5 out of 5 stars Neal's softer side.......2007-07-10

This music from Neal could really be appreciated by everyone. You don't have to be a guitarist to appreciate how well Neal plays a melody, or to istantaneously love his fluid guitar sounds and his storyteller approach to this album. It is a sort of "new age" album in a sense, very different from Journey's music for the most part (you can easily understand this from his picture on the album cover which shows him with a Gibson hollow body guitar and not with a Les Paul or with another solid body rock guitar). It is him playing his heart out through the guitar on some calm, exotique and nice compositions that reminds me here and there some things written by Russ Freeman (Espanique, CoolBreeze or Zanzibar for instance). Here Neal is helped by his Journey colleague Jonathan Cain exceptional composer, arranger and keyboard player. What can I add? It is beautiful instrumental music very well played, music that you can enjoy in a lot of situations and that really deserves attention. I own a lot of solo albums from Neal and this is the one that I'd suggest to everyone who wants an album of very beautiful instrumental "guitar" music or that want to own something good from Neal. But don't think to shred guitar. Neal here plays very softly for the most part, making some doublings here and there like he usually does when he plays with Journey too, but this album is about melody and emotion not about show off. He very rarely use full distorted sounds here, instead he tends to gravitate towards clean or soft crunchy sounds .... but here and there his rock soul appears through his long sustained lead sound, and well ... he shines as he usually does! A very nice album I'm listening a lot in these days.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-02-09

Neal Schon's CV is pretty impressive, and this is surely one of his best works to date. Favourite tracks are 'Espanique' and 'Deep Forest'. Schon's range is incredible and this album truly shows his maturity as a guitarist that we had not seen with Journey's later albums, up to the point that this was released. This album is as powerful now (2007), as it was in 1995, and surely cements Neal Schon as one of the great guitar virtuosos of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar master.......2007-01-12

I bought this album many years ago when visiting a hi-fi retailer with a friend who was looking for amps and speakers. This was one of the demo albums.
It has always had a treasured position in my collection - THE best guitar instrumental album. And that it is not accolade achieved lightly. I am a great guitar fan and have many albums by other established players such as Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Joe Satriani, John Williams etc and I love them all, wwhatever their musical style.
However there is something about Beyond the Thunder that makes it practically the ideal album whatever your mood and I gravitate towards it more often than any other. I recently used several of the tracks to soundtrack a DVD of holiday photos that we took last year and have been inundated with requests for me to tell who is playing. Do I tell them or keep it to myself? There is a certain devious pleasure in being 'in the know' about artists that are not household names. It is sometimes to do with the fact that another person might not like an album as much as you do - that has not been the case with this one. I could not hold back and several friends and family are now slowly coming to terms with this great music.
Favourite tracks - Big Moon (the demo track from the shop noted above)Caribbean Blue and Call of the Wild (what a soundscape)

5 out of 5 stars My Best Surprise in Music.......2006-11-14

I've been a Journey fan since the beginning of the addition of Steve Perry. It wasn't so much Steve Perrys voice that I had enjoyed as much as it really was Neal Schon's guitar playing. From the solo's in "Who's crying now" till what I thought was another great in "I'll Be Alright Without You", I had always craved more of his playing the guitar, there was never enough. It wasn't until last week I put Neal's name in search & as crazy as it sounds, never knew he had several solo cd's out. I listened to the tracks on Amazon for the "Beyond The Thunder" cd, I found exactly what I was looking for. No vocals! The guitar Neal plays, literally does all the singing in ways I would have never imagined & the dosage you will get, far outweighs anything I can compare to with Journey. No doubt Neal is a musical genius. There is not a bad track on this cd. If you like what you hear in the samples, you'll be more than pleased with this CD.I may have discovered his solo's 10 years later but with what I have been hearing in music with other artists, this couldnt have arrived for my ears at a better time! Thanks Neal!

5 out of 5 stars Decades of Guitar Talent Distilled into one CD .......2005-08-12

After decades of guitar workmanship which included gigs such being Carlos Santana's sideman and lead guitar for super group Journey, Neal Schon is finally producing music which focuses on his guitar talent rather than focusing on making money. This music will never be played on top 40 pop radio. It's far too good for that. It's powerful, moving, delicate and flawless. Schon conveys many moods here from whimsical and dreamy to dark and powerful. He still rocks out too. All without lyrics. If you've graduated beyond adolescent music and can appreciate great guitar talent or just play a guitar, you owe this one to yourself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.
