Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing..............2005-10-05

This is a great CD. I bought it for my daughter who is a massage therapist, and it is very nice to listen to. I love listening to it while cleaning my home as it is very nice background music.

5 out of 5 stars Pick Up Some Hilary Stagg!.......2005-08-02

If you like harp and/or New Age music, titles by Hilary Stagg are for you. In addition to this album, I also own Dream Spiral and The Edge of Forever. Beautiful harp playing. Definitely satisfies the harp lover in you!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful!.......2003-05-11

Would you like to drift away on a cloud? That's what this CD
will make you feel like you're doing! The music is both stirring and evocative...pulling up emotions from the depth of your being. "Sweet Return", "Reflections of Love" and "Forever
and A Day" are perhaps my favorites, but it's difficult to choose, because every single song is great.
I discovered the music of Hilary Stagg after his death...and am regretful of that. His untimely death was a great loss to the world of music. So, don't miss the opportunity to buy this CD. You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Where has this music been all my life........2003-04-06

...I happened onto a sampler including two of Hilary Stagg's recordings - "Reflections of Love" and "Pleasant Dreams". Having never heard of Hilary, I listened to a few of his album recordings, bought "Sweet Return" and "The Edge of Forever" and have been listening ever since while driving as well as in the evening when drifting off to sleep. His acoustic harp and choice of accompanying instrumentation is absolutely beautiful. While some other great instrumental musicians like Yanni, David Lanz, Jim Brickman, etc. tend to "wear" on me after awhile, Hilary Stagg's music retains it's freshness even if listened to over and over. Although I understand Hilary passed away a few years ago, I can't believe I'd never heard of him and his music until now. This musician was a true, true artist and genius.

5 out of 5 stars Ah ..what a relief after a rotten day at work.......2001-08-16

LISTEN...just listen, relax and go somewhere else (leave your stress behind you)...imagine yourself in a beautiful field far way from city lights..then look up and revel in the stars above you and listen to this remarkable artist and his gifted co-horts. What an incredible gift has been left us. So sad we will no longer be blessed by this man's gifts. We can, however, LOVE his contribution to music and spirituality.

5 out of 5 stars The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

5 out of 5 stars Hubbard At His Best.......2001-10-29

I have been waiting for the re-issue of this CD for years, and for years I have haunted the stores and scoured the internet in what had been a futile search. Finally the moment I knew had to come arrived.
I own a number of Freddie Hubbard albums, but I consider Sweet Return to be Hubbard at his best. I first bought it on cassette back in 1983 when it was originally issued, immediately liked it and wore out the tape as the years went by.
Hubbard is ably backed on Sweet Return by jazz giants Lew Tabackin on tenor sax and flute, Joanne Brackeen on piano, and Eddie Gomez on bass. The music ranges from frenetic on Calypso Fred, to smooth and romantic on the jazz classic Misty. My favorites are the title cut, which is a magnificent showcase of Hubbard's virtuosity, Whistling Away In The Dark, The Night Has A Thousand Eyes, and the Brackeen composition, Heidi-B, which showcases her stunning piano play, provides a vehicle for Tabackin to show off on his flute and gives Hubbard a launching pad from which to take us soaring to the musical stratosphere.
Since this CD arrived, I have played it over and over again, enjoying it just as much as I did when I first heard it nearly twenty years ago. This is one CD that belongs in every serious jazz lover's collection.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

5 out of 5 stars The Miller Orchestra in top form!.......2006-05-17

You can't beat the Glenn Miller Orchestra live over the airwaves. This disc takes you back to a time when you'd listen to your entertainment center, a.k.a. the radio. Great atmosphere, fun verbal banter, really good sound quality (even better than some studio recordings) and a great selection of rare and classic tunes. Bassist Trigger Albert really cooks and raises the level of the band a notch. Also, Ray Eberle is surprisingly in excellent form. Enjoy.

PS: One day, I hope to see a "radio broadcasts" box set of the great Glenn Miller Orchestra 1938/1942. There is so much to choose from, it would be a shame if the major record company fails to come through. Wouldn't it be lovely to have every song included in the box set, not every performance, but every song performed over the airwaves, it could easily be well over a hundred. Why there must be at least a couple dozen versions of "In The Mood" to choose from. All the classics like you've never heard them, different arrangements, extended solos and many times the radio performances were superior. A lot of the radio broadcasts created better sound quality. Then, there are all those great numbers that were never "officially" recorded, classics like, The Gentleman Needs A Shave, Georgia On My Mind, Hold Tight, The Jumpin Jive, Rockin Chair, When Paw Was Courtin Maw, The Jersey Bounce and list goes on and on. A real treasure is waiting for us Glenn Miller fans. But who has got the map?

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28

I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.

Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.

I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.

I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.

    3 out of 5 stars Tepid performance.......2004-04-12

This recording has wonderful, clear sound quality, but the performances, and especially the conducting, are not up to par. Jessye Norman sings everything beautifully with rich tone, and sounds magnificent in her two arias, but she is a lifeless Aïda. She pastes on Aïda's emotions. Her portrayal is too shallow. She sang this performance when she was still a lirico-spinto, and not yet a full-blown dramatic soprano. Her soft high notes are pretty, but hardly breathtaking and she cuts some forte high notes short, like the high B-flat on the word "Ah!" in "Ritorna vincitor". Pedro Lavirgen is a squillo-less Radamès. At least he puts a little more emotion into his singing than Norman does. His "Celeste Aïda" is surprisingly effective and well sung. His high notes are secure, but he shamelessly milks "Sacerdote, io resto a te" by holding on to one of the high G's for an inordinately long amount of time. Fiorenza Cossotto is in great voice, but very surprising for her, she is very subdued in this performance. She is not dull by any other mezzo's standards, but she is dull by her own standards. Her Judgement Scene with the priests is not included in this highlights CD. Her high notes are rock-solid, which at least partially makes up for her less-than-total dramatic commitment. The baritone who sings Aïda's father is serviceable, but by no means memorable. The conducting of Nino Sanzogno is lifeless. He uses the same, moderate tempo for every scene. When the tempo should speed up and be dramatic, like at the end of the Amneris/Radamès duet, he lets the tempo drag. Some of the brass playing is less than spectacular, the mentioned duet being an example. The trumpet playing in the Triumphal March is mediocre; many of the notes sound like they are about to crack. The sound, as mentioned earlier, is superb. There is no audience noise except for applause, and no tape hiss. The orchestra and soloists could have been miked a bit closer, but they are very audible throughout.

This recording could have been great, but an atmosphere of lethargy pervades it, with Sanzogno's conducting being particularly dead.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Perfromance.......2000-01-06

As a Jessye fan, I was very excited to come across this recording. It's a live performance. with excellent recording quality, and the performance is fantastic. Cosotto as Amneris is simply electric, and the rest of the cast is superb. One or two flat notes do not mar my respect for jessye's interpretation, but could explain why this was not recorded by a major label.
