This double CD by the Gipsy Kings is one of my all-time favorites! I now have 2 copies of this CD and I introduce the Gipsy Kings to as many people as I possibly can. Everytime "Volare" plays, I feel like dancing! Just really great, infectious, "feel-good" music! You do not have to understand Spanish to enjoy!

Rumba Flamenca I love!.......2006-04-04

I must say that the Gypsy Kings are simply musical geniuses. Every song of theirs is a "Hit" in itself. The history of how they came together is also very fascinating. I grew up listening to these guys thanks to my dad. The first time I heard the Gypsy Kings was in 1991 (this is when I didn't even know who they were!). When sitting in the car, he would pop his cassette in the tape player and all of a sudden, this music would put me in a trance. I finally found out who they were in 96' and I was glad that I did. Bem, Bem Maria; Tu Quieres Volver, and El Verano are my all time favorites. I could listen to these 3 songs over and over and never get tired of it. It's not only the strong rhythm that they bring in their music, but its also the hard melody they play out in all of their studio recordings. For anyone who is reading this and is not familiar with the Gypsy Kings, I suggest you buy an album from them. I recommend "Volare! - The Very Best Of The Gipsy..." Since it has all their greatest hits. Once you do, you will fall in love with the sounds of Rumba Flamenca!

I remember their hit "Bamboleo" back in the 80's...and decided to get this CD, thinking that that was the only song I would like. I was never a fan of the Gipsy Kings, but I am one now!!!! I can listen to their songs over and over, "Baila Me" is such an upbeat song, you cant help but want to dance. "Viento de Arena" must be in another language other than Spanish, cant understand a word of the song, but also one of my favorite.

The mix of traditional Flamenco guitars with a modern beat, is perfection in itself.

I was expecting something along the lines of Strunz and Farah, after hearing only one tune on the radio. What a disappointment! There is that one song, it is clearly different from the rest of the tracks. And thankfully, it contains no Kings vocals, which are as grating on the ears as pigs in heat! Of course, there are some reveiwers, as reflected by all the stars following this album around, who relish this stuff.
If you are new to these guys, beware! Taste the sauce first on someone else's dime before you buy.

This album will make anyone who has ever seen Spain (in a postcard, photo album, or through their own eyes) be mentally reteleported- and if you had no idea that Spain is one of the most musical countries in Europe, you will now. To say that this is a great example of how the Spanish guitar should be played and how Spanish music should sound is an understatement! The guitar sounds like a person, an identity of its own and the male voices blend in harmonies that no other nation (except Spain) could concur. I was left in a state of awe the first time I heard it, and now (after MANY instances of replay) I get chills every time I hear "Un Amor", "Bamboleo", "Djobi Djoba", and "Faena". Even for a non-Spanish speaker this is a great album to own; anyone can easily identify with the rhythm and feel of each song. It is truly a musical masterpiece and one of the Gipsy King's best albums.

THis CD is a classic, and Al Dimeola is one of the greats. Considered by most who know great music to be his essential CD. MTV-rocks is either incredibly brilliant for his sarcasm, or incredibly stupid, because, well,read his reviews (also essential). I'd hate to think that this view of good taste is where the music biz is going, jeez, so I prefer to think of him as the "weird al" of online reviewers :).

This album is 100% essential fusion, and certainly the Al DiMeola album that you HAVE to own, though of course you should really own more than one his great albums. So tell me, Sony, why haven't you remastered this classic? Casino and Splendido Hotel were remastered years ago and sound great, so why do we have to suffer with this shrill, tinny-sounding version of one of the greatest albums of all time???? Just wonderin'.

It's worth buying.......2007-03-08

I bought this CD for the Slash piece that is included. I liked each and every piece in this CD, and the only reason it gets 4 stars rather than 5 is because all pieces are quite similar. There are no significant variations in the mood or sound between them, so it can get a tiny bit boring by the time you reach the end of it. Great for background music.

Rare compilation of great music.......2007-01-11

The disk is packed with great music, some of which is genuinely rare to find (such as Slash of Guns'n'Roses playing Obsession Confession), and others might serve as a good introduction to well-established artists (such as Jesse Cook, or Armik)

The disc's cover art is a masterpiece in its own right, and is a great introduction to the works of painter, dancer and a great man...
(find out who this man is when you get the disc in your hands!!!)

I believe the disc to be a limited edition thing - I don't think they continually produce it - so hurry up!

Gypsy Soul.......2006-11-06

I needed "world" music for a class I am taking. My kids had been playing Slash's(Guns & Roses)Obsession Confession, so I figured at least for me, this would be a somewhat painless foray into the unknown.

This album is breathtaking. The music is passionate and emotional. I find it difficult to stop listening, and the more I listen the more involved I become. Each time I play this album I hear something different, and my favorites change regularly.

The artists are obviously masters. There is none of that squealing and screeching on the strings that one hears so often on guitar work.

I guess the best thing I can say is that each song takes you on a journey and the listener can write their own story.

If this is your first listen to this genre, Gypsy Soul is a perfect choice.

Great music, no matter what you call it!.......2006-03-07

As I understand it, some purists would not call this Flamenco music of any kind, but it is wonderful and energizing to listen to nonetheless. The level of virtuosity on guitar displayed on this album is really incredible, and the delightful variety of songs is really nice. As a degreed musician and professional harpist, I have a tremendous respect for the level of musicianship demonstrated on this album. This is my first sampling of "New Flamenco" music, but it certainly will not be my last. A big plus for me is that it is all instrumental, so I'm not tempted to sing along, much to the relief of my fellow bus riders and coworkers!

I have other gypsy/flamenco CDs, and purchased this one based on some other reviewers comments (on the other CDs). I prefer the CD Gypsy Passion over this one by a wide margin.

I'm not a deticated fan of tis music as others may be but if you are oing to start anywhere, this is one you want. To me, all the songs are gtreat to listen to. The songs will take you to another world.

This CD is fantastic for anyone who loves Flaminco and the Flaminco guitar. It surges with energy and might just have you "dancing in the streets" or rushing out to sign up for lessons. Enjoy it; you won't be disappointed. P.S. I have heard and seen live Flaminco in Seville, more than once, and this one really took me back with even greater awe and admiration, in addition to the otherwise wonderful memories.

OK let me just settle all this criticism for all those who may want to buy this cd. First of all I play flamenco guitar professionally. There are 50 different styles of flamenco that are well know and countless others that arene't so well known.
Within those styles are hundreds of compas most based on the city in Spain of origin. There are a myriad of time signatures including the 12 meter hemiolic which most common in Bulerias.
I have reviewed this and other CD's like Flamenco chill and comment without reserve that these are flamenco songs. The "modernization" of flamenco music can be equated to blues appearing in every rock recording for the last 50 years. An old type flamenco recording would usually be a concert piece from Tarraga or Jerez or one those classically trained flamenco artists. It could well be argued that they classicized flamenco which ripped out all the guts and soul of the music. The amazing picado runs, powerful rageos, and alzapua licks are all mandatory elements of flamenco. If one would participate in a juelgo they would see a cajon, castenettes, palmas, cante, baille etc...this is a letre..a play of sorts with everyone responding to the cante. To listen to this in a recording would be like listening to the sound of a baseball game..there would be so much missing that it would be a complete waste of time.
SO stop tying to be mr. know it all and just enjoy music for what it is..an expression of human emotion....peace out

"New Flamenco" not new Flamenco.......2005-12-07

With apologies to Mr. L.K. Coleman and his utterly misleading Spotlight Review, this album does not pretend to be anything but what it is. Flamenco is a traditional form of music born in Andalusian Spain and created from Indian, Arabic, Jewish, Romano-Iberian and Celto-Iberian elements. GYPSY PASSION and its successors in the Narada catalogue are examples of Nuevo Flamenco or "New Flamenco" which is a style of Fusion incorporating traditional Flamenco, Jazz, Rock, Classical, and other musics. Either Mr. Coleman doesn't know about New Flamenco as a school of performance, or he's a purist who just dislikes it.

In either case, this album deserves five stars as a lively, engaging and pleasurable listening experience. And yes, "New Flamenco" has revitalized the traditional Andalusian form in modern-day Spain. GYPSY PASSION is absolutely worth your time.

Este gran volumen es la segunda entrega discografica de los Reyes Gitanos y al igual que su antecesor (Gypsy Kings, simplemente)es todo un despliegue de maravillosa Rumba Flamenca, no en balde son sus mejores exponentes; elogio grandes trabajos como SERANA (Pura rumba explosiva, buenisima), exquisitas melodias como CAMINANDO POR LA CALLE y VIENTO DEL ARENA, bellas baladas melancolicas como TRISTA PENA y EL CAMINO, piezas muy prendidas y alegres como NINA MORENA y VAMOS A BAILAR, muy buenas versiones de temas clasicos como VOLARE y SOY (sencillamente divinas) y sin faltar deliciosos arreglos instrumentales como PASSION, LIBERTE y la que le da el nombre al disco, MOSAIQUE (muy rica en percusion y cuerdas); si eres amante de lo latino y lo flamenco, y sobre todo si eres fan de los Gypsy Kings, este disco es INDISPENSABLE en tu coleccion, compralo!!!

I had a cassette of Mosaique actually I still have it but needed a CD. The CD I received is in awesome shape and was mailed to me in a timely manner. Delves deeper into Flamenco.......2004-03-15

This is like Bamboleo, but goes deeper within. The range of human emotions is expressed, from melancholy to elation. Beautiful guitar work. These are masters of both string and voice.

I own seven Gipsy Kings CDs (including this one), and this one has to be my #1 favorite. The songs on here can stick in my head for hours. Probably my favorite track is "El Camino", but they are all fantastic.

If you are just starting to listen to the Gipsy Kings, this CD should be one of the first ones you buy. The songs don't seem to be as traditional as the ones on other disks, but they are all very very good.

Mosaique.......2001-06-17

Mosaique is another brilliand release containing great songs. Standout tracks are: Volare, Soy, Vamos A Bailar, the beautiful Trista Penna and the very atmospheral Viento Del Arena. It is simply a masterpiece. The Album containes brilliant Instrumental tracks, the best of which is Passion which must be the most beautiful song I have ever heard. The US release is slightly different from the Euro release. The Us release containes the catchy Nina Morena, but the Euro release containes Bossamba, an added instrumental track. The version of Caminado Por La Calle is also much better on the Euro release, with the added percussion and sax. Both releases are however very recommended.

Smooth Soulful Armik... Ahhh..........2006-02-15

This is what my ears were yearning for. Armik delivers. He is truly a world-class musician. He has great technical expertise but he also knows how to make a song flavorful and not overdone. He sort of has "the magic touch." His compositions are very satisfying and good for many occasions. I rank him amongst the best guitarists in the world in this genre. JUST DIM THE LIGHTS, TURN SOME CANDLES ON, HAVE SOME WINE, AND SIT BACK WITH SOMEONE IN FRONT OF THE FIREPLACE AND YOU WILL BE IN A TRANCE. I remember being in the car with my uncle driving back from work. As I reached home and got out of the car, the music was still ringing in my ear as if I had a built-in player in my head. I just couldn't get it out of my head, I've never heard such music where so much passion & skill has been put into it, all I can say is that the artist has an extraordinary gift of acoustic guitar that No one can match! He is all I ever listen too, and once you listen to his track you never turn back!

Who can improve upon perfection?.......2007-04-14

I refer mainly to the technique and musicality of the players. The atonality, the nuances, the striking of the bows stay with me.I feel a sense of place and close to the music through this impeccable recording. I look forward to sending this CD to some of my friends . One small change I would have made though, I would have concluded it on a livelier note. Actually not... I agree, bitter sweet.

Little I can add the the excellent reviews already offered here below. One thing, There are two vocal performances. I have the lyrics to Rooster Is Crowing, but the other I do not. Although it is apparently in Hebrew, the pronunciation is so idiosyncratic I can't make out the words, nor can any of my Jewish friends, including one who is Israeli. The problem could be Ms. Sebestye'n but I doubt it. Her teacher is perhaps not Jewish, or else this is correctly pronounced but in a very distinctive and strong Transylvanian accent. In any case I need help. If the text is taken from a prayer, you could simply refer me as I read Hebrew just fine. Otherwise I would appreciate any help. The performance is so wonderful I really would like to know what she is singing. By the way I can certainly show my appreciation in like fashion. I have lyrics to all Muzsikas recordings in Hungarian and to most in English as well and would be glad to share.

This is one of my favorite Jewish music albums! I'd absolutely recommend it, I think the price I paid for it at Amazon was great too!

As far as some of the reviews concerned ("Red granite", "Tziganul") about whether this music has some Hungarian or Romanian influence I have something to say from my personal experience. I've lived with a Jewish family for 2 years (I was a Nanny) in England and got to like Jewish music a lot, that's why I bought this album and it brings back good memories too.

The Family (from the Mothers side) came from Transylvania and speak Hungarian. I also have relatives living in M?ramaros who are Hungarians. Also, Transylvania belonged to Hungarians (Magyarok) from 895. ...and even before, from 380(Huns). So I just cannot imagine not to have any Hungarian influence on this music.

On the other hand, along the years many people of different nationalites settled down in Hungary (therefore to Transylvania too). Of course, before Hungarians and the Huns settled in todays Hungary, territories were rarely populated (and back then weren't countries only tribes and tribes did move around). Again, Slavic people say that it is not true because Slavic people largely populated that territory. Then, Romanians say that they were living at that territory as the descendants of the Romans. We, Hungarians say that they didn't, Romanians used to live elswhere.

As far as who Transylvania belonged to on the first place and who the minority and majority (Hungarians vs. Romanians) when after WWII Transylvania has been taken from Hungary and was given to Romania are hard telling now. We, Hungarians say Romanians were the minority and Hungarians the majority and we have evidence of it. Of course Romanians say it the other way around.. But who knows the truth? We cannot go back in time and detect the truth, unfortutely...but this is another subject already which seams like a never ending controversy.
In my humble opinion, the best solution would be if Transylvania wouldn't belong to anybody. It'd have autonomy.

So that's said, We all know there are so many nationalites that have lived (many of them assimilated already or fluorished) or still living in Transylvania; cultures being so close to one another are going to have an impact on each other in music and in many other ways too.

Both of the previous reviewers have said some true and some false statements.

Regarding what Cinkapanna said: Yes, the word "Maramaros" is Hungarian, but not the region which it designates, which is, and was inhabited by Romanians. Although under Hungarian military and political rule until WW1, Maramures (NW part of Transylvania), was inhabited by Romanians for the most part. Nowadays there are some 72% Romanians and 20% Hungarians in Maramures. The figures were largely similar immediately after WW1, according to censuses of that time.
Being said that, it is no wonder that there _are_ undeniable Romanian music influences here.
And no, the music does not have Hungarian roots, it has of course Jewish roots, and Romanian influences. I can't tell, however, if it also contains some Hungarian elements.

Maramaros IS Hungarian.......2005-04-02

I hope any semi-informed individual will disregard the comment made by "tziganul" stating that the music on this CD does not have Hungarian roots. Maramaros WAS Hungarian until WWI with about 53,000 Hungarian speakers. Please, do some research before misguiding people.
The CD is great and has wonderfully haunting melodies!

If I had to pack for a desert island sojourn, this CD would definitely go in my luggage. Hot southern days, hot southern nights, passion, romance, joie de vivre, Flamenco Gipsy pop which burns...turn the heat on and dance with the Gipsy Kings.

Este Mundo.......2001-06-17

The Gipsy Kings prove to us again how brilliant they really are. Este Mundo is a very good CD containing great songs. Standout tracks are: Baila Me, Sin Ella, Habla Me, Oy, El Mauro and the beautiful No Volvere. The album also contains three great instrumental tracks. The best of them are Lagrimas and the slow Ternuras. Very recommended for any music fan.

Music you have to dance to.......2000-09-26

I find it impossible to sit still when I play this CD. Invariably, the rhythms have me up and dancing in seconds. And although my ability to understand Spanish is quite minimal, the vocalists present the message of each song so well and with great emotion that intuitively I find I understand the gyst of each song. If you like accoustic guitar, syncopated rhythms and vocalists that are obviously having wild fun, then don't pass up this CD.

An incredible group effort from one of the greatest bands (in any language) of all time. The lead vocals are shared which gives the album a nice variety. The Kings are in top form here. Habla Me has to be the most beautiful song in their 100-plus song catalog.
