After earlier albums that focused on the Australian didgeridoo and Central African Pygmy chant (later discovered by Deep Forest), Aussie Martin Craddock has broadened his scope for a truly global world beat fusion album. African beats are at the heart of these eight songs, but Gypsy, Arabic, jazz, and Celtic influences swirl through standout tracks like "Meeting of Tribes" and the techno remix of "Booma Lena." Cameroon water drums on "Ancestor's Voice" are like nothing you've ever heard. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Blend of Celtic and Traditional Music.......2004-07-09

I was introduced to this CD when it came out and I was awe inspired by it. The blending of Celtic and Traditional African music is flawless. All of the tracks on the CD are fantastic. My most favorite one is Track 8-Booma Lena because of it's unique melodies and harmonies as well as an excellect beat that you can dance too. My boss at work loves the song and the entire album, so I gave her a copy. In essence, Buy this Album. You won't regret it. It is an eye opener to other music of different cultures and a relaxing one at that.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely music, I am glad I stumbled upon Baka Beyond.......2002-12-27

I just 'discovered' this group a few weeks ago through the Amazon recommendations - ordered the Journey Between CD and then promptly ordered several more of Baka Beyond's titles. I also ran out to a CD store and bought a few to give as Christmas gifts. It's a very interesting cd. It seems a bit more mellow compared to Journey Between; so far, that's my favorite Baka Beyond CD. Tracks 5 and 6 are my favorites on The Meeting Pool, they are the ones with more pep I suppose. I also have East to West, and Spirit of the Forest CDs by this group. East to West is more slick, Spirit of the Forest has a more primitive sound...

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2002-02-15

All of the songs on this album are good, and I definitely like most all of them, but there is one thing that just bears mentioning. OHUREO IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER. This album is worth it JUST for that song. That woman's voice is utterly breathtaking. Seriously, everyone on Earth should hear that song at least once. It is PERFECT in every way. It sends chills down my spine, it's so perfect. The guitar, that violin, the light waterdrums, and that woman's voice simply SOARING above everything. When the chorus breaks in, I always picture some kind of Medieval sorceresses casting a spell--and then that amazingly pained, sad but uplifting violin comes back into the mix... wow!

All of the songs are great, but that one.... that is in a class by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2000-07-18

This CD is one you can listen to over and over again. you just can't get tired of it. My favorite song is "Ohureo". It's so incredibly haunting how the vioce seems to tell a tale. This Cd seems seems to energize you as it relaxes. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars very melodic, earthy and with a touch of meloncoly........1999-03-20

excellent musicianship, voices are absolutley haunting. the cd has a very eclectic feel to it with the different musical styles thrown together to give this band it's own voice.

3 out of 5 stars Don Your Fig Leaves.......2007-07-08

The title cut is a world fusion favorite, as well as a favorite of mine. Baka Beyond melds acoustic world rhythms and near-wordless vocals in an ingratiatingly upbeat manner, though it can become tedious at times.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice music.......2007-05-14

I bought this for my day care children. It has a very nice beat that is great back ground music in our play area.

1 out of 5 stars Disgraceful Appropriation of a Unique Culture.......2007-02-20

While I HIGHLY recommend the wonderful "Heart of the Forest" CD, comprised of field recordings of authentic Baka music, this "Spirit of the Forest" should be titled "Spirit of Exploitation." The original music and sounds of the Baka people are mixed with Western instrumentation that destroys the spirit of the forest and turns it into a "Dance Remix" pile of studio mush. It's way, way Beyond Baka alright. Forego this commercial bastardization and get the real thing, Heart of the Forest!

4 out of 5 stars spirited music.......2005-11-10

after seeing baka beyond live in concert recently we were compelled to pick up this recorded work. though it does not reproduce the unique energy of the concert,it pleases on other levels. when martin craddick and wife su hart lived with the baka pygmies in africa in 1992, it was no doubt a life altering experience. much of that comes through in the music presented on
"spirit of the forest". craddick, who's resume includes OUTBACK, a similarly genre busting project, teams with hart(vocals),paddy le mercier(another veteran of OUTBACK on violin and flutes)and members of the baka people who play percussion and several african instruments, to create a mellow listening experience based on a fusion of musical ideas. i paticularly like using this as background music for various endeavors, but there is plenty here for those who wish to have a provacative listening session as well. the warm commraderie the participants shared really comes through. i don't see how any fan of acoustic based alternative music will be disappointed in this recording. as an added incentive to explore this work, it is stated in the liner notes that "all performance and compositional royalties due to the baka for this album will be collected for them to use to protect their forest and to develop in a sustainable way without losing their knowlege or their culture."

5 out of 5 stars I can't get enough of this CD!!.......2005-07-26

I just bought this CD and WOW, I can't get enough of it. I can listen to it over and over again and each time my toes are tapping and the fingers are drumming. This CD is so up-beat and happy. Guaranteed I'll be buying more CD's by Baka Beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Inspiring music that makes you get up and dance!.......2005-10-12

This is a gorgeous album. This is not only a musically beautiful album, but also an ethically beautiful album. Check out the band website (...) for details of how the Baka musicians (of the Baka Pygmy Tribe from the rainforest in Cameroon, who are the inspiration for and recorded for and sampled in the music for Baka Beyond) are paid exactly the same as all the other musicians who play on the album and how those royalties get turned into projects (Decided on by the Baka themselves) that help the whole of the Baka community, a marginalised culture in a very corrupt part of the world.

The music on the album is sublime, there are some 'Baka only' tracks and they are beautiful. The harmonies are incredible and very evocative, especially with the sounds of the rainforest audible in the back ground.

The music of Baka Beyond will make you want to get up and dance, it's lively, positive and even better live!

Marrying traditional Celtic melodies and instruments with West African traditional rhythms and modern musical stylings like Highlife and Afro-pop may not seem like the most natural idea. But in the hands of Baka Beyond--a group that takes the term world fusion seriously, as it's roughly split between Celtic and West African musicians--the combination makes for a delicious musical stew that goes down smoothly. It's been five years since the group's last album, and longtime fans who discovered the band through its hugely successful Spirit of the Forest release in 1994 won't be disappointed. East to West is probably the group's most accomplished work to date.

Founded by English guitarist Martin Cradick and singer Su Hart, who lived with the Baka pygmies in the rainforest along the Cameroon-Congo border in 1991, Baka Beyond stands out from a world fusion crowd that includes groups like Deep Forest and the Afro-Celt Sound System by delving a little deeper than most into both the African and Celtic roots of its music. On East to West, instead of dropping in the occasional sample for exotic effect, the group places the disparate elements together in a live context with thrilling results: "Awaya Baka," where a chorus sung by Baka children melds with Paddy Le Mercer's Celtic whistle amid a funky Highlife groove; "An Gwirder," where Nii Tagoe's West African balafon and Alan Burton's bagpipes, based on similar pentatonic scales, mix seamlessly; and "Wandering Spirit," which fuses two Scottish jigs with a traditional Baka dance rhythm. --Ezra Gale

4 out of 5 stars Terrific fusion of Irish and Ba'aka music!.......2007-03-13

I didn't expect to like this as much as I did, given the political controversy surrounding the use of Ba'aka intangible cultural property in a mix with European music. But problematic politics aside, from a musical point of view, it's very successful. The rhythm and syncopation of the Ba'aka percussion, and their complex singing, provides a surprisingly interesting background for Irish lyrics and melodies. This goes to show how cultural mixings can produce really show-stopping aesthetics. Too bad the Ba'aka weren't financially compensated for the use of their music. In the future, musicians wanting to use material from Third World peoples need to propery compensate them, the same way they would pay royalties to cover a piece composed by another musician.

5 out of 5 stars Baka Beyond - East to West.......2003-09-11

This is some of the most incredible music I have heard in years. Every aspect of this album is superb and played to perfection. I especially enjoy the African percussion, fiddle, guitar, and vocals. You will find this music to be extremely uplifting. A masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Energizing and Utterly Amazing Music.......2003-08-24

I first heard Baka Beyond at a festival and was enthralled immediately. Their music is infectious and forces you to smile, sway and rock back and forth in your chair before finally being carried away and jumping up and dancing with full force in the aisle! Listen and be enchanted for yourself :)

5 out of 5 stars Another Great One.......2003-03-01

It's good to see that Baka Beyond is not resting on its laurels but has come out with another great, creative CD. Existing fans should not hesitate to get this. I've only had one complete listen-through but this CD seems to have more of a celtic influence than predecessors which is fine with me. Plus the djembe playing is excellent and more pronounced. While the group stays true to its acoustic feel, I was happy to hear some experimentation with electric guitar as well. Congratulations to Martin Cradick and company.

This is one of my all-time favorite albums, hands down. I never get tired of it, and it always puts me in a great, mellow, energetic mood. What a pity these guys broke up. Their collaboration was sheer genius. Search this album out! It's worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-01-19

I didn't like this one as much as "Dance the Devil Away", but it is still a very good CD. I just liked the spirit in "Dance the Devil Away" more than this one. The didg and guitar work are outstanding on both albums-the later "solo" material by these two wasn't nearly as good as the magic Outback captured.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed!!!!!.......2002-02-05

Easiest album I have ever listened to hands down. I'm not one who enjoys much world music, but even I can appreciate the beauty of this album. Melodic, rhythmic, and will just put you in a better state of mind! As an Australian I'm saying that 'Baka' perfectly captures the essence of Australia and is one of the best kept secrets in music.

5 out of 5 stars No one can walk away from this music!.......2001-09-27

I have had all the Baka, Baka Beyond, and Dr. Didg albums since their release and there is no more captivating "new" sound than this. (Matter of fact, I am listening to the "Baka Playlist" for the umpteen zillionth time as I write this!) First off, it is a brilliant stroke of creative genius to bring the indigenous peoples' music to the fore. It resulted in a wonderful mix of instruments and vocals. You won't believe the depth of their musical talent (remember, too, there are loads of them involved) and the beat is infectious, plain and simple. What a great time these guys must have had in Cameroon doing this. And hats off to them for sharing the very best of it with you and me!

Buy all their albums (and do not overlook the Dr. Didg [Didgeridoo player from Baka] album, Out of the Woods, another EXCELLENT, out of the ordinary, spin-off effort). If these albums all went out of print tomorrow, I'll guarantee there isn't a single owner that would sell his or her collection for 10X what they paid for it, this music is that special!

For those of you that don't already know about it, you might also try and find the old Mick Fleetwood album that he did years ago with a similar group of natives (mostly kids) in Ghana. Great stuff, the album-jacket photo of the kids drumming is worth the price alone!

One reviewer advises that you give this music as Christmas gifts. Great advice, ABSOLUTELY! The repeating gift: best investment in longterm friendship you can make!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for road trips!.......2001-04-27

This album has such a great feel. Very upbeat and fresh, yet mellow enough for late evening listening. Memories of driving from Anchorage to Fairbanks in late summer before the first frost. While I am fond of both their albums, I am partial to this one. Baka feels more fun and lively than their second album. But they are both very excellent albums and make a nice pair of acoustic albums. (Actually, they are great to listen to anytime, not only for road trips. But you'll probably figure that out on you own...)

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Handel and MDG.......2006-05-25

Okay. So I'm biased. Handel is my favorite composer. But even if he's not your favorite there are still many reasons to purchase this set of 3 CDs. If you enjoy baroque vocal music. If you enjoy wonderful singing and graceful music. Long, tuneful arias punctuated by brief recitatives. Also the production label for this CD is MDG and the acoustics for their recordings are always top-notch without any sort of soundmodifying manipulation. And how they can produce such a superior recording of 3 CDs for $20 and some change is beyond me. Anyway I'm not a knowledgeable music critic. I just know what I like though I do happen to think I have good taste in music. In my humble opinion music like Handel's is a privileged foretaste of what we will experience in Heaven. That may sound like hyperbole to some but not to those of us who are passionate about baroque music. If you're a seasoned Handel fan you must have this recording. If you're new to the baroque vocal music scene you also must have it. Hurry up and purchase before the good people at MDG come to their senses and double the price!

5 out of 5 stars Superb vocals over an upbeat, original African/Celtic blend........1998-07-31

After listening to Journey Between, I went straight back to the store and purchased Baka Beyond's other two CD's. I've never done that before in about 35 years of buying 45's, LP's, 8-tracks, cassettes and CD's. The African beat will quickly move into your core and the instrumentation, slightly understated and teasing, will have you wanting more. You could dance to this using steps that will come from your body of their own accord, or just listen. But you can't sit still. You might not be able to imagine how well African and Celtic sounds work together until you hear this. But perhaps more than the beat or the instruments are the vocals. If you've ever heard female vocals better than these, give me call. Get a CD for yourself, one for your best friend and one for the next gift. You can't miss.

      5 out of 5 stars Rhythm Tree.......2005-04-11

I have enjoyed Baka Beyond for years, and this newest CD is wonderful! I had the chance to see them live in Washington DC on April 8th and bought the newest CD after the show in the lobby. It has not been out of my CD player yet! As always, the music is addicting and you will NOT be able to sit still! They are great live and every CD I have heard from them is well worth owning.
