Album Description
Recorded in Autumn 2006 in a converted home studio in Maine, LIGHT AT THE END OF THE WORLD is ERASURE'S return to pop form after 2006's critically-acclaimed acoustic album, UNION STREET. Features the single, "I Could Fall In Love With You". Andy Bell declares: "This album is to show people that our pop isn't finished... it's saying we can still do it, we can still write great songs".
Customer Reviews:
AMAZING GRACE!.......2007-07-25
I love Erasure and have for over 20 years. I listen to Erasure and Marc Almond exclusively, as I find them full of heart and soul that is profoudly moving. At first I was thrown off by this album since it is so different. It took me about 2 weeks to fall in love with it but now I am hooked! The songs have wonderful music and the words are so sexy! It's great to dance to! The songs are equally profound as in the past and do touch my soul like only Erasure can do. Very highly recommended. Golden Heart and How My Eyes Adore You are my favorites. I love this album and it is one of the best yet!
Vintage Vince and Andy - Welcome Back Erasure!.......2007-05-31
I've been an Erasure fan since the beginning -- unlike many who got on board much later, I actually remember the rare Thomas the Train cover for "Oh L'Amour" -- and I have to say this is a terrific album! After the interesting but ultimately unsatisfying reinvention for "Union Street" and the equally interesting but not terribly original "Other People's Songs" -- and let's not even talk about "Loveboat", this is a much-needed return to their vintage synth-driven sound.
More upbeat and peppy than "Nightbird" (which I also loved), "Light at the End of the World" sounds like a cross between "Cowboy" and "Wild!" to me -- with a little bit of "Chorus" and "I Say I Say I Say" thrown in for good measure. "Sucker For Love" sounds like an updated version of "La Gloria", and it's even more fun. "Sunday Girl" is a perfect synthpop masterpiece. "I Could Fall In Love With You" puts me in mind of "Don't Say Your Love Is Killing Me", and so it goes on with all Vince's vintage bleeps, buzzes, and knob-twiddling. By the way, if you've got quick ears, you'll also here echoes of "Always", "Treasure", "Snappy", "Crown of Thorns", and even "March On Down The Line". Listen closely! :)
It sounds like he's dusted off some of the old analog keyboards and sequencers, to great effect. Andy's vocals are in tip-top shape, only stretched a little on the deepest notes (like the notes he used to lose himself in so beautifully on "You Surround Me"). A fantastic album, and it couldn't come at a better time.
Welcome back, Erasure!
STOP! Stand there where you are...and DON'T buy this version of the CD!!!.......2007-05-23
Immediately search for the album again and get the 'limited edition' version with the two bonus tracks. It's less money than this version--and the two bonus tracks are two of Erasure's best!!!

Amazon.com essential recording
Never underestimate Madonna's power of persuasion: By nearly all critical accounts, Ray of Light, Madonna's first album of new material since 1994's Bedtime Stories, and her first since motherhood, is her richest, most accomplished record yet. While Ray of Light is being tagged as Madonna's big leap into electronica, it's important to note two things: First, her music has always had close ties to dance culture, and, second, her collaborator William Orbit is no Chemical Brother. Though it has all the latest blips, bleeps, and crackles electronica has to offer, Ray of Light is still largely an adult album, completely within Madonna's realm. Still, Orbit's tasteful sonic constructions provide Madonna with her most adventurous, hippest musical backdrop ever. What's more, the arrangements and production are understated enough to highlight an even bigger development: Fresh from singing lessons on the Evita set, Madonna's vocal range, depth, and clarity have never been stronger. But larger pipes don't necessarily make for deeper, truer music. Never a master lyricist, Madonna's words have worked best when they've practically been slogans ("Vogue," "Express Yourself"). This time she goes for more emotional depth, and even tries her hand at ethno-techno-mysticism ("Shanti/Ashtangi"). She largely stumbles, however. The tone conveyed on songs like "Nothing Really Matters" is a self-centered pat on the back that belies her claim to a newfound altruism. It's enough to make you wonder, now that Madonna's given up being our material girl, if maybe she's set her sights on becoming the center of our spiritual world too. --Roni Sarig
Customer Reviews:
Madonna truly brings light to each and every song.......2007-07-29
This is one of the best Madonna albums ever. You don't hear the raunchy, sexual lyrics. You only hear lyrics that are meant to enlighten, and change you. Most of the songs are encouraging, and some are heartfelt. A must have for any Madonna fan.
Lighting up the music.......2007-07-23
This further proves the fact that Madonna is a steady and everlasting presence in the world of music. Like with her previous albums she secures her place, not to be removed. This particular album solidifies her as a steady and continuous hit making machine. "The power of goodbye" quickly became one of my favorite songs, it's message is constant and impacting one, and "Frozen" is also unforgettable and if you've been through things in relationships these songs are easy to identify with. Madonna effortlessly brings us lyrics to cherish in a world of relentless chaos. Yoga, palates, and love of music keeps her looking flawless so she not only offers great music but ageless photos as well.
Nothing Makes The Darkness Go Like The Light..........2007-07-01
Truly. After hearing this Album I can say I felt enlightened. It's true that "Ray Of Light" is one of Madonna's best pieces of Music since "Like A Prayer". It's spiritual like it's pedecessoer 9 years before, but in a different way. While "Prayer" focuses on her Christian or catholic faith, "Light" focused more on M's New Religion. Kaballah. The sound of this album is very Hindu and Asian sounding. Overall "Prayer" was more religious, but "ROL" is definetly more spiritual, and overall more enlightening.
The Album opens with very liquid, watery sounds, hence the First tracks title "Drowned World". It doesn't get the album off to a cracking or even energetic start, but it does set the tone for things to come. It's a half decent track, but it does it's job of relaxing you and clearing your mind.
Up next is a similar, but more tropical sounding track called "Swim". This song like the previous is very calming, but feels warmer than Drowned World. It has a message of salvation. "Night is getting colder. sometimes life feels like it's a curse. We can't carry these sins on our backs. Don't wanna carry anymore. Were gonna carry this train of the track. gonna swim to the ocean floor". Overall this song is very hypnotic, and calming. A good song to play if you're stressed.
next we are thrown from a surreal, watery world into a world of pulsing dance beats, and techno vibes. YEAH. IT'S THE TITLE TRACK. YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE - it's One you can dance to. Very energetic, and a feel good song.
"Candy Perfume Girl" is up next, and while not one of the album's best tracks it's nothing worth skipping. Like "Swim" it's very hypnotic and INDIE sounding. Pretty cool song, and different from anything she had done before.
Number 5 is a Techno trance song called "Skin". It's easily one of the Album's best, and most energetic songs. Definetly one of my faves. It's very strange, but it has a lot of artistry to it and is very enjoyable. It has some of the best lyrics on the album.
"Nothing Really Matters" is a dance song from the album, and once again is not the typical Madonna we were used to before ROL came along, but it is a very good club song, and has a great beat. Also some great instrumental parts. Once again the songs message is about salvation and being saved. "Nothing takes the past away like the future. Nothing makes the darkness go like the light. You're shelter from the storm. Give me comfort in your arms".
"Sky Fits Heaven" is probably THE albums BEST song. Surprisingly it wasnt a single, but could have been. It's a sonic techno track, and is pure energy at it's best. An Energetic awesome dance beat mixed with great lyrics...."Traveling down this road. Watching the signs as I go. I think i'll follow my heart, It's a very good place to start".
A song sung entirely in Sanskrit(an ancient indian language) is up next. it's called "Shanti/Ashtangi". Though I didn't understand this track I was fascinated with it. It is VERY Hindu sounding, and has a lot of Asian culture to it. Overall I think it's one of the albums best songs.
"Frozen" is one of my Favourite songs from the Album. it's message is to let Love kill all your fears and hate, because as long as you hold onto them you're Frozen as a person. The Lyrics are very true, and this song has a great message. I love the Hindu sounds once again, and the Indian chants she does. It's like being in a temple. this song also had an awesome video, where Madonna is seen floating above the mojive desert.
"Power Of Goodbye" is one of the Albums ballads, and is very good. I think the message is no matter how bad things are in your life you can always escape, because nothing goes on forever. It's like saying goodbye to your troubles.
"To have, and not to hold" is a mid tempo hindu sounding song. It's about longing to have someone, but they won't let you get close enough to them. It's mediocre at best, but still enjoyable.
"Little Star" is a pretty song about her new born daughter Lourdes. It's a very sweet mid tempo dance track. It has some spiritual lyrics. "God gave a present to me. Made of Flesh and Bones. My Life. My Soul. You make my Spirit Whole". It's a sweet song.
You could think of the Album's closer "Mer Girl" as this Album's own version of "Promise To Try". It's about Madonna's mother, but unlike 1989's "Promise To Try" it's a much darker, colder song. It's the Albums most Haunting track, and the most terrfying track Madonna will probably ever do. Some people say this was not a good track to close the Album on, and something more enlightening should have been chosen, or even that this track should have been left off the Album completely. But I think it's a great song. In my oppinion the Albums most fascenating track.
The Album ends with the lyrics "I smelled her flesh. Her Rotting bones. Her decay. I ran. And I Ran. I'm still running Away.......
The Japanese Import version of this album, has an amazing bonus track - "Has To Be". It's worth the money for that 1 track alone.
The album that made the computer as an instrument a mainstream idea.......2007-02-14
The single Ray of Light is absolutely one of the best songs of Madonna's career. At the time this cd was made it seemed more like a novelty - songs all done on a pc - and I really didn't expect to find any good songs. So it was a big surprise to be blown away by the title track.
The rest of the cd is not as good unfortunately but that doesn't mean this isn't a five star effort. This is a career changing or career making release and Madonna makes the most of it.
Highly recommended just to find out what all the fuss is about.
definitely brought madonna back to the top.......2007-02-11
by the time this album came out, I had already been a madonna fan since the like a virgin/true blue days. Her comeback was so strong with the frozen video and song that my mother ended up buying the CD before I could have a chance to get it and I ended up keeping it although it wasn't the madonna album I listened to the most(those would be like a virgin, erotica, confessions on a dancefloor). My mom somehow came across it again recently and plays it around the house all the time and I can honestly say that I can't tell it was produced in the 90's, it's timeless music with an amazing sound that will never grow old. She touches on different musical styles presented in a way that makes it stand out from her previous albums. It was also a nice change from her habit of releasing ballads through the mid 90's, ray of light had the spark that was lacking in her music in the mid 90's. I don't know what it is but ever since this album, she's made consistent albums and has reached her most creative peak in her 40's, amazing woman!

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15
Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.
Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04
My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.
More Great Fun.......2006-03-13
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.
One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10
My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!
Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15
The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08
John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.
Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31
Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.
Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?
Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.
One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.
While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.
complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14
Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.
Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09
This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.
Complete, but poor quality.......2005-09-25
I have been learning some ragtime and wanted to hear more to find other selections to learn. Listened to Maple Leaf Rag, my favorite, first and was disappointed. Listened to others and was more disappointed. Maple flies - much faster than anyone would play it, you can't make out some of the phrases. And talk about ad libs - Tempo, dynamics, embelishments, nuances - I really think he plays some wrong notes too because he's going so fast. It's really a poor recording - and that's just on Maple Leaf. Others with "intros" start quick and then there's a grand pause, not a rest, but nearly a five second break. It's hard to argue how Joplin would have played it, but this is hardly anything I want to try to imitate. The only qualitating factor is the number of songs for the price. A lot of variety of a poor interpretation is only worth 3 stars. if that. Look for Rifkin or a copy that is as written to listen to first, then go for the ad libs and "artistic interpretations"

wonderful.......2007-07-22
These CD's were wonderful. When I drive in the Sierra Nevada mountians I want something peaceful but not boring. I love, love, love it.
Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23
If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.
I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25
I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.
Great Music as usual.......2002-10-08
This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are
favorites of audiences everywhere
in the world...
A gem!.......2001-10-29
Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.
As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Album Description
Joey McIntyre is a modern throwback to the classic song-and-dance men of show business, a veteran who has starred on Broadway (in "Wicked") and off (Jonathan Larson's "tick, tick, Boom!"), TV (Dancing with the Stars, Boston Public), film (Tony and Tina's Wedding, The Fantasticks), records (selling 35 million as the youngest New Kid on the Block and a hit solo single, "Stay the Same") and the concert stage. Inspired to do the album by seeing Frank Sinatra perform at L.A.'s Greek Theater just a few years before the legendary crooner's death, McIntyre covers these songs "his way." "This is the music I grew up listening to," he says. "These songs are still so fresh. We tried to respect where they came from, but also give it a modern pop sensibility that reflects the times. It's not a throwback. This record is essentially who I am." McIntyre performed several of the songs from the album during the 38-city Dancing with the Stars--The Tour. "I always wanted to study dance and the show was like going to school. I really learned ballroom dancing. I knew I'd be able to perform before millions of people. I just didn't know it would be 20 million." On Talk to Me, he leads with a firm right hand straight to your heart, launching the next round of his career as a 21st century song and dance man.
Customer Reviews:
Not the new kid on the block anymore!.......2007-05-12
Wow! My partner has all Joey's solo cd's and he's been alright to me, but this cd of standards is really pleasing to listen to. Then we saw him live about a week or two after purchasing this cd. He was amazing! It was SO much fun to see him live. If you get a chance...don't miss it. You will NOT regret it.
Talk To Me.......2007-03-20
It is so good and it keeps me calm and refreshed and everything. That is so good. Thank you so much and keep making your own cd albums so I can hear from you. Thank you!
Wow!!!!!.......2007-03-08
Having been a fan of Joey since the way old days of NKOTB and his solo efforts, I must say that this cd will erase all notions that he is still a teeny bopper! His take on the old standards are all well orchestrated....his voice is smooth sounding and the production is very impressive! This cd should bring him more attention, credit, kudos and more fans! Way to go, J!!!!!!!!
Smooth Operator.......2007-03-07
In this latest album McIntyre pays homage to his boyhood idol Frank Sinatra. By finally recording an album of standards he also does his father proud! Long ago, in another life, Joey McIntyre was the baby faced member of THE original boy band, "New Kids on the Block". When that group parted ways after a decade of mega stardom Joey took time to return to his acting roots before returning to the record business. In 1999 he sealed his fate as a pop artist with a solo release that got air play across the country, sold well and put him back on the map and on our TV sets climbing the TRL charts. Subsequent albums did not get as much attention but "Talk to Me" puts him back on the map. McIntyre covers classics like "All the Way" and "My Funny Valentine" with ease. His respect for the music is tangible. Joey also takes a light hearted approach to tunes such as "Makin' Whoopee" and "Come Dance With Me" which are stamped with his unique sense of style. With this release, a whole new generation of listeners has a chance to embrace this sound! Long time fans will not be disappointed and new listeners will no doubt be pleasantly surprised. In my opinion this album is McIntyre at his best!

A must have CD.......2007-01-14
For anyone who likes Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, this CD is a must have.
Arthur at his best........2002-03-20
Arthur Fiedler made listening to classical music fun. Try a listen to 'Pomp and Circumstance', one of my favourite pieces of classical music. 'William Tell Overture' shines as does most of the material on this album. Well recorded for it's day. Fiedler is missed.
Fiedler's Finest.......2002-02-16
I had the opportunity of playing in an orchestra under Maestro Fiedler. He was a tough, no nonsense conductor who expected crisp, lyrical, and expressive. His musical interpretations of everything from Sabre Dance to Syncopated Clock; from Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 to his love for the Beatles, sets him as the ruler supreme in pop music. I only hope RCA will continue to reissue his LPs so a new generation knows the man and his music. Bravo!
what a collaboration of musical excellence, oh what style!.......1999-06-08
I bought this CD a little over a year ago and it is still among my favorites. "Polvetsian Dances" is excellent no matter what your interests. The full version of "Pomp and Circumstance" as well as "The William Tell Overature" are wonderful; The "Procession of the Nobles" is victorious and galliant; the lyrical complexity of "Farandole" is haunting. This is a brilliant compilation of musical excellence.

I love this album.......2007-07-26
Trip the Light Fantastic is a pop masterpiece.
Funk sensations to mirror ball bliss to the best love song I have heard in years: What Have We Started?, which is rivaled by the hopeful Today the Sun's On Us.
Sophie even makes stalking fun: "Run to where you want...I am going to find you...There ain't no distance far enough..There ain't no engine fast enough. I am going to Catch You."
I will be waking up with these songs in my head for weeks.
Supersonic.......2007-07-24
Sophie Ellis has slowly worked her way into what is now a daily play.
She first grabbed my attention with Murder on the Dance Floor and soon after, Mixed Up World. When Catch You hit the play lists, it was exactly what I had hoped for and Supersonic has gone even beyond! I can't stop listening to this song!
More of the same.......2007-07-10
If you've heard one Sophie Ellis-Bextor album, you've heard them all. Mostly- true. Each album has a slightly different feel. "Read My Lips" was disco. "Shoot From the Hip" was more, hmmm experimental? atmospheric? With "Trip the Light Fantastic" she's treading steadily in the middle of the road with solid pop shoes on. More listenable than "Hip" and with more emotional diversity than "Lips", "Trip" delivers exactly the same Sophie vocals. Beautiful, distinct, and sultry - yes, but sadly prone to monotony if the song doesn't provide some strong musical moments.
Some have said that "Supersonic" is the 'worst' song on the album. I like it for providing a different feeling from the rest of the album. The song has energy. Most of the album is made up of synth beats that complement but blend with Sophie's already hypnotic, if not meditative, vocals. "Catch You", "Love is Here", "Only One", "China Heart", and "Today, the Sun's on Us" provide guitars, stanzas, choruses, bridges, and emotional changes in the vocals. They stand out, to me, as stronger songs than the likes of "If I Can't Dance", and "The Distance Between Us" which start with a generic synth sound and after 3 or 4 odd minutes of innocuous vocals you find yourself with no idea of what just passed.
I am a fan and am pleased as punch to have this album. However, I think that Sophie should break out of her shell a little more and take a few more risks with her vocal stylings. Not because I dislike "Lips", "Hip", and "Trip", but we have that sound already. Overall, It's beautiful, a good listen. I could drop a couple of songs but, hey, I liked the ones others didn't, so- Something for everyone I suppose.
"Love is Here" is worth buying the album- This really ought to be a single. "What Have We Started" is gorgeous. It has violins, cymbals, a sort of 'later Abba' rock-pop melody and the best Vocals on the album.
Sheer brilliance; it simply doesn't get any better than this.........2007-06-15
The unmistakeable voice of Sophie Ellis has a heavenly collision with a flawless array of pop diddies making this one of the must have Summer albums of all time. Her previous two releases were wonderfully catchy but plagued with some unfortunately low points. This is truly her first cohesive piece of entertainment, retaining the sense of fun, sophistication, and sass that one comes to expect, but infused with a maturity lacking in her earlier work. Sophie, working with a fine selection of craftsmen including songstress and past pop star Cathy Dennis (Cant' Get You Out Of My Head) and Dan Gillespie from the Feeling, create a very cohesive piece of work that's listenable through and through with the exception of the bonus track Supersonic, written with Fred Schnieder of B-52's; the song is a terrible piece of hideousness, a scab on an otherwise flawless complexion if you will. Miracously ice princess Sophie mangages to imbue the other excellent tracks with an unfamiliar warmth that certainly have lacked some "human touch" in the past. Too many above par tracks to mention but singles "Catch You" and "Me And My Imagination" are two of the strongest tracks she's ever recorded, and all of the songs have their moments to shine, peppered with gorgeous moments of genius and sprinkled with beautiful pop melodies. "Love Is Here" is destined to an enormous hit and sits proudly alongside her dance classics "Murder On The Dance Floor" & "Take Me Home". Thanks Sophie for this Summer gift!
Best of the Three.......2007-06-14
I was really looking forward to this album, and the first time through it really didn't grab my attention. After a few more listenings, I'm convinced it's her best. There is a lot of electric guitar on this album (something I wasn't expecting, given the synth-heavy arrangements of her previous two sets) and plenty of pure pop songs (i.e. not as many purely dance-oriented tracks as in the past). After I got my head around the changes, I really began to enjoy what IS here. The hooks, lyrics and arrangements are all clever and captivating, and there isn't one track on the album that I'd skip. I do recommend this (UK) version, because I think "Can't Have It All" (one of the UK bonus tracks) is the absolute best thing on here. A great pop tune with a catchy hook, emotional lyrics and a superb buildup. I agree with the reviewer who stated that the first two singles have excellent non-album b-sides, particularly "Down With Love" and "Move to the Music." Get your hands on them if you can. Overall, the best thing here is Sophie's voice and attitude. Love her or hate her, she sounds like absolutely no one else and she's got a distinctive flair that's undeniable.
