This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS" by one of Rock's most sacred legendary bands of all-time, I give you one of America's pride and joy's, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. This legendary album would be originally released in 1986 on Vinyl/LP, Cassette and Compact Disc on the Fantasy Records label. Like "CHRONICLE, VOLUME ONE, 20 GREATEST HITS," "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, 20 GREAT CCR CLASSICS is released on a special Two-24-Karat Gold Compact Disc set edition. The 24-Karat Gold coating produces a highly reflective surface for the laser signal. In fact, the Gold CD is the ultimate experience in recorded music. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

The whole world was blessed with the original "CHRONICLE, VOLUME ONE, 20 GREATEST HITS" when it was released in 1976. Now the whole world would be blessed again ten years later with the release of "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS" in 1986. Its only appropriate that Fantasy Records would release another compilation collection on this legendary band, there was just not enough room to put all of their hit songs on the first volume. When you listen to "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS," you realize that this band really recorded some fantastic hits throughout their whole career. It also makes you wonder what took Fantasy Records so long (Ten years) to release the second volume. In my opinion, "CHRONICLE, VOLUME TWO, TWENTY GREAT CCR CLASSICS" is another true testament of the sheer greatness, graceful genius and a fine tribute to a legendary band that has already been proven to be ahead of their time.

Now we get to the most important part of the whole review, the music. If you want to hear the true Rocker's on this compilation album, listen to the songs such as "Walk On The Water," "Susie Q (Part two)," the breathtaking "Born On The Bayou," the Little Richard classic "Good Golly Miss Molly," the rugged "Tombstone Shadow," "It Came Out Of The Sky," the Elvis like Rocker "My Baby Left Me," the wicked "Pagan Baby," the soulful heartfelt "It's Just A Thought," the tough rockin' "Molina," the spirited "Born To Move" and the Ricky Nelson classic "Hello Mary Lou."

The slow Rock Ballads on this compilation album are the classics such as "Wrote A Song For Everyone" and "(Wish I Could) Hideaway." CCR could really show their sensitive side by playing a little more mellower.

The only slow Blues Rocker on this compilation album is the classic song "Night Time Is The Right Time." This Blues number is a true heartfelt song recorded the CCR way. CCR could really play the Blues.

The Country Rockers on this compilation album are the classic songs such as "Cotton Fields," "Don't Look Now (It Ain't You Or Me)," the ever popular "The Midnight Special," "Before You Accuse Me" and "Lookin' For A Reason." These are pure Country Rockers, my favorite is "The Midnight Special."

Overall, this is one hell of compilation album that compliments the other original volume perfectly.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this second volume compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album has already been proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL will forever be remembered as the people's band that represented the youth culture and the bikers of the turbulent sixties and beyond. Their music expressed the feeling of how the times were unfolding during the turbulent sixties and into the seventies. When CCR broke up, one of Rock's greatest all-time bands would be silenced and laid to rest. The world was waiting for a reunion but all hopes would be shattered with the untimely death of TOM FOGERTY on 6 September 1990. FOGERTY would die as a result of AIDS given to him through a blood transfusion. Prior to his death, the FOGERTY brothers did not get along and would be fighting constantly throughout their whole career together. TOM FOGERTY was establishing himself in his own right as a songwriter and singer but remained in the shadow of his brother JOHN FOGERTY throughout their whole career. TOM FOGERTY would be the first CCR member to quit the band and go solo. CCR would later break up in 1972. However, the remaining surviving members would have a brief reunion while receiving Rock's highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in January 1993. As of this date, JOHN FOGERTY resolved his conflict issues and legal disputes with his old record label Fantasy Records and is now back with his old label better than ever keeping the CCR legend alive. So here's to you John, the late great Tom, Stu and Clifford. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Chronicles 2: Twenty great CCR Classics by Creedence Clearwater Revival.......2007-01-19

The band CCR formed during the turbulent times of the 60s and early 70s, they gave poetic justice to that period with original compositions and made even greater classics out of old tunes. They created entertaining melodies with political fore-thought. They did this without profanity nor by debasing the religious beliefs of others...unlike many of today's young artists. This album deserves five stars.

John Fogerty has finally made peace with his old label, Fantasy Records. One of the results of this is the first ever assemblage of his Creedence Clearwater Revival hits with his less classic solo work. The Long Road Home is a mixed bag, though. Since there are plenty of worthy Creedence hits packages, fans likely already own 14 of these 25 tracks (four more CCR songs appear in recently recorded concert versions). But there's never been a compilation of Fogerty's inconsistent, occasionally inspired solo career, and unfortunately only seven tunes from six studio discs make the cut. There are no selections from the spotty Eye of the Zombie or his first post-Creedence covers album, the excellent Blue Ridge Rangers. Only two tracks from 1975's terrific yet obscure John Fogerty make an appearance, and both are represented in spirited but inferior live performances. Simplistic.......2007-06-18

This is a gem I didn't know had been released over a year ago. CCR had very simple music (no big bands), understandable lyrics and a comedic twist that in some ways was ahead of it's time. Most lyrics were written by John Fogerty and though the band only lasted about 5 years, John went on to become a very very good single artist (Old Man Down The Road, etc). Here we have some of CCR's greatest hits (some fans will be disappointed with some that were not included), some from John's single forays and some that are live. I don't care for live albums much but these are well recorded. Great liner notes are included which will give you a capsule view of John and the bands career. Chronicle volume 1 by CCR would be a great companion with this one.

The best CCR as well as John Fogerty coll........2007-05-23

This is a great, and I think the best Creedence Clearwater best of. I prefer it in part because of the bonus of Fogerty's best solo material, which holds up its head well in the lofty company of his former band's greatest hits, and also because it avoids the long, jam-like tracks (Grapevine, etc.) that just are not on par with the shorter tracks from the CCR catalog. While one need not be religious about it, there is a reason that most great rock and roll songs are executed in around three minutes or less. This collection is rock solid--a real pleasure. Even a few live tracks and a scrambled sequence add to the cohesion and the enjoyment rather than detract from it. I have had the standard CCR collections, and I prefer this one. There is also a non-musical reason to get it. If you tend to believe John Fogerty, and I do, that he was ripped off and mistreated by his record co. and even fellow band-mates (I like democracy most of the time myself, but John conceived and did the conceptual theme, the lead guitar, the great songwriting, the singing, etc. all himself, for hit after hit after hit, so it was a bit silly for his band members to demand equal time, however worthy their instrumental contributions may have been) there is an extra-musical reason to buy this as well. After the long years of bitter lawsuits, including one where Fogerty was brought to court charged with stealing from songs he himself had written, the higher up at CCR's label Fantasy finally left. This opened the door for smarter and cooler, if not more ethical, heads to prevail at Fantasy. After decades of not owning the music he had written and created, etc., John finally got some consideration. He was welcomed home (thus the title) at last and offered the deal of doing this collection of his old CCR and newer solo material and odd live track, making a glorious collection and long-deserved victory and vindication of sorts. Good for him. Who knows how many years the nonsense under his nemesis took off John's life, but here's hoping this puts 'em back. Thank you John--we are happy for you!

Why are you waiting?.......2006-12-16

Ashkenazy is one of the titans of Chopin. Davidovich and Arrau are the other two. They're all you need. Get Davidovich for the concertos, (inlcuding the Krakowiak--Op 14), Arrau for the nocturnes and a few micscellaneous pieces. Ashkenazy handles everything else.

(Btw, Ashkenazy vs. Davidovich re. the impromptus is a toss up. But since the impromptus aren't on this disc, you can make that critical decision another time.)

Ashkenazy's scherzo #2 (op. 31) IS the best. Period. Other interpretations that your favorite classical music station may substitute are downright lame.

The rest are basically sublime. The first and 4th ballades will send shivers up your spine by Vlad's sheer technical ability. His artistry is second to none.

An excellent complilation of Chopin works which includes 3 of the pieces I am currently learning. Definitely has encouraged me to improve my piano skills and allow me to better appreciate his style of music.

Beautifully done 2 CD of Chopin works. I've played it every weekend since I got it, loving every track. It's well performed and recorded, and is an excellent collection for anyone interested in Chopin or his adopted homeland of Poland. And, of course, you can't often go wrong with the London Label.

chopins Mazurkas.......2005-08-08

this is a wonderful collection of the mazurkas but Ashkenazy plays a lot of them too fast my music teacher played these with more pathos he seems like he cant get done fast enough with some of them some introductions should be slower with more feeling otherwise all the mazurkas i wanted are in this disc just wish i had got better artist like Claude Arrau

REST FOR THIS WEARY SOUL.......2005-03-09

On vinyl I owned Ashkenazy's complete recordings of Chopin's piano works. Prior to purchasing this CD of what I call "highlights from Vladimir's Chopin Recordings", I had not replaced them in this format. What a joy it is to hear Vladimir Ashkenazy play these works again. I'm reminded of how much I loved his playing of Chopin on vinyl looking forward to each "new release" with great anticipation. Being, what is referred to, as a "senior citizen" , Chopin's music means ever so much to me offering rest for this weary soul. Vladimir Ashkenazy's performances on these discs are first rate and ones I truly love. As a previous reviewer pointed out, this compellation is a bargain-great price, great music, great sound and great performances by a master of Chopin's music.

If you love Chopin, as I do, buy this recording it will sooth your soul as only great music can.

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

[...] Honestly, it isn't THAT THAT great, but its good enough for its price. I'd say that your $ pays off, for a while. I've noticed how after a long time, it gets aggrivating at times. No harm meant, "Beethoven lover". I just mean don't plunge into this cd with all the hopes in the world. Besides, it's just my opinion, so you may like it more than me. All i can say is; a) listen to some samples before you buy, b)know this is not REALLY the great Beethoven himself, and c) enjoy YOUR music, whatever it may be.

This a great priced cd, but the content is why it is so cheap. It's a true-amateur album. Beethoven Lover is over her/his head. This is the real world, not a fantasy-everyone-likes-every-type-of-music world. Deal with it and agree with me. It isn't so great.

If the Bridge to Terabithia soundtrack skims the surface of the movie instead of mining for the richest material, it wasn't necessarily a bad move on the producers' part--given the film's 12-and-under target audience, the disc amounts to a snug fit for kids who walk out of a matinee wishing to extend the uplifting mood. And with a trove of songs this good, the grown-ups in their lives shouldn't have much of a problem listening in, even if they're only awaiting Aaron Zigman's four majestic disc-closing score selections. Of the nine bubble-gummish tracks aimed squarely at grade-schoolers, several come across as radio-ready: Jeremy Camp's "Right Here" is crazy-catchy, Jon McLaughlin's "Another Layer" avoids laying on the message too thick, and Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montana, handles herself with Hilary Duff-reminiscent poise on the charming "I Learned from You." Lament the shortened score if you will, but there's still a lot to like here. --Tammy La Gorce

Disney doesn't do soundtracks.......2007-06-27

This is not the first time that the Disney Corporation has blown a soundtrack. I really think that they don't know how to do a good soundtrack anymore. They seem so concerned about making it palatable to the tweens that they forget that they paid someone good money to actually write a background score. All they seem concerned about is including some pop tunes because they must think this sells soundtracks. Well, if anyone is listening out there in the world of Disney - people who collect soundtracks would have liked to have gotten one for this movie. There are about 74 minutes available on a CD - why not go ahead and fill them with both the pop stuff and the actual score. Disney either forgets the score (like they did for this movie) - or only includes a paltry amount (maybe 30-40 minutes). Somebody at Disney better wake up - and maybe release a complete score for this movie - otherwise, you're better off skipping this mess.

Don't be so down on this album!.......2007-04-01

As an older fan of the book Bridge To Terabithia, (I first read it as a kid over 25 years ago) I was skeptical about the movie. It turned out to be wonderful! As a classicly trained musician and fan of film scores, I was skeptical about the soundtrack album, which I knew would be geared toward kids, not soundtrack album collectors.

This album contains mostly pop songs, only a couple of which were used in the movie. I'm not a fan of today's pop music, and I'd never heard of any of the artists on this album. But I would not call the songs bubblegum or a disaster! They were a lot better than I thought they'd be. The lyrics are sweet, moving, and uplifting, and fit in well with the themes of the movie. The music is also uplifting and quite catchy.

The best part, of course, is the small selection of pieces from Aaron Zigman's film score, which is one of the best scores I've heard in a long time. Disney really dropped the ball by including only a small fraction of Zigman's score on this album. Fortunately, they chose some of the best parts of the score, including the enchanting Into The Forest and the soaring, breathtaking The Battle. Jesse's Bridge, which closes the album, is one of the most moving pieces of instrumental music you will ever hear.

It's a shame that Disney didn't add more of Aaron Zigman's score to this album. There was plenty of room - as it is now, the album only runs about 48 minutes. Because there's so little of the actual soundtrack on this album, I can't give it a five-star rating. But it's still a good album and worthy of four stars.

Don't be so down on this album! Listen to it, if only for the precious few tracks of Aaron Zigman's beautiful score. And the quality of the pop songs just might surprise you.

Where's Zooey!?!.......2007-03-11

This CD misses by a long shot by not including the classics that Zooey sung in the classroom with the kids. But what do you expect from a Disney production, to just look for an opportunity for them to promote their own recording artists! As for kids not being able to handle any "deep" songs, just take a look at the soundtracks for movies like "Shrek" and "Hoodwinked" where they show you can have great music soundtracks that appeals to a wide age range. Disney, once again you fall short on the soundtrack side.

Strange as it seems now, the last album John Lennon released in his lifetime was intended as a comeback, or rather as a parting wave at retirement: "Watching the Wheels" and "Beautiful Boy" celebrate the joys he found outside the star system, and "(Just Like) Starting Over" is a slightly awkward rocker about rejoining the domestic world that's also sort of about rejoining the pop world. The studio-pro arrangements are a little too slick, but Lennon rarely sounded happier. Ono, whose songs alternate with his in a series of thematic diptychs, was taking a stab at channeling her artier impulses into pop and is generally less successful--her voice works in a context of art-weirdness, but not as well in conventional tunes. This 2000 remastered reissue is fleshed out with a demo of "Help Me to Help Myself" and Ono's solo version of "Walking on Thin Ice," which was recorded on the same day her husband was shot to death. --Douglas Wolk

Unintended farewell.......2007-07-31

Despite the effort to make a collaborative album between John and Yoko (the liner notes describe it as a "heartplay"), this is effectively a Lennon EP overlaid with an Ono EP. The only track that really suggests any level of interaction between the two is "Every Man Has a Woman" - where John's voice faintly echoes behind Yoko's lead vocal.
Obviously, John's material on the album is what captures the interest of almost all listeners. His music here is stronger than that on any of his albums after "Imagine." "Woman" and "Just Like Starting Over" are the hits, but "Watching the Wheels" and "Beautiful Boy" are among Lennon's finest solo recordings. One shortcoming is the absence of strong rock material, other than the mild rockers "I'm Losing You," this is basically early 80's adult contemporary. John's music is bright and meticulously produced. By contrast, several of Yoko's songs aremore sonically adventurous New Wave/Dance tracks - one might suspect there was an attempt to level the playing field between the two. Yoko makes a serious effort at pop songcraft on this album and the follow-up "Milk and Honey," but flat and musically clichéd tunes like "Hard Times Are Over," "Beautiful Boys," and "Yes I'm You're Angel" weigh the album down.

John was a genius, Yoko is a dope........2007-07-26

I won't blubber on here about each song and it's meaning to me. Suffice it to say that John Lennon's contributions on this album are solid while Yoko Ono's are amateurish at best. How anyone can write that she goes toe to toe with John on this album, I just can't see. Those reviewers must be on crack. John was brilliant and Yoko sucks, plain and simple. That's all you need to know about this album. Hey maybe there is a job at a local aquarium for Yoko to polish her dolphin and whale squeaks. They might actually understand her. Just a thought.

Double Fantasy by John Lennon.......2007-05-13

I liked Lennon's music. He was beyond his age in music. I like your store, most of the time you have just what I want either new or used. That feature is nice. Being on a fixed income, it is hard sometimes to purchase new items in books. Buying used is in my income.

We thought they'd have time to get better together...........2007-01-31

It was a bad time. The Ayatollah had 52 Americans captive at our own embassy in Tehran (although Steve Dahl did come up with a great parody of the Knack's big hit that year, "Ah-ah-ah-ay-a-to-lah"). We were sure the world would end when Ronald Reagan took the White House the following year. Each ex-Beatle had ruled out ever having a reunion. I had totalled my blue 1970 pinto and was barely treading water in organic chemistry. The only sign of light ahead was an album John Lennon kept promising us all autumn long. So despite Dan Carpenter's failure to respond to my womanly charms, his decision to surprise me with a copy of "Double Fantasy" for Christmas on about December 1 was heartily welcomed.

We had heard there would be some Yoko solo songs. Like "I'm You're Angel", a direct rip-off on "Making Whoopee", as Yoko had to acknowledge in court a couple years later. We were just happy that after several years of a dry spell, we were getting some good John Lennon material.

Which is here. The most Beatlesque of the songs, and just a great pop song, is "Starting Over." The production is clean, the backup sounds great, and it's like the polar opposite of primal scream material like "Mother" and "Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out". "Beautiful Boy" is basically a lovely, calypso-like lullabye to Sean which has convinced millions that John originated the slogan seen on posters all over in the 60's and 70's, "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans"; "Dear Yoko" tries too hard to be a country song, but it almost succeeds (and without Ringo's lack of tuning); "Woman" is a lovely ballad, if you either actually like Ms. Ono or can keep out of your head images of the woman it's written for.

If what happened hadn't two weeks after the release of this album, it would have not done as well as it had. 3-4 moderately good Lennon songs are not enough to balance out five (from the vinyl album) awful Ono songs. The shame of that is, "Walking on Thin Ice", recorded on the night when Lennon would later be killed, and not released till many months later, is a passingly good Yoko Ono song, and she has consistently gotten better, pushing herself to seek more accessibility through the years (perhaps from guidance by her partner, Sam, and son Sean Lennon). But for whatever reason, Yoko Ono was not a viable pop singer at the time "Double Fantasy" was released, and Lennon was still too starry-eyed (in the romance sense and the arrogance sense) to see that.

On December 9, Dan and I met in kind of a stupor outside of our physics class. "It sucks," he said. "Yeah, it sucks," I nodded. The physics professor said something stupid about gun control. I still listen to Double Fantasy, skipping over Yoko's songs ("Walking on Thin Ice" isn't on the vinyl) remembering that night, Dan, Mr. Wilson, the pro-gun control physics professor and trying to remember what it was like when there were still four Beatles.

The Boston Symphony was at the peak of its powers when it engaged the 34-year-old Seiji Ozawa for this 1969 recording of Petrushka, in which the orchestra's then 24-year-old assistant conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas, played the extensive solo piano part. Ozawa, in those years, was capable of striking sparks with any orchestra he faced, and there is a palpable sense of excitement to the Petrushka he uncorks here. The accounts of The Rite of Spring and Fireworks, recorded in 1968 with the Chicago Symphony, are equally dynamic and colorful. An Odd Release But A Bargain Price for Excellent Performances.......2006-01-14

One wonders why this pairing of Seiji Ozawa and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Michael Tilson Thomas and the Boston Symphony Orchestra all under the spell of Stravinsky was issued. Not that the performances individually need reinforcement because they don't. Perhaps it is the long relationship between Tilson Thomas and Ozawa or their similar approaches to this repertoire that was the driver. Whatever the reason, here are recordings that are a treat.

Tilson Thomas elects the 1947 version of Petrushka and offers a clear-headed, rhythmically sound, exciting performance. The warm Boston sound is intact and enhances his overall mood of the work. Ozawa and the Chicago forces give an all stops out performance of 'Le Sacre du printemps', a performance that is about as visceral and pagan as any on record. And the bonus of the brief but effective 'Feu D'artifice' fantasy is given a robust reading.

There are many recordings of 'Le Sacre du printemps' in the recorded repertoire: obviously every conductor wants to imprint his mark on this masterpiece. The sonics are all-important when the work is recorded and in the case of this recording the sonics are excellent. But there may soon be a startling surprise for lovers of this mighty, historically important music. This week Esa-Pekka Salonen gave a resplendent, detailed, emotionally charged performance that was recorded live by DGG in the Disney Hall. And if the technicians are able to cope with the amazingly live clarity of the acoustics of this grand architectural triumph, the recording may be the gold standard immediately upon release. Salonen has previously and successfully recorded the work with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1990. Both the Rite of Spring and Petrouska are very well rendered in this recording... Ozawa's reading is insightful and very clear... The recording quality is great... Highly recommend this recording...

Best or not, you'll really love this Rite of Spring.......2004-06-29

Being among my top favorite pieces in the 20th century (after all, this piece turned the view of classical music upside down), I have tested myself listening to various versions by different performers. As far as much as I listened, my top two will have to be Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic (the most brashing, bashin, mind-crushin'!!!) and this equally thrilling performance with Ozawa leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Officially, this is a major highlight throughout Ozawa's conducting legacy, still a very young man with seemly imperishable vigor and force very equilavent to his teacher Lenny. The Boston Symphony is an excellent orchestra to work with (the woodwinds and brass especially); otherwize the Chicago Symphony could have been the only other choice.

In my perspective, I had to admit that, just by focusing on the level of being barbaric and noxious, it slightly lacks that to Lenny, but on the other hand, it's brilliant controlled nail-biting high tempo can cover that.

Definitely worth buying!!! GO FOR IT!!!!!

Totally convincing.......2004-06-16

I have three recordings of "The Rite of Spring". I've known it in every detail since 1972 when I was 17 and I know the score inside out. This is the only performance (recorded or live) that I've ever heard that raised the hairs on the back of my neck, made me grip the seat and break out into a cold sweat, and ultimately made me understand what "The Rite" is all about. The recording does full justice to the performance. This is a "must have" for anyone who wants to understand the point of the work.

The best Rite of Spring.......2004-03-28

Ozawa's account of Stravinsky's most famous ballet is nothing short of astounding. The conductor has the Chicago Symphony playing with total attention. What is so amazing about this recording is that the orchestra is completely controlled and balanced. Although one may prefer a more spontaneous sounding Rite, one would be hard pressed to find a recording with more energy, polish, and power.

Ozawa's Petrouchka (with Michael Tilson Thomas at the piano) is equally amazing. The beauty of phrasing and emotion Ozawa instills into the players of the Boston Symphony orchestra is chilling. Indeed, when this recording was made, Ozawa had just taken the reigns or the orchestra (however, over the years, his energy and intensity has lessened) and they play for their new music director with total conviction.

Fireworks, a short symphonic sketch by the young Stravinsky, shows the influences of his teachers, especially Paul Dukas in the orchestration. Although not a seminal work, the opus 4 is delightful.

The recording quality is of equal quality. Highly recommended.

A two-for-one combo of the first two Big Star albums (they only recorded three). Heard side by side, #1 Record and Radio City only add further testament to Big Star's seminal greatness. On the first album, Chris Bell and Alex Chilton share songwriting credit, though each brings a remarkably different sensibility to the band: Bell creates pure pop nuggets ("Feel") while Chilton swaggers with reckless melancholy ("Ballad of El Goodo," "Thirteen."). After Bell's departure, Chilton took control of the helm for Radio City, and what a ride it is. While not abandoning Bell's penchant for pop, Radio City careens wildly through some of the most exhilarating music ever created, from the rave-up opener, "O My Soul," to the pure pop masterpiece "September Girls" to the whimsical ditty "I'm in Love with a Girl." It's too bad that Big Star didn't create more albums, but thank God they made the ones they did. --Tod Nelson

R.E.M. and Cheap Trick are but 2 artists that have been influenced by Big Star. This cd includes their 2 best albums. Highly recommended for fans of Badfinger, the Raspberries, and of power pop in general.

Behind the Myth and the Legend, Two Fine Rock Albums.......2007-06-01

Before irony was sooooo cool, the band headed by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell revelled in it. They took their name from a grocery store chain, not from some false impression that they were or would become Big Stars. (Though Chilton had sung lead on the #1 single "The Letter" five years earlier.) And while the name of their debut could be taken to mean just that - as in record number one - they came nowhere near having a hit record, let alone a #1 Record. Chilton and Bell shared songwriting credits on this album, but generally the songs were written by one or the other. The first four songs on #1 Record make the difference in their styles abundantly clear. Bell's pop supernova "Feel" is answered by Chilton's soul-searching but hopeful "The Ballad of El Goodo". Bell strikes back with the power pop of "In the Street", only to be countered with Chilton's ode to pubescence, "Thirteen". Although Alex Chilton is the better remembered one, as he remained in the band for all three albums, it is obvious on this record that the band belonged equally to both of them. Before the end of the disc's first half, however, comes "The India Song". This has always been one my favorite tracks on #1 Record, but I only recently learned that it was written by bassist Andy Hummell. (This, coupled with drummer Jody Stephens "For You" on Third/Sister Lovers, demonstrated the rhythm section members were just as capable of writing a Big Star-quality song.) There is plenty of excellent but modest electric guitar on #1 Record, especially the in-your-face riffing of "Don't Lie To Me" and the wah-wah solo on "When My Baby's Beside Me". The second half of the record, however, consists of mainly acoustic numbers, which are at least every bit as fine as the album's rockers. A highlight among these tracks is "Watch The Sunrise". With the trading acoustic guitars before the lyrics begin, this 3:41 song is a bit of a mini-suite. The titles are indicative of the pensive nature of these songs. For example, a track called "Give Me Another Chance" is followed by one called "Try Again".

Bell had left Big Star after #1 Record, but did put in a few appearances on the follow-up, Radio City. (Once again, that title conjures up images of stardom that was not to be.) Chilton did most of the writing himself, with Hummell co-writing several songs and contributing another of his own compositions, the excellent "Way Out West". This album contains Big Star's best-known song, "September Gurls". I will admit that I find Radio City to be less that totally brilliant, but surely I will concede that this is the greatest power pop song ever, right?. Well, no, actually. Yes, it features all of the essential elements of a great pop song: tender but rocking guitar, a strong bass line, nonsense lyrics, and cherub-like vocals. However, there is another song by a different band that mix these element in an even more perfect blend. I have said it before, I say it now, and I will say it again in the future: the greatest power pop song ever is "Shake Some Action" by The Flamin' Groovies. But of course, this doesn't make "September Gurls" any less of a song. It is the best song on the album and the reason why Big Star has the reputation as a pop band that it does. "You Get What You Deserve" and "Back of a Car" certainly don't hurt, and "What's Going Ahn" and "I'm In Love With a Girl" recall the pensive moments from #1 Record.

Big Star has been described as the quintessential American power pop group and the quintessential cult band. I am not sure that any artist can be considered quintessential in either of these categories, particularly power pop, whose quintessence is better defined by songs than by bands. Granted, Big Star's potency in this genre is obvious on these albums. However, that they were more than just a power pop band is evidenced by the fact that their influence was equally strong on both brooding alternative rock and radio-friendly indie pop. For this reason, I believe that it is Third/Sister Lovers that makes the single best case for Big Star as a great and influential band. Alas, Chris Bell can't get any credit for that. But I do consider #1 Record to be the better of their first two albums, and for that he deserves a lot of credit. Having #1 Record and Radio City on a single disc makes having both of them more worthwhile, and avoiding getting bogged down in the legend of these recordings allows two very fine individual albums to rise to the surface.

Important and overlooked classic rock release more enticing as a twofer. .......2007-04-20

When put together, the first two of Big Star's few noteworthy albums in a brief career seems essential to any classic rock purist, although casual listeners may find some material more stale then the legendary album's reputation may suggest. Make no mistake, right away the band proves what they are capable of with a great one-two punch..Sadly though, few songs on #1 Record rise to the emotional highs and thoughtfully composed flow of The Ballad Of El Goodo. Most play out more as well constructed, but evidently so, rock and pop which in ways pays worthy tribute to some of the better constructed British rock at the time but rarely transcends their construct like that second track does so well. Showing an utter confidence in the largely acoustic playing though, it seems clear why even half an idea from the Bell and Chilton pairing offered such memorable potential and puzzles as to why commercial success did not follow.

As satisfying as # 1 may be, Radio City takes the cake for me, only cementing Alex Chilton's status as a one man riff machine of brilliance. His leads are more focused here, and some of his power-pop musings are amongst histories shining examples. A worthy purchase for anyone wanting a fun, at times inspired musical history of electric guitar from an underrated mainstay.

Pleasing Power Pop.......2007-03-31

#1 Record/Radio City is a really fun two-fer album featuring Big Star's first two albums. Big Star first formed in 1971. Band members include the songwriting duo of Chris Bell and Alex Chilton, as well as Andy Hummel and drummer Jody Stevens. They released their debut - #1 Record in 1972.
This is a wonderful pristine power pop punch of an album! Filled with happy sunny bliss harmonies. Radio City is a bit slowed down and quieter, but both together go really well. Although these albums didn't sell well and the band fell into obscurity.
If there are any fans of Teenage Fan Club, Velvet Crush or even R.E.M.- (just about any band who sings sweet sad songs, may have been inspired)You may LOVE Big Star - This is one of the first who entered into the power-pop genre. Although Chris Bell and Alex Chilton did model themselves after John Lennon & Paul McCartney.
Such a fun two-fer to listen to, and a total of 24 songs at 73 minutes- I just love it! - 5 stars

Great rock'n'roll record a few years late.......2007-03-04

Radio City came out at the wrong time. Had it come out five year previous it would have been a big hit. It's almost a perfect record. Chilton sings wonderfully and plays even better guitar. But nobody was listening to that anymore in 1974. #1 Record tends a bit more toward radio soft rock 1972 style (interrupted by 3 or 4 rockers), but it's pretty beguiling soft stuff, very melodic and featuring curious lyrics. All the nonsense about influence you read on here is pretty funny. Nobody really enjoys music for its "influence". And this was an act that was very heavily influenced by myriad mid-sixties performers, Beatles and Byrds foremost among them.
