5 out of 5 stars First time listener.......2004-12-31

Before I listened to this artist on Lanch, I never heard of him before. I was amazed at how well a man from England could take the old Southwest atmosphere and create such a beautiful stream of music. I listen to it and I feel as though I am living during the time when this land was new, which I think is what his purpose was. The way he was able to incorporate the sound of this lands ancestors (by that I mean Native Americans) and his style of New Age is simply incredible. I look forward to what this man comes up with in the future.

5 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR !.......2002-08-18

This was a birthday present to ME from ME (i do this every year)this is about my 5th or 6th cd of his between me & my husband,(he always wants to borrow this one.once again Nicholas has come through,we live in Az most of his music is fron the southwest i have to admit i was doubtful at first BUT... he has really shown his talents by going to the midwest.Pop it in the cd player & let your mind wander you WONT be disapointed.

Nicholas Gunn is a classically trained and superbly talented flutist, keyboardist, and percussionist. In Through The Great Smoky Mountains, Gunn draws upon his native ability and obvious talent to musically conjure and reflect the spectacular scenery and breath-taking beauty of the Appalachian mountain range that straddles the boarder of Tennessee and North Carolina. The memorable and enthusiastically recommended selections comprising Through The Great Smoky Mountains include: Call of the Wild; The Highest Point; Cade's Cove; Chieftan's Song; The Place Of Blue Smoke; Azalea Sunrise; Trail of Tears; Awakening; Ramsey Cascades; Passage Through Ancient Relics; and Dance of Light.

5 out of 5 stars Simply His Best.......2002-08-01

Nicholas Gunn simply never misses the mark! This record is current in it's sound and production style. it seems as though Nicholas is an artist that is always moving with the times yet remaining loyal to certain techniques he has developed over the years. I cannot begin to tell someone how much I have enjoyed this record, you simply have to experience it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Through the Great Smoky Mountains.......2002-07-28

Nicholas Gunn is at his best when his music has a more narrative quality. This album recreates that same narrative feeling that he put into his Grand Canyon masterpiece. I am not sure that I don't like this one even more. At first I thought the "out west", native American quality was a little out of place. Then I realized that this land was once the "hunting ground" of the Cherokees and other "Indians." The piece is also a little more reflective and haunting than the Grand Canyon works, which goes along with the more haunting and "settled" quality of the Smoky Mountains. All I can say is that I can't wait for more of this kind of work from him.

5 out of 5 stars A truly great composition . . ........2007-05-24

This is an emotionally powerful recording. One of my all-time favorites.

5 out of 5 stars KikiD.......2006-04-14

To me, this music spurs the imagination of the Smokies' grandeur, majesty, beauty, inspiration. It inspires honoring, rememberings, peace, thoughtfulness, filling the soul with warmth, and gratitude. Too bad it doesn't have smell-o-vision, to smell the sweet, dew laden early morn hills, wild flowers, fallen leaves, crisp winter winds, of this, the nations most beautiful of National Parks! Not that I've ever been there, but I can just imagine - close my eyes, and imagine...thanks to this music.

5 out of 5 stars Music so grand that it transcends the Smokies.......2002-01-10

Gary Remal Malkin has written music here that certainly evokes the Great Smokies, but its beauty so sweeping that to me it easily encompasses much more of America than just this national park. I have used this music to remind me of journeys to other national parks and found it to be equally appropriate out west. It blends orchestral panoramas with native overtones and down-home folk music, and it succeeds admirably.

More recently, the track "The Courage to Dream" has gotten me through the tragedy of September 11, 2001. It is as if Malkin had written it as an anthem for our recovery, and I would like to see it used in a movie or documentary. It almost begs to be played against the kinds of strong emotional imagery we've seen in the media recently as we renew our strength and rekindle our hopes.

Having deemed this CD a "keeper", and a cherished one at that, I was not surprised to later discover that Malkin is an accomplished soundtrack writer. He has done TV scoring for "Unsolved Mysteries" among other projects, and he is adept at many different styles. If you're expecting some bland New Age CD that needs to be sold in some park's visitor center, this isn't the one. I hope to hear much more from this fine composer.

5 out of 5 stars This is wonderful.......2000-12-16

My husband and I purchased this recording at the visitor center as we entered the park, and played it during our drive through the main road. The music is beautiful and very evocative of the park, as well as bringing in the Cherokee who live in the area. It is a very touching and memorable recording.

5 out of 5 stars I can't remember the last time I was so thrilled ..........2000-07-12

... to find a new artist. Well, new to me. I happened upon this CD by chance. It was in a family member's disc changer and began to play when the CD I had selected was over. I was mesmerized. I must have listened to Mountain Majesty 10 times in a row. It's a lullaby. The music really does paint images of nature. You can almost feel the breezes and see the sunsets. And it'll make you want to move to a place that's majestic and unspoiled and serene. But don't be fooled: This isn't a trite collection of canned nature tunes. The subtle voices and violins and guitars and keyboards and horns blend twinges of country beautifully into sweeping orchestrations. I'm reminded of James Newton Howard's score for "The Prince of Tides" in some places, but hard pressed to compare some of Malkin's work to anyone else in others. A true find for anyone who appreciates the art of composing, as well as anyone who just needs to turn off the lights and unwind from a long, hard day.

5 out of 5 stars 3D music to relax - head to toe.......2006-09-02

This review is for all Orange Tree Productions CDs, recorded for the National Park Series. The music is incredible; recorded using a special binaural microphone that captures the sounds of nature in 3D. The effect is the most amazing music I've heard. These CDs record the sounds of nature including not just standard bird songs but also sounds of whistling wind on a desert plateau, misting rain in the forest, distant thunder on the horizon, a tricking creek in the woods, massive rivers plowing thru the valley, a crackling campfire and popping wood, horses and mules plodding along, waves pounding the seashore, seagulls flying overhead, and other sounds. These sounds are then mixed with beautiful melodies w/ flute, piano, and other instruments to create the most incredible mood music I have ever heard. You will actually feel like you are there experiencing nature. Each CD produced by Orange Tree is impeccable, a jewel in itself. I cannot recommend enough that listeners looking for total relaxation get these CDs. Orange Tree produces quite an impressive list of CDs, each based on sounds and music from a certain geographical area or national park. My first exposure to Orange Tree was in a bed & breakfast in Colorado. I bought Sounds of the Rocky Mountains and have since collected over 10 CDs, each for a different National Park. It is well worth the money if you are looking for a total audio natural experience in 3D.
