's at the dawn of the digital era and were state of the art for that time. But in cleaning up the surface noise these old digital transfers seriously flatten out the sound of Caruso's voice.
I would suggest that people interested in Caruso check out the "complete" Caruso series on Naxos with new digital restorations by the great sound engineer/artist Ward Marston. On the Naxos CD's the voice is preserved in a much more natural and subtle sound while all of the other noises are eliminated as much as possible. It's much more satisfying and true to the original recordings than these old RCA transfers. If you're going to spend $130.00 you should have the best available. It's only fair to Caruso.
