She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

While not overly generous at 55 minutes, the highlights album of the 1987 original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables is intelligently selected and likely to prove satisfying to most fans. It includes the best-loved numbers of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score, beautiful ballads ("Bring Him Home," "I Dreamed a Dream") and rousing anthems ("One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?") alike, but eliminates some choral numbers ("Lovely Ladies"), redundancies ("Red and Black"), and connective tissue that propels the plot along ("Valjean Arrested," "Come to Me (Fantine's Death)"). Sure, a more perfect selection could have lasted longer than half of the two-disc set's 104 minutes by adding "At the End of the Day" and "In My Life," among others, but it's still a good representation on a convenient single disc. Of course, those who always want to re-create the theatrical experience will never be satisfied with a highlights album.Re-creating their roles from the London production, Colm Wilkinson plays the heroic Valjean and Frances Ruffelle is the despondent Eponine. Randy Graff (Fantine), Terrence Mann (Javert), David Bryant (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Michael Maguire (Enjolras), and Leo Burmester and Jennifer Butt (the Thénardiers) fill out the cast. --David Horiuchi

Great Score, But Highlights Missing Critical Songs.......2005-08-05
While I normally enjoy "highlight" cds, this one clocks in at a mere 55 minutes and could have easily included a couple of additional tunes (thus losing one star). Most notably missing: "At The End Of The Day", "Come To Me", "Red And Black", and "In My Life". The show's most memorable songs, however, are included.
Best tracks:
I Dreamed A Dream
Master Of The House
Stars
Do You Hear The People Sing
On My Own
A Little Fall Of Rain
Bring Him Home
Empty Chairs At Empty Tables
Great cast, great score ... even a good buy. But I would suggest the full double-disc score instead.

Stanley Kubrick's demanding perfectionism in all aspects of the filmmaking process has led to some of the most memorable soundtracks of the modern era. Kubrick's taste for the classics led to his scrapping Alex North's original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey in lieu of the "temporary" tracks he had used for editing, turning Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra into an unlikely 20th-century pop icon. For his 1971 adaptation of Anthony Burgess's cautionary future-shocker, Kubrick once again turned to the classics. Malcolm McDowell's protagonist Droog Alex's taste for Beethoven is given a nice tweaking by Moog pioneer Walter (now Wendy) Carlos's synthesized take on the glorious Ninth Symphony. Some have complained that the now-primitive electronics involved give it a dated feel. Disturbingly--and effectively--other-worldly is more like it. Kubrick also imbues repertory standards by Rossini and Elgar with dark, frequently hilarious irony, and makes Gene Kelly's sunny reading of "Singin' In The Rain" the underscore to an all-too-accurate prediction of societal nightmares to come. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Prisoner 6 double-five 3-2-1.......2007-03-16
Most of the CLOCKWORK ORANGE soundtrack's classical selections are by Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. These spirited Beethoven and Rossini interpretations remain some of the very best ever recorded.
The excerpt of Wendy's "Timesteps" is the most compelling piece here. In the film, this stark aural collage is background to Alex's behavior modification. In order to shorten his prison sentence, the violent sociopath is made chemically ill while forced to view scenes of rapine and bloodshed. His sickness can only be arrested by replacing his natural criminal urges with passive thoughts.
It's hard to listen to "Overture To The Sun" without recalling the spotlighted naked girl who tempts an on-exhibit Alex into a state of unwellness that he likens to "wanting to snuff it." His freedom to choose brutality has been taken from him forcefully, through violent reprogramming. The subsequent events that precipitate Alex's restoration into a fully non-functional member of society beset him in a fashion ironically similar to the chaos he once left in his violent wake.
The stark images and perversities of this movie tend to stay with a person. Perhaps watching Kubrick's CLOCKWORK ORANGE has in some way "programmed" the viewer, too, by desensitizing us to the madness that is all around. Maybe this film holds up better than I thought. I must have a glass of choko moloko and reconsider . . .

Horrorshow Lomticks of Music to do the old Ultra-Violence By. .......2005-07-28
My personal favorite is the title music of the film, Henry Purcell's "Funeral Music for Queen Mary," a piece so appropriate to the film that Purcell must have been channelling the future when he wrote it in the late 17th century. Carlos's interpretation of this Purcell piece is astounding in its forboding textures and alientating timbres. Electronic tympani have never sounded better - and were never used like this before. Ring modualtions, filter sweeps, phased sawtooth angel trumpets and resonate devil trombones - oh bliss!
I also liked the strange music Kubrick chose - "I want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper," and "Anthem to the Sun," both obscure and perfect.
Carlos's avant-garde composition "Timesteps" appears in abbreviated form here, and for most listeners this abridgement is enough.
The concluding ironic use of "Singing in the Rain," is wonderful, and after an album (and film) full of electronics, classical music, and weirdness, a standard is shocking enough.
There is a new version of the soundtrack put out by Carlos herself, which includes only her work. Some tracks composed but not used in the film appear here, as do some track used, but not appearing on the OST as well. Timesteps in its 13:37 form is also on this album.
For those fans of Prog rock: Viddy the film when Alex visits a record store: Notice the Vertigo swirl above the main desk, also in the wrecked foyer of Alex's highrise, one of the figures on the vandalised mural has "Suck it and see" written on it, also the name of a Vertigo music sampler of the same era.

MTB put out the goods every time........2007-05-12
"Highly Refined Pirates" dabbles into the good life with tales of good times and good friends by way of great songs. If that's not your thing, don't worry; HRP has plenty of dynamics and great, tasteful playing to keep things interesting. Somehow they mix understated electronic elements and the best rhythm section in indie rock with a guitar player (who, by the way, used to play in the legendary metalcore band Botch) playing on a completely different level than the rest of us. In fact, after the first listens I found myself humming the guitar parts as often as I was singing the lyircs.
Whether you need good grooves, demand "make you stop and think" lyrics, or just dig good music, this album is a good way to go.
*Extra bit of opinion inserted here: Everyone has that friend or relative that says "There hasn't been a good song written since [enter date here]." Borrow them a Minus The Bear album. Whether they're a classic rock cat or an indie snob they'll probably like it and they can finally stop playing their old CDs every time they get in their car.

Like many, my introduction to this band was because I heard this guitarist Dave Knudson's new band. (Dave was formerly in a little ol' hardcore band called: Botch)
My initial reaction was shock... Wait! Stop the Presses! This isn't Heavy!
Then I got a grip on myself and actually listened to the CD.... AMAZING!!!
-Honestly if radio stations played music like this I would actually appreciate Pop-Music.
Minus the Bear is filled with amazingly catchy, and skillful, guitar riffs, funktastic bass lines, complex drumming, nice elemental prog-inspired keyboards and a great singer who is also is an amazing lyricist. (See, Get Me Naked: Part II)
They have oodles of talent and are beyond catchy... I ponder my brain everyday wondering why bands like this and Porcupine Tree aren't at the forefront of Mainstream music... and then I remember... Sometimes it is better we keep these gems to real music fans and not companies that will just exploit and ruin them.

This remarkable debut album, released a full seven years after the group had formed, was still way ahead of its time back in 1978. Suicide--Alan Vega on vocals and Martin Rev on keyboards and drum machine--are one of the most original acts in the history of popular music. They're often called the first synthpop act; synth-punk is closer to the truth--their music was far more edgy and menacing than that of any of their followers, with the notable exception of Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, et al. Suicide drew on the right protopunk influence (Nuggets-type stuff, Velvets, Stooges) and came out of the same Mercer Arts scene that bred the New York Dolls. Their guitar-bass-and-"real"-drummer-deprived setup outraged audiences; on the superb bonus disc you can hear a European crowd rioting in the background while their apocalyptic nursery rhymes sound away. Tough guy Vega croons like an evil Elvis bred on garage rock and performance art; the stoic Rev lays churning, repetitive, and oddly melodic lines down on his beat-up Farfisa, and the ancient drum machine--it actually sounds steam-driven--propels the music toward a ratty, Blade Runner future. "Dream Baby Dream," "Che," "Ghost Rider"--these eerie, sturdy, steam-punk anthems rank among the most visionary, melodic experiments the rock realm has yet produced. This reissue is bright and clear-sounding, and with the full disc of live performances (a 1977 CBGB's soundboard tape plus the legendary "23 Minutes Over Brussels" performance) this is an essential purchase. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description

i can even recall the misfits early demo stuff having an entertaning synth sound in there music( and that was just plain laughable, but wasnt terrible). This music however, is not "music", and anyone who can actually sit down and listen to this all the way through and try to tell me that I dont get the "artistic value".......well......to them i say, Enjoy sniffing your own farts the rest of your life
And for the many reviews that say this it is "scarrRrrRRrRy" to listen to.. hmm......wow...i guess ill leave that one up to you
Beautiful, brilliant, terrifying CD.......2006-06-26
As someone properly pointed out earlier, this isn't the "punk" many would equate with The Ramones, Dead Boys, Television, et al. For there is no guitarist, bassist or drummer. In like manner, to call this a "techno" album would not do either. But this album does draw inspirations from both. Alan Vega used the word "punk" in describing his earlier gigs, when he gained infamy for sporting a leather jacket, battered jeans and a bike chain that he pummeled the walls and floors with. Some of these things ARE punk in a sense.
But that's beside the point. What an album this is: Two artists with limited resources or instruments, except a battered organ (originally it was in fact a Farfisa) and a whole lotta attitude create an album of raw, primitive energy. Martin Rev's homemade riffs are an overtone to Alan Vega's beat-like lyrics. While "Ghost Rider" conjures up images of motorcyclists who are "blazin' away," "Rocket USA" is a brooding punch-out about "doomsday" amid a world of decadence: "It's nineteen hundred seventy seven/the whole country's doin' a fix/ It's doomsday.")
But this isn't always menacing. With an Elvis-like crooning, "Cheree" is an absolutely gorgeous update on '50s melodies. When Vega sings "Cheree Cheree/my comic book fantasy/ come play with me/ I love you / I love you, baby," it's actually quite moving. "Johnny" is fun little slice of rockabilly, albeit short. (What a shame!) "Girl" is probably the one low-water mark on the album that should be avoided at all costs, unless hearing someone moan perversely into the mic is entertaining to you.
Then there's "Frankie Teardrop", the jarring, disturbing 10-minute epic of 20-year-old Frankie who's stuck in the seamy side of NYC with a wife and kid - a working stiff who's "working from 7 to 5/he's just tryin' to survive" but snaps and what ensues is probably one of the scariest moments in music. The first time I heard this track I was sweating and I jumped about four times. Don't listen to this late at night alone - you've been warned. (Interesting side note: Bruce Springsteen is a fan of this song, apparently it was an inspiration when recording his "Nebraska" album a few years later.)
"Che" is a brooding comedown, a track that conjures up images of a TV/movie icon who meets his fate.
Rev and Vega have done a few albums together since (including the understated "A Way of Life" which I own on LP believe it or not!) but this debut remains unsurpassed. If you're hesitant to listen to this because of the notoriety surrounding "Frankie Teardrop" give this a chance and play it beginning to end. You might be pleasantly surprised - I certainly was!
(Note: The CD version I own is an out-of-print version from Demon Records, released in the late '80s, without the bonus tracks. So I can't comment on the live tracks.)
Post-punk... pre-Ramones?! [4.5 stars].......2006-05-04
Anyway this album is the genesis of post-punk/New Wave, performed with a beat-up organ/synthesizer Rev probably found in the back alley of a music shop, and a decrepit but chugging drum machine that brings a futuristic pulse to the eerie synths and Alan Vega's voice, which sounds like Elvis detained in Guantanomo. Very original, very creepy, and very cool.
The material varies from what would be otherwise poppy tracks made slightly unnerving due to their foreboding starkness (Girl, Cheree, Keep Your Dreams) to more haunting and atmospheric songs (Ghost Rider, Rocket USA, Che) and even one track that sounds a bit like a primitive Doors cut (I Remember).
Then there's the 10-minute Frankie Teardrop--perhaps one of the most terrifying and claustrophobic songs ever released, with Vega's banshee screams punctuating the narrative of a young factory worker who kills himself and his own family out of desperation and wakes up in hell. The conclusion, with its ominous synths and Vega sounding as if he's going insane from the horror around him, will leave a scar on your mind.
The bonus material includes a decent, if roughly recorded CBGB's performance and the confrontational and chaotic "23 Minutes Over Brussels" show which is important for historical reasons, I suppose, but isn't worth listening to more than once or twice. The first disc is all you need to know. A bit primitive and dated in places, but still vital, influential, and amazing for fans of the genre.

Three years removed from the riveting full-length debut, "Highly Refined Pirates", this highly stylized Seattle indie-pop group flaunts substantial glitch-riddled prog-pop on their second Suicide Squeeze full-length. Weaving through territories long established by '70s prog-rockers (Yes, Rush), '80s proto punks (Fugazi), and '90s art rock mind-f*cks (Jawbox, Joan Of Arc), Minus The Bear invoke the modern love affair between dance driven strategy and lush, Upper Pacific sweater rock. Features appearances by Judah Nagler and Josh Staples (The Velvet Teen), Michael Richardson (The New Trust), and Heather Duby.Customer Reviews:

Whether it's the catchy choruses, the subtle atmospheric elements, or pounding rhythm section that catches your ear, it's almost guaranteed that after one listen, you'll be insanely hooked on Minus The Bear. I can speak from personal experience. Hits like the opener "The Game Needed Me" and "Drilling" offer up healthy doses of melody to go along with their instant likability, and are perfect introductions for anyone not familiar with the band or their sound. Commonly described by many as a group of musical virtuosos (which is entirely true, as they're both great songwriters and musicians), Dave's guitar playing is what really defines the band's sound. Could you imagine tracks like "Pachuca Sunrise" or "Hooray" being backed by discordant power chords or zany mathematical rhythms like those of the Botch days? Didn't think so. However the same skill and technique which Dave used to compose many Botch songs, has obviously played a key factor in how he has written so many great and memorable guitar parts for this record. Add in a rhythm section that perfectly compliments his approach, as well as an electronics mastermind and an energetic, captivating front man (who can sing and write the best of them) and every piece of the puzzle comes together. This is clearly the most promising act to come out of Botch's demise.
"Menos El Eso" was absolutely one of my favorite records of last year, and it's still in healthy circulation in my listening this year. Front to back there's no filler or lacking of any kind (and without the little one minute interludes and skits of "Highly Refined Pirates", the record seems to have much more direction), and every song will be stuck in your head after one listen. If experimental, new-wave flavored indie rock sounds appealing to you, then Minus The Bear should be a top priority on your must listen list. This is one of those records that won't take long to grow on you. Highly recommended!

If You Love Classical Music, This CD Is For You .......2007-01-10
Probably Decca's best "Adagios" set.......2006-07-26
A couple drawbacks to this set: (1) The adagio from Rachmaninov's 2nd is truncated to a mere 4 minutes. For this, one is well advised to purchase a CD with the entire concerto, or get a full version of just the adagio elsewhere (Decca does include a full version on its "Romantic Adagios" collection). (2) So much from so many composers is included, that there is too little room for more Beethoven. I'd prefer the adagio from the "Pathetique" sonata to the "Moonlight" one which was included here. For Beethoven adagios, you need the "Beethoven Adagios" set as an accompaniment (where you get, among other things, adagios for the op. 130 string quartet, the 6th symphony, the violin concerto, piano concerto no. 3, the 7th symphony, and the romance for violin no. 2, op. 50). If you're a fan of Mozart music often used in the movies, there's the "Mozart Adagios" set and/or the "Amadeus" soundtrack.
I'm a "purist" as to a few works; I'd rather hear the entirety of the "Emperor" concerto than merely the adagio, for instance. In plenty of other cases, an adagio movement is heard just fine as a stand-alone work; plenty of the most beautiful music is used for adagio movements, as these sets make clear enough.
One of the best CDs you'll ever own.......2003-03-23
One reason I chose it was that I was looking for music that could simply be a nice background noise for when I'm working on things that require reading and concentration. I wanted music that would not be a distraction, and this does a good job. It is also great to listen to when doing almost anything, like even cleaning the house or doing laundry. I will admit though, that listening to the selection from Swan Lake might make you want to dance around the living room.
Also, besides the obvious ones that everybody knows (Beethoven's 5th, or Canon in D, etc.) I do not know enough to distinguish specific songs from their composers, which is why I was hesitant to buy a classical CD soley of one artist because once I got it I may not have liked it or been familiar with any of the songs. That is why I picked Movie Adagios because I knew it would be a selection of some of the best classical music from the movies, which it is.
Sublime!.......2002-09-08
Filmmakers have been raiding the classical music files since the days of the silents in order to heighten the mood of a scene and provide a greater emotional impact. Barber's Adagio for Strings has been used not only in "Platoon", as this CD lists, but also in "The Elephant Man". While there's only a small snippet of Rachmininoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 here, it's worth remembering that the entire piece is used throughout the magnificent "Brief Encounter" to heighten the impact of the romance. Mozart's Trio (Cosi fan tutte) was brilliantly used in "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" to comment on a complex romantic triangle.
There are also 5 pieces written directly for the screen, two by Ennio Morricone (the haunting Gabriel's Oboe from "The Mission" and the exquisite Nuovo Cinema Paradiso from "Cinema Paradiso"), two by John Barry (a lovely version of We Have All the Time in the World from the James Bond classic "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and the elegiac John Dunbar Theme from "Dances With Wolves") and one by Michael Nyman (The heart asks pleasure first from "The Piano").
I love this CD, to relax with, to read with, and just immerse myself in the spectacular sounds of genius.

Album Description
Sorrow, regret and revenge procreate in a dark lonely corner of your heart. It's that little piece of yourself that you try and hide from seeing the light of day. Southern California's Atreyu thrives on that darkness.Taking a new direction in the world of metal they fluidly balance sinister metal riffs with technical, finger tapping cadences. Their blend of soothing vocal harmonies lull you into a state of momentary bliss, until your dreams are abruptly shattered by a menacing growl so fierce it will make you want to impale your delicate face with any object within arm's reach. Atreyu represents the perfect hybrid of hardcore, emo and metal.

I can't describe how juvenile the lyrics are! Here's an example from the single "Lip Gloss and Black"(with irregular capalization to make it seem dumber): "IF I GAve YOu ENouGH PRetTY WOrdS... COulD YOu PAinT A PIctURe OF US THat WOrkS..." *whiney sung parts* *chorus* *lousy guitar solo* *return screaming* "I WIll KIss EVerY SCar, ANd WEep YOu ARe NOt ALonE... THen I'Ll SHow YOu THat PLacE IN MY CHesT WHerE MY HEarT STilL TRieS TO BEat... ARen'T YOu TIreD OF BEinG WEak?" *whiney sung parts* *chorus* *filler breakdown moment*
Now to the vocals. OH MY FU**ING GOD!!! Who though this Alex Varkatzas idiot was good?! I mean come on! He barks like a dog with Tourettes syndrome, screams like he's getting dunked in a toilet(by a childhood bully which inspired the band's lyrics) and sings like a whiney child! The vocals are probably the worst part of the band! I'm not in the mood to talk about the instrumental talent as it sucks too.
So all in all Atreyu are another band in a crappy and oversaturated genre. And thus says The Metal Master_92...
i enjoy it........2006-05-09
what this album also does is combine the heavyness of metal with punks energy and uplifiting chords, and a not too bad drummer (ive heard better, think "atomship"). not to mention the vocals...
i have nothing against screaming, but if a band doesnt have melodic vocals to add variety to the music, i hate it. it just gets boring (think will haven). atreyu stays exciting through the whole cd, i never get bored. its a great album. buy it.
