While the sales of Sarah Brightman's ambitious, Middle Eastern-themed 2003 album Harem may have fallen short of its predecessor, the veteran UK chanteuse's popularity as a live performer has only mushroomed. This live recording of her ambitious, sold-out Harem World Tour engagement at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Arena is testament to that appeal, begging the question: Will Brightman become the Grateful Dead of classical crossover? Indeed, abetted by the rich sonic textures of longtime producer/collaborator Frank Peterson, the worldbeat conceits of her recent studio recordings are folded into a larger, even more expansive live vision here. Brightman's overt dramatic instincts and oft-chaemeleonic vocal abilities drive a slate of material that stretches from the Arabian Nights/Madame Butterflypastiche of Harem's seductive "It's A Beautiful Day" through surprisingly effective classical/rock reinventions of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and The Moody Blues' chestnut "Nights in White Satin" to expected classical bowings "Nessun Dorma" and the obligatory nod to "Phantom of the Opera" Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! She is so much better live!.......2006-12-02

This CD rocks! This is Sarah Brightman on her Harem World Tour, and this performance was recorded at her stop in Las Vegas. The first two tracks, "Kama Surta" and "Harem Overture" debut from her newest album, entitled HAREM. The two tracks are connected, but in the actual Harem Tour, the full piece "Harem" is sung. If you go to www.youtube.com and type in "Harem Tour" in the Search Bar, you can see live videos. I would prefer that the album has placed "Harem" instead of these other two tracks. The third track, "It's A Beautiful Day", is from Madame Butterfly, written by Puccini. This version is Brightman's twist, which some more pop and some English. It's pretty cool. The fourth track on the album, "Dust in the Wind" is from EDEN, an amazing album. Track 5 is, "Who Wants to Live Forever", and it seems as though Brightman never creates a tour without putting this piece in it. It's a beautiful tribute to Queen's rendition. Track Six is "Anytime, Anywhere", also from EDEN. I'm not really into the Foreign Language - English songs, but this works very well, especially because she ends the song with the classical foreign language. The seventh track is Brightman's rendition of Dvorak's "Song to the Moon", or "La Luna". The track is beautiful! The eighth track is Puccini's "Nessun Dorma", and Sarah masters this beautifully! There is no other soprano I know that can sing this piece one octave up and can hold the ending note for ever!!! Track 9 is "The War is Over", which is followed by "Free", both from HAREM. Track 11 is "A Whiter Shade of Pale", from LA LUNA. It's beautiful to listen to. Sarah's version is very gentle, but has a lot of energy in the chorus. The twelfth track on this album is "Twisted Every Way", followed by an instrumental version of "The Phantom of the Opera" Theme. The next track is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again", which is extended at the end, in which you hear some men cry out "WE LOVE YOU SARAH!", and she responds cutely with an, "I love you, too." The audience laughs! Track 14 is "Time to Say Goodbye", the duet that made Andrea Bocelli famous, and skyrocketed as the number one single sold in German history! The last live track on the album is "A Question of Honour", from "Fly", which is awesome! The last track on the album is a bonus track, which I don't really prefer. However, the whole album is simply amazing. I much prefer Sarah when she is live. She has a more magical quality! If you love Sarah Brightman, then you will love this album.

ALSO RECOMMENDED : Since there is so much Sarah Brightman to choose from, I also recommend EDEN, TIME TO SAY GOODBYE, LA LUNA, CLASSICS, and DIVA.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Beautiful and The Sweetest Voice!.......2005-08-21

What an album, absolutly beautiful!
We, the fans of this great artist finelly have in our hands a live album, and it's amazing:
-The voice is totaly live, she sang about 24 complete songs in the show, but the album only contains 15.
-Snow In The Sahara is a lovely song.

If you have the chase of get this alubum, don't doubt and get it; It wond disapoint you!

5 out of 5 stars astounding performance.......2005-06-07

an impeccable concert experience that successfully elevates the album to majestic heights. I had long been a fan of Dead Can Dance and the unparalleled work of Lisa Gerrard. When Sarah Brightman ventured into these Middle Eastern sounds on the Harem disc, I thought it was too derivative of the Dead Can Dance sounds (there is even a sample used on one of SB's songs that had previously been used within DCD).

However, experiencing this epic and intensely mystical concert compelled me to realize the individual and unique glory of Sarah Brightman. Also, this concert is so phenomenally entertaining at many levels that I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with the special magic of Sarah Brightman. Obviously, the expansive Middle Eastern milieu can accommodate more than one angelic vocalist!

I now consider Lisa Gerrard and Sarah Brightman to be geniuses who both warrant goddess status in the pantheon of lyrical greats. To see either one of them perform live is surely one of the most powerful and memorable sensory experiences one could ever have!

4 out of 5 stars Great, of course.......2005-03-18

Sarah's voice and style are terrific, as usual. However, I have to say that her version of Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" is fairly bland, especially compared to the original Anggun version. Sarah has the chops but lacks soul on this great song. Everything els here is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Constellation Of Hits.......2001-09-09

First album of Gladys Knight & The Pips to Buddah Records, "Imagination" brought the glory for the group in 1974 and a constellation of hits, present in almost all the collections of Gladys in the market. The mega-hit "Midnight Train To Georgia", "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", "Where Peaceful Waters Flow" (all composed by Jim Weatherly), "I've Got To Use My Imagination" and "I Can See Clearly Now" are easy to find around. But, the album has other pearls, never remembered,as the vigorous "Storms Of Troubled Times" and "Once In A Lifetime Thing" (Jim Weatherly striking again!),unforgetable performances of Gladys, and "Perfect Love", that brings out a curiosity: if you have a sound device with two loudspeakers, pay attention, in one loudspeaker Gladys sings along the song, in the other, The Pips sing, the same song, at the same time, but seemingly separated. So, in a loudspeaker you hear Gladys, in the other you hear The Pips.

I thought this was a good CD, I tend to like music form all over the world. I found a few songs to be great. Some songs on it I wasn't too impressed with. Over all it was a good CD I listen to it to relax and even to get me in the mood.

4 out of 5 stars Actually it gets 4.5 stars..........2004-10-15

This is a very wonderful cd...the cover art is lovely and the music is relaxing... I know it is music for the Kama Sutra, but I slip this cd in on my way to work, and I have a good day every time! So, it is not only for intimate moments!
I only gave it 4.5 stars cause it does get a tad bit repetitive towards the end, and I don't care for the last 4 songs as much as the first 3. Yes, there are only 7 songs on this cd, however, they are all pretty long. There is a lot of native instruments of India used on this cd, and there is some beautiful singing and vocalizing on all tracks. It does take you away from the everyday, and can be used as a relaxing tool for meditation...or anything else you want to use it for...
Try it, you'll love it!

This earlier issue is the better sounding of the two available. The other, more recent one is too limited and the artwork is not as good. Great classic soundtracks from the 60's!

4 out of 5 stars Instrumental tracks from the film.......2003-05-04

If you liked this (now-dated) Woody Allen film and the rock n' roll of the time it was released, this recording will bring back amusing memories and a bit of nostalgia. I don't think any of these Lovin' Spoonful tracks made it to the playlists, but they are catchy, if a bit formulaic, rock n roll tunes. Fun.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY "THE BEST".......2001-09-09

Here is one of the best album of all Gladys Knight and The Pips' career! Impeccable, splendid! Listen "Sorry Doesn't Allways Make It Right" in the voice of Diana Ross, in the album "Ross" (1978) and listen this same tune in the voice of the group to compare, with ecstasy, what Gladys and The Pips are able to do with a song! (I love the talent of Diana, too. It's just a comparison). With the exception of "Saved By The Grace Of Your Love", not so good, all the rest are amazing! The album contains, besides the mentioned songs above, "Come Back And Finish What You Started"(Van McCoy/Joe Cobb), "All The Time" (Barry Manilow/Marty Panzer)(I didn't know that Barry Manilow was capable to compose something so good!), "It's Better Than Good Time", "Butterfly", "The One and Only", "Don't Say No To Me Tonight", "Be Yourself" (Van McCoy again) and "What If I Should Ever Need You" (also recorded by Aretha Franklin). It's a record to play from the beginning to the end, to fans and non-fans of Gladys Knight & The Pips.

4 out of 5 stars Gladys Knight & No Pips?.......2006-11-14

'Miss Gladys Knight' is Knights first solo album from 1978.There are two things to say about this album:the musicians, production and arrangements are top notch.Same goes for the songwriting handled by Allen Touissant,Carole Bayer Sager and Barry Gibb. Also Gladys's voice couldn't be in finer shape-she was still in her prime as a singer. But the trouble with 'Miss Gladys Knight' is the nature of the songs-sad,string laden ballads (largely referring to romantic breakups) make up about 3/4 of the album-they are saved from being a total downer by Knights triumphant, husky gospel/soul stylings and her terrific vocal pathos."Sail Away/Freedom From The Stallions" on the other hand is a fantastic, socially and historically aware slice of classic deep soul about a voyage on a slave ship."I'll Take A Melody" is another highlite from this album-it takes on a similar retro soul style (even for the late 70's) and infuses it with a great melody.'Miss Gladys Knight' also contains two uptempo tunes-both in a Philly/Disco mold:"It's Better Then Good Time" (also recorded earlier with the Pips) and the excellent closer "Love Gives You The Power",one of the very finest uptempo songs Knight has ever made.'Miss Gladys Knight' proves once and for all that while she is more then capable of keeping up with the time Gladys Knight's own personal forte tends towards classic retro Motown style soul. And if you want to hear music of that style you will certainly find it here.

4 out of 5 stars GLADYS ALONE.......2001-09-09

Gladys without The Pips, still at Buddah Records, 1978... This album contains some pearls that hardly are remembered. The aching performance of Gladys for "We don't need each other laugh anymore", a song entirely different from the style we were used to hear from Gladys, the delightfull "Sail Away/Freedom For The Stallions", the potential hit "I'm Still Caught Up With You", the vigorous and wonderful Gladys'performance to "I'm Coming Home Again". Only for these tracks the record is already worthy. But it has too a good song called "The Way It Was" composed by B.Gibb, R.Gibb and Blue Weaver (Bee Gees?), and another two good ones, "I'll Take a Melody" and "With You In My Mind"! We don't miss The Pips in this album, maybe because of the chosen songs. Gladys seems to show that she can walk alone.

The Lovin' Spoonful's dismal track record in reissues obscures their glories as an ebullient '60s folk-rock band from Greenwich Village that bucked the style's West Coast dominance. While not their finest work, this coupling of their two forays into film music--for two then-fledgling filmmakers, Woody Allen and Francis Ford Coppola--shares a what-the-hell exuberance appropriate to Allen's antic, redubbed Japanese spy flick and Coppola's flawed but engaging coming-of-age comedy. The 1966 film What's Up, Tiger Lily? gets top billing but is the slighter work, boiling down to a terrific, typically funny title theme ("Pow") and various reprises, plus variants on earlier album tracks ("Fishin' Blues" and "Cocoanut Grove") and a folk standard. Their soundtrack for 1967's You're a Big Boy Now is more ambitious, adding orchestral arrangements and cohering around three solid originals, including the tender, romantic "Darling, Be Home Soon," plus more fully realized cues. Film buffs will be disappointed at the annotation's pop-centric spin, but the band's fans will be grateful for another spoonful of their scrappy, good-natured music. --Sam Sutherland

Album Description

Two of the hit American pop rock group's soundtrack albums together on one CD, director Woody Allen's 1966 spy comedy 'What's Up, Tiger Lily?' The former includes the hit 'Pow'; the latter features the top 20 smash 'Darling Be Home Soon'. Both records were originally released on the Kama Sutra label. A combined total of 26 tracks. 4 out of 5 stars TIGER LILY has some fab out-of-character stuff.......2004-11-29

TIGER LILY includes a jazz masterpiece called GRAY PRISON BLUES. Which gets my vote as The Spoonful's greatest track. LOOKIN' TO SPY is an instrumental version of COCONUT GROVE and contains 2 fab guitar dischords. Another gem is PHIL'S LOVE THEME. Which has a brilliantly understated yearning quality.

4 out of 5 stars Wash Her Away is not a wash.......2003-03-05

I had one disagreement with the last reviewer. I'm a Spoonful fan and "Wash Her Away" has been one of my favorites of theirs for years. It's one of their most rambunctious tunes. Also "Respoken" is another one of their more underrated songs (rather melodic). It's probably correct, however, to call "Girl Beautiful Girl", a throwaway, but with the footnote that it was, after all, the song Francis Ford Coppola chose to open the film with (i.e., can't be that bad). Although most of the songs are instrumentals, this CD combination does provide to Spoonful fans an added dimension to how unique a band they were.

3 out of 5 stars A Few Gems--Lots of Filler.......2000-01-13

Okay, okay. This 2-on-1 CD reissue of the two soundracks the Spoonful did should not be judged by the same criteria as their official studio releases. That said, there are some classic Spoonful tunes here to be weeded out from among the mostly instrumental songs found here.

About a third of the tracks are vocals and all deserve a listen. "Pow" is the kind of zany track like "Blues in the Bottle" or "Bald-Headed Lena" that wound up on the albums Do You Believe in Magic and Daydream respectively. "Fishin' Blues" remained in John Sebastian's live set throughout his solo years. "Respoken" gives Zal Yanovsky the opportunity to provide some understated guitar licks. "You're a Big Boy Now" is classic Spoonful with its bouncy rhythms. And "Darling Be Home Soon" even became a hit (peaking at #15). However, "Wash Her Away (from the Discotheque)," with its cheesy organ sounds like some studio mogul's idea of what rock and roll should sound like. And "Girl, Beautiful Girl/Barabara's Theme" is little more than a throwaway when compared to classics like "Do You Believe in Magic" and "Summer in the City."

In between, there are lots of incidental instrumentals. All of it listenable(at least once), but not much really memorable. Zally's guitar playing is always tasteful and Sebastian's harmonica is used to good effect. Although on the tracks that get the full orchestration teatment, like on "Letter to Barbara" and "Miss Thing's Thang," the band seems to disappear entirely. And even as kitsch "Dixieland Big Boy" can be painful to listen to.

However, when the band is left unadorned like on the bluesy "A Cool Million" and the country-ish "Phil's Love Theme," the Spoonful deliver.

Overall, this album is for completists only. But with so little of the Spoonful's original albums in print, this is worth giving a spin--and the price isn't bad either. CAUTIOUSLY RECOMMENDED
